Richard Estes is an American painter regarded as one of the founders of photorealism in the late 1960s. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and moved to New York City in 1956. Estes is known for his highly realistic paintings of cityscapes and urban environments based on photographs. He is particularly interested in reflections and uses them throughout his works to distort and question perceptions of reality. Estes' style employs photo-realist techniques to depict mundane scenes in great detail and with trompe l'oeil illusionism.
