This document defines and classifies different retail formats. Retail formats describe a retailer's operations and are typically classified by the type of products sold - food, hard goods, soft goods, or arts. Formats are also classified by ownership structure, merchandise offered, and presence of a physical store. Store-based formats include independent retailers, chains, franchises, leased departments, and cooperatives. Non-store formats comprise direct selling, e-tailing, mail order, vending, and telemarketing. Service formats are banks, car rentals, and service contracts. Organized retailing includes chain stores owned or franchised by a central entity providing licensed sales and taxes.
