RELATIVE PRONOUNS
Mónica Giraldo Medina
Relative Clauses
We use relative clauses to give additional information about
something without starting another sentence. We combine sentences
with a relative pronoun. With those pronouns your text becomes more
fluent and you can avoid repeating certain words.
There are different relative Pronouns: Relative Pronouns
Who / That
That / Which
Where
When
Whose
Who / That : PEOPLE
Juanes is a singer. He is from Medellin.
Sentence 1 Sentence 2
That / Which : THINGS/ANIMALS
A fridge is a thing. It keeps food cool.
Attention:
Use WHICH after a comma or between commas when clause can
be deleted without changing the meaning of the sentence.
For example:
The car, WHICH was parked in the parking lot, was stolen.
When : TIME
I went to Japan last May. Last May, the cherry
trees were blossoming.
Where : PLACE
New York is a city. You can find the Statue of
Liberty in this city.
Whose : POSSESSION
I know the boy. His mother is a nurse.
LET´S PRACTICE: Combine the following sentences
using the correct Relative Pronoun.
1. Nessie is a monster. It lives in Loch Ness.
2. I live in Medellin. I study in that city.
3. The boy _____ sister is in my class was in the bank at that time.
4. Fernando Botero is an artist. He painted figures in exaggerated
volume.
5. The table, _____ got broken, was my grandmother’s.
6. Shakira is a Colombian singer. She has two children.
7. I went to central park last Sunday Morning. Last Sunday
morning, the weather was perfect.
LET´S PRACTICE: Combine the following sentences
using the correct Relative Pronoun.
1. A watch is a thing. It tells the time.
2. Do you know the boy  _____  father is a lawyer?
3. A bee is an insect. It makes honey.
4. The man _____ mobile was ringing did not know what to do.
5. Chile is a country. The American soccer cup was played in that
country.
6. She came to visit me on Wednesday. On Wednesday, I was not
home.
7. The fruit, _____ is on the table, isn’t fresh.
LET´S PRACTICE: Combine the following
sentences using the correct Relative Pronoun.
1. James Rodriguez is a Colombian soccer player. He plays in Real
Madrid.
2. Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a Colombian Nobel Price. He wrote
100 years of solitude.
3. The Roman Colosseum is an ancient place. Men and lions fought
in that place.
4. The woman _____ daughter was crying tried to calm her.
5. I graduated a summer. That summer, it was really hot.
6. A ferry is a ship. It carries people across the water.

Relative Pronouns

  • 2. Relative Clauses We use relative clauses to give additional information about something without starting another sentence. We combine sentences with a relative pronoun. With those pronouns your text becomes more fluent and you can avoid repeating certain words. There are different relative Pronouns: Relative Pronouns Who / That That / Which Where When Whose
  • 3. Who / That : PEOPLE Juanes is a singer. He is from Medellin. Sentence 1 Sentence 2
  • 4. That / Which : THINGS/ANIMALS A fridge is a thing. It keeps food cool. Attention: Use WHICH after a comma or between commas when clause can be deleted without changing the meaning of the sentence. For example: The car, WHICH was parked in the parking lot, was stolen.
  • 5. When : TIME I went to Japan last May. Last May, the cherry trees were blossoming.
  • 6. Where : PLACE New York is a city. You can find the Statue of Liberty in this city.
  • 7. Whose : POSSESSION I know the boy. His mother is a nurse.
  • 8. LET´S PRACTICE: Combine the following sentences using the correct Relative Pronoun. 1. Nessie is a monster. It lives in Loch Ness. 2. I live in Medellin. I study in that city. 3. The boy _____ sister is in my class was in the bank at that time. 4. Fernando Botero is an artist. He painted figures in exaggerated volume. 5. The table, _____ got broken, was my grandmother’s. 6. Shakira is a Colombian singer. She has two children. 7. I went to central park last Sunday Morning. Last Sunday morning, the weather was perfect.
  • 9. LET´S PRACTICE: Combine the following sentences using the correct Relative Pronoun. 1. A watch is a thing. It tells the time. 2. Do you know the boy  _____  father is a lawyer? 3. A bee is an insect. It makes honey. 4. The man _____ mobile was ringing did not know what to do. 5. Chile is a country. The American soccer cup was played in that country. 6. She came to visit me on Wednesday. On Wednesday, I was not home. 7. The fruit, _____ is on the table, isn’t fresh.
  • 10. LET´S PRACTICE: Combine the following sentences using the correct Relative Pronoun. 1. James Rodriguez is a Colombian soccer player. He plays in Real Madrid. 2. Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a Colombian Nobel Price. He wrote 100 years of solitude. 3. The Roman Colosseum is an ancient place. Men and lions fought in that place. 4. The woman _____ daughter was crying tried to calm her. 5. I graduated a summer. That summer, it was really hot. 6. A ferry is a ship. It carries people across the water.
