2. PURPOSE OF POULTRY HOUSING
To protect from inclement weather, direct sun rays and rain
To minimize effects of dampness
To provide safety from the predators
To apply scientific management practicals
To provide suitable atmosphere for expression of all genetic
potential
3. BASIC PRINCIPLES
Layout should not allow visitors or outside vehicles near the birds.
The sheds should be so located that the fresh air first passes through the
small chicks shed, followed by adult chicks.
There should be a minimum distance of 60-100 feet between two sheds
in the same farm.
The egg store room, office room and the feed store room should be
located near entrance to minimize the movement of people around the
poultry sheds.
The disposal pit and sick room should be constructed only at the
extreme end of the site.
5. TYPES OF POULTRY HOUSES
Open sided

6. HOUSE ORIENTATION
As wind below is mainly East to West or West to East. So width
should be facing East and West while lengthwise sides are
North and South.

7. CONSTRUCTION
DETAILS
ECONOMY OF CONSTRUCTIONPoultry houses need not to be elaborated and also not that expensive.
They should be built as cheaply as is consistent with good construction.
Durability
More cheaply built houses are proved to be expensive at the end, for
they soon have to be replaced. The roof, in particular, should be strong
enough to withstand heavy snow and wind storms.
Foundation
The foundation should be strong and high enough to support adequate
height of plinth
8. CONTINUE…..
A good foundation should protect from dampness, keep out
surface water during rainy season
Floor
The floor should be moisture proof, termite proof, rat proof,
plain, free from cracks, easy to disinfect. So, Concrete floor
is better
Wooden floor can also be used
9. CONTINUE…
Walls and Partitions
The walls and Partitions may be solid enough to support roof and to
withstand heavy winds.
Bricks, cement, and sand are commonly used for construction of walls.
Ventilators
In semi-controlled environmental house with automisation, ventilators
are kept at 0.5m height from floor level in every 3m section of side
walls and exhaust fans are (36” ) with motors installed at ridge for
ventilation.
Roof
The roof should be solid, well insulated and leak proof.
10. CONTINUE…
The types of the roofs commonly used are gable, shed and
combination roofs.
Asbestos cement sheets are commonly used as they have more
insulation capacity than metal roof.
Doors
The doors should be at most convenient place.
Usually 1m wide and 2m high doors serves the purpose.
If possible A small disinfection ditch at the entrance as a Foot-bath
should be used.

Windows
The purpose of windows in a poultry house is to admit light, provide
ventilation and to remove or bring in birds for marketing purpose.
Window sashes should be so installed that they can be readily
removed for cross ventilation. Stock sized windows (with small panes
of glass) sashes are cheapest.
Width
The width should range between 6.2m to 9.0m but not more than
9.0m.
Length
The length of a poultry farm depends upon the strength of the birds.
12. SPECIAL FEATURES AFFECTING
CONSTRUCTION PATTERN OF
POULTRY HOUSE
TEMRATURE
Comfortable zone of temperature for best performance is 18.3 to
21.5 Celsius
However ranges of 22 to 28 Celsius and 11 to 17 Celsius
are also comfortably tolerated by them.
Ventilation
Good ventilation consists of continuous circulation of air into and out
of the building.
13. CONTINUE…
HUMIDITY
Moderate humidity of about 38% to 42% in poultry house helps in
getting better performance.
SUNLIGHT
By facing the house toward south and having the windows or openings
high in the front, the sunlight will reach a large part of the inside of the
house each day
SANITATION
Smooth cement floor will make the cleaning of the floors an easy task.
15. SPACE REQUIREMENTS
The floor space requirement of broilers varies
depending on their body weight at the time of
marketing, housing systems, marketing age and
ambient temperature.
The feeding and watering space also varies
depending on the environmental temperature and
health condition of the birds. The following is the
approximate floor, feeding and watering space
requirement for broilers.

From 19 days to 42 days 1000 cm2 (1.1 sq.ft.) 6-7 cm 3 cm
17. LAYOUT PLANS FOR POULTRY
FARMS OF VARIOUS SIZES
SMALL FARM
The farm with single house rearing where only adults or birds
from day-old stage to disposal are reared in the same house
having the strength of about 500-1000 birds is usually called
as small farm.
MEDIUM FARM
For broiler farming 3 broiler houses with intake at every 3 to
4 weeks can be adopted having strength of 1000 to 3000
birds in each flock.

LARGE FARM
In case of broiler farming usually weekly intake of 3,000 to
10,000 broilers is adopted which requires about 8 to 9
houses on farm.
LAYOUT OF POULTRY FARM
A small sized poultry farm does not require any special
layout. But the medium and large size farms require some
special considerations for placement of buildings on farm.
