Relationship Between Electrical and Mechanical Engineering
How important is Electricity in Mechanical Engineering?
 Very important. It is necessary that you know the basics of electricity if you are
becoming a mechanical engineer.
 Machines - If you are going to work in an industry in the manufacturing sector,
you need to know how much electricity is required to run the machines and how
to control it. You don’t need to know in detail how the controllers work, but
you need to have a basic understanding.
 Heat Transfer - Cooling of electronic appliances has a direct impact on the
electricity used by the component.
 Power Plant engineering - This deals with the generation of power and the
various methods to generate power. If you don’t know electricity you won’t be
able to link this to real life applications.

 Seeing the various subjects where electricity touches mechanical engineering,
electricity is not directly involved but has an indirect effect.
 The theory you learn in college needs to be applied to the real industry.
Electricity adds to the overall cost of the industry.
 Therefore as a mechanical engineer, we should optimize our operations so that
we can reduce the use of electricity and the cost.

Importance of Electrical Engineering
 Want to run a compressor? You need electricity.
 Want to run a pump? You'll need electricity.
 Want to start an engine? You'll need electricity to generate spark from spark
plug.
 Want to get relief from uncomfortable temperature in summer? Electricity is
must.
 Want to enjoy ice-cream, kulfi in summer? You need electricity to get
refrigeration effect.
 Want to run machines in industry? Electricity is must.
Whether it's lathe, drilling machine, milling machine, CNC machine, broaching
machine, ECM, EDM or any other machine, you'll definitely need electricity.

Want to produce electricity?
 You'll need mechanical engineers in either hydraulic power station, steam
power plant, nuclear power plant or small plant running on diesel.
 The bottom line is electricity and mechanical components are relatives, close
relatives.

 A mechanical engineer have to work in different fields,among them electrical
field is very important.
 In installations, assembling and applications, mechanical engineers need some
basic knowledge about electricals.

 Locomotive workshops
 Refrigeration and Air conditioning
 Thermal power plants
 Robotics
 Mechatronics
 Hydro power plants
 Renewable energy

 Remember, the manufacturing of electric motor is a responsibility of electrical
engineer, but then, application of that electric motor is a responsibility of
mechanical engineer.
 Future of automobile industry is completely depended on electricals.
Because of global warming, governments are no more encouraging IC-
engines(releases CO in to atmosphere). So the future alternative solution for
automobile industries is electrical vehicles.

Electric Vehicles Future of the Automobile Industry?
 The invention of the automobile has been nothing less than a revolutionary
change.
 This invention has shown a lot of positive as well as negative drawbacks than
any other invention could possibly show throughout the history of the
transportation industry.
 Automobile industry has affected all aspects of society. From work to family,
from economy to environment. Over the generations, automobiles have highly
influenced the lives of people and instead of getting away with it, it has become
a crucial part of every individual’s life.
 As we have always heard, ’Growth is the only evidence of life’. There is always
some scope of doing better than before.

 The automobile industry’s quest to limit its impact on the environment and
transform the landscape into a sustainable mode of transportation is at high
density despite the recent economic crisis.
 If Electric vehicles rules the automobile industry in the near future, then it will
help the environment in a lot of ways like improving the quality of the air,
lesser use of carbon in transport, motoring cost and also reduce global warming.
 The electric vehicle market has seen some significant development owing to
require for resolving future energy resources.

 I won’t say this will completely rule the market in the near future but it is rising
and becoming an integral part of the automobile industry.
 Eventually, it will grow for good and will definitely mark its crucial present in
the history of the automobile industry.
 If electric vehicles comes into existence, it will require far less periodic
maintenance and will as well require far less parts and services.
 However, the amount will not be zero and there still would be non-drivetrain
components of the vehicle that will still require service.
 So, the servicing part of the industry will not go away entirely but there will be
some downsizing in the auto repair industry.

Who Invented Electric Cars?
 The exact date is still unknown, but what history has come up with in these
years, it is believed that electric cars were invented by Scotsman Robert
Anderson somewhere in between 1832 and 1839.
 Although, it is still under debate and not a proven fact because somewhere
around 1834 or 1835, American Thomas Davenport has also been credited as
the inventor of the first electric car.
 Crude beast was the first ever electric car that got made. According to sources,
three other people who were part of this revolutionary invention are Professor
Sibrandus Stratingh of Groningen, Holland, Christopher Becker, and Hungarian
inventor Anyos Jedlik.

Why Electric Cars are More Efficient?
 Electric vehicles can produce much less emissions than burning fuel in engines
of the vehicle but it totally depends on how the electricity has been generated.
 Having said electric vehicles have zero emissions, the quality of the air will
improve dramatically in cities where wind, solar, waves, tides or nuclear power
is used to charge batteries.
 One thing that brings certainty is that if even around half a million people of the
country’s population are driving electric cars, we can see a dramatic fall in the
consumption of oil.
 On the other hand, we will see some rise in coal or gas power consumption.

1.Self-Driving Vehicles:
 Driverless vehicles will bring a revolutionary change in the automobile industry and
they will keep running out and about without the intercession of the driver in the
driver’s seat. I agree it might sound impossible, but, IT IS NOT! It is now close to
reality with a few automakers like Nissan and Chevrolet who have accompanied
their separate models of such autos.
2.Artificial Intelligence(AI) Controlled Vehicles:
 The infusion of artificial intelligence in automobiles is progressively getting
intense and responsive and right now, for that matter, they are largely adapted
to react to orders as normal as voice messages.
3.Vehicle to Vehicle Connectivity:
 Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) network normally permits autos to offer data and
staying in contact with each other. Vehicles can connect on various parameters
concerning speed, street conditions, activity, danger and much more. It will not
just enhance auto wellbeing but will effectively help vehicles maintain a
strategic distance from course that may take a little time to achieve the goal on
the account of substantial activity.

 All these taglines will shape the completely prepared Vehicle to Vehicle
network arrangement without bounds.
 The invention of electric vehicles has been a relatively new concept in the
history of the automobile industry. Some companies have made their offer of
cars being only proactive and using electricity where as some offer hybrid
vehicles that work both on electricity and gas.
 If you want to save your hard earned money and also help contribute towards a
sustainable and healthy environment, then electric cars makes for a great way
for you to do that.

Disadvantages of Electric Vehicles?
 Recharge Points: There are some electric fuel stations still in the development
stage but not a lot of places would have electric fuel stations where you go
regularly. If you are on a long trip, you might as well get stuck where you are.
 Electricity is not Free: Electric cars consume a lot of electricity in order to get
charged properly which might result into a huge amount show in your monthly
electricity bill.
 Recharge Time is Long: Electric cars will take somewhere around 5-7 hours in
order to be fully charged; whereas on the other hand, it doesn’t even take a few
minutes to fuel your gas powered cars.

  • 2. How important is Electricity in Mechanical Engineering?  Very important. It is necessary that you know the basics of electricity if you are becoming a mechanical engineer.  Machines - If you are going to work in an industry in the manufacturing sector, you need to know how much electricity is required to run the machines and how to control it. You don’t need to know in detail how the controllers work, but you need to have a basic understanding.  Heat Transfer - Cooling of electronic appliances has a direct impact on the electricity used by the component.  Power Plant engineering - This deals with the generation of power and the various methods to generate power. If you don’t know electricity you won’t be able to link this to real life applications. 9/28/2020 2
  • 3.  Seeing the various subjects where electricity touches mechanical engineering, electricity is not directly involved but has an indirect effect.  The theory you learn in college needs to be applied to the real industry.   • 4. Importance of Electrical Engineering  Want to run a compressor? You need electricity.  Want to run a pump? You'll need electricity.  Want to start an engine? You'll need electricity to generate spark from spark plug.  Want to get relief from uncomfortable temperature in summer? Electricity is must.  Want to enjoy ice-cream, kulfi in summer? You need electricity to get refrigeration effect.  Want to run machines in industry? Electricity is must. Whether it's lathe, drilling machine, milling machine, CNC machine, broaching machine, ECM, EDM or any other machine, you'll definitely need electricity. 9/28/2020 4

  • 7.  Remember, the manufacturing of electric motor is a responsibility of electrical engineer, but then, application of that electric motor is a responsibility of mechanical engineer.  Future of automobile industry is completely depended on electricals. Because of global warming, governments are no more encouraging IC- engines(releases CO in to atmosphere). Electric Vehicles Future of the Automobile Industry?  The invention of the automobile has been nothing less than a revolutionary change.  This invention has shown a lot of positive as well as negative drawbacks than any other invention could possibly show throughout the history of the transportation industry.  Automobile industry has affected all aspects of society. From work to family, from economy to environment. Over the generations, automobiles have highly influenced the lives of people and instead of getting away with it, it has become a crucial part of every individual’s life.  As we have always heard, ’Growth is the only evidence of life’.   • 9.  The automobile industry’s quest to limit its impact on the environment and transform the landscape into a sustainable mode of transportation is at high density despite the recent economic crisis.  If Electric vehicles rules the automobile industry in the near future, then it will help the environment in a lot of ways like improving the quality of the air, lesser use of carbon in transport, motoring cost and also reduce global warming.  The electric vehicle market has seen some significant development owing to require for resolving future energy resources. 9/28/2020 9 Contd..
  • 10.  I won’t say this will completely rule the market in the near future but it is rising and becoming an integral part of the automobile industry.  Eventually, it will grow for good and will definitely mark its crucial present in the history of the automobile industry.  If electric vehicles comes into existence, it will require far less periodic maintenance and will as well require far less parts and services.  However, the amount will not be zero and there still would be non-drivetrain components of the vehicle that will still require service.  So, the servicing part of the industry will not go away entirely but there will be some downsizing in the auto repair industry. 9/28/2020 10 Contd..

Who Invented Electric Cars?  The exact date is still unknown, but what history has come up with in these years, it is believed that electric cars were invented by Scotsman Robert Anderson somewhere in between 1832 and 1839.  Although, it is still under debate and not a proven fact because somewhere around 1834 or 1835, American Thomas Davenport has also been credited as the inventor of the first electric car.  Crude beast was the first ever electric car that got made. According to sources, three other people who were part of this revolutionary invention are Professor Sibrandus Stratingh of Groningen, Holland, Christopher Becker, and Hungarian inventor Anyos Jedlik. 9/28/2020 11

Why Electric Cars are More Efficient?  Electric vehicles can produce much less emissions than burning fuel in engines of the vehicle but it totally depends on how the electricity has been generated.  Having said electric vehicles have zero emissions, the quality of the air will improve dramatically in cities where wind, solar, waves, tides or nuclear power is used to charge batteries.  One thing that brings certainty is that if even around half a million people of the country’s population are driving electric cars, we can see a dramatic fall in the consumption of oil.  On the other hand, we will see some rise in coal or gas power consumption. 9/28/2020 13

How electric vehicles will bring change in the automobile industry? 9/28/2020 14 1.Self-Driving Vehicles:  Driverless vehicles will bring a revolutionary change in the automobile industry and they will keep running out and about without the intercession of the driver in the driver’s seat. I agree it might sound impossible, but, IT IS NOT! It is now close to reality with a few automakers like Nissan and Chevrolet who have accompanied their separate models of such autos.
  • 15. 2.Artificial Intelligence(AI) Controlled Vehicles:  The infusion of artificial intelligence in automobiles is progressively getting intense and responsive and right now, for that matter, they are largely adapted to react to orders as normal as voice messages. 3.Vehicle to Vehicle Connectivity:  Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) network normally permits autos to offer data and staying in contact with each other. Vehicles can connect on various parameters concerning speed, street conditions, activity, danger and much more. Disadvantages of Electric Vehicles?  Recharge Points: There are some electric fuel stations still in the development stage but not a lot of places would have electric fuel stations where you go regularly. If you are on a long trip, you might as well get stuck where you are.  Electricity is not Free: Electric cars consume a lot of electricity in order to get charged properly which might result into a huge amount show in your monthly electricity bill.  Recharge Time is Long: Electric cars will take somewhere around 5-7 hours in order to be fully charged; whereas on the other hand, it doesn’t even take a few minutes to fuel your gas powered cars. 9/28/2020 17
