4. Sexual Revolution
 The 1960s and 1970 were considered the sexual
revolution era.
 Teens attitude and behavior became more liberal
 Teens began to engage in premarital sex at an
increased rate
 Teen became sexually active six months prior than
their parents.

5. Currently STDs Status
 In the United States , the risk of acquiring an STDs is
higher among teenagers than adults.
 Rates of unprotected sexual activity, STDs, unplanned
pregnancies, and childbearing is highest among U.S
adolescents.
 Many adolescents are engaging in oral sex, and is
unaware of the risk of contracting STDs orally.

6. Experts Look For Solutions
 Bridging the gap between programs and research
 Experts suggested that research on prevention should
be designed and conducted to inform the development
of programs and policy.
 Experts conclude that teens reared in a traditional
family structure are less likely to engage in at-risk
behaviors
 Religion seems to play a vital role in deterring teens
from at-risk behaviors.

to double the amount in 1990.

 Lack of nurturing, due to the
only parent working and
spending less time with child.
 Children reared in these
types of homes generally
display at-risk behaviors.

homes Vs. Single-parent homes

 Economically beneficial; kids
are living in a stable home
 Children are more than likely
to be nurture due to one
parent staying home.
 Kids raised in a two parent
home are less like to engage
in at-risk behaviors.
 A possibility that single parent is
a teenager which places the child
at risk to live in poverty.
 Possibility of not receiving
nurturing due to the one parent
working
 More than likely to engage in at-
risk behaviors such as drug use,
sexual activity, cigarettes and
alcohol.

10. Changes over time
 In the 1950 the High School seniors of that era
believed that having premarital sex was not permitted
until marriage.
 The classes of 1975 and 2000 believed that premarital
sex was allowed if both people were in a serious
relationship
 In the 1950 few teens engaged in premarital sex based
on the negative view.
 In the 1960s and beyond the attitude changed and
teenage sex rates went up significantly and so did STDs
and teenage pregnancy.

11. SUMMARY
Based on the findings of this research it appears that the
traditional structural of the American family proved
beneficial in curtailing adolescent at-risk behaviors. In
addition, the lack of morality has caused adolescent sexual
activity to increase due to the lack of restraint. Based on
the continuing crisis of STDs it appears that the current sex
education courses taught in America’s school is merely
instructing teens how to have sex and not get diseases or
get pregnant. It seems evident that the best course of
action would be to empower teens to wait until marriage to
engage in sexual activity and also build self esteem to
insure that teens learn how to build better relationships to
ensure fidelity and longevity of marriage.
