Identity In Auggie s Discovery
In the chapter Costumes , Auggie describes the astronaut helmet that he wore constantly as a younger
child to Miranda, the one to give Auggie the helmet, Auggie s father, who threw it away, and Auggie
and his friends each interpret Auggie s astronaut helmet itself in contrasting ways. First of all, Miranda
gave the astronaut helmet as a gift to Auggie years ago when Auggie was experiencing life throughout
his early years; the astronaut helmet signifies assistance and friendship to Auggie. When Auggie was
given the astronaut helmet, Miranda was aware that the many pedestrians on the street would give
Auggie unfavorable reactions upon seeing his face as a result, Miranda felt the need to aid Auggie
with his uncomfortableness with his facial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First of all, when Via first discovers that her brother, Auggie, removes his Padawan braid as a result of
a small remark of a classmate at his new school, she becomes angry at Auggie since she knew it was
one of many of Auggie s characteristics that represented who he was. Ever since Auggie was a young
child, he had an obsession over Star Wars along with his somewhat friend, Christopher, and he
continued to have an interest in Star Wars when Via discovered that Auggie had removed the Padawan
braid, she was upset because that was a true part of Auggie s identity. Since Via is very protective and
supportive of her brother, Auggie, and as she is struggling with her own identity herself, she wants
Auggie to take pride of his many wonderful traits and wants the Padawan braid to truly be a part of
him instead of how Auggie is usually depicted among others the kid with a birth defect (pg. 91).
Furthermore, Via was enraged when she found out that her brother, Auggie, cut off his Padawan braid
because she wants Auggie to not allow anyone to distract his self confidence. Whenever Via witnesses
an ungenerous remark from a passerby, she demonstrates her own confidence by exclaiming her fury
back at them.

Mark Coller V. New York Case Brief
Nancy and mark collier got married, but then on April 8, 2003, Nancy wanted to get a divorce from
Mark. Nancy was feeling unsafe and had an order of protection put on Mark for him to stay away
from her workplace. Nancy was working at the hospital on April 24, 2003, during that time mark went
to his neighbor and was telling his neighbor that he was going to kill himself and Nancy because
Nancy had filed divorce. Mark neighbor thought mark was just talking crazy because mark had talked
like that before. That night mark went back to his neighbor and said that tonight is the night and mark

Mark was found outside the only exit Nancy could use, in his pickup truck drunk and asleep. When
the police officer arrived, they had charged mark with an invasion of privacy for violating the terms of
the protective order and public intoxication. Then the state of Indiana charged mark with attempted
murder, a jury trial was held and the jury found Mark guilty. Mark was sentenced to twenty five years
in prison and after completing his time five years of probation. The Indiana court had accepted mark
collier appeal for his attempted murder charge, Mark had said that the evidence was insufficient and
his acts were a preparation for the murder. The acts that mark had done makes the courts believe that
mark was going to go through with the crime. The facts that were presented to the jury would make
them believe that Mark had to take the substantial step for the crime of attempted murder. If Mark was
awake, was going into the hospital, and opened to door, Mark would be guilty of attempted murder.
The Indiana Supreme Court made a decision that mark was not guilty of attempted murder. Mark was
not near Nancy since he was in the back of the parking

Positive And Negative Effects Of Dictatorships
I have always found the human need for power and domination interesting, which is why I choose it
for the Research Project. I am interested about how the Dictatorial style of government affects the
overall growth of the humanities globally. My goal for this project is to research and understand the
positive and negative effects of dictatorships on the academic growth as well as growth in the
humanities. There are clear negative effects like the loss of literature in countries such as Germany,
where specific types of book from certain eras were burned. In addition to that there are positives such
as leaders focusing on education more than other areas of government spending. The paper that would
be written using the information gathered through research on this topic would be persuasive, arguing
that though there are some positive effects, dictatorships have an overall negative impact on intellect
and the humanities.
My working research question is: Are the net effects of dictatorships on the areas of the humanities
including art and literature as well as academics as a whole positive or negative? My corresponding
thesis statement is: On the grounds of global loss of art and literature as well as suffering academics,
dictatorships have a negative effect on the country they govern as well as the world as a whole. I will
research historical occurrences of dictatorships globally. In addition to that I will research the effects
on academics in specific countries. I will also

How to Improve Reading Comprehension

How to Improve Reading Comprehension How to improve one s reading comprehension? First, one
must know what reading compression is, plain and simple it is the act of understanding what is being
read. Learning how to read is probably one of the most important skills that a child will acquire in
his/her lifetime (Pardo, 2011). Though it may sound easy, many people have difficultly remembering
and understanding what they read. To become a successful reader, a child must be able to decode the
individual words on the page and must be able to comprehend the text (McNamara, 2007). To read
effectively pick a subject that will be interesting, try to figure out ... Show more content on

Move the hand so that the first line of text being read is above the side of the hand. Slowly move the
palm to revile the words of the text at a regular speed so the reader can see the words that are being
exposed. Next, is the finger trick with this method the reader should place the index finger on the first
group of words that is about to be read. Move the finger in an irregular manner from the beginning of
the sentence to the end. This helps the reader to focus on reading groups of words instead of
individually. Another good tip to become a better reader is the card trick. Get an index card and place
it over the first sentence. Then slowly begin moving it in a downwards, covering what was just read.
This helps the reader to pay attention on what was just read since they will not have the opportunity to
revisit the words. After the reader has finished, determine what was learned. Give the reader a chance
to share what they have read in pairs or small groups. Then have them quiz themselves on the main
points of the material. Tell a friend about it. By doing this, the reader should try to recall the important
information in their own words. This will help them to remember and give a deeper insight into the
topic. If both people have read the same material, the friend could give good feedback to ensure that
the reader comprehends what was being read. The goal of having them discuss this is to involve more

How Did John F Kennedy s Influence On American Culture
During the 1960s, few people were more influential on American culture and values than President
John F. Kennedy. His young and adventurous personality shaped his decisions through his almost
three year presidency. While his presidency was short compared to most, his effect on America is still
felt today. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29th, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts to
Joseph Patrick Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. He began his political career in 1946, as a
Representative, quickly becoming a Senator, then the President of the United States. During his
campaign, Promised to lead Americans to a New Frontier. He charged that, under the Republicans, the

For example, Congress turned down a cabinet level Department of Urban Affairs and Kennedy s plan
for medical care for the elderly. Johnson, however, later had these passed. Kennedy changed around
the United States s national defense policies and increased conventional weapons. He wanted to
prepare for a non nuclear war and wanted to avoid a nuclear exchange. In his own words, Now in the
thermonuclear age any misjudgements on either side about the intentions of the other could rain more
devastation in several hours than has been wrought in all the wars of human history (Kennedy). In
October of 1962, nuclear missiles were discovered in Cuba, as supplied by Russia. This, following the
April 1961 Bay of Pigs failed invasion, were a recipe for an apocalypse. Kennedy ordered the US
Navy to quarantine Cuba, turning away any ships carrying missiles. For some days a handful of men,
operating largely in secret, held our destinies in their hands (Alsop 2). Thankfully, the nuclear war of
our nightmares never came, as Khrushchev ordered all Soviet missiles to be removed from Cuba. This
event became known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1961, Kennedy held a conference with
Khrushchev about easing up on military threats against West Berlin, but nothing was solved and the
Berlin Wall was built, not to fall till 1989. Russia began testing nuclear bombs again in 1961, breaking
an official test ban. The United States began testing their bombs soon after, but did it underground, so
as not to create dangerous fallout. In July, 1963, Russia, the United States, and Great Britain signed a
treaty banning atomic testing in the atmosphere, outer space, and underwater. Testing was permitted
underground (World Book 212j). Kennedy said that he wanted an Indispensable condition of

important lessons learned from my first assignment and which of them has the major impact on my
professional life. The necessity of being too close to my subordinates, the ability to work in civilian or
other environments and the importance of sacrifice virtue are the major lessons learned in my first
military assignment. In order to debate this thesis statement, this essay will tackle the first lesson

Major Differences Between A Command Economy And A Market...
1.1 Market Economies
There are many major differences between a command economy and a market economy. To start out
with, a command economy is planned, where the government decides the main economic decisions.
Next, a market economy is when individuals are free to make their own decisions as they buy and sell
products. So between both economies, the command economy is planned and the market economy is
free. In conclusion a command economy and a market economy, are two completely different things.
I believe that the Private Enterprise is the most important. To begin with, individuals have rights to
own their own business. However, the individuals might have their freedom but they also have to
follow the laws. It, also let s the business owners produce goods with limited government decisions or
directions. In conclusion, Private Enterprise let s individuals work, how they would like, while
maintaining the laws.
There are many reasons to why the market economy has been adopted in many countries that formerly
had a command economy. One reason is that the market economy has the freedom to pick what type
of business they would like to run. With a command economy the government chooses what type of
business they get. So, the market economy has more freedom to run their business the way they like,
while following the laws. In conclusion the countries that formerly had a command economy didn t
have as much freedom as the market economy does.
There are many changes I would find,

Small Business Administration Research
According to Small Business Administration research, only half of new businesses survive for the first
five years and only a third of new businesses are able to survive for 10 years. The inverse is
compelling as we can conclude that if only 50% of new businesses survive for the first five years, then
the other 50% fail in the first five years. We can also conclude that about 65% of new businesses don t
make it to the ten year mark.
Forbes reports an even more grim statistic, based on Bloomberg research, that of every 10 businesses,
eight fail within the first 18 months. What are the reasons businesses fail to thrive, given a 50/50
chance of survival and assuming a product or service for which there s a demand? Let s discuss six
reasons businesses fail and some ways you can avoid business failure.
Six Reasons Businesses Fail
1. Leadership Failure. Your business can fail if you exhibit poor management skills, which can be
evident in many forms. You will struggle as a leader if you don t have enough experience making
management decisions, supervising a staff, or the vision to lead your organization. Perhaps your
leadership team is not in agreement on how the business should be run. You and your leaders may be
arguing with each other publicly or contradicting each other s instructions to the staff. When problems
requiring strong leadership occur, you may be reluctant to take charge and resolve the issues while
your business continues to slip toward failure.

The Effects Of Climate Change And Variability Essay
Abstract
Climate change and variability poses a major challenge to current and future productivity of major
crops. During the last century, there has been a rapid increase in various greenhouse gas emissions,
leading to warmer temperatures, drought stress, and increased exposure to ultraviolet B radiation. At
the present rate of population increase and green house gas emissions it is predicted that future climate
will be warmer and drier, and there will be more occurrences of short episodes of extreme events of
various stresses. Crops often exposed to short episodes of various abiotic stresses or its combination
during its critical period of growth stages can limit its yield potential. Understanding of impact of
climate change drivers and climate variability will be critical in developing crop management
strategies to combat negative effect of climate change and variability. This review provides an
overview of the influences of elevated carbon dioxide, high temperature stress, drought stress,
elevated UV B radiation and their interaction on various physiological, growth and yield processes of
various crops. Elevated carbon dioxide will increase crop yield in C3 plants under optimum growth
conditions. However, under high temperature, drought and UV B stress conditions there will be very
limited or no benefits of elevated CO2 on grain yield. It is predicted that global mean surface air
temperatures will increase in the range of 1.5 to 4.5°C by end of this century. Similarly,

Risk Factors for Multiple Sclerosis
Familial and heritability studies have suggested a role for genetics in MS (11, 12). According to these
studies, MS does not result from gene mutations or aberrations; rather, polymorphisms in a number of
genes may predispose people to MS. These polymorphisms act independently and each can contribute
a little. Several studies have identified susceptibility genes on chromosome 6p21 and 17q22 in the
coding regions for major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC II) (11 14). Also the interleukin 7
receptor (IL 7R) gene alteration (15 17) and two single nucleotide polymorphisms within the
interleukin 2 receptor alpha (IL 2Ra) coding region have been linked to MS risk (18).
Pathophysiologically, these polymorphisms might have effects on the immune system.
There is no doubt that genetics has revolutionized our understanding about the human diseases.
Regarding MS; however, the practical application of these data has not been acquired yet. Gene
screening for finding patients prone to MS, is neither ethical nor scientifically supported.
In another way, genetic engineering might find some ways to treat MS or prevent further worsening of
the disease. This might work as a secondary or tertiary prevention strategy. Gene manipulation in cell
therapy studies have been experimented in animal models. This type of researches, not directly based
on the mentioned genetic background of MS, shows the effects of administering genetically
engineered cells in correction of some pathogenetic

could venture into the off road path of vehicles. Thus, entering said market of off road vehicles is
easier said than done, because of the dominance Polaris has displays with their utility and sport off

The Management Integration Er Exploring The Swirls,...
1. (1) The five eras of budgeting policy discussed by Mitchell and Thurmaier in their article Currents
and Undercurrents in Budgeting Theory: Exploring the Swirls, Heading Upstream are the Control Era,
Management Integration Era, Planning Era, Policy Era and Collaboration Era. The Control Era lasted
from 1906 until 1938 and was dominated by efforts by the public to regain control over budgetary and
tax policies; Progressivism was a powerful movement, and it helped drive the movement to create
more defined budgets, leading to the establishment of the executive budgeting system and line item
budgeting. The Management Integration Era, between 1939 and 1965, saw another increase in
executive control over budgeting in order to keep pace with the expanding bureaucracy. Line item
budgets were moved away from in favor of lump sum grants to federal agencies and the budgeting
process began to be viewed more as a political process than an economic one, as differing interests
among politicians determined how much money would be allocated to each agency or project. Next
came the Planning Era from 1960 to 1978 and was shaped by the Cold War and Great Society
programs. Budgets were now planned years ahead using the Planning Programming Budgeting
Systems, and economists proposed applying macroeconomics and microeconomics to understand
various facets of the budget. Between 1978 and 1992 was the Policy Era, which saw significant cuts in
federal grants to the states and returned budgetary

Symptoms And Symptoms Of Stroke
UCLA Lecture
Professor Reza Jahan starts the lecture talking about the importance of recognize signs and symptoms
of stroke, call immediately for help and go to an emergency room.
Professor Reza brings up the definition of stroke and the signs of stroke: impairment of brain
functions, decreasing sensations and movement.
Depending on the affected area, the symptoms will be different. If stroke affects the motor area, then
the motion function is sudden lost. If sensation area is affected, then, the symptoms will be loss of
sensitivity. If the area is that of speech, that people will have difficult to talk.
Jahan explains that a stroke occurs when a blood vessel is blocked by a clot or bursts, decreasing or
interrupting the blood supply with the oxygen and nutrients to the brain.
Two kinds of stroke
hemorrhagic stroke → bleeding into the brain manifest symptoms of the damaged area affected by
bleeding. Occurs mainly in high blood pressure or uncontroled hypertension, because hypertension
damage small vessels in the brain.
ischemic stroke → blood flow stops brain begins to starve for oxigen and nutrients and stops of
working, then the part of the brain that stop manifest symptoms, as loss of sensation or motion
function.
The treatment must be done quickly before the patient manifest symptoms.

Personality, Depression, And Uncertainty In The Great...
Uncertainty in the Great Depression
The Great Depression is associated with many images and ideas: stock brokers frantically selling,
families waiting in bread lines, Franklin Roosevelt s presidency, people hunting for any source of
income, and many others. Obviously, the Depression meant different things to different people, and it
is difficult to generalize about their experiences. However, there are some experiences that almost
everyone who lived through the depression shared. Perhaps the most widely experienced feeling
among ordinary people during the Great Depression was uncertainty, including questions about
economics, the definition of success, morality, and politics. Although very few Americans had
experienced uncertainty of the level the Great Depression brought, ordinary people had lived with
uncertainties for their whole lives. In fact, the years leading up to the Depression conditioned many
people to accept some high risks and uncertainties as a part of life, even as a requirement for a life
well lived. In the 1920s, books, magazines, and newspapers portrayed heroes with the traditional
virtues of intelligence, self control, generosity, and other timeless qualities. However, almost every
hero started with or achieved material wealth in addition to their moral qualities. These media sources
built on the tradition of the Protestant work ethic to equate economic success with a good work ethic
and general morality. This gave ordinary people an extra motivation to

Why Are Professional Athletes Too High
NFL Earnings to High The NFL has a labor union that has a percentage on how much the athletes get
paid which is 51% and the other 49% goes to the merchandise, stadiums, equipment and etc..
Professional athletes that get paid in the NFL usually make hundreds of millions by the time they are
done playing which I believe is too high. If they were to only play 1 2 years they would still have
enough for a nonprofessional athlete to live off of for most or their whole lifetime and most athletes
play for an average of 4 years. So, that s some of the examples that I think why professional athletes

Since 1997, us taxpayers have gave the league $4.7 billion to add to their Union and towards their
stadiums they were making. If us taxpayers keep giving more and more money to the NFL soon some
people are gonna become broke or start to and file a lawsuit. The U.S nationals debt is around $21
trillion and the National Football League s revenue is $8 billion which is a ton when some could be
used to pay off our debt or used to improve our non professional workers life/jobs/cars/houses and etc.
CONCLUSION
The NFL should not earn as much money as they do. The National Football League s revenue is $13
billion and 51% goes to the players .
If this continues to keep happening and they keep expanding they are going to be earning too much of
our taxpayers money and us taxpayers will eventually get upset soon. The NFL earns $7 billion from
us taxpayers as it is for their stadiums; Also $7 billion is almost their whole revenue. They should not
be earning that much of our money because people could spend that money on necessities like food,
shelter, and transportation especially for the non wealthy. The NFL is earning and getting to much of
our taxpayers money, from us, and from the

Tivo Marketing Case Analysis (Hbs)

TiVo
Marketing
Executive Summary
The disappointing sales performance during the Christmas 1999 season ended up being a priceless
lesson for TiVo s marketing team: it was the catalyst that created the need for a TiVo s new
communications strategy. However, defining this new marketing campaign was challenging,
especially after the feedback received about the product indicated issues like limited awareness and
hard to communicate functionalities. The main focus of this new marketing campaign is to select a
positioning strategy that will speed up the adoption of TiVo among consumers. The marketing team
has three options on how to position TiVo: 1) as an enhanced digital video recorder, 2) as a product
that gives viewers the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Viewers can pause live television to attend interruptions such as phone calls or unexpected visits. It
gives viewers the freedom to watch whichever program they want, whenever they want. With TiVo s
capacity to store up to 30 hours of recorded television, users reduce the hassle of using videotapes to
record television programs. Users virtually eliminate the possibility of missing their favorite shows,
since they can set up TiVo to record them. With these aforementioned features, TiVo will revolutionize
the way Americans view television.
Price. The current price of $999 for the 30 hour TiVo box is extremely high. It can easily discourage
any early adopter or a TV addict. Hence, the marketing team should reduce the price to $399, even
lower if financially viable. The more attractive the ticket (i.e. TiVo Box) for the ultimate TV
experience, the easier consumers will be lured in. The service fee structure seems at a very reasonable
price, it requires no major price adjustments.
Place. Electronic retail stores, such as Best Buy, Circuit City, and Sears serve as the best channels to
sell the product. It is imperative that the marketing team develops a training program for the sales
force of those retail outlets. Many consumers will have their first TiVo experience in a retail store;
hence, the salespeople must be prepared to demonstrate the benefits of TiVo in a flawless way. The
internet should be used as another channel to sell the product, especially the

Persuasive Essay On Dreamers
There are 800,000 undocumented immigrants protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
(DACA) passed by President Obama. Those persons known as Dreamers were brought illegally to the
United States at a young age by their parents. Now they have pursued careers, started families, they
have contributed to the United States of America, our country, their country. But on Tuesday,
September 5th, 2017, the former president Donald Trump ended this program, leaving thousands of
families with the uncertainty that if they will be back together again or not. Dreamers have brought
pride to this country, they have been admitted into the best universities, they have received the best
scholarships such as Bill Gates scholarship. DACA s deadline is October 5th; this is the last
opportunity for the Dreamers to continue with their right to pursue their education. Dreamers have to
stay in the United States and be legal citizens because they have spent their whole life here, they help
the U.S. economy, they bring cultural diversity to the country, the Dreamers as their name states want
to achieve the American dream by pursuing a better education. First, while dreamers were not born
here, they cannot go back to their origin country. Here is why. Most dreamers Only speak English
since they have attended school in the US at a young age. The United States is their home; they have
been living in the here country their whole life, they love this country as much as the legal citizens.

Self Love And Body Positivity
Self love and body positivity. Are the two subjects I have struggled with since last year. Self love is
when you have a positive view of yourself and are confident in yourself. And body positivity is
forgiving and affirming towards your body. There was a time when I used to not care what I looked
like. I wouldn t care if I had a noticeable blemish my face, had rolls of fat showing, or ate a whole
batch of cookies by myself. But somehow, one day everything changed.
For the longest time I wasn t proud of how I looked. The fact that I have glasses and have loads of
acne around my face, wasn t helping. I remember looking at the girls at school and wondering how
they have smooth skin, and why they are so beautiful. You have no idea how many ... Show more

I still struggle to form my body the best it can be.
Food was the main factor to why I judged my body. I love food, but I somehow it became my worst
enemy. Before I paid any attention to my body I would eat a bunch. I m talking about chips, cupcakes,
pizza, popcorn and other delicious foods. But of course, eating causes you to gain weight. So I started
to watch what I ate, and limit how much I consumed. At that point I wasn t enjoying the food as much
as I did before. While eating anything, in the back of my mind, I would start thinking of how many
calories the food has and I shouldn t be eating this . Heck, I would eat one cookie and instantly regret
it. Honestly, I m tired of starving myself. I want to love food again, I don t want to worry about
gaining weight if I ate a whole tub of ice cream. I have no idea when I will digest this, but I know I
will.
Since last year up till now. This is still an ongoing battle for me. I do have days when I don t feel
attractive, or want to look slim, or watch what I eat. I aspire to be thrilled and be fine with what I look
like, and accept my body for what it is. I blame society, we as women and men are pressured to look a
certain way. It s heartbreaking to observe people access plastic surgery or starve themselves to be
accepted in society. I m slowly learning that being slim and having the perfect face isn t important. At
the end of the day, what matters is

Taking a Look at Humanistic Psychology
Humanistic psychology is refereed as the 3rd force in psychology it was an alternative to
psychoanalysis and behaviourism. Humanistic psychology was instead focused on each individual s
potential and stressed the importance of growth and self actualization. A fundamental belief that
people are born good but that this can be distorted through social interactions and life experiences. In
this essay I plan to explain Carl Rogers s theories of person centred and how I have linked them to
myself. Carl Rogers stated that there was many key aspects which make up a person s personality.
The Organismic self the true self both conscious and unconscious. The Organismic valuing process a
fundamental concept within humanistic psychology. A tendency to automatically pick, work towards
and search for situations which fit into our inborn aspirations in order to lead a gratifying life. A
biologically driven process not aware of I or ME . The Actualizing tendency, human organism has an
underlying force which drives us to enhance and meet our maximum full potential physically,
spiritually and emotionally. The actualising tendency can never be destroyed only suppressed, it s been
described as a biological pressure to fulfil the genetic blueprint . Positive regard which is a learnt need
developed in infancy. A perception of experiencing the self making a positive difference to another. A
need that validates love, affection and respect from a significant other. The Self concept which

The Colonial Education System
When a person thinks of an education system, they most likely think of the education system that was
in place when they went to school. That system however had many different influences to become
what it was. Some of those influences came from the different regions in the American colonial time.
In American colonial time, the Europeans who were settling along the coast all shared a general
culture and heritage. They however had differences when it came to their economic, political and
religious beliefs. Those main factors, as well as others, such as language and geography, motivated
them to split into different colonies. Those colonies can be grouped into three regions which are the
New England, the southern and the Middle Atlantic colonies. Since each region had their differences,
with the main difference being the type of religion practiced, each region had a different style for
education. The New England colonies included Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and
Rhode Island. They followed the views of the Puritanism and Calvinism. The Puritan belief system
did not have a lot of patience with children, and they expected them to act as if they were young
adults. One view on children was that They were small savages who needed constant upbraiding and
discipline to curb their evil inclinations and desires (as cited in Gutek, 2013). The education system of
the New England colonies greatly reflected that view, where the teachers used great discipline to keep

Comparing French Film Carax And Holy Motors
If you knew nothing about french film you might think that this film is the weirdest/dumbest film you
have ever seen. When in reality it s the exact opposite. Carax is a genius and exemplifies french
culture and cinema as well as global cinema and culture in his film Holy Motors. He does this by
pushing the boundaries of what should be seen on the big screen, evoking emotion and portraying a
message for the viewer to ponder on.
What makes this film a great piece of french cinema is the connections it draws to other films, You can
see throughout film subtle hints at older pieces of french cinema which leads you to the conclusion
that Leos Carax was heavily influenced by such films. Throughout the course of the film Carax
dropped some subtle hints at some classic french films. He even went as far as casting Edith ... Show

Our appointments might not be as extreme as Mr. Oscar s but in a way we can all relate the feeling of

Its no secret Leos Carax has a true passion for cinematography especially French cinema and French

films make them great to watch. His message portrayed in the film Holy Motors is a message that
everyone across the world can relate to no matter how you take it. And his guts to push the boundaries

Crime Rates In America
In society s day and age, Americans believe that crime has been steadily increasing. This perspective
is based on information provided to the public by criminologist. Our society relies heavily on
statistical data to measure criminality and the effectiveness of the laws that govern society. This data is
collected and formulated to create what is known as national crime reports. These reports were
implemented to improve the structure of the laws that govern our society. In addition these reports
record criminal activity, the type of crimes committed, the locations of criminal trends, the volume of
crimes committed, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These reports are based only on the crimes that have been reported by victims or discovered by police.
In the cases of crimes that are less serious, the data used for these reports are that which resulted in
arrest only (not reported crimes). These reports do not include crimes that have not been reported,
have been omitted from these reports, or cases which prosecutors declined to prosecute due to lack of
evidence. Although these crimes are not indicated on these reports, they still contribute to our society s
criminality.
Another way that crime rates can be deceiving is the views between street crimes and white collar
crimes. To the public eye street crimes, which consist of crimes such as Murder, Rape, Robbery,
Assault, Kidnapping, Arson, etc. is the more devastating to society. Whereas white collar crimes such
as Embezzlement, Tax evasion, Price fixing, Bank fraud, Concealment of product liabilities, etc. are
not seen as detrimental to society. The UCR and NCVS reports tend to focus more on street crime as
apposed to white collar crimes. This can lead the public to believe contrary to reality. When
researching this comparison, we will find an overwhelming disparity which shows that white collar
crime affect society far worse than street crime in the form of financial cost, property lose or damage,
and personal injury or death (Robinson 2011).
In researching the topic of crime rates in America, I have learned that crime rates relate to

Abstract
We are replicating J.R. Stroop s original experiment The Stroop Effect (Stroop, 1935). The aim of the
study was to understand how automatic processing interferes with attempts to attend to sensory
information. The independent variable of our experiment was the three conditions, the congruent
words, the incongruent words, and the colored squares, and the dependent variable was the time that it
took participants to state the ink color of the list of words in each condition. We used repeated
measures for the experiment in order to avoid influence of extraneous variables. The participants were
16 17 years of age from Garland High School. The participants will be timed on how long it takes
them to say the color of the squares and the color of the words. The research was conducted in the
Math Studies class. The participants were aged 16 17 and were students at Garland High School. The
results showed that participants took the most time with the incongruent words.

Iodine Clock Reaction
Introduction:
First discovered by Hans Heinrich Landolt in the 19th century, the Iodine Clock reaction is what is
described as a chemical clock reaction, and today is one of only few known to science. It is useful as a
tool in determining the rate of a chemical reaction due to a marked change in the color of the reacting
solution when a particular reaction has been completed. The process is also practical as an
introduction to reaction rates and kinetics. A solution of hydrogen peroxide is mixed with one
containing potassium iodide, starch and sodium thiosulfate. After a varying amount of time the
colorless mixture suddenly turns dark blue which is one of a number of reactions related to the iodine
clock. The positive points of the lab would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the lab, a stopwatch was used to measure the time of the reaction taking place. The eye hand
coordination of a human simply cannot be trusted to be entirely accurate which is why there was
uncertainty about the accuracy of the stopwatch.Although the conduction of this experiment was
straightforward, it would be better if we had access to more potassium iodide. The concentration of
potassium iodide was too low, and as a result it delayed the time that the reaction took place. For
example, in trial 2, the portion of sodium thiosulfate is higher than potassium iodide s, so the reaction
delayed. The concentration of potassium iodide would be higher if the potassium iodide provided to us
was not diluted. The potassium iodide provided was at a concentration of 0.2 moles and if it were at a
higher concentration, we would ve gotten a quicker reaction. As an alternate method for this lab, solid
potassium iodide could be used instead of liquid potassium iodide since the amount of solid potassium
iodide can alter the concentration of the solution. In order to get solid potassium iodide, we would boil
liquid potassium iodide, and as a result, solid potassium iodide would be left in the plate due to the
evaporation of

  • 2. Identity In Auggie s Discovery In the chapter Costumes , Auggie describes the astronaut helmet that he wore constantly as a younger child to Miranda, the one to give Auggie the helmet, Auggie s father, who threw it away, and Auggie and his friends each interpret Auggie s astronaut helmet itself in contrasting ways. First of all, Miranda gave the astronaut helmet as a gift to Auggie years ago when Auggie was experiencing life throughout his early years; the astronaut helmet signifies assistance and friendship to Auggie. When Auggie was given the astronaut helmet, Miranda was aware that the many pedestrians on the street would give Auggie unfavorable reactions upon seeing his face as a result, Miranda felt the need to aid Auggie with his uncomfortableness with his facial ... First of all, when Via first discovers that her brother, Auggie, removes his Padawan braid as a result of a small remark of a classmate at his new school, she becomes angry at Auggie since she knew it was one of many of Auggie s characteristics that represented who he was. Ever since Auggie was a young child, he had an obsession over Star Wars along with his somewhat friend, Christopher, and he continued to have an interest in Star Wars when Via discovered that Auggie had removed the Padawan braid, she was upset because that was a true part of Auggie s identity. Since Via is very protective and supportive of her brother, Auggie, and as she is struggling with her own identity herself, she wants Auggie to take pride of his many wonderful traits and wants the Padawan braid to truly be a part of him instead of how Auggie is usually depicted among others the kid with a birth defect (pg. 91). Furthermore, Via was enraged when she found out that her brother, Auggie, cut off his Padawan braid because she wants Auggie to not allow anyone to distract his self confidence. Whenever Via witnesses an ungenerous remark from a passerby, she demonstrates her own confidence by exclaiming her fury back at them. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nancy was feeling unsafe and had an order of protection put on Mark for him to stay away from her workplace. Nancy was working at the hospital on April 24, 2003, during that time mark went to his neighbor and was telling his neighbor that he was going to kill himself and Nancy because Nancy had filed divorce. Mark neighbor thought mark was just talking crazy because mark had talked like that before. When the police officer arrived, they had charged mark with an invasion of privacy for violating the terms of the protective order and public intoxication. Then the state of Indiana charged mark with attempted murder, a jury trial was held and the jury found Mark guilty. Mark was sentenced to twenty five years in prison and after completing his time five years of probation. The Indiana court had accepted mark collier appeal for his attempted murder charge, Mark had said that the evidence was insufficient and his acts were a preparation for the murder. The acts that mark had done makes the courts believe that mark was going to go through with the crime. The facts that were presented to the jury would make them believe that Mark had to take the substantial step for the crime of attempted murder. If Mark was awake, was going into the hospital, and opened to door, Mark would be guilty of attempted murder. The Indiana Supreme Court made a decision that mark was not guilty of attempted murder. • 4. Positive And Negative Effects Of Dictatorships I have always found the human need for power and domination interesting, which is why I choose it for the Research Project. I am interested about how the Dictatorial style of government affects the overall growth of the humanities globally. My goal for this project is to research and understand the positive and negative effects of dictatorships on the academic growth as well as growth in the humanities. There are clear negative effects like the loss of literature in countries such as Germany, where specific types of book from certain eras were burned. In addition to that there are positives such as leaders focusing on education more than other areas of government spending. The paper that would be written using the information gathered through research on this topic would be persuasive, arguing that though there are some positive effects, dictatorships have an overall negative impact on intellect and the humanities. My working research question is: Are the net effects of dictatorships on the areas of the humanities including art and literature as well as academics as a whole positive or negative? My corresponding thesis statement is: On the grounds of global loss of art and literature as well as suffering academics, dictatorships have a negative effect on the country they govern as well as the world as a whole. I will research historical occurrences of dictatorships globally. In addition to that I will research the effects on academics in specific countries. I will also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. How to Improve Reading Comprehension Tony Sandoval III American Military University Coll 100 Derrah Q. Cassidy How to Improve Reading Comprehension How to improve one s reading comprehension? First, one must know what reading compression is, plain and simple it is the act of understanding what is being read. Learning how to read is probably one of the most important skills that a child will acquire in his/her lifetime (Pardo, 2011). Though it may sound easy, many people have difficultly remembering and understanding what they read. To become a successful reader, a child must be able to decode the individual words on the page and must be able to comprehend the text (McNamara, 2007). Move the hand so that the first line of text being read is above the side of the hand. Slowly move the palm to revile the words of the text at a regular speed so the reader can see the words that are being exposed. Next, is the finger trick with this method the reader should place the index finger on the first group of words that is about to be read. Move the finger in an irregular manner from the beginning of the sentence to the end. This helps the reader to focus on reading groups of words instead of individually. Another good tip to become a better reader is the card trick. Get an index card and place it over the first sentence. Then slowly begin moving it in a downwards, covering what was just read. This helps the reader to pay attention on what was just read since they will not have the opportunity to revisit the words. After the reader has finished, determine what was learned. Give the reader a chance to share what they have read in pairs or small groups. Then have them quiz themselves on the main points of the material. Tell a friend about it. By doing this, the reader should try to recall the important information in their own words. This will help them to remember and give a deeper insight into the topic. If both people have read the same material, the friend could give good feedback to ensure that the reader comprehends what was being read. The goal of having them discuss this is to involve more ... • 7. How Did John F Kennedy s Influence On American Culture During the 1960s, few people were more influential on American culture and values than President John F. Kennedy. His young and adventurous personality shaped his decisions through his almost three year presidency. While his presidency was short compared to most, his effect on America is still felt today. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29th, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts to Joseph Patrick Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. He began his political career in 1946, as a Representative, quickly becoming a Senator, then the President of the United States. During his campaign, Promised to lead Americans to a New Frontier. In his own words, Now in the thermonuclear age any misjudgements on either side about the intentions of the other could rain more devastation in several hours than has been wrought in all the wars of human history (Kennedy). In October of 1962, nuclear missiles were discovered in Cuba, as supplied by Russia. This, following the April 1961 Bay of Pigs failed invasion, were a recipe for an apocalypse. Kennedy ordered the US Navy to quarantine Cuba, turning away any ships carrying missiles. For some days a handful of men, operating largely in secret, held our destinies in their hands (Alsop 2). Thankfully, the nuclear war of our nightmares never came, as Khrushchev ordered all Soviet missiles to be removed from Cuba. This event became known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1961, Kennedy held a conference with Khrushchev about easing up on military threats against West Berlin, but nothing was solved and the Berlin Wall was built, not to fall till 1989. Russia began testing nuclear bombs again in 1961, breaking an official test ban. The United States began testing their bombs soon after, but did it underground, so as not to create dangerous fallout. In July, 1963, Russia, the United States, and Great Britain signed a treaty banning atomic testing in the atmosphere, outer space, and underwater. Testing was permitted underground (World Book 212j). • 10. Major Differences Between A Command Economy And A Market... 1.1 Market Economies There are many major differences between a command economy and a market economy. To start out with, a command economy is planned, where the government decides the main economic decisions. Next, a market economy is when individuals are free to make their own decisions as they buy and sell products. So between both economies, the command economy is planned and the market economy is free. In conclusion a command economy and a market economy, are two completely different things. I believe that the Private Enterprise is the most important. To begin with, individuals have rights to own their own business. However, the individuals might have their freedom but they also have to follow the laws. It, also let s the business owners produce goods with limited government decisions or directions. In conclusion, Private Enterprise let s individuals work, how they would like, while maintaining the laws. There are many reasons to why the market economy has been adopted in many countries that formerly had a command economy. One reason is that the market economy has the freedom to pick what type of business they would like to run. With a command economy the government chooses what type of business they get. So, the market economy has more freedom to run their business the way they like, while following the laws. In conclusion the countries that formerly had a command economy didn t have as much freedom as the market economy does. There are many changes I would find, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Small Business Administration Research According to Small Business Administration research, only half of new businesses survive for the first five years and only a third of new businesses are able to survive for 10 years. The inverse is compelling as we can conclude that if only 50% of new businesses survive for the first five years, then the other 50% fail in the first five years. We can also conclude that about 65% of new businesses don t make it to the ten year mark. Forbes reports an even more grim statistic, based on Bloomberg research, that of every 10 businesses, eight fail within the first 18 months. What are the reasons businesses fail to thrive, given a 50/50 chance of survival and assuming a product or service for which there s a demand? Let s discuss six reasons businesses fail and some ways you can avoid business failure. Six Reasons Businesses Fail 1. Leadership Failure. Your business can fail if you exhibit poor management skills, which can be evident in many forms. You will struggle as a leader if you don t have enough experience making management decisions, supervising a staff, or the vision to lead your organization. Perhaps your leadership team is not in agreement on how the business should be run. You and your leaders may be arguing with each other publicly or contradicting each other s instructions to the staff. When problems requiring strong leadership occur, you may be reluctant to take charge and resolve the issues while your business continues to slip toward failure. How to ... • 12. The Effects Of Climate Change And Variability Essay Abstract Climate change and variability poses a major challenge to current and future productivity of major crops. During the last century, there has been a rapid increase in various greenhouse gas emissions, leading to warmer temperatures, drought stress, and increased exposure to ultraviolet B radiation. At the present rate of population increase and green house gas emissions it is predicted that future climate will be warmer and drier, and there will be more occurrences of short episodes of extreme events of various stresses. Crops often exposed to short episodes of various abiotic stresses or its combination during its critical period of growth stages can limit its yield potential. Understanding of impact of climate change drivers and climate variability will be critical in developing crop management strategies to combat negative effect of climate change and variability. This review provides an overview of the influences of elevated carbon dioxide, high temperature stress, drought stress, elevated UV B radiation and their interaction on various physiological, growth and yield processes of various crops. Elevated carbon dioxide will increase crop yield in C3 plants under optimum growth conditions. However, under high temperature, drought and UV B stress conditions there will be very limited or no benefits of elevated CO2 on grain yield. It is predicted that global mean surface air temperatures will increase in the range of 1.5 to 4.5°C by end of this century. Similarly, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Risk Factors for Multiple Sclerosis Familial and heritability studies have suggested a role for genetics in MS (11, 12). According to these studies, MS does not result from gene mutations or aberrations; rather, polymorphisms in a number of genes may predispose people to MS. These polymorphisms act independently and each can contribute a little. Several studies have identified susceptibility genes on chromosome 6p21 and 17q22 in the coding regions for major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC II) (11 14). Also the interleukin 7 receptor (IL 7R) gene alteration (15 17) and two single nucleotide polymorphisms within the interleukin 2 receptor alpha (IL 2Ra) coding region have been linked to MS risk (18). Pathophysiologically, these polymorphisms might have effects on the immune system. There is no doubt that genetics has revolutionized our understanding about the human diseases. Regarding MS; however, the practical application of these data has not been acquired yet. Gene screening for finding patients prone to MS, is neither ethical nor scientifically supported. In another way, genetic engineering might find some ways to treat MS or prevent further worsening of the disease. This might work as a secondary or tertiary prevention strategy. Gene manipulation in cell therapy studies have been experimented in animal models. This type of researches, not directly based on the mentioned genetic background of MS, shows the effects of administering genetically engineered cells in correction of some pathogenetic ... (1) The five eras of budgeting policy discussed by Mitchell and Thurmaier in their article Currents and Undercurrents in Budgeting Theory: Exploring the Swirls, Heading Upstream are the Control Era, Management Integration Era, Planning Era, Policy Era and Collaboration Era. The Control Era lasted from 1906 until 1938 and was dominated by efforts by the public to regain control over budgetary and tax policies; Progressivism was a powerful movement, and it helped drive the movement to create more defined budgets, leading to the establishment of the executive budgeting system and line item budgeting. The Management Integration Era, between 1939 and 1965, saw another increase in executive control over budgeting in order to keep pace with the expanding bureaucracy. Line item budgets were moved away from in favor of lump sum grants to federal agencies and the budgeting process began to be viewed more as a political process than an economic one, as differing interests among politicians determined how much money would be allocated to each agency or project. Next came the Planning Era from 1960 to 1978 and was shaped by the Cold War and Great Society programs. Budgets were now planned years ahead using the Planning Programming Budgeting Systems, and economists proposed applying macroeconomics and microeconomics to understand various facets of the budget. Uncertainty in the Great Depression The Great Depression is associated with many images and ideas: stock brokers frantically selling, families waiting in bread lines, Franklin Roosevelt s presidency, people hunting for any source of income, and many others. Obviously, the Depression meant different things to different people, and it is difficult to generalize about their experiences. However, there are some experiences that almost everyone who lived through the depression shared. Perhaps the most widely experienced feeling among ordinary people during the Great Depression was uncertainty, including questions about economics, the definition of success, morality, and politics. Although very few Americans had experienced uncertainty of the level the Great Depression brought, ordinary people had lived with uncertainties for their whole lives. In fact, the years leading up to the Depression conditioned many people to accept some high risks and uncertainties as a part of life, even as a requirement for a life well lived. In the 1920s, books, magazines, and newspapers portrayed heroes with the traditional virtues of intelligence, self control, generosity, and other timeless qualities. However, almost every hero started with or achieved material wealth in addition to their moral qualities. These media sources built on the tradition of the Protestant work ethic to equate economic success with a good work ethic and general morality. This gave ordinary people an extra motivation to ... That system however had many different influences to become what it was. Some of those influences came from the different regions in the American colonial time. In American colonial time, the Europeans who were settling along the coast all shared a general culture and heritage. They however had differences when it came to their economic, political and religious beliefs. Those main factors, as well as others, such as language and geography, motivated them to split into different colonies. Those colonies can be grouped into three regions which are the New England, the southern and the Middle Atlantic colonies. Since each region had their differences, with the main difference being the type of religion practiced, each region had a different style for education. The New England colonies included Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. They followed the views of the Puritanism and Calvinism. The Puritan belief system did not have a lot of patience with children, and they expected them to act as if they were young adults. Although these crimes are not indicated on these reports, they still contribute to our society s criminality. To the public eye street crimes, which consist of crimes such as Murder, Rape, Robbery, Assault, Kidnapping, Arson, etc. is the more devastating to society. The independent variable of our experiment was the three conditions, the congruent words, the incongruent words, and the colored squares, and the dependent variable was the time that it took participants to state the ink color of the list of words in each condition. We used repeated measures for the experiment in order to avoid influence of extraneous variables. The participants were 16 17 years of age from Garland High School. The participants will be timed on how long it takes them to say the color of the squares and the color of the words. The research was conducted in the Math Studies class. It is useful as a tool in determining the rate of a chemical reaction due to a marked change in the color of the reacting solution when a particular reaction has been completed. The process is also practical as an introduction to reaction rates and kinetics. A solution of hydrogen peroxide is mixed with one containing potassium iodide, starch and sodium thiosulfate. The eye hand coordination of a human simply cannot be trusted to be entirely accurate which is why there was uncertainty about the accuracy of the stopwatch.Although the conduction of this experiment was straightforward, it would be better if we had access to more potassium iodide. The concentration of potassium iodide was too low, and as a result it delayed the time that the reaction took place. For example, in trial 2, the portion of sodium thiosulfate is higher than potassium iodide s, so the reaction delayed. The concentration of potassium iodide would be higher if the potassium iodide provided to us was not diluted. The potassium iodide provided was at a concentration of 0.2 moles and if it were at a higher concentration, we would ve gotten a quicker reaction. As an alternate method for this lab, solid potassium iodide could be used instead of liquid potassium iodide since the amount of solid potassium iodide can alter the concentration of the solution.
