Read the following conversation Pharmacist:   Hi.  Can  I help you? Mrs. Webb:   Yes, Please.  Could  I have something for a cough? I think I’m getting a cold. Pharmacist:   Well,  I suggest  a box of these cough drops. And  you should  get a bottle of vitamin C, too. Mrs. Webb:   Thank you. And what do you have for dry skin? Pharmacist:   Try  some of this new lotion. It’s very good. Mrs. Webb:   OK. Thanks a lot .
Answer the following questions Explain briefly what do you remember about modal verbs. What do we use them for? In this dialogue, what are we using modal verbs for? What health problems do you recognize in the dialogue? Name them.
Can – Could - May for requests; suggestions Can/May  I help you? Can  I have a box of cough drops? Could   I have something for a sore throat? May  I have a bottle of aspirin? What do you have/suggest for dry skin? Try some of this lotion. I suggest some ointment. You should get some skin cream. If you have any questions raise your hand!!!
What would you think if someone asks you something like this?: -  “Give me…”  -  “I want …”   We use modals because they are more polite than asking directly for something.
Exercise (Individual Work) Create a dialogue which includes requests and suggestions (use what we studied in class).
