Research in Motion (RIM), now known as BlackBerry, started in 1986 and became a leader in mobile innovations with the 1997 launch of the BlackBerry smartphone. It succeeded due to its secure business-focused devices and partnerships with carriers for worldwide distribution. However, increased competition from Apple and Android led to declining sales as RIM was slow to launch new products with improved technology. By 2015, RIM had decided to use Android for its latest phones like the Priv, as it struggled to compete on operating systems. While mobile has been a challenge, the company's strengths in areas like its QNX software and Internet of Things solutions mean it could focus more on these growing sectors going forward.
