FINDING ANSWERS
is the end of all research. Whether
it is the answer to a hypothesis or
even a simple question, research is
successful when we find answers.
Sometimes the answer is no, but it
is still an answer.
QUESTIONS
are central to research. If there is
no question, then the answer is of
no use. Research is focused on
relevant, useful, and important
questions. Without a question,
research has no focus, drive, or
purpose.

11. DEFINITION OF RESEARCH
When you say that you are undertaking a research study to find answers to a
question,
you are implying that the process;
1. is being undertaken within a framework of a set of philosophies
( approaches);
2. uses procedures, methods and techniques that have been tested for their
validity and reliability;
3. is designed to be unbiased and objective .
Philosophies means approaches e.g. qualitative, quantitative and the academic
discipline in which you have been trained.
Validity means that correct procedures have been applied to find answers to a
question.
Reliability refers to the quality of a measurement procedure that provides
repeatability and accuracy.
Unbiased and objective means that you have taken each step in an unbiased
manner and drawn each conclusion to the best of your ability and without
introducing your own vested interest.
(Bias is a deliberate attempt to either conceal or highlight
something).

12. Research is an investigation of finding solutions to
scientific and social problems through objective and
systematic analysis. It is a search for knowledge, that is, a
discovery of hidden truths. Here knowledge means
information about matters. The information might be
collected from different sources like experience, human
beings, books, journals, nature, etc. A research can lead to
new contributions to the existing knowledge. Only through
research is it possible to make progress in a field. Research
is indeed civilization and determines the economic, social
and political development of a nation.
