Worm Wicking Beds for Drought Gardening
The author has been experimenting with and refining sustainable wicking worm beds over the past year. They have found that the beds use little water while maintaining moist soil conditions suitable for growing vegetables and supporting a thriving worm farm. The largest bed described is 2700mm by 1650mm by 600mm deep. It incorporates a worm farm to naturally fertilize the soil and minimize the need for external inputs. The author aims to replace their conventional garden beds with larger wicking worm beds that are self-sustaining ecosystems.

Requirements to build a permanent structure for mushroom production

- 2. Permanent structures Place Electricity Mushroom house Store room Straw Cutter Water Source Water Tank Sprayer Polythene sheets 2/3 tier rack system Sand
- 3. Place : A suitable area for mushroom production unit must be chosen. It could be either at backyard of house or at any fallow land. Mushroom production unit can be set up either indoors or outdoors as per one’s convenience. Electricity : Proper electric supply is a basic infrastructural requirement. Mushroom house : The main house where mushroom cultivation takes place.
- 4. Store Room : In this room all the equipments and materials for mushroom cultivation are stored. Straw Cutter : It is used to cut straw into required length for bed preparation. Water Source : A water source such as borewell is required to fill up the water tank. fig : Straw cutter fig : Water tank
- 5. Water tank : In water tank the straw bundles are drenched to make them moist. Sprayer : Used to spray water on mushroom. Polythene sheets : It is used to cover the beds. fig : Sprayer fig : Polythene sheets
- 6. 2/3 tier rack system : It is useful where the mushroom house has space constraint. Mushroom beds can be stacked one above the another on a steel or wooden rack platform to conserve space. Sand : Sand is used on the lower side of the bed for moisture maintenance. fig : 3 tier rack system
- 7. Recurring Expenses Paddy Straw Pulse powder/Wheat bran/Rice bran Spawn Chemicals required for sterilization of substrate. Different sizes of polythene bag (perforated).
- 8. Paddy Straw : It is used as subtrate for mushroom cultivation. The straw are tied in bundles of about 1.5m – 2m in length. Usually 14 paddy straw bundles are used to prepare a bed. Pulse powder/ Wheat bran/ Rice bran : It acts as food supplement and provides nutrition. Spawn : It is the propagating material of mushroom. Chemicals required for sterilization of substrate : Methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol.
