Roland Barthes suggested that narratives contain codes that reveal the meaning of the text. These include the hermeneutic code of unexplained elements that intrigue audiences, the proairetic code of continuing the narrative structure, the semantic code of additional implied meanings through connotation, the symbolic code of symbolism and contrast, and the cultural code of cultural references that provide context.
