Representation
in Music Video’s
By Olivia Doherty
Ethnicity
• The first representation I am looking at is
Ethnicity.
• I have chosen two music video examples from
the hip-hop/Rap music genre to analyse for
ethnic representation.
Jason Derulo - Wiggle
• My first example is Jason Derulo – Wiggle.
• This video is largely performance based.
• It shows the representation of the black female body. The
song as well as the camera angles used focus on the
women and the way that they dance.
• Camera shots like close-up and movements like zooming
are used in the video to draw emphasis to females chest
and bottom.
• The men are continuously surrounded by black females.
This is stereotypical for a hip-hop/Rap music video and
could have connotations of Afro-American women being
promiscuous.
Jason Derulo - Wiggle
• The mise-en-scene in this video shows the
stereotypes of afro-american males and
females.
• The females are dressed in revealing clothing
and the males are often seen without tops on
as well as wearing chains around their neck.
• People may be offended by this representation
because it could be seen as very stereotypical
as well as being offensive to women as they
are objectified in this video.
• This video conforms to the typical stereotypes
of afro-american people.
Iggy Azalea - Work
• My second example Iggy Azalea – Work
• I have picked this video to show the artist as
opposed to the music video. This is because I
wanted to show an artist who challenges the
typical expectations of someone in the hip-hop
genre.
• This artist challenges typical stereotypes of Hip-
hop/Rap artists as they are mainly Afro-American
and most popularly male.
• The mise-en-scene in this music video shows the
women in skimpy clothing. This conforms with the
stereotypes of a rap video.
Region/Place
• The second representation I am looking at is
Region/Place.
• I have chosen one music video examples from
the House music genre to analyse for this
representation.
Avicii – Wake Me Up
• This video is purely narrative based.
• The story surrounds the idea of being lost and
shows the journey of the characters finding
themselves.
• It could also link in with gender as it shows two
young females that are finding it hard to fit in – this
links with the judgemental nature of society and
how the girls may feel lost and unaccepted.
• The main characters are represented as the odd
ones out as they look different to the rest of the
community.
• When the location changes they automatically fit in
– They have found where they belong.
Avicii – Wake Me Up
• The mise-en-scene in this music video helps to show the
representation of certain regions and places. And this is
vital to show the location change in the video.
• The costume in this video was used to show the diversity
between the characters and where they live. The main
characters are dressed very modern but live in a country
style rural village. This helps to highlight the fact that
they don’t belong or fit in there.
• The second location shows a concert where the artist of
the song features in the video. In this new location
people are dressed like the main female character and
this helps us to understand that she has found where
she belongs.
Avicii – Wake Me Up
• Throughout the video certain camera work is
used to help show the representation of region
and place.
• Close-ups are used to show little detail for
example highlighting how the characters contrast
their starting location. And also the tattoo’s the
main characters have.
• Establishing shot’s show the location and
settings. This is important for this specific
representation.
• Conforming to sterotypes – journey leading you
to find where you fit in.
Male Gaze Theory
• This theory was developed my Laura Mulvey
• There are 3 main points:
- How men look at women
- How women look at themselves
- How women look at other women
- It was developed in 1975 and demonstrates the belief
that film audiences have to view characters from the
perspective of a heterosexual male
