When the adipasayaw birds pass
under the eaves of the house, gumayam gumamitay,
serve them wine in a glass cup
because they are birds of our Lord God.

it is not that you are not being offered blood of a piglet
it is not that you are not being sprinkled with wine
darkly rich with age
which can come from the rich field of Vachi.

Our Mother Tongue- Poetry (Jose P. Rizal)
If truly a people dearly love
The tongue to them by Heaven sent,
They’ll surely yearn for liberty
Like a bird above in the firmament.
Because by its language one can judge
A town, a barrio, and kingdom;
And like any other created thing
Our Mother Tongue- Poetry (Jose P. Rizal)
Every human being loves his freedom.
One who doesn’t love his mother tongue;
Is worse than putrid fish and a beast;
And like a truly precious thing
It therefore deserves to be cherished.
Our Mother Tongue- Poetry (Jose P. Rizal)
The Tagalog language akin to Latin,
To English, Spanish, angelical tongue;
For God who knows how to look after us
This language He bestowed us upon.
As others, our language is the same
With alphabet and letters of its own,
It was lost because a storm did destroy
On the lake the Bangka in years by gone

JUAN
TAMBAN
28
In the eyes of many, Juan Tamban is a spectacle, someone
you can’t help but look at and be
disgusted of, a street child who eats rats,
cockroaches, and lizards to earn a living. In the eyes
of the authority, he is a juvenile criminal guilty of
snatching. In the eyes of the academe,
he is an oddity worthy of a special
case study, a case which Marina Torres,
a graduate student-social
worker, reluctantly accepts.
Will Marina be able to make an
objective study or will her heart triumph over the mind
when she becomes closer to the harsh realities of injustice
and abuse that is Juan’s life? Is she really helping the
child or just helping
herself?

Kay Ang Kahilom Usa Usab Ka Siloy
Haw-ang ang tanang garay,
tanang pasumbingay,
Kon motugbaw ang pako sa
panghupaw ni
nanay:Pastilan, pa-ita ining
gredwan ra ta,
Kilawon unta’ng inengles
kon kasabot pa…
Mitugdon sa iyang dila ang
agiw sa naugdaw
Nga mga balhibo sa ugis ug
langyaw
Nga langgam. Inanay naabo
ang bulok
Sa iyang matang
nagkaawop, nagpirok-pirok.
Kay Ang Kahilom Usa Usab Ka Siloy
Samtang iyang gipahiluna
ang karaang antipara
Samtang gapunsisok ang
mga anunugba
Sa among bag-ong plorisin.
Kaniadtong lunhaw
Ang akong pagtilok sa
gamut ug liso, tataw
Ug sarang na ang siga-sayaw sa
among lamparilya.
Sa among amakang bungbong
misalida
Ang iyang kamot,
mipasundayag og pako tadlas
Sa akong alimpatakan. Aron dili
ka maihalas
Kay Ang Kahilom Usa Usab Ka Siloy
Sama nako, matod
niya, basa gyu’g taman…
Tin-aw gihapon hangtud
karon, dili daman,
Ang dam-ag sa iyang tingog.
Ug ako nagtuo
Nga kadtong gipaagiw nga
letra sa alpabeto
Nga iyang gisagol sa sabaw
isip palihi
Niadtong punga-punga pa ang
akong ikasulti
Mao’y mipikas sa akong dila
pinaagi sa mga pulong
Nga duna’y pako, hangtud ako
karon napakong
Kay Ang Kahilom Usa Usab Ka Siloy
Sa panganod. Apan bisan
nanghupaw si nanay,
Nagkayuring sa langyaw
kong garay, wala’y
Laing tingog sama kalunsay
sa iyang pahiyom
Gawas sa pagsiloy sa among
kahilom.

A first experience of America is at the heart of this collection.
In 1987, on a Fulbright grant, the author travelled to America to
study at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, for his
M.F.A. Creative Writing. He stayed there for three years
meeting people and making friends, travelling whenever he
could, and cultivating the peripatetic and peregrine in himself,
and gathering a rich hoard of experiences that found expression
not only in this book but also in his subsequent books.

Poem
Sheba, Sheba, open your eyes!
The apes defile the ivory
temple, the peacocks chant
dark blasphemies:
but I take your body for mine
to trample, I laugh where once
I bent the knees.
Yea, I take your mouth for mine to
crumple,
drunk with the wisdom of your
flesh. But wisdom never was
content and flesh when ripened
falls at las: what will I have when
the seasons mint
your golden breasts into golden
dust?
Poem
Let me arise and follow the
river
back to its source: I would
bathe my bones
among the chaste rivuletsthat
quiver
out of the clean primeval
stones.
Yea, bathe me again in the early
vision
my soul tongued forth before your
mouth
made of a kiss a fierce contrition
salting the waters of my youth…
Sheba, Sheba, close my eyes!
Poem
The apes have ravished the inner temple,
the peacocks rend the sacred veil
and on the manna feast their fill-
but chaliced drowsily in your ample
arms, with each brief bliss that dies
my own deep sepulcher I seal.

The Rural Maid
◈ Thy glance, sweet
maid, when first we
met, Had left a heart
that aches for thee, I
feel the pain of fond
regret— Thy heart,
perchance, is not for
me.
◈ We parted: though we
met no more, My
dreams are dreams of
thee, fair maid; I think
of thee, my thoughts
implore The hours my
lips on thine are laid.
The Rural Maid
◈ Forgive these words
that love impart, And
pleading, bare the
poet’s breast; And if a
rose with thorns thou
art, Yet on my breast
that rose may rest.
◈ I know not what to
name thy charms, Thou
art half human, half
divine; And if I could
hold thee in my arms, I
know both heaven and
earth were mine.

OLD HOUSE
We are this house’s future
ghosts
moving soundlessly
between rooms
suffusing the air with our
private laughter.
Our smells begin to
cleave to the wood.
The old scents have
started to vanish
as we rub names off
cabinet doors.
But still we hear the
floorboards sighing
at night. It is the house
remembering.
OLD HOUSE
This house, at fifty, is old
enough
to keep secrets, to gather
moments.
It has memories of lives
other than ours
and when it remembers,
we hear the echoes.
Or see a waving. But always,
always we feel the sorrow
of something left behind to carry
the heaviness,
to bear all the marks on its skin,
to open its doors, once more, to
passing shadows.

Salvaged Poem ◈ “Inmoments of pique, or youthful pride, or despair, [Emmanuel Lacaba] had thrown or given away many of his early poems. In 1973 he submitted to the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature what he could put together under the title Salvaged Poems—this was before the word “salvaged” acquired the peculiar Filipino meaning it now has, of being executed summarily or extrajudicially.”—Jose Lacaba, in the second edition’s editor’s note

Poem Sheba, Sheba, openyour eyes! The apes defile the ivory temple, the peacocks chant dark blasphemies: but I take your body for mine to trample, I laugh where once I bent the knees. Yea, I take your mouth for mine to crumple, drunk with the wisdom of your flesh. But wisdom never was content and flesh when ripened falls at las: what will I have when the seasons mint your golden breasts into golden dust?

Poem Let me ariseand follow the river back to its source: I would bathe my bones among the chaste rivuletsthat quiver out of the clean primeval stones. Yea, bathe me again in the early vision my soul tongued forth before your mouth made of a kiss a fierce contrition salting the waters of my youth… Sheba, Sheba, close my eyes!

Poem The apes haveravished the inner temple, the peacocks rend the sacred veil and on the manna feast their fill- but chaliced drowsily in your ample arms, with each brief bliss that dies my own deep sepulcher I seal.

The Rural Maid ◈Thy glance, sweet maid, when first we met, Had left a heart that aches for thee, I feel the pain of fond regret— Thy heart, perchance, is not for me. ◈ We parted: though we met no more, My dreams are dreams of thee, fair maid; I think of thee, my thoughts implore The hours my lips on thine are laid.

The Rural Maid ◈Forgive these words that love impart, And pleading, bare the poet’s breast; And if a rose with thorns thou art, Yet on my breast that rose may rest. ◈ I know not what to name thy charms, Thou art half human, half divine; And if I could hold thee in my arms, I know both heaven and earth were mine.

OLD HOUSE We arethis house’s future ghosts moving soundlessly between rooms suffusing the air with our private laughter. Our smells begin to cleave to the wood. The old scents have started to vanish as we rub names off cabinet doors. But still we hear the floorboards sighing at night. It is the house remembering.

OLD HOUSE This house,at fifty, is old enough to keep secrets, to gather moments. It has memories of lives other than ours and when it remembers, we hear the echoes. Or see a waving. But always, always we feel the sorrow of something left behind to carry the heaviness, to bear all the marks on its skin, to open its doors, once more, to passing shadows.
