2. Existing Product
The film IT is a thriller/horror film. I
have chose to research this product
as even in the trailer, the product
creates tension very effectively. It
does this by including very good
music and sound effects which are
played throughout the trailer. The
music changes as the trailer
continues. The first is very slow
and creates a very eerie
atmosphere for the product
whereas, the second one is very
intense. This is purposefully done
to build the tension and suspense
up allowing the audience to be
indulged in the product and have a
feel for the intensity of the actual
film. The fact that they can build up
such suspense in only a short
amount of time is an aspect I will
definitely try to include in my
product.
In the product, the pace of the shots reflect the tone of the
product. At the start of the trailer, the shots are a few seconds
long. This also matches the music in the background as this is
also quite slow paced. However, as the trailer progresses, the
shots pace starts to highly increase. This allows the suspense
of the trailer to build up gradually until it reaches its peak. The
quick cuts of the trailer give the product a more overall
intense feel which is the main purpose of a thriller/horror film
trailer.
The product is filmed in quite a
remote town surrounded in forests.
The fact that it is remote adds to
the thrill of the film as it creates a
more suspenseful atmosphere as
we feel as the characters don’t
really have an escape. The town is
also quite small meaning that there
isn't much space to hide therefore
forcing the kids to have more
interactions with Pennywise. The
idea that the town includes forests
also adds to the suspenseful
atmosphere. This is because forests
are stereotypically where bad
things happen in films therefore the
fact that they are included is clearly
to add an even more anxious feel
to the product.
In post production, the product has been edited to look
very dark and emotionless. This has been done by possibly
lowering the brightness and the saturation of each shot.
The editors will have done this to create an even more
eerie and intense feel to the film. However, the most
prominent colour change is in the only Georgie scene. This
is to perhaps resemble Georgie's death and to maybe
portray a theme foreshadowed in the rest of the film. I
might use a similar technique in my trailer as I think this
technique works perfectly for its purpose.
3. Existing Product
The trailer of the film the Dark Knight includes a
very dark and gloomy theme. This is used to
reflect the nature of the film and to symbolize
the dark events which occur. The dark theme is
also used to resemble the seriousness of the
batman character in Nolan's portrayal of him.
This will attract the target audience as it is what
the fans want as they all loved Nolan's previous
Dark Knight film therefore, they will want
something with a similar style and theme.
The film is an incredible thriller and builds up
tension very well. It does this by using
multiple different techniques. The scores in
the film are very good especially the joker
and Batman scores. They create a sense of
mystery as they play when an event of
excitement and adrenaline will occur.
However, the audience have no idea what or
when the event is going to happen. This
leaves them on the end of their seat and
completely griped to the film. In the trailer,
the score isn't played instantly. This is to
allow the tension to build up instead of just
throwing the audience right in the deep end.
This creates more suspense and conveys the
tone of the film perfectly.
The product is filmed in a large city. This is
mainly because this is where the batman
character has to be set however, it does create
an almost enclosed feel. The fact that Gotham is
also an Island creates the idea that there is no
escape. This builds more tension is as its almost
like the characters have to face the joker.
The film includes different special effects.
However, most of them are explosions. This
is included to add more adrenalin to the
trailer. This makes the product seem more
exciting and gripping. This will appeal to
the target audience as the products
audience will be teen to young adult males
therefore explosions and violence will
definitely appeal to them.
The trailer includes an array of short but good action sequences. This is a
good feature to include as it will highly attract the target audience as this is
one of the key features they want to see in the film. Also, it allows the
product to be more intense therefore making the trailer more griping and
fulfilling it thriller purpose. The fact that there are short action sequences
attracts the audience to the film as after watching how good they are they
will want to experience the full sequence meaning they will go out and buy
the actual film when released. This is a very good selling technique.
4. Existing Product
The film cape fear is a
thriller about a stalker. I
have decided to use this
trailer as research material
as it fits into the exact same
film genre as my product
whilst matching many of
the themes and ideas of my
product. From the trailer, I
can pick up different ideas
as it does include some
good features.
The product begins by setting a
very peaceful tone. It portrays this
tone by including very calming
music and including very relaxed
dialogue. The very beginning of
the trailer includes multiple shots
of some calm water and a very
quite atmosphere. This adds to
the tone and creates an even
more relaxed feel. However, the
trailer takes a turn. This switch
happens when the the villain Max
Cady is introduced. The product
becomes much more intense. It
portrays this tone by having a
change of music as the music is
much more suspenseful and the
volume of the music is also
increased. The change that
happens is a very good technique
to include. This is because it hits
the audience when they aren't
expecting it therefore creating a
significant amount of suspense
and tension for the audience. This
leaves them gripped to the film.
After the switch of tones in the trailer,
the shot duration highly increases as
each is just a quick shot. This creates a
very suspenseful atmosphere leaving
the audience highly gripped. This is a
good technique to use as it enforces
the theme wanted to be conveyed
more effectively.
The product is filmed in quite moody
lighting as there isn't much colour and
saturation in the trailer. This is done to
portray the negative message of the
product and to reflect the personality
of Max Cady. I will use a similar
technique in my trailer as I want the
colour tone to reflect my villain.
The very ending to the trailer includes
many loud sharp sound effects when
cutting between the different shots. This
builds even more tension and also acts as
a sort of jump scare for the audience. This
leaves them on the end of their seat and
adding to their thriller experience.
The trailer ends with a sharp sound effect but then
switches back to its peaceful tone. This is to create a
sense of mystery for the audience. It also ends on a cliff
hanger leaving the audience completely inside the
product and wanting to watch the full film. This is a very
good selling technique. As well as that, this technique
leaves the audience overrun with tension therefore
fulfilling the products purpose.
5. Existing ProductThe film unknown is a thriller
which includes many good
elements.
The product slowly builds up the
tension as the product
progresses. This is a good
technique to include as it allows
the suspense to gradually build
up therefore, the climax in the
trailer is much more effective
and emotional. This creates the
perfect atmosphere for the film.
In post production, the editor have
clearly added a filter or colour
corrected the product make it seem
more depressing and serious. This is
done to add to the tone of the film and
also reflect the characters emotions.
This helps portray the overall message
of the product. However, in my
product, I will include a more
emphasized version of this colour
correction as I want my trailer to look
as negative as possible. This is because
I want the trailer to reflect the highly
negative tone of my product.
The trailer includes a music change
around half way through the trailer. This
is to symbolize a tone change and to
show how the climax is building up in the
product. The mood switches from
peaceful to quite intense. This allows a
shot of adrenaline to occur in the trailer.
This will appeal to the target audience as
they are watching the film to see action
and excitement.
In the trailer, the peaceful and calm
beginning doesn't last very long-
around 20 seconds. This feature is
included to show the audience that
the film is more dedicated to the
excitement and thrill aspect of the
product instead of the emotional side
of things. This is done to attract the
audience and make sure that they
carry on watching the trailer. This is
because if the trailer concentrated
more on the emotional and pleasant
side of the film, the adrenaline junkies
who want to watch this film for the
excitement would not be as
interested.
As the product progresses, the
cut between shots starts to
become much quicker. The
editors have done this to build
anticipation and create a much
more intense atmosphere for the
audience. With the quick cuts,
there is also some sharp loud
sound effects behind them. This
adds to the suspense and
adrenaline of the product.
6. Existing Product
Prisoners is an American
thriller film. I have included
this trailer in my research as I
think it includes some very
useful features. The product
includes a very good switch
of tone. This happens when
the problem occurs in the
trailer. The tone is changed
by including a change of
music to make the trailer
seem more intense and the
cuts start to become much
quicker. In fact, the cut speed
increases as the trailer
progresses. This is to build up
the intensity steadily. The
tone switch works so well
because the start of the
product is very calm. The
shot changes are very relaxed
and all the dialogue is very
love related. The characters
are also all acting very
affectionate to each other.
This makes the switch even
more intense. This is a very
good technique to use as it
creates an overall very
suspenseful atmosphere
which leaves the audience on
the edge of their seats.
The fact that the beginning shots
of the trailer doesn't include
music creates a calm
atmosphere. However, it still
creates a sense of tension. This is
because we can hear every
sound. This causes suspense for
the audience and makes it feel
like something could go wrong at
any point. This is a good
technique to include as it sets a
calm but slightly tense start to
the product leaving the audience
slightly on the edge of their seat
and ready for the rest of the
trailer.
The product includes quite a dull
colour tone especially on the
outside shots. This is used to
create a very negative feel for the
product which reflects the story of
the film. This will have been done
by filming in quote dark places, a
good use of lighting and also in
post production they will have
lowered the saturation and
perhaps the brightness. I will
defiantly include a feature like this
in my product. This is because it
creates the exact tone that I want
to be portrayed in my trailer.
The music featured in the product has a very up and down
effect. This is done by increasing and decreasing the
volume whilst in the editing process. The music in the
product seems to get louder and louder but then
suddenly switch to much quieter. This creates a very
uneasy feel for the audience which leaves them very
tense. This is an interesting technique to use however, it
works very effectively.
The product does increases its intensity as n progresses.
However, in the final shots of the trailer, the pace
decreases significantly. This allows the audience to think
they n relax however, the shots are still very intense. This
is done by decreasing the volume of them music until it
goes completely silent and the only noise is the aggressive
dialogue of the main character. This creates an incredibly
tense atmosphere and leaves the audience dying to watch
more. This links to the idea of how the product ends on a
sort of cliff hanger. This is a very good selling technique as
it makes them desperate to see the full film.
7. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
The common features of my researched products are the fact that they all know how to build up
tension incredibly well. This Is done because the main purpose of a thriller is too create a very
intense and suspenseful atmosphere. As well as that, all my products include quite moody and
gloomy lighting. This has been included to reflect them theme of story and symbolize different
emotions of the characters. All my products include the most shots of the main character. This is
to show the audience who is the centre of attention in the film therefore allowing the audience
to try and connect with them emotionally in the trailer and get a feel for the character. This will
be the main interest to the film therefore if they like the main character, this will persuade them
to come see the film when released. All my products include quite prominent music and sound
effects. For example, they all include sharp sound effects near the later stages of the trailer
when it is most intense. To match this, the trailers also include very quick cuts in the later stages.
Both these techniques are used to add to the intensity of the product and to create a very
suspenseful atmosphere setting up for the full film. Most of my research products have a
gradual build up. This allows the audience to feel with the characters and to experience the
trailers climax point at its peak. Overall this makes the trailers much more gripping to watch.
8. • What aspects of the research will you include within your own
production work?
From my research, I have collected many different skills and techniques which I could use in my
product. First of all, I am definitely include a build up in my trailer. This includes by beginning the
product quite calm and relaxed however, the trailer then switches to become much more
intense and thrilling. This forces the audiences to the edge of their seats and builds up an
immense amount of excitement and adrenaline. Because of this the trailer becomes much more
suspenseful and fulfilling its thriller purpose. To match that, near the ending of my trailer I will
include some very fast paced cuts. This adds to the intensity of the product and leaves the
audience completely indulged in the product. My product will not only be filmed in quite moody
lighting, it will also be edited in post production to have a much more dark and negative tone it
it. I will do this by perhaps lowering the brightness, lowering the saturation and alerting the
colour tones of the shots. I am choosing to include this in my product as it portrays the tone of
the product and makes it fit the negative mood perfectly. It also allows the product to appeal to
my target audience as they ae coming to watch something full of suspense and negativity, not
something humorous and positive. From my research, I would like to include the idea of having
very intense music in my product as this will make the trailer more exciting to watch whilst
building up incredible amounts of suspense and intensity.
Research Analysis
10. Secondary Audience research
This graph shows the most popular films in the age range
of 15-24 year olds, this includes both genders. From the
data, we can see that a very large quantity of the graph
are action driven films. This provides the evidence that
on average, the age range of 15- 24 year old are most
interested in watching action and adrenaline filled films.
This connects to my product as mine will be filled with
action and anticipation. However, the fact that the
highest attendance shows us that there is still 54%
missing. This means that the older ranges on average,
prefer action based films even more than the younger
generations. This tells me that I should aim to target my
product a the older generation which id =s not what I
initially planned to do
This graph shows the most popular films within the male
gender in 2015. From the graph, we can clearly see that
every single film featured is very action based. This links
to my product as although it may not be an action film, it
will contain significant action scenes. This shows how my
trailers target audience will be the male gender as this
kind of film clearly appeals to them.
11. Secondary Audience research
From this graph I can see that that
most popular age range for a thriller
genre is 55+. This also links to the
action genre as 55+ year olds are also
the most popular age range of this
genre. The graph peaks at this age
range because some of the elements
including in these films are either too
obscure for a younger viewer or may
not be funny or immature enough for
other viewers. From the graph, I can
also see the thriller genre is quite
balanced between the genders
however, males much prefer an action
film which will be a huge aspect of my
product. This means that my target
audience will definitely be older
males. As the age of males increases,
so does their interest in thriller and
action films. This tells me how mature
I have to try and make my product as
this is what my appeals to my target
audience the most.
12. Secondary Audience research
The set of data here compares on average
how different genders prefer different genre
of film. The graph does this by giving a
percentage of what gender has said they like
each genre. The genres I am concentrating
on are Drama, Action and Thriller/Mystery.
First of all, the graph shows how females
prefer Dramas men however, the percentage
difference isn't huge meaning this genre of
film stills highly appeals to males. Action is
preferred by men but again, woman are still
very interested in this genre. The
Thriller/Mystery genre is slightly favored by
men however, it is almost equally liked by
the genders. This tells me that I should base
my target audience from the type of thriller I
am going to make. For example, if it is ore
drama based, I should target it at females
whereas, if it is more action based, target it
at males. As my product will contain very
intense action, I will target it more at males.
13. Secondary Audience research
• Observation:
• What this says about my
audience:
• How will your product
appeal to this audience:
This data I have collected shows the the popularity of the thriller director Alfred
Hitchcock between the male and female genders. From the data, we can clearly see
that Hitchcock's films were quite balanced between the genders however, they were
more popular with the male gender. This enforces my idea of targeting to the male
gender for my final product. The data did show me the age range interested by his
work. It stated that it was the older generation but, this would mainly be because his
films were made much before the current generation.
14. Subject Research
I have researched an interview with a real psycho stalker. This is
because I wanted to analysis how a real one acts and behaves. This
will help me to try and create the best stalker in my product as I can
take some aspects from a real one and incorporate their traits onto
mine. This will help create a realistic feel for my villain therefore
indulging the audience into the product.
The woman's eyes seem to move around a lot , they sort of fly around
the room. This makes her seem slightly crazy as she clearly has some
sort of disability. I may include a similar feature in my product as it
does work well to create a crazy and wild feel for the character.
The woman also talks about some very unusual topics. This shows
how she isn't mentally healthy adding to the crazy stereotype of a
stalker. I may use a similar feature as i want my stalker to seem crazy
and obsessive.
From this product, I have also seen how interviews work quite well to
get across a personality. Because of this, I might inspiration from this
and include a interview in my product. However, I will make mine
more intense then this one as I want to build as much suspense as
possible in my trailer.
15. Subject Research
For my second piece of subject research, I wanted to see and learn
how to create very suspenseful music. I did this by watching
videos on YouTube to try and improve my skills. I wanted to research
this specific area because the score of a film/trailer is one of the
most important parts especially in a thriller. This is because it creates
the tone of the product and in a thriller is one of the main
components to build up the tension and suspense.
From the video I watched, I have learnt to rise the tempo and
volume as the scene progresses. This switches the tone from an
eerie feel to quite intense. In my product I will use a similar
technique however, as my product is only a trailer, I will increase the
tempo and volume of the music as the whole trailer progresses
instead of just a specific scene.
The video has also told me how strings are a good instrument
to use to build up tension. This is because them seem to create a
very intense sound which can shock the audience when played.
The director Alfred Hitchcock used this technique in many of his
films which evidences the fact that strings are perfect for creating
16. Subject Research
I decided to research what locations to film my
product in. This is because the location of a
thriller can really effect the suspense of the
product. If the location is bad, the product can look
a bit cheesy therefore not fulfilling its thriller
purpose. Whereas, if the location is perfect, the
story can build and immense amount of tension
and suspense.
The website I have looked at displays a number of
different possible filming locations which work for
the thriller purpose. This includes Backstreets, Old
houses, Apartment buidlings,Cars, Trains and The
wild. From these places, I think the best and most
achievable places for my to film in would be
backstreets, cars and abandoned places. This is
because I know exact types of these locations
around me which would be good for filming. As
well as that, all three of these places if filmed well,
can be made to look incredibly tense which is the
tone I want to convey when creating my trailer.
17. Subject Research
For my fourth piece of subject research, I decided to research how
a stalking/the act of stalker effects the victim. I wanted to research
this as I think it will help me when creating the victim in my
product. This is because it allows me to see and read about real
experiences and scientific evidence meaning that my victim
character will seem as real as possible. This will create a more
professional tone to the film whilst creating a significant amount of
tension for the audience as the actors performance will look like
real life events.
From my research, I have learnt how it effects the victims mental
health, physical health, school life, social life and financial situation.
Their mental health is effected This portrays what serious
problems stalking causes to the victim. I need to incorporate this
idea into my product as I want the events in the trailer to look as
real as possible.
19. Practical Research
For my first experiment for my practical research I decided I was going to see
how steady cam compared with a hand held shot. I decided to just film a
simple walking sequence for this idea. This was because it is simple to do and
allowed me to see everything I needed to know. After doing the experiment, I
can see that the steady cam would be a much better choice. This is because
although a hand held shot was okay even in a simple walking sequence it
didn't stay completely in line which is negative as I want the shots in my
product to look as clean and professional as possible. The fact that it had a bit
of movement in the shot showed that if I had to do a much longer or more
complex shot, this type of shot would not meet my requirements. However, I
may use a hand held for some shots as it does look very natural which I may
want to include in my product.
I will use the steady cam shot for many of my shots. This will include walking
sequences and calm shots. However, I think I will use the hand held shot in
some fast sequences or close up shots. This is because although I want the
product to look professional, I want it to have a sort of realistic element to it.
This is so the audience become more indulged in the film and feeling the
intensity of the product as much as possible. This will allow me to create the
bets possible trailer.
20. Practical Research
For my second experiment for my practical research I decided to
test out different lightings to see what would fit with the theme
of my product. I filmed in the underground carpark at college
because this is quite dark lighting. I also filmed on the outside
grounds of college. This is because the lighting is much brighter.
After filming n both types of lighting I have decided that the the
underground car park lighting would fit my theme better than
the outside lighting. This is because it creates a much more tense
atmosphere as its is darker meaning the audience wont know
what is around the character in shot. This creates a sense of
mystery and suspicion for the audience. However, I think I will
include the bright lighting of the outside as it does convey quite
a positive atmosphere. This is good as I could include this at the
start of my trailer to convey a relaxed and more happy feel. After
this, if will hit the audience with a complete switch of tone. This
technique builds incredibly amounts of intensity therefore fitting
the genre of trailer I am creating.
21. Practical Research
For my third piece of practical research, I decided to film a close and
medium/long shot to see what builds more suspense and intensity. The
sequence include a character looking worried and running out of shot. I
decided to film in the underground car park in college instead of the outside
as this is much darker lighting. This creates a more suspenseful atmosphere
therefore fitting with the theme of my final product.
After filming both shots, I have decided that a close shot builds tension more
effectively. This is because you can see the emotion of the character more.
This is good as it will make the audience feel more for the character. As well
as that, it only focuses on the character meaning you cant see their
surroundings. This builds tension as it creates a huge sense of mystery for the
audience and leaves them suspicious of what could happen. This technique
would work with anything in shot. If you jut focus on a specific object or
person, it creates a significant amount of suspense for the audience. I will
definitely include this in my final product.
22. Practical Research
For my fourth experiment for my practical research, I decided to test out
different theories for music. This is because music is a huge part of the
thriller genres and is one of the key aspects of building tension. Because
of this, I decided to test out how the volume of the music would build
different levels of tension. I decided to create a track on garage band to
test this. I recorded tow different tracks, one very loud and one with the
volume decreased to make it much quieter.
After listening to both, I have decided that the louder one works more
effectively. This is because if it was played it would leave the audience
on the edge of their seats because of its intensity. This is good as this is
the main purpose of a thriller film/trailer. As well as that, the trailer
should be very intense as it only has a short time to convey the message
and theme of the film therefore, the music in it needs to resemble the
actual film.
The quieter track did still work. It would add a suspicious element to the
product which could work perfectly for some scenes. However, for m
specific trailer, the louder track would work much more effectively.
23. Practical Research
For my fifth piece of practical research I decided to test
out different colour corrections and effects on some
shots. I have decided to do this so I can see what different
effects would fit the theme of my final product. This will
save me much needed time during production. For my
first one, I only changed the colour correction. I made
everything look very dull and gloomy. This was because I
feel like this would fit the theme of my product very well
as I need a negative tone to be conveyed.
For my second test, I decided just to put a
look on the shot. I decided to go with one
called SL IRON NDR. This was because it gave
off quite a depressed look. This was mainly
to so with its blue colour tone. I think this
would quite well for my final product
however, it didn't’t have the moody look
which I was crucial for my product.
Finally, I combined the two. This meant adding the colour correction I
had already tested and then finishing it off by adding the look SL IRON
NDR. This creates a very depressed look whilst also creating something
that includes an element of intensity and suspense. I think this will
portray the them of my final product perfectly.
