"Changing climate - Is resource efficiency a way out of crisis?"
All countries must take more action. Otherwise the climate change will continue steadily. As a result, there is a growing risk that different types of crisis and the struggle for increasingly scarce natural resources, such as clean water, will become more common. Could resource efficiency boost growth at country level and, in this way, prevent conflicts? And what would be the role of resource efficiency in the recovery from conflicts? What are the challenges and opportunities of the bioeconomy in the slowing down of climate change?
Very topical morning seminar in Joensuu Eastern Finland pointed out the relationship between resource efficiency, development and conflicts on the one hand and the relationship between climate change and bioeconomy on the other.
Speeches were given by Doctor Rajendra K. Pachauri, Chairman of IPCC and Heidi Hautala, Finland’s Minister for International Development.
The seminar, organised by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, TERI and the Nordic office of TERI, served as an introduction to the Koli Forum that will take place between 17 and 19 September.

2) A new approach is needed that focuses on shorter-lived climate pollutants like soot, which new science shows cause almost half of current global warming. Reducing these pollutants could lead to more tangible near-term impacts and build credibility in the international regime.

Are we addicted to the economy? Have we forgotten it is the environment that gives life, not the economy? Do we recognize that energy, green or otherwise, will not protect the planet, or create reverence for the sacred, or care and respect for the community of life?
Thesis Proposal
The document discusses the need to shift from sustainability to resilience in response to climate change and increasing crisis events. It proposes that resilience involves making communities, institutions, and infrastructure more flexible and responsive to extreme events. The document also examines challenges to promoting change, strategies for developing resilience in Baltimore, and questions around adapting emergency management to be more holistic and focused on adaptation rather than just reaction.
Adaptation
Climate change poses risks to sustainable development that can be addressed through adaptation. Two articles were analyzed that link adaptation and reducing negative climate impacts or enhancing positive ones. Adaptation can be autonomous and reactive or planned by public entities, but institutional support is important for long term success. While early views focused on predicting future risks, adaptation is now seen as an opportunity. However, the articles took a top-down approach rather than incorporating community awareness from the bottom-up. Mainstreaming adaptation into development requires overcoming challenges from their broad, vague nature and ensuring projects reduce both poverty and vulnerability.

Background
In December 2015, representatives of 195 nations meeting in Paris for the Conference of the Parties (COP21) set an ambitious goal to reach net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the mid-century. During the talks climate activists took to social media to get out their message on climate justice. Before the official summit kicked off, activists held more than 2,300 events in over 175 countries in a Global Climate March, rallying around the shared goal, “Keep fossil fuels in the ground and finance a just transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050.” At the same time, international media attention to climate issues was heightened leading up to, and during, the climate talks.
Objective
We study Twitter posting during COP21 about fossil fuel divestment. We focus on COP21 coverage by the British news outlet The Guardian, which in 2015 launched its “Keep it in the Ground” advocacy campaign. We compare The Guardian’s posting during COP21 with other news outlets, climate stakeholders, and fossil fuel industry actors.

1) An economist discusses environmental economics and how it relates to climate change. The causes of environmental problems are economic due to unintended pollution from production, and environmental problems have economic consequences.
2) The basic science of climate change is outlined, noting the risks of temperature increases over 2°C. From a science to economics perspective, reducing emissions to avoid the worst impacts will be difficult but not impossible, though the costs are often underestimated.
3) Moving from economics to politics, climate change is a global issue but costs and benefits are not equally distributed, creating a free rider problem requiring international cooperation. Carbon pricing is the most effective but politically challenging approach.
The Paris Climate Talks (COP21) in Visual Social Media
I will be presenting research on visual social media during the 2015 Paris climate talks (COP21), a collaboration with Luis Hestres (University of Texas at San Antonio), at the 2017 International Conference on Social Media and Society at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada July 30 (http://socialmediaandsociety.org). The conference is organized by the Social Media Lab at Ryerson.
Research summary: Within networked, digital media spaces, new news platforms are reconfiguring traditional news production norms through hybrid cultural practices, giving rise to new paradigms of journalism. There is an increased emphasis on transparency and accountability, as well as interaction with audiences. At the same time, Internet-mediated activism allows individuals to foster larger, more diverse networks of weak ties, thus opening new avenues for advocacy communication. Climate change is increasingly becoming the backdrop to news stories on topics as varied as politics and international relations, science and the environment, economics and inequality, and popular culture. We use the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) that took place in Paris from November 30 to December 11, 2015, as a case study. The project focuses on COP21 coverage by British news outlet The Guardian, which launched a fossil fuel divestment campaign "Keep it in the Ground" in advance of COP21. We compare The Guardian's discussion of 'climate solutions' during COP21 with other news outlets and climate stakeholders.

Climate Change volates Human Rights
It is mainly the inhabitants of the global South who suffer from the effects of climate change. They are faced with the destruction of their living space and the violation of their human rights. At the same time, existing human rights standards offer the possibility of establishing points of reference during international climate negotiations to address such questions as adjustment programs designed to confront the effects of climate change, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, technology transfers, and the future of development. As a frame of reference, human rights standards can serve to accurately evaluate policies and to pinpoint their failures, particularly regarding how these policies affect the world’s weakest inhabitants. This publication by the political scientist Theodor Rathgeber uses case examples to illustrate the dangers faced by indigenous peoples in particular, as well as the tools the UN human rights system gives them to support their struggle for just climate policies.
Global climate risk index 2019
The Global Climate Risk Index 2019 analyzed impacts from weather-related disasters between 1998 and 2017. Puerto Rico, Sri Lanka, and Dominica were the most affected countries in 2017. Puerto Rico and Dominica suffered severe damage from Hurricane Maria in 2017. Between 1998 and 2017, Puerto Rico, Honduras, and Myanmar were the most affected countries. Over this period, more than 526,000 people died and losses totaled approximately $3.47 trillion as a result of over 11,500 extreme weather events. Developing countries typically face greater impacts than industrialized countries. Effective climate change mitigation is in all countries' self-interest to limit further impacts.

The Paris Climate Talks (COP21) in Visual Social Media
I will be presenting research on visual social media during the 2015 Paris climate talks (COP21), a collaboration with Luis Hestres (University of Texas at San Antonio), at the 2017 International Conference on Social Media and Society at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada July 30 (http://socialmediaandsociety.org). The conference is organized by the Social Media Lab at Ryerson.
Research summary: Within networked, digital media spaces, new news platforms are reconfiguring traditional news production norms through hybrid cultural practices, giving rise to new paradigms of journalism. There is an increased emphasis on transparency and accountability, as well as interaction with audiences. At the same time, Internet-mediated activism allows individuals to foster larger, more diverse networks of weak ties, thus opening new avenues for advocacy communication. Climate change is increasingly becoming the backdrop to news stories on topics as varied as politics and international relations, science and the environment, economics and inequality, and popular culture. We use the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) that took place in Paris from November 30 to December 11, 2015, as a case study. The project focuses on COP21 coverage by British news outlet The Guardian, which launched a fossil fuel divestment campaign "Keep it in the Ground" in advance of COP21. We compare The Guardian's discussion of 'climate solutions' during COP21 with other news outlets and climate stakeholders.

Climate Change volates Human Rights
It is mainly the inhabitants of the global South who suffer from the effects of climate change. They are faced with the destruction of their living space and the violation of their human rights. At the same time, existing human rights standards offer the possibility of establishing points of reference during international climate negotiations to address such questions as adjustment programs designed to confront the effects of climate change, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, technology transfers, and the future of development. As a frame of reference, human rights standards can serve to accurately evaluate policies and to pinpoint their failures, particularly regarding how these policies affect the world’s weakest inhabitants. This publication by the political scientist Theodor Rathgeber uses case examples to illustrate the dangers faced by indigenous peoples in particular, as well as the tools the UN human rights system gives them to support their struggle for just climate policies.

The Global Climate Risk Index 2019 analyzed impacts from weather-related disasters between 1998 and 2017. Puerto Rico, Sri Lanka, and Dominica were the most affected countries in 2017. Puerto Rico and Dominica suffered severe damage from Hurricane Maria in 2017. Between 1998 and 2017, Puerto Rico, Honduras, and Myanmar were the most affected countries. Over this period, more than 526,000 people died and losses totaled approximately $3.47 trillion as a result of over 11,500 extreme weather events. Developing countries typically face greater impacts than industrialized countries. Effective climate change mitigation is in all countries' self-interest to limit further impacts.

This research tests the popular press assumption that media are not discussing climate change in coverage of extreme weather. Change over time in English-language media coverage of heat waves and wildfires is assessed, from 2013 to 2018, including 37 news outlets from five countries, as well as Agence France-Presse and Climatewire. Mentions of climate issues increased both types of extreme weather. Climatewire provided the highest degree of climate change issue attention. For Canada and the United States, climate change issue attention was higher than would be expected by chance in heat wave coverage, while it was roughly equal to what would be expected by chance for China, and lower for India and the United Kingdom. For wildfire coverage, issue attention to climate issues was higher than expected by chance for Canada, India, and the United Kingdom; lower for China and the United States. Elite, climate-specialist news outlets gave more attention to climate issues in both heat wave and wildfire reporting across the years studied. The 2013 to 2018 time period also saw an uptick in media coverage of heat waves, particularly in Chinese English-language media.

Social Media in Agenda-setting: The Elsipogtog First Nation and Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
ABSTRACT. The Dakota Access Pipeline did not gain widespread attention until it was nearly complete, despite extensive opposition from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. It was not until images depicting repression circulated on social media that mainstream media and public attention spiked. We use shale gas exploration in New Brunswick, Canada and the Dakota Access Pipeline, as case studies of social media agenda-setting. We consider disruptive public participation to involve constituents who perceive themselves as outsiders to decision-making. In both cases protest was ongoing for significant periods before receiving mainstream media and public attention. Using mixed methods, we show that law enforcement and company crackdown on indigenous communities, and the circulation of dramatic visuals via Twitter, is associated with spikes in social media, as well as media and public attention.

This conversation is hosted by the UNCG departments of Environmental & Sustainability Studies and Geography.
Internet-Mediated Climate Advocacy: History, Convergence and Future Outlook
This document summarizes the history and evolution of internet-mediated climate change advocacy. It discusses how digital technologies have enabled more "armchair activism" by automating processes like donations and list-management. This lowered the costs of participation and made organizations less central. Research to be presented at the 2017 Conference on Communication and Environment (COCE), July 1, 2017, University of Leicester.
In fall 2016, violent images of the Dakota Access Pipeline protest near the Standing Rock Reservation stunned the world. Facebook users saw security guards sic attack dogs on Native women and children and police fire water cannons at praying protesters in subfreezing temperatures. However, the issue had not gained widespread mainstream media and public attention until the 1,172-mile pipeline was nearly complete, after more than two years of opposition from the tribe. It wasn’t until activists shared violent images on social media that public outrage forced policymakers to act. We argue that activities which heighten public attention to an issue through social media amplification constitute what we call disruptive public participation, which may empower activists and help “outsiders” become “insiders” in decision-making.
In both the Elsipogtog and Standing Rock cases, protest was ongoing for significant periods of time before they received widespread public attention. We argue that police crackdown on Indigenous communities and associated reports of violence and spikes in arrests of demonstrators are correlated with spikes in social media, as well as mainstream media, attention. The stakes of in-person involvement in protests are incredibly heightened. The circulation of violent images on social media—shared by “water protectors” on-the-ground and from outsiders offering solidarity and expressions of moral outrage—resulted in a spike in mainstream media attention.

The majority of voters support US global engagement on climate change. Following the presidential election, researchers at Yale and George Mason Universities found that seven in ten (69%) of registered voters agree with US participation in the Paris agreement on reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, including just more than half (51%) of Republicans. In this talk, drawing on my social media research on discourse about the COP21 Paris climate talks, protest over the Dakota Access Pipeline and hydraulic fracturing, as well as the broader field of climate change communication, I’ll explore ways in which we can connect meaningfully on climate action and energy issues in an era marked by political polarization on the issues.

Hashtags as Publics: Global Frackdown Anti-fracking Movement Twitter Practices
This document discusses the use of hashtags on Twitter to facilitate transnational environmental movements. It analyzes a dataset of over 9,000 tweets with the #GlobalFrackdown hashtag from October 2013. The tweets came predominantly in English and Spanish and were used to coordinate global actions against fracking, spread awareness of local protests, and build a sense of shared identity and goals across different regions. The study finds that Twitter allows environmental campaigns to combine local and global framing of issues as well as jump between frames in different languages.
Talking about Fracking: A Contested Energy Technology on Twitter
This document summarizes a study analyzing over 64,000 tweets regarding hydraulic fracturing (fracking) during Global Frackdown events in October 2013. The study used machine learning to classify tweets by hashtag (such as #fracking and #globalfrackdown), geographic origin, and opinion (pro-shale, neutral, anti-shale). It found differences in the proportions of opinions expressed between hashtags, with #fracking having more pro-shale tweets and #globalfrackdown having more anti-shale tweets. The study also analyzed the top tweeters and mentions to identify key actors in the discussions.

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.

This study generally developed and conducted the formulation of aramang baked products enriched with malunggay conducted by the researchers. Specifically, it answered the acceptability level in terms of taste, texture, flavor, odor, and color also the overall acceptability of enriched aramang baked products. The study used the frequency distribution for evaluators to determine the acceptability of enriched aramang baked products enriched with malunggay. As per sensory evaluation conducted by the researchers, it was proven that aramang baked products enriched with malunggay was acceptable in terms of Odor, Taste, Flavor, Color, and Texture. Based on the results of sensory evaluation of enriched aramang baked products proven that three (3) treatments were all highly acceptable in terms of variable Odor, Taste, Flavor, Color and Textures conducted by the researchers.

Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.
