• Your group arrives at a service site where
you'll be painting a house. The site supervisor
asks a few people to get on the roof to paint
an overhang. The roof is pretty steep and
high.
• What do you and your co-SL do?
• Communicate! Check in with participants
• Challenge by choice
• Talk about how to use the ladder safely
• Brainstorm other ways to make it safer
• Buddy system with transporting materials
• How can you and your co-SL prevent this?
• Let group know about risky service in advance to
give them time to mentally prepare
• During the trip, your co-SL wants to do
something that isn't part of the schedule and
you know won't be approved as a schedule
change. You're not comfortable, but don't
want to confront them.
• What do you do?
• Communicate
• Why do they really want to do this?
• Why won't it be approved by exec?
• Call exec if they're going to do it regardless
• Be responsible - think about the big picture
• How can you prevent this?
• Talk about stressors, ideas, etc. before the trip leaves
• Build a relationship of respect
• Your group gets to a service site where you'll
be working in the woods. The site supervisor
casually mentions that there might be poison
ivy in the area. Your group isn't prepared for
this and doesn't have gloves.
• What do you and your co-SL do?
• Communicate! Possible courses of action include...
• Asking the site supervisor to show the group what
poison ivy looks like so everyone can avoid touching it
• Call exec member and ask to go purchase gloves
• Keep calm and don't let your participants get upset.
• How can you and your co-SL prevent this?
• Ask if gloves were needed
• Ask what kind of clothing would be appropriate for
the service site
• The service site asks your group to use a
variety of power tools, including jig saws,
table saws, and a jackhammer to perform the
service.
• What do you and your co-SL do?
• Communicate!
• Ask site supervisor to give demonstration of how
to use the tools properly
• Ask site supervisor what safety precautions
should be taken (i.e. safety goggles)
• How can you and your co-SL prevent this?
• Again, you can't
• Uh-oh. You're cooking dinner and someone
burns part of dinner. Smoke is going
everywhere. The fire alarm starts going off.
• What do you and your co-SL do?
• Follow any emergency procedures set out by housing
site
• Call fire department
• Call housing contact and exec
• Keep participants calm
• What can you and your co-SL do to prevent this?
• Know where fire extinguisher is
• Know emergency procedures
• Be careful when cooking
• You're driving back to Athens from your
wonderful trip. Everyone in your van is asleep
after such an incredible week. You're starting
to get sleepy and tired.
• What do you do?
• Wake up your designated dialer and have them
call your co-SL
• Don't be afraid to stop!
• Ask a back up driver to drive
• How can you and your co-SL prevent this?
• Make a plan beforehand
• Communicate expectations with back up drivers
• Your group arrives at the service site and
learns that you'll be riding in a motor boat to
perform part of your service. You weren't
aware of this and haven't talked to exec about
it.
• What do you and your co-SL do?
• Communicate with each other, exec and your participants
• Is anyone afraid of water? Does everyone know how to swim?
• Make sure your complying with laws regarding life jackets
• Have your site supervisor talk about motor boat safety
• Keeping hands inside boat, watching for slippery deck
• How can you and your co-SL prevent this?
• Talk to your service site
• If someone is uncomfortable, ask for other ways to serve
• The service site asks your group to use strong
chemicals to remove paint off the floor as
part of a clean-up project. Your group doesn't
have gloves or masks.
• What do you and your co-SL do?
• Ask the site supervisor for gloves and masks. If they're
unable to provide them, call your exec member to see if
you can go buy some.
• Increase ventilation in the area to the best of your ability
• Have people work in shifts to reduce exposure to the
chemicals
• Check in with participants to see how they're feeling
• Challenge by choice
• How can you and your co-SL prevent this?
• Get as much information as possible about the service
your group will be performing

• Communicate! Try to calm down the
participant so that others don't get upset

• Ask the site supervisor for gloves. If they're
unable to provide them, call exec to see if you
can go buy some
