Barthes argues that there are five main codes that make up every narrative:
1) The Hermeneutic Code refers to mysterious elements that are not fully explained, creating puzzles for the audience.
2) The Proairetic Code builds tension by suggesting future events and actions, getting the audience to guess what will happen next.
3) The Semantic Code uses connotation to provide deeper meaning beyond literal word definitions.
4) The Symbolic Code organizes semantic meanings into broader themes through opposing ideas and structures.
5) The Cultural Code references established cultural works, knowledge, morals, or ideologies that shape the audience's understanding.
