1. Unit 3: Digital Media Skills Index
Opening statement:
The video product I have chosen to create is a short film with a monologue questioning
who we are if we don’t have memories of our lives.
My product holds the interest of 16-19 year-olds as the film is based on an ambiguous
character of a similar age that would intrigue teenagers as well as being interested by a
monologue which may raise questions that they haven’t thought of before.
The product is also original as I have created the character as well as creating the script
and storyboards.
I have made my film though-provoking as I have used different quotes which will raise
questions among a teenage audience and uses questions throughout the monologue.
In the brief it states that the product should puzzle, challenge, or intrigue and audience. I
beilve that my filmwould intrigue the audience with the ambiguity aspect of it as well as
having a character of a similar age for the audience to relate to. It could also be said to
puzzle the audience as many questions are left unanswered, such as how my character
ended up where she is, and it could make the audience question who they are due to the
memories and experiences they have.

05 – Strange Habit this is a song by July Talk which I recognise is not royalty free however if
this was the industry then I would seek permission from the artist and recording studio. I
chose this song has it has a mysterious vibe to it and thought it may fit my idea well.

Leah shots as my film is a monologue and
doesn’t really have scenes, I had to make
sure I had enough shots of Leah, who
plays my main character. So I filmed
different angles and shot types, to keep
the film looking interesting and engaging
to the viewer.

5. Activity 2
I started the editing stage by loading in my assets and looked through them to check that I
had them all before I started. I then began to make my title screen and loaded in my
opening shot.
I then selected new title and added “who?” in the font and colouring I wanted. I chose a
typewriter font as I like the aesthetic of it and thought it suited the type of film I made.
I then animated the title to make the letters appear as if they are being typed. I did this by
adding a crop effect and putting a hold so that each letter appeared separately.
6. I then added a typing sound effect in time with when the letters appear. I thought that by
having an animated title instead of fade in would engage the audience more as it looks
more professional meaning it keeps the audience’s attention.
I then loaded in my audio, my monologue and forest background noise, so that I could edit
around them. I chose take 5 of my monologue as it sounded the clearest and well spoken. I
also thought that a forest sound track would be better suited than the song I had originally
planned to use, so used it instead.
The first clip I used was of my character’s eyes. I used this as my opening shot as it is
intriguing and the audience would want to find out who she is and what is happening.
To make some parts of my filmlook like a
memory/dream I used an overlay which made
the footage look like old 8mm film. I used this
on the parts where my character talks about her
mother, to distinguish it from the rest of the
film.
7. I added a warp stabiliser to some hand held shots to make them smoother. By adding this it
would appeal to the audience more as they wouldn’t be put off by shaky camera work.
I added additive dissolve to transition between the
“memory” shots and my main character. This was to
make it look more like a flash back and would make it
easier for the audience to see the difference.
I then adjusted the brightness of some shots so that the footage matched. This is so that
shots didn’t look out of place and looked more aesthetically pleasing to the audience.
8. To edit the ending, I
adjusted the scale and
position so that the
computer screen slowly
zoomed outwards until
its original size. I did
this first so that I could
then match up the
footage of my character
after.
I added an inverted mask so that the footage
would show through the computer screen and
would be the correct size.
After that, I added in my footage of my character
and redid the effect of it zooming outwards using
the scale and position. I also had to adjust angle
of it so had to change the rotation.
9. I used fast colour corrector so that I
could fade the saturation to black
and white. The fade is in time with
the zooming out so that as it comes
out of the computer it becomes
black and white. This it to make it
look more realistic and like security
footage.
I then added a black and white effect to the
rest of the footage being played through the
computer
To add the overlays, I changed the position, scale
and rotation so that it matched the footage of the
computer and my character.
I did the same thing for the other
overlay so they both zoomed out at
the same rate.
I chose to put overlays over the
footage as it would look more realistic
to the audience, making it more
appealing.
10. Once I was happy with the edit I used a non-
red key to cut out the green and make the
overlays see through.
Lastly I added letter boxes to my
video to make the film look more
professional and aesthetically
pleasing to the viewer, making it
more appealing to an audience.
To do this I simply added a title
and drew to boxes at the top and
bottom of the footage. Then I
put it over all of my footage.
