Editor's Notes
My name is Neela Bell – teacher 20+, designer, elearning consultant
and I’m going to show you some terrific resources to engage and connect with your learners
When I started out … media creation was a time consuming turn off for most teachers.
A massive shift in the kinds of tools available … takes away the “technical” barrier …
focus strong lesson design using visuals, video and social media
Cue ahead … Animoto …. scott buckley music x2 ….
Simple tools to
Engage and Connect with learners. I want you to
feel successful and inspired to
explore some new territory.
The trend is towards …. active learning, visual and mobile. These playlists touch on all of those trends.
The real playlist …. Media has a unique way of getting at these
Payoff … It can feel scary and it can be a time suck.
The trend is towards …. More visual … less text.
We are visual learners.
We are such visual learners. http://info.shiftelearning.com/blog/bid/350326/Studies-Confirm-the-Power-of-Visuals-in-eLearning
We are visual learners.
Starting to shift towards a more visual presentation of information
Not to say that words aren’t ALSO important. Just that they aren’t everything.
In the “real world” there is a massive shift … but inside the school house walls we are still tied to text, even when it doesn’t serve us. Students respond to visuals.
Through the use of images, text, and diagrams, these notes take advantage of the "visual thinker" mind's penchant for make sense of—and understanding—information with pictures. (sketchnote army)
The path AWAY from expressing ourselves in drawing and symbols … begins early. Asking to students to “mindmap” the results are not great. They, like us, need training
http://sunnibrown.com/2010/02/fundamentals-of-visual-notetaking-for-sxsw
It’s not art! visual thinking.
Notetaking:
Establishes what’s important
Personal
Improves understanding
This is a sketchnote ABOUT sketch notes. The power for us and for students is it immediately demonstrates whether you understand the concepts or not.
The key to getting started is to start building a “vocabulary” of images and symbols. First imitate.
I’m assuming everone has seen them … they’re everywhere.
Communicate a lot of info in a small space …
and they are a universal comprehension
Very simple example
A lovely blend of text and graphics. A complex topic that’s made accessible. Packed with information.
Make a great group project … each person taking a section … but it’s part of a larger concept
We are visual learners.
We are visual learners.
Great as an option to demonstrate learning …
Class discussion (learning to read them too)
Writing prompt
Unlike pictures, there is motion … an “arc”. A journey with a destination.
Also unlike images, there are “layers” … each with a role to play. Those four layers move along horizontally in time working together to tell a story.
Also unlike images, there are “layers” … each with a role to play. Those four layers move along horizontally in time working together to tell a story.
Let’s put it together … images from the course … teasers about their “mission” … driving soundtrack ….

(What I show them on the first day in Language Arts 9)

Secret weapon. Untapped resource. Powerful … mobile … engaging.
Sometimes music can do it way … better … than words …
it’s emotional and physical
It is ok to study, but not to broadcast.
– World War 2 (or any famous historical battle)– The global fight of a disease– The explorers– The struggle for endangered animals– Space (the planets / solar system)
Urban … street smart … hip hop …Behind the scenes … olympics …
struggle to get something accomplished
Personal … biography … themselves or a public figure
Travel to another country … developing country … poverty …
http://visual.ly/how-not-look-ugly-webcam
Pulling together media that we’ve talked about … visuals, music, video, etc. in search of a desired set of behaviours. We want engagement … completion … creativity … collaboration … all a part of “design” in the bigger sense.
Game mechanics … game design … taps into some common motivators.
Progressive difficulty, rewards, role playing
Sharing our own media … and learning from and appreciating that of others is “the next step”.
For my money the best place to gather and share … is Twitter. It falls perfectly into my high payoff low time investment model. It’s an amazing place to connect with other people.
Curating resources and participating in conversations.
I just started using Twitter last year … and only because I thought I should.
I hope today you found some simple tools help you inspire … connect … engage …
and that you feel inspired to explore some new territory.
Going to leave you with a final thought … Every small step you make to adding either design or connection (or both) has some big pay offs… and a lot of fun too.
Thank you for your time today. Please drop me a note … I’d love to connect with you.
Tweet me a question or a thought about the session
Please fill in the evaluation … built into the convention app.
