Reynolds experimentó las características de flujo en los fluidos introduciendo un trazador en un líquido que fluía por una tubería. La capa límite es un proyecto humano, una manera de proporcionar las cosas para que sus limitadas capacidades matemáticas no se vean excedidas por las enredadas ecuaciones que rigen el movimiento de un fluido.
La capa límite es aquella en la que la velocidad del fluido respecto al sólido en movimiento varía desde cero hasta el 99% de la ligereza de la corriente no flujo laminar y flujo turbulento a valores bajos de flujo másico, cuando el flujo del líquido dentro de la tubería es laminar, se manipula la ecuación manifestada en clase para deducir el perfil de velocidad “Ecuación de velocidad en función del radio”. Cuando el flujo másico en una tubería aumenta hasta valores del número de Reynolds líderes como 2100 el flujo dentro de la tubería se vuelve errático y se origina la composición perpendicular del líquido. La intensidad de dicha mezcla crece acorde al número de Reynolds.
En una placa plana, se ha visto que el grosor de la capa límite crece con la distancia a partir del borde de ataque, lo que se explica por la deceleración que sufre el fluido a causa del esfuerzo cortante o la viscosidad. Esta consecuencia se ocasiona cuando el gradiente de presiones se mantiene nulo a lo largo de la placa plana.
