LOCATIONS
In music videos, London is commonly portrayed as
a busy, iconic, rainy, negative city full of crime,
poverty and homelessness.
Types of music videos set in this location can vary.
The music videos filmed in London tend to either
represent patriotism or poverty.
An example of a music video filmed in London, is
"Our House" by Madness. This music video
portrays the band Madness filming a music video
in a house in London, The band originate from
London so they decided to stick to their roots when
producing this music video because they are proud
of where they are form. This is a positive
representation because the music represents no
crime or poverty and instead shows the band
enjoying themselves in their hometown.
In contrast to this, "The A Team" by Ed Sheeran
shows a homeless drug addict becoming a
prostitute in order to get money for drugs and
eventually dying from an overdose. This is a
negative representation as the video portrays drugs,
homelessness, crime and prostitution.
A mansion is a very large house owned by people
with a lot of wealth. These houses usually have a
swimming pool and lots of parties are held in this
type of location.
The music videos filmed in this location are usually
for positive upbeat songs and this type of music
video usually portrays wealthy people enjoying
themselves and partying. In music videos mansions

is “Best Song Ever” by One Direction. This music
video shows the band celebrating and dancing in a
mansion and this creates a positive representation
as it shows the band enjoying themselves. This was
also one of the band’s earliest singles and this
video could also represent success for the band and
connote the idea that they have made it as they are
celebrating in a rich location.
Berlin is represented as a cultural and popular
location and it is also perceived as a symbol of
freedom, peace and diversity due to the Berlin Wall
being knocked down. Berlin is the capital city of
Germany and is also represented as a busy place
full of tourists.
The types of music videos filmed here are usually
videos which represent and promote freedom and
peace this is because the Berlin Wall was knocked
down and the Berlin Wall is well-known for
separating different cultures and when it was
knocked down this meant that Berlin became more
diverse.
An example of a music video filmed in Berlin is
“Stay (Faraway, So Close!)” by U2. This video
represents angels comforting stressed civilians of
Berlin and in the framing leftover military
equipment from the Cold War. This is a positive
representation as it is representing that war is over
and there is peace in Germany. Furthermore, angels
are portrayed as peaceful figures and this is also a
positive representation

is famous for partying, drugs, sex and alcohol. It is
well-known for it’s famous clubs such as “Club
Tropicana” and “Café Mambo”.
The types of songs filmed in this location are
normally upbeat and positive songs. Music videos
filmed in this location usually represent people
partying in a sunny location (a beach or a booze
cruise) or in a night club.
An example, of a music video filmed in Ibiza is “I
Took a Pill in Ibiza” by Mike Ponser. This video
shows Ponser as a “druggie” in a night club
becoming increasingly intoxicated as the song
continues. This music video matches the stereotype
that Ibiza is a location for partying and consuming
drugs.
Miami is similar to Ibiza as it is a place for partying.
However, the people in this location tend to be more
wealthy. People in Miami tend to be wealthy as it is an
expensive place to live and also wear revealing clothes as

representations as it portrays various people and celebrities
dancing, singing and enjoying themselves in Miami.
GENDER
GENDER
Males, females and transgender are the varieties of genders
that can be portrayed within a music video.
GENDER
There are a lot of common gender stereotypes such as:
• Men are more dominant and the dominant sex
• Men are more sporty
• Women are submissive and do as they are told
• Women are sexual objects
GENDER
Men and women are objectified as sexual objects in modern
day music videos. Women are portrayed as weak and
vulnerable in music videos. Furthermore, men always have
a perfect muscular body and if a man is overweight in a
music video it is normally for comedy purposes. This
creates problems for the younger generation as they feel
jealous of these people and this has created problems
amongst society.
GENDER
LMFAO challenged the stereotypes in music videos with
their music video for “Sexy and I Know It”. This music
video shows overweight men pulling good looking women
which hardly happens in music videos.
AGE
AGE
Age is represented in music videos through common
stereotypes, camera angles, props, actions and costumes.
Age can be split up into four categories of:
• Children
• Teenagers
• Adults
• The elderly
AGE-CHILDREN
Camera angles are an effective way of representing
children. Children are portrayed as weak and high angle
camera shots represent this as it makes the children appear
as if they are being looked down upon. Children may also
behave in a childish manner and wear childish clothes.
AGE-TEENAGERS
Stereotypically all teenagers are moody so if someone is
behaving moody in a music video the audience can assume
that the person is a teenager. Furthermore, the costumes
which teenagers wear are normally cool/trendy designer
clothes. Some teenagers are represented as rebellious in
music videos whereas others are portrayed as geeky and use
lots of technology.
AGE-ADULTS
Adults are usually portrayed as mature people who are
superior to most other people. Their superiority can be
portrayed through low-angle shots which make them appear
bigger and superior to other age categories.
AGE-THE ELDERLY
Old people can be represented through costumes. For
example, old people stereotypically wear woolly clothes.
Stereotypically, old people are portrayed as quite dull and
boring characters within music videos.
COSTUME
COSTUME
The costumes links into age. For example, people from the
same age group tend to wear a similar style of clothing. So
age can be represented through costumes.
COSTUME
Costumes also help to represent the type of song. For
example, if it is a slow song the costumes are normally
quite formal and outfits like tuxedos and dresses are worn.
Whereas if it is a more upbeat song, there tends to be a
more positive vibe and in this case the women wear more
revealing clothes and men wear more casual and trendy
costumes.
COSTUME
In music videos, women are objectified as sexual objects so
in music videos they tend to wear clothing which is
revealing. In music videos men are represented as people
who have a perfect body, so men tend to have be dressed
quite smart and casual. If a male is overweight in a music
video, it is usually for comedy purposes.
COSTUME
Wearing formal clothes and jewellery portrays people as
wealthy in music videos. This is because these are very
expensive items to buy so this portrays wealth.
CLASS
CLASS
The different classes represented in music videos are the
upper class and the lower class.
CLASS
In music videos, people from the lower class are portrayed
as people with a poor quality of life and have barely and
money. In contrast to this, people from the upper class are
portrayed as wealthy characters with a very good quality of
life with lots of expensive items.
CLASS
The lower class are represented in a negative manner
whereas the upper class are portrayed in a positive way.
CLASS
For example, in Ed Sheeran’s “A-Team” a homeless woman
is represented with a drug addiction and becomes a
prostitute and eventually dies from a drug addiction. This is
a negative representation of the lower class. In One
Direction’s “Best Song Ever”, the band are portrayed
enjoying themselves and dancing in a mansion. This is a
positive representation of the upper class because it shows
wealthy people enjoying themselves.
ETHNICITY
ETHNICITY
Stereotypically, white people are portrayed as people who
are quite common and live normal/average lifes. In contrast
to this black people are stereotypically represented in a
negative manner. For example, they are commonly
portrayed as drug dealers or people who live a life of crime.
ETHNICITY
Urban and R&B music has developed a lot and become
popular. This is heavily dependant on the media. R&B
music was Rhythm and Blues music however it is now quite
urban and the media has promoted R&B artists a lot and
made the genre more popular.
ETHNICITY
Rappers are usually African-American however, Eminem
challenged this stereotype as he is a white rapper who has
had a very successful career.
ETHNICITY
People from the black ethnicity are commonly portrayed in
a negative manner as they stereotypically live a life of
crime.
ETHNICITY
Stereotypically the two communities of white and black do
not mix together. However Aerosmith challenged this
stereotype as they released a song called “Walk this Way” in
which they collaborated with RUN-DMC who are a black
group.
