RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEPRESSION AND PAIN 5
Relationship Between Depression and Pain Among College Students in Us
Kean University
Research and Technology

Expected Results
Since correlation and regression analysis will be used to test the research hypothesis, it is expected that the results of the research will show there is a positive relationship between depression and pain among college students in the United States. From the literature reviewed, it was clear that chronic pain is a predisposing factor for depression. The results will show that a higher percentage of people who are depressed also experience pain. The results can be summarized using figure 1 below.
Figure 1: relationship between pain and depression.
The results will show that people who are in pain and depressed often turn to drugs to manage pain. Drug abuse among the depressed people is expected to high as the ability to manage stress is annihilated by pain. It is also expected that the relationship between depression and pain will be pronounced among women participants than among the male counterparts. The coefficient of correlation between pain and depression will be higher in women than in men. People experiencing chronic pain have an escalated risk of experiencing mood disorders such as depression. Another significant proportion with persistent pain suffers from clinical depression. Conversely, depression should also have the ability to increase severity of chronic pain
There are other factors such that mediate the relationship between chronic pain and depression. These include religious practices, values and beliefs. Similarly, meditation and prayer can help reduce the strength of the relationship between the two variables. This is in line with the published literature that highlights that positive psychological factors that can be used in helping people adjust to pain and optimism. Hope has been identified as one of the psychological factors that can be used in reducing pain and depression as it increases the likelihood of a person accepting the pain and suffering and hence coping positively.
Discussion:Potential Significance of the Results
Pain and depression are closely intertwined. As such, there is a positive relationship between chronic pain and depression. Just as depression can cause pain, pain can also cause depression. If not effectively managed, pain and depression can create a vicious cycle where chronic pain worsens the manifesting symptoms of depression. The depression that results also worsens the experiential pain.
Women are more vulnerable to depression because they are too emotional. Women have a lower tolerance to pain and hence become easily depressed (Amirifard et al., 2017). This explains why the coefficient of correlation between pain and depression is higher for women and men. It therefore follows that teaching women pain management skills can empower women to avoid getting depress.

Munchausen Syndrome Article Review
Introduction
The Munchausen Syndrome Article explains about the Munchausen Syndrome, which is a rare fictitious disorder which involves the frequent hospitalization together with an intentional display of signs of sickness and pathological lying. In this regards, the management needs the security history taking with collaboration with the sound clinical processes which entails organicity exclusion in addressing the psychological problems. It is worth noting that a case which is presented having unusual symptoms of same dimensions are as well discussed. The case in this regards brings the finer nuances in the assessment of the entity (Prakash., et al 2014).
Research Question
Based on the abstract of the article, it can be denoted that the research question of the article is the need to understand more on the Munchausen Syndrome as well as the symptoms and therefore the need to ensure that such issues are solved by having a sound clinical process to handle the problem. The problem for the case as well was to find out what caused the 19-year-old housewife to vomit pink substance.
Findings
The findings depict that the 19-year-old housewife was suffering from a factitious disorder, also termed as the Munchausen syndrome. The psychometry performed also showed that there is an elevation of scales of anxiety together with hysteria. Consequently, being managed in an empathetic as well as non-confrontational manner, the psychotherapy was intended to improve the positive coping abilities while at the same time improving the interpersonal relationships which had been imparted (Prakash., et al 2014).
Research Methods Used
The methods used involved observations and clinical assessments. Observations were done by checking regularly the presence of the bloodstained vomits as well as the asthenia and any forms of skin allergy. This was carried out to ensure that the patient had no issues. The observations, as well as little conversation, showed that there were no cases of psychiatric illnesses for the patient in the past. Further, the assessment entails involves the systematic examinations which were performed within the normal limit. The psychiatric evaluation was performed together with ward observations which were intended at revealing the comfortability of the patient while in the hospital (Prakash., et al 2014).

Week 3 Assignment: Case Study Selection
The discussion will be based on case study #1 that centers on clinical psychology (major depressive disorder). From the case study, Joe is a victim of severe depression, a mental disorder that has been in his family but also attributed to the harsh situations he has been in such as losing his job, divorce and losing custody of his children. Depression is a serious mental disorder that is silently consuming a significant percentage of the world. “It encompasses the mood, thoughts, and body thus interfering with the day-to-day life of the victim” (Thiele, Laireiter, & Baumann, 2012). Depression can be looked at critically from a clinical psychology perspective regarding the causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment.
Clinical psychologists attribute depressive disorder to a number of factors. Cochran and Rabinowitz (2010) explain that there is no single cause of the mental condition, but it is as a result of a combination of biochemical, genetic, psychological, and environmental factors. This is a claim that is datable in the clinical psychology field where other psychologists explain some instances of depression can be as a result of a specific factor from the list of factors provided. This aspect of depression can be applied to Joe’s case – the fact that his biological parents and two of his uncles were victims of depression proves Joe’s condition is as a result of genetic attribution of the disorder – however, “the fact that his depression only manifested after him losing his job and being divorced is evident that depression is caused by a combination of factors as explained by Cochran and Rabinowitz” (2010).
The advancement of technology in the clinical psychology field indicate that depression is a disorder of the brain. Technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) used to image the brain reveal that parts of the brain responsible for mood, sleep, thinking, behavior, and appetite function abnormally. Depression is twice as common in women than in men implying that women suffer depression and are more likely to be depressed than men. Studies indicate that the lifecycle, biological, and hormonal changes among other factors in women is associated with their higher rates of depression.
Depression can be cured in many ways including medication, herbal therapy, and psychotherapy. All the methods are effective, but the most recommended treatment method is psychotherapy that involves sessions between a depressed person and a psychotherapist for a defined period. The condition can also be managed from th ...

ENC 1101 Definition-Concept Essay
The purpose of this essay is to give you the opportunity to develop a viewpoint on a word and its representation within a particular context or situation. First, you will closely observe different representations of the word and consider several viewpoints and perspectives. After considering those various perspectives, you will develop and articulate your own unique interpretation and definition of a word, and then support your definition with explanation, description, and research.
Characteristics of the Definition Essay
A successful essay
provides an engaging introduction of the example to prepare the context for the word itself with respect to your audience
narrows the definition of the word by providing a specific thesis at the end of your introduction
makes use of description and examples through close observation in supporting paragraphs to support the thesis
includes specific details and evidence from secondary sources
creates an objective stance by the use of third-person voice
integrates quotations from secondary sources
conforms to MLA guidelines for source documentation and format.
Topic: Please define one of the below terms:
Beauty
Courage
Femininity

As you define your selected term, consider the following questions:
What is an appropriate definition of the term?
What are characteristics society often associates with the term?
Is there a characteristic you think should not be associated with the term?
How does the media (e.g., television, movies, news, social media, etc.) often portray the “term”?
Are there positive connotations of the term?
Are there any negative connotations of the term?
Is the term defined differently in other cultures?
Should society rethink the use of the term?
Is the term overused?
Are there instances in which another term should be used to articulate a point?
As you write your essay, do not try to answer all of the questions in your essay. I suggest that you consider these questions as you define your term (concept).

The course of illness can be influenced by biological, psycholog.docxrtodd643
The course of illness can be influenced by biological, psychological, and/or social factors covering a broad range of topics that include stress, coping, and behaviors that either promote health and prevent illness, or contribute to the development of clinical problems. Health and wellness are important to our daily lives and this is true even in the context of being diagnosed with a chronic illness such as diabetes mellitus. The interplay between emotions, cognitive, and behavioral/physical factors can affect all aspects of health and illness. Individual differences such as culture, ethnicity, lifestyle, religion, gender, identity development, financial status, and social support should be considered when analyzing the individual’s response to a chronic illness. Numerous research studies have investigated the impact of one or more of these factors in terms of the effect on chronic disease outcomes. These outcomes can include symptom management and/or progression of the severity of the disease.
Explanatory theories often describe factors that contribute to health problems, or interfere with prevention activities, and thus provide targets for change. One such theory is the Health Belief Model (HBM) which addresses perceptions of the health problem. These perceptions include the degree of threat in terms of susceptibility and severity, any benefits to be obtained by avoiding the perceived threat, and various internal (e.g., self-efficacy) and external (e.g., barriers to care) factors that influence the individual’s decision to act. Other theories emphasize motivations that influence a continuum of stages of behavioral change. The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of behavior change is a theory of this type. The response to chronic illness and the illness experience itself can be described by these models. In managing chronic disease, there are coping strategies and behavior changes that support optimal outcomes and therapeutic interventions can be designed for greater effectiveness by using these two models.
For your paper you will choose from the two options below. The option you choose will provide the focus and title for your paper.
Option A:
Diabetes Mellitus and the
Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change
Option B:
Diabetes Mellitus and the
Health Belief Model
To support your work, you will perform research using the Ashford University Library and/or other search methods to provide references to support your work. You must include a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources, published within the past five years relating to diabetes mellitus and to either the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change (Option A) or the Health Belief Model (Option B). The use of additional scholarly and/or peer-reviewed references is highly recommended. These may be obtained from academic, professional, or governmental agency sources. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, non-academic websites, and media outlet sites or publications are not appropriate resour.

GE2026Unit 2 AS2: Annotated Bibliography Assignment and Reference Tips
WHAT IS AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY?
An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 250-500 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraphs, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
ANNOTATIONS VS. ABSTRACTS
Abstracts are the purely descriptive summaries often found at the beginning of scholarly journal articles or in periodical indexes. Annotations are descriptive and critical; they may describe the author's point of view, authority, or clarity and appropriateness of expression.
THE PROCESS
· Creating an annotated bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectual skills: concise exposition, succinct analysis, and informed library research.
· First, locate and record citations to articles that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.
· Cite the book, article, or document using the appropriate style.
· Write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the book or article. Include one or more sentences that (a) evaluate the authority or background of the author, (b) comment on the intended audience, (c) compare or contrast this work with another you have cited, or (d) explain how this work illuminates your bibliography topic.
YOUR ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
Your annotated bibliography must include at least 10 articles. Keep in mind that the annotated bibliography will help you with your entire project and serves as the foundation of your literature review.
SAMPLE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ENTRY FOR A JOURNAL ARTICLE
The following example uses APA style (Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition, 2010) for the journal citation:
Waite, L. J., Goldschneider, F. K., & Witsberger, C. (1986). Nonfamily living and the erosion of traditional family orientations among young adults. American Sociological Review,51, 541-554.
The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living.

Description In this assignment, you will assemble the fin.docxtheodorelove43763
Description:
In this assignment, you will assemble the final draft of your Research Paper you have been working on throughout the
course. Your Research Paper Final Draft should include the elements listed below.
Elements:
The grade of your Research Paper Final Draft is largely based on your inclusion of these elements and the overall quality
of your writing. Your paper must contain the following elements.
1. Cover page and APA formatting:
You should include an APA-style cover page for your Research Paper. See the example on page 16 of The CSU
APA Guide (6th edition). Your cover page should include the following: the title of your paper, your name, and the
name of your university (Columbia Southern University). The running head should include up to 50 characters from
the title of the paper, along with a sequential page number in the upper right-hand corner.
2. Abstract:
The abstract is a 150-250 word summary of your Research Paper, and it should be written only after you have
finished writing the entire paper because how your abstract is worded largely depends on the development of your
paper. Your abstract should be accurate, self-contained, concise and specific, non-evaluative, coherent, and
readable. Your abstract may be modeled after the theoretical paper model or empirical study model. For
information or an example of an abstract, see p. 12 of The CSU APA Guide (6th edition) and p. 511 of Strategies for
Writing Successful Research Papers. Note that the abstract presented references MLA, but yours should be in
APA style. The abstract should be the second page in the paper, after the cover page, and the abstract should be
on its own page. The text of the paper itself should begin on page 3. Your abstract must meet the following
standards:
• Be 150-250 words
• Be located on the second page of your final draft
• Have a heading of Abstract that is centered at the top of the page.
H 1020, English Composition II 14
3. Introduction:
There are some pitfalls to writing an introductory paragraph, and you can avoid some of them by reading through
the Checklist: “Avoid Certain Mistakes in the Introduction” on p. 495 of Strategies for Writing Successful Research
Papers.
4. Review of literature:
The review of literature should be a smooth transition from the introduction of your paper and should present a
controlled summary of the conversation surrounding your topic.
5. Body paragraphs:
Each paragraph of the body of your Research Paper should be a cohesive unit. It should be tight, but developed. It
should serve a function, and its purpose should always be to bolster the thesis. Therefore, you should use the
following order for each paragraph in the body.
a. Topic sentence: This sentence summarizes the entire paragraph in one strong, well-written sentence,
and it directly supports the thesis statement.
b. Explanation of topic sentence (1-2 sentences):.

This project will be completed through a literature review. This will be carried out through Google Scholar, CINHAL, Ana G. Mendez Virtual Libraries, WorldCat, PubMed, Internet database. The research will be peer reviewed. A minimum 30 articles of no more than 5 years will be reviewed. I will use some keywords for my search like: Probiotic, Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia, ICU, conventional methods.
The results obtained from the study will contribute to determine if the probiotic use in prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia is more effective than the conventional method, with a more cost-effective result.
All information collected in this review will be kept in a locked dresser in the principal investigator's office for a period of 5 years. Both, the principal investigator and the mentor will have access to this material. After this time (5 years), the data will be eliminated with a paper shredder and discarded.
Project Evaluation Results
Summarize tables with all citation will be presented in appendix A&B; appendix A will be used for the summary of primary research evidence, and appendix B will be used for the summary of the systematic reviews.
Appendix A will include the citation, question or hypothesis, and theoretical foundation, research designated and sample size, key findings, recommendations or implica.

The vast majority of violent incidents come from people who interact daily with children, such as family members, peers, and partners. On the whole, the proportion of wars that harm children is not large; but in the context of armed conflicts and other humanitarian crises, domestic violence suffered by women and children will grow significantly.
Sexual violence is a serious public health problem, which can have a long or short profound impact on physical and mental health. For example, it may affect the ability to reproduce and increase fertility, increase the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, and may lead to suicide or self-mutilation. And other behaviors. During or after sexual violence, the victim's killing due to honorary murder is also part of sexual violence. Although women are the main victims of sexual violence, people of any age and gender may be harmed by sexual violence.)
Based on the 4+ academic articles identified in the "Literature Review" assignment, students will write an annotated bibliography that provides an outline of each article. An annotated bibliography provides a summary of an academic paper and relates the paper to one's own research topic.
For this assignment, you will write an annotated bibliography for
each
article you found during your literature search assignment. If any of those articles were
not
academic (i.e. published in an peer-reviewed scientific journal), you must find a replacement article that is academic.
Guidelines
Your annotated bibliography should include the following:
An introduction paragraph that tells your reader (a) your topic and focus of your research and (b) the general context of your topic.
Each annotation should include:

Experiences of wake and light therapy in patients with depression: A qualitative study.
International Journal of Mental Health Nursing
Kragh, M., Møller, D. N., Wihlborg, C. S., Martiny, K., Larsen, E. R., Videbech, P., &
Lindhardt, T. (2017). Experiences of wake and light therapy in patients with depression: A
qualitative study. International Journal Of Mental Health Nursing, 26(2), 170-180.
Summary
Researcher’s for this study designed a qualitative methodology approach. (Kragh et al.
2017) Thirteen participants diagnosed with moderate-to-severe depression were used. Individual
interviews were done by a nurse who was previously known to the patients. This particular nurse
happened to be the first author. Participants were asked to keep up with a diary, which the first
author would read and use as notes to prompt individuals for more discussion later. Interviews
would primary be done at the end of a 9-week period. These 17 individual interviews were
conducted in a familiar place to the participants. A guide was devised to propose interview
questions. Open and closed ended questions were used. Data was then recorded. (Kragh et al.
2017)
The data was collected and analyzed. (Figure 1) Several other researchers worked with
the first author in this study by analyzing the data. The other researcher’s challenged the first
author’s interpretation of the data. Together, the authors came up with an interpretation.
Qualitative content analysis was used to evaluate the data. (Kragh et al. 2017) The study
concluded that in general the participants benefited from the therapies. One main theme was
identified, and that was that participants had an overall positive encounter with the therapy and
intervention. (Kragh et al. 2017) Four sub themes were identified as well, which related to this
positivism, however also reflected certain negative aspects. (Figure 2)
Critique
Depression is a major issue that many people are dealing with today. Depression is the
world’s leading disability. (Kragh et al. 2017) While this may seem debilitating, there are many
treatments to help those with this illness. Wake therapy is a sleeping treatment where patients are
kept awake for a whole night and then the following day as well. Wake therapy is one of those
treatments that has been proven to reduce symptoms in a matter of hours. Wake therapy tends to
be paired with chronotherapeutic interventions which helps prevent depressive symptoms from
returning. (Kragh et al. 2017) This article discusses a qualitative study done over wake therapy
paired with the specific chronotherapeutic intervention, light therapy. This study is interesting to
me as an interior design major, because behavioral healthcare design is becoming more and more
popular. This is most likely an effect of the increased research that has been provided over these
subjects.
Since depression is seemin.

How To Critique A Journal Article
Sponsored by The Center for Teaching and Learning at UIS
Last Edited 4/9/2009 Page 1 of 2
So your assignment is to critique a journal article. This handout will give you a few guidelines to
follow as you go. But wait, what kind of a journal article is it: an empirical/research article, or a
review of literature? Some of the guidelines offered here will apply to critiques of all kinds of
articles, but each type of article may provoke questions that are especially pertinent to that type
and no other. Read on.
First of all, for any type of journal article your critique should include some basic information:
1. Name(s) of the author(s)
2. Title of article
3. Title of journal, volume number, date, month and page numbers
4. Statement of the problem or issue discussed
5. The author’s purpose, approach or methods, hypothesis, and major conclusions.
The bulk of your critique, however, should consist of your qualified opinion of the article.
Read the article you are to critique once to get an overview. Then read it again, critically. At this
point you may want to make some notes to yourself on your copy (not the library’s copy,
please).
The following are some questions you may want to address in your critique no matter what type
of article you are critiquing. (Use your discretion. These points don’t have to be discussed in this
order, and some may not be pertinent to your particular article.)
1. Is the title of the article appropriate and clear?
2. Is the abstract specific, representative of the article, and in the correct form?
3. Is the purpose of the article made clear in the introduction?
4. Do you find errors of fact and interpretation? (This is a good one! You won’t believe how
often authors misinterpret or misrepresent the work of others. You can check on this by looking
up for yourself the references the author cites.)
5. Is all of the discussion relevant?
6. Has the author cited the pertinent, and only the pertinent, literature? If the author has included
inconsequential references, or references that are not pertinent, suggest deleting them.
7. Have any ideas been overemphasized or underemphasized? Suggest specific revisions.
8. Should some sections of the manuscript be expanded, condensed or omitted?
9. Are the author’s statements clear? Challenge ambiguous statements. Suggest by examples how
clarity can be achieved, but do not merely substitute your style for the author’s.
10. What underlying assumptions does the author have?
11. Has the author been objective in his or her discussion of the topic?
In addition, here are some questions that are more specific to empirical/research articles. (Again,
use your discretion.)
1. Is the objective of the experiment or of the observations important for the field?
2. Are the experimental methods described adequately?
3. Are the study design and methods appropriate for the purposes of the study?
4. Have the procedures ...

Counseling Project: Conceptualization and Treatment Plan 1 Instructions
Below is the format you are to use for the Conceptualization and Treatment Plan 1paper. The paper is about 6-8 pages, notcounting title page, abstract, and references page. Current APA format is required. The entire paper should be written in 3rd person. Third person pronouns include: he, she, it; his, her, its; him, her, it; himself, herself, itself; they; them; their; themselves. Names of other people are also considered appropriate for third person use. Example: “Smith believes differently. According to his research, earlier claims on the subject are incorrect.”
Title Page
Refer to the Perdue Owl website for APA directions on formatting. Be sure you include a running head, page number, paper title (Case Conceptualization Using <place the name of your chosen theory here>), your name, and the institution name.
Abstract
Your abstract must give the reader a short overview (150–250 words) of your paper. Be sure your abstract summarizes the main ideas in your paper and what conclusions you came to. Use your current APA manual to be sure you write an effective abstract. Note that the abstract is not an introduction to the paper.
Case Conceptualization Using (place the name of your Chosen Theory here)
Cognitive Behavior Therapy is the theory.
Spend at least 2 pages explaining the theory you have chosen and answering these questions. Separate each question into its own paragraph, and use sub-headings:
· Who is/are the developer(s) of the theory?
· What did they believe about human nature and the counseling process?
· Explain any research that has been done showing the efficacy of this theory.
· What diagnoses has this theory been shown to be effective with (depression, anxiety, etc.)?
· What makes this theory appropriate for your client and their presenting problems you noted in the first paper?
· What are any potential ethical issues that may arise using this theory with your client?
· What are any potential multicultural issues that may arise using this theory with your client?
· Can this theory be used in crisis situations? Why or why not?
Interventions
First, write a short paragraph giving a quick summary of the client’s presenting issues. Please state their gender, age, and anything else you can include in a paragraph or two.
Second, based on the theory you chose above, you are to have a minimum of 3 different interventions/techniques pursuant to that theory. (NOTE: while Person-Centered Therapy does not have specific techniques, it does have 3 core conditions that are to use instead.) You must also clearly define each intervention from the other (i.e., write in 3 separate paragraphs with the name of the technique/intervention clearly shown in a level 2 heading [flush left and bold] in each paragraph, not just one long paragraph).
As you write about each intervention/technique, discuss how it helps to address ...
Anthr 1 Third Assignment Due Friday 11222019.docxfestockton
Anthr 1: Third Assignment Due: Friday 11/22/2019 by 11:00 p.m.
This assignment is worth 30 points No late papers will be accepted.
Assignment Overview
The topic for this research paper is deceptively simple: When and how did we become “human?
This assignment is a Position Paper in which you are to take a position on the topic (based on your personal understanding of the material presented in this class) and support your position by reviewing, discussing and citing reputable research sources.
A. Your first paragraph must explain your definition of what it means to be “human”, ending with a thesis statement that encapsulates your plan to support your position.
B. IMPORTANT: This assignment covers only from the past 2.5 million years ago to today.
a. DO NOT include discussion of species prior to 2.5 million years ago.
b. DO NOT include discussion of the development of bipedalism for this assignment.
C. Present and analyze the current scientific research regarding this topic.
D. Your paper must end with a clear and concise conclusion that recaps your argument and restates your thesis.
So … how do I do this?
1. Introduce and define the scope and focus of your paper in a concise thesis statement that appears at the end of your first paragraph. A thesis statement tells the reader what the paper is about.
2. Support your position as stated in your thesis. Ways to support your position include discussing physical aspects of hominin evolution over the past 2 million years (what changed, what species, what impact?), genetic aspects of hominin evolution over the past 2 million years (what derived, what species, what impact?) and/or cultural aspects of hominin development (what changed, what species, what impact: changes in stone tools, social group behaviors or interactions, symbolic representations, etc.). What is your supporting evidence for your position on when did hominins become “human” in the last 2 million years?
3. Read and refer to at least three different sources (more sources are recommended). DO NOT use Wikipedia or similar crowd-contributed websites as sources of information for this paper. Talk with the college reference librarian for help in finding appropriate research for your paper. You may use links in the class power points to research further sources for your paper (NOT the power points themselves).
4. Recap and conclude. Your conclusion must include a restatement of your thesis and clearly reference your analysis and position on this topic.
5. Submit your completed assignment by clicking on the Turn-It-In link at the bottom of the Assignment page on the course website.
IMPORTANT:

Answer to Question 1
Thesis statement: Postpartum depression has made it difficult for mothers to have a healthy relationship with their child. It has been observed that a high rate of prevalence is observed among these mothers six months after child delivery. For properly managing the postpartum depression, identification of several challenges during this period is extremely essential. Answer to Question 2
Some tips for locating sources for research papers to help classmates are in various places. I would tell them to first start with the library. If accuracy is concerned, the library has many sources that are more accurate as compared to something such as Wikipedia. Depending upon the research paper size, a number of sources can be used, but the main goal must be the use of sources, which will be very much authoritative (Ghiani et al., 2014). Now, for finding sources, which are authoritative, most of these sources are cited by other sources. Another place to check is Google Scholar. It would be much better if the trail of citations is followed to the primary sources. After finding all reputable sources, this can help in explaining the topic. It is essential to get sources, which are behind the sources for your research paper. This can be considered as an area for having a real opportunity in setting the research paper apart from other classmates. There must be at least one source per page of the research paper. Answer to Question 3
Focused knowledge provides a greater depth of knowledge as well as an understanding of any given subject (Dong et al., 2017). By possessing a working knowledge of any particular subject and along with such an increased knowledge of that particular subject through focused research, will help in arriving at a deep understanding of the subject. Focused knowledge is considered a product of smart research and it is also useful in utilizing time efficiently (Jensen, 2014). Such focused research may challenge several ideas which are preconceived and back those up or rather force the individual in altering his/ her perspective on that subject. Focused knowledge is mainly narrow and mostly restricts itself to a particular topic or subject.
This kind of knowledge can be developed by searching the sources which are the best. Anyone who is looking up any particular topic must know what he/ she is actually looking for and how that individual is going to utilize it within the research paper (Masuda et al., 2014). They must also see if the chosen source is credible or not and after checking he or she must find the first source instead of the second one. Therefore, for obtaining the best research paper possible, particular questions which are to be answered that will help in writing the research paper must be ensured.

Reflective Post

The readings and assignments throughout this course have been very important in enhancing my skills and knowledge about human resource management both in the public and private sector. Based on these readings, I was able to learn about the various legal measures that have been established to enhance the welfare of employees across the country from the actions of their employers. In addition, the readings and assignments enabled me to learn about the various approaches that are used by the employers to motivate their employees and ramp up productivity. some of the key concepts that I believe are applicable to my work experience, profession, and career plans for the future include the use of total rewards to motivate employees, the role of employment at will and other legislations, as well as the changes that have been made in employment laws to improve the working conditions for the employees.
Employee motivation has a key role in ensuring that individuals are able to achieve high standards of performance and productivity. Employers use different approaches to ensure that their employees remain fully committed and satisfied with the workplace environment. Lack of satisfaction is likely to negatively impact their performance, which in turn affects the performance of the entire organization. The various legislations that have been passed by the government such as the employment at will, aim at protecting the interests of both the employees and their employers. From the readings and assignments, I was able to learn the rights and obligations that I have as an individual as well as what I should expect from my employer. Such knowledge is important not only for my present career but also for my future career plans.
The government, through the Department of Labor (DoL) has made significant efforts to ensure that the interests of the American employees are adequately protected. At the same time, the government seeks to ensure that the employers are acting in a manner that benefits the economy while focusing on the interests of the employees. Over the years, the regulatory environment has changed, in a bid to adapt to the changes occurring in the workplace. This has ensured that effect HRM practices are adopted across the board thereby enhancing the welfare of all the employees.
One key part of the course that helped shape my perception of the role of HRM in the private sector was the Module 3 Assignments. These assignments enabled me to evaluate some of the tasks carried out by the HRM in private organizations and how they rhyme with the practices in the public sector. Based on the assignments, I was able to learn how legislation such as Employment at Will Doctrine, Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), and the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) have impacted the private sector human resource management practices.

1. Introduction
The aim of this reflective report is to develop a reflective statement concerning the previous experience, and develop a draft idea to assess self-ability in order to enhance future learning or future employability behaviours. The reflection statement is used to measure outputs and allow individuals to look back on their value (Watt et, al.,2001) Therefore, in this report I will demonstrate my university experience particularly “ Developing centre - Group work” and extracurricular activity. I will use both kinds of information to continue from the original learning context; there are two elements to consider in carrying out development areas; combining the elements from the break down experience, which suggests new insight, and finally through evaluation, the action of decision making will be made based on criteria or systematic judgement. (Bloom,1954) An experiential reflection will offer the opportunity to discuss personal context within practicum, as to do so allows an insight and perspective for professional personal growth (Monaghan et al. 2012) as the Kolb’s learning cycle (1984) will be adopted to encourage a high level of reflection approach. Furthermore, a personal development plan will be included in the appendix at the end of the report, which includes the overall competencies that I wish to work on from the past or those competencies that I am planning to work on in the future (Brown, 1995; McMullan et al., 2003; Redman, 1994; Seng and Seng, 1996; Smith and Tillema, 1998; Snadden et al., 1996).

Reflective Personal Development Paper
(25 Points)
5-to-6 page paper [double-space, APA style]
Students will write a narrative essay about your own life, describing the experiences that have shaped your views of race, culture, and issues of diversity and how your life experiences, perceptions, education, and family background have led to your current ideas about teaching and learning diverse
student populations.
By researching and studying your own family background, it is possible to gain an appreciation about ways in which we share many similarities and differences. As a brief, introductory section of this assignment, try to gather as much information as you can about your family background including
religious affiliation, ethnicity, culture, language(s), country of origin, education/occupation and any other information you think is of interest and value. Then, reflect on your own experiences in terms of your cultural reference, your family background, your interactions with others unlike yourself, and other factors determined by your own circumstances and your upbringing. Include SPECIFIC EXAMPLES OF EVENTS AND SITUATIONS
that you feel shaped your views on these issues. Be sure to situate your
examples in the context of assumptions about schooling and education.
Write a five to six page paper [double-space, APA style] recapturing your recollections and emphasizing your experiences with cultural diversity as a student in elementary, secondary, and higher education.
Some suggested questions you may want to ask yourself:
What messages did I receive growing up a
bout what it meant to be a member of my racial/
ethnic group, religious, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, etc.? How has these, or later life situations that challenged it, informed the way you interact with students or colleagues or parents, either in or out of your group?
Have you been encouraged (or forced) to think about issues like racism, sexism, heterosexism/homophobia, or classism? If so, how did those experiences shape your teaching and/or learning? If not, how has the lack of consideration of those issues informed your teaching and/or learning?
What are some of your life experiences, or dimensions of your identity, that give you a unique insight into multicultural issues?
What are some of the areas or isms with which you still struggle? What are some of your stereotypes or prejudices? How might you confront them?
Try to think deeply about parts of your identity that put you in a privileged group (whiteness for race, maleness for gender, heterosexuality for sexual orientation, uppermiddle class for socioeconomic status, etc.) and the inequities around those areas. Challenge yourself. Use this as an opportunity to
practice and model self-critique.

Data ManagementIncludes coding, cleaning, and organizing data into a usable format (preparing for analysis)
Coding – assigning labels so data can be read and understood by a computer (e.g., 1=yes, 2=no)
Cleaning – values are valid and consistent (e.g., 1=true, 2=false, there should be no 3s); Also, need to deal with missing data
Data AnalysisBegins with being able to identify the variables
Variables – a characteristic or attribute that can be measured or observed (Creswell, 2002)
Types of variables: independent (controlled or cause or exert some influence) and dependent (are outcome variables that are being studied)
Also, the level(s) of data collected are importantNominal OrdinalNumerical (interval and ratio)

GE2026Unit 2 AS2 Annotated Bibliography Assignment and Reference MatthewTennant613

Project Description
THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING
Write this the same, without question putting it like this, (with the data of us..)

A full citation of the paper in APA style

IMPORTANT:
Submit your paper as a Word doc or .docx or as .rtf or .pdf file. Canvas does not accept work submitted in .pages or as Google Docs, Google Drive shared documents or as ZIP files. I cannot grade your paper if I cannot open it!

In Lieu of Money, Toyota Donates Efficiency to New
York Charity
By MONA ELNAGGAR JULY 26, 2013
The Food Bank for New York City is the country’s largest anti-hunger
charity, feeding about 1.5 million people every year. It leans heavily, as
other charities do, on the generosity of businesses, including Target,
Bank of America, Delta Air Lines and the New York Yankees. Toyota
was also a donor. But then Toyota had a different idea.
Instead of a check, it offered kaizen.
A Japanese word meaning “continuous improvement,” kaizen is a main
ingredient in Toyota’s business model and a key to its success, the
company says. It is an effort to optimize flow and quality by constantly
searching for ways to streamline and enhance performance. Put more
simply, it is about thinking outside the box and making small changes
to generate big results.
Toyota’s emphasis on efficiency proved transformative for the Food
Bank.
At a soup kitchen in Harlem, Toyota’s engineers cut down the wait time
for dinner to 18 minutes from as long as 90. At a food pantry on Staten

9/11/2018Technology and its impact on our environment
2018 was one of the hottest years of the century. And most people claim that the use of modern technology is the reason for such climate change. However, the government spends millions and millions of money on scientists who are researching on eco-friendly technology and source of energy. James Gustave Speth, then-President of the World Resources Institute, in 1992 wrote an article suggesting a national strategy to combine the goals of a healthy environment and a strong economy. He suggests that we can reduce pollution by recycling waste. This process makes products more affordable for people to buy and use. A year after year the eco-friendly technology is becoming more affordable for people. More people are installing solar panels on the roofs of their houses which helps to reduce the use of eco-harmful sources of energy. Scientists calculated that by the end of the XXI century everyone will be using eco-friendly tech products which will reduce the harm to the environment to zero.
Technology requires energy. In the early XX century, the coal was the main source of energy. Years after the coal was changed with oil. In the 1950s scientists started using a nuclear power as a main source of energy. However, none of them are eco-friendly. They deal inevitable damage to our environment, damaging the air we breathe, the atmosphere that protects us from Sun and soil where we plant our vegetables and fruits. The changes scientists started paying attention to the damage we are dealing with the environment in the 1990s. That was the time when scientists started researching on alternative sources of energy. Marine energy, hydroelectric, wind, geothermal and solar power are first renewable and alternative sources of energy. China is one of the first countries to start using renewable energy. In 2004, “The New York Times” published an article which states that the government of China declared by 2010 10 percent of the whole of China’s power will be generated through renewable sources. Indeed, in 2018 China’s 12 percent of power is generated through renewable sources of energy and China is not going to stop on this. Now they are planning to increase that number from 10 percent to 20 by the year 2030. With renewable sources of energy comes the eco-friendly technologies. Some of the tech companies are working on so-called “greenhouses”. This houses are entirely eco-friendly and do not require energy that is harmful to the environment. The price of these houses starts at 75000$ which makes it affordable for people. Also, solar and wind farms are being built which will help to reduce the use of energy sources such as nuclear power.
Tech products are more eco-friendly then they were before. For example, phones these days come with Lithium-ion batteries which lasts for years and requires less electricity. Gas powered cars are now being replaced by electric cars which do not produce.

Mexican immigration to the United States comprises an important social issue
in contemporary public policy debate, particularly given the recent passage of
Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070 (SB 1070). The current study investigated how indi-
viduals’ sentiments toward undocumented Mexican immigrants shifted between
2006 and 2009 in Arizona, and also examined economic concomitants to these
shifts. Participants included 3,195 culturally diverse students attending a state
university in Arizona. They reported their attitudes toward undocumented Mex-
ican immigrants regarding housing, employment, values, social welfare, citizen-
ship, health care, and education issues. Results show less-positive attitudes as
each year progressed among European and Latino Americans, as well as other
ethnic minorities. Further, anti-undocumented immigrant sentiment increased as
unemployment increased and gross domestic product real growth rate decreased.
Ethnic differences emerged in the relative negativity toward undocumented immi-
grants such that European Americans were less positive towards undocumented
Mexican immigrants than Latinos over 4 years. These findings suggest that eco-
nomic dynamics may beget anti-immigrant sentiment, leading to contentious leg-
islation, such as Arizona’s recent immigration law.

Part 1: Hinduism Overview
Hinduism has no founder, but an integration of different beliefs. Its development was influenced by the nomadic Aryan Indo-European races that occupied Northern India. The religions originated from Russia and Central Asia as they attacked the Harappans residing in the area. Veda is the oldest scripture in Hindu that means wisdom and knowledge. It has hymns, prayers and ritual texts introduced during in the ancient times. The secret teachings in Hindu are known as the Upanishads, and it includes the mystical concepts of man and the universe.
Hinduism has a term known as Ramayan and is one of the significant Indian tales. Puranas is a vital source used to understand Hinduism, and it includes the legends, gods, and demons. A common feature between Hinduism and other religions is that most of its festivals fall in two classes (Doniger, 2010). There are those who celebrate saints and others celebrating notable scriptural events. Om is a symbol in Hinduism and used in meditation. The swastika is another symbol associated with a negative connotation in other parts across the world while in Hinduism, it is a sign of luck and fortune.

Similarities
Differences
Points of origin
Jainism and Hinduism came from India. Moreover, they are all knows as the traditional faiths of the Indians.
The existence of Atma
The two religions accept the reality of Atma, also known as the soul. They believe in the immortality of the soul. In the contexts of both religions, the physical body can die, but the spirit that inhabits it lives on and leads to reincarnation.
The ideas of Moska, Karma, and Reincarnation
Jainism and Hinduism both believe in Karma. Karma can refer to the good or bad. They also believe in reincarnation, the idea of life after death (Babb, 2015). Both religions also believe in moska, the liberation from the cycle of life and death. However, the meaning of these concepts is different in each religion.
Temples and Idols
The religious activities in both religions are similar. They both have temples and conduct idol worshiping. They also have times when they fast as a way of worship and purification of the soul.
The concept of Karma
In Hindu, Karma is an essence of transgression to atone for blessings to get in the next life. Jains consider Karma a kind of activity that attaches to the soul in each life. While Hindus try to do the right thing to atone for the spiritual debt, Jains follow actions intended to clean the soul of a polluting nature.
The idea of Moksha
Hindus believe that Moksha and liberation take place where the soul meets the universal soul and results to eternal life in Vishnu’s territory. The Jains considers moksha an activity-less and tranquil that is said to take place in Siddhabhumi.

REL101(WI): World Religions
Reflection Paper #2
The Problem of Evil
The most formidable challenge a believer in God must face is known as “the problem of evil.” This problem, which goes back to ancient times yet is no less distressing today, asks about the relationship between belief in God and the existence of evil in the world. If God is truly good and cares for us, why do bad things continually happen to good people? How can there be so much unmerited evil and suffering in the world if an all-powerful and all-loving creator governs the universe? Like many other faiths, Judaism has had to confront such questions head on. While much of Jewish history is full of pain and suffering, nothing has tested the Jewish faith like the mass slaughter of Jews during the Holocaust (or Shoah). Given God’s covenantal promise of a blessed existence and God’s declaration that the Jews are his “chosen people,” many wonder today how they can possibly square the extermination of 6 million such people with belief in a deity who is said to be both compassionate and just. For this second Reflection Paper, you are asked to weigh in on this conflicted debate. Before you begin to write, consider the discussion of Judaism in class, read carefully the article “The Problem of Evil” posted under “Course Materials” on Blackboard, and research at least two other articles of your choice that address this topic. Then, in your paper, expand this difficult issue to all of the Western religions and offer your best insights on the ongoing attempt to make sense of the problem of evil. If you are a believer, how do you reconcile your belief in an all-powerful, all-loving God and the immense evil that surrounds us? Which of the many solutions to the problem of evil (officially known a “theodicy”), do you find convincing? If you are not committed to a religious belief, what is your opinion about the problem of evil? Is this problem great enough to lead one to atheism, as many have argued? Is one of the counterarguments presented in this discussion particularly powerful?
The Problem of Evil
Introduction: The Great Problem
We live in a world in shadow. It’s a fact, noted by every religion and belief system throughout history, that suffering plagues the human condition. Some of us experience far more pain than others, but it’s something we must all face during our lives. Possibly even worse than the existence of suffering is the randomness with which it strikes—often in the lives of people who have done nothing to deserve it—and our too-frequent powerlessness to help the afflicted innocent.
The great and terrible fact of suffering has been humanity’s constant companion. Our history as a species is a long, slow climb up from the darkness, punctuated by much faltering, backsliding, and frustration. For thousands of years of human history, every day was a struggle to stay alive. Plagues and epidemics swept continents like wildfire. Natural disasters led to the collapse of great empires..

Week 7 Discussion
The roots of Christianity and the growth of this religion.
Please respond to the following:
Main discussion questions for the week:
We have seen/suggested that Zoroastrianism influenced Judaism. Jesus was a Jew and used the Jewish scripture when he taught. Some even say that Christianity is a sect of Judaism (see Rabbi Norman Solomon, Judaism: A Very Short Introduction). Yet, most Christians claim that their religion is unique.
· Did Zoroastrianism and/or Judaism provide the basis for Christianity or not?
· Pick a side and defend it with three (3) reasons. Explain each reason.
In our chapter we have seen numerous splits in Christianity: In the Book of Acts; the division between Roman Catholicism and the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Protestant Reformation, and on and on. Modern Christianity is sometimes characterized by the split between followers who believe in the literal interpretation of the Bible and those who believe in a figurative interpretation.
· How can one Bible, especially one New Testament, be used to justify so many divisions?
· Is one of these divisions/denomination the "right" denominations? Why?
Be sure to respond to at least one (1) (BELOW) other student.

Hi Class!
I believe that Zoroastrianism/Judaism provided a basis to Christianity. Since Zoroastrianism did exsist before Christianity, I think this is a major reason why Christianity came about. I will use the example of Hinduism and Buddhism, Buddhism originated mainly from Hinduism (since Hinduism is one of the oldesst realigions) because some people wanted to take some of the philosophies from Hinduism and create their own set of beliefs. Christianity has some of the same basics as Judaism and Zoroastrianism, but they created new philosophies and values to fit the kind of religion that they wanted.
Like the religion, there was a basis that was used to start the religion. It was influenced by many factors including religion and culture so there is going to be one bible that started it all. I think that they all use the Bible as the center stone that each new division expands and revolves on. I think that every single sect can believe that their denomination is the 'right' one, but ultimately the only right one would be the one to start it all.But they are all revolving around the same basis, so it really depends on your morals and values as to which one is the 'right' one.

Change Proposal: Reimplementation of a Bedside Shift Report
The identified clinical problem that is relevant to nurses in the workplace is the bedside shift report (BSR). The bedside shift report may be used to help the development of teamwork, ownership, and accountability thus increasing the satisfaction of the nurses. The reason for selecting the reimplementation of a bedside shift report is because; at a targeted facility the implementation of the bedside shift report is becoming poor. This has led to the poor compliance with the standards of practice, and increase costs in the facility. Also, to have a reduced cost by removing overtime pay and scrubbing off legal errors which result in legal fees (Clark et al., 2020). (*Re-phrase this sentence, avoid slang).
The reimplementation of a bedside shift report is important for the nurse practicing in the organization. Bedside shift report assists in improving the experience of the client and improving the handoff care between the nurses through including the family and client in the delivery of care. Bedside shift report is leading to the introduction of a change in the nursing culture i.e. introduction of various methods of communicating patient-specific care at a shift transformation. Shift reports given at the bedside is helping in changing the manner in which nurses are communicating and practicing (Clark et al., 2020).
At the targeted facility, the execution of the bedside shift report is poor and this is associated to the lack of knowledge concerning the role of bedside shift reporting on the patient outcome. The healthcare providers at the facility are not directly engaged in the provision of healthcare. There is poor communication of the goals of the bedside shift reporting and their importance about the positive outcomes and benefits that are involved in the change (Clark et al., 2020).
According to the study by Gregory et al., (2014), the process of assessing the transformation in practice that involves transitioning of the bedside nurse shift handoffs is important. The evaluation process is helpful in the re-implementation plan to help in improving the areas of weaknesses. The evaluation process of the success in the implementation in the practice is assessing the perception of the nurses about the proposed changes i.e. the re-implementation plans. There is evidence showing the positive impacts of the bedside shift report in the safety of the patient, the control of the pain, the satisfaction of the patients, and improvement in the nurse to patient or nurse to nurse communication (Gregory et al., 2014).

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Relationship Between Depression and Pain Among College
Students in Us
Kean University
Research and Technology
05/08/20
Expected Results
Since correlation and regression analysis will be used to test the
research hypothesis, it is expected that the results of the
research will show there is a positive relationship between
depression and pain among college students in the United
States. From the literature reviewed, it was clear that chronic
pain is a predisposing factor for depression. The results will
show that a higher percentage of people who are depressed also
experience pain. The results can be summarized using figure 1
below.
Figure 1: relationship between pain and depression.
The results will show that people who are in pain and depressed
often turn to drugs to manage pain. Drug abuse among the
depressed people is expected to high as the ability to manage
stress is annihilated by pain. It is also expected that the
relationship between depression and pain will be pronounced
among women participants than among the male counterparts.
2. The coefficient of correlation between pain and depression will
be higher in women than in men. People experiencing chronic
pain have an escalated risk of experiencing mood disorders such
as depression. Another significant proportion with persistent
pain suffers from clinical depression. Conversely, depression
should also have the ability to increase severity of chronic pain
There are other factors such that mediate the relationship
between chronic pain and depression. These include religious
practices, values and beliefs. Similarly, meditation and prayer
can help reduce the strength of the relationship between the two
variables. This is in line with the published literature that
highlights that positive psychological factors that can be used in
helping people adjust to pain and optimism. Hope has been
identified as one of the psychological factors that can be used in
reducing pain and depression as it increases the likelihood of a
person accepting the pain and suffering and hence coping
positively.
Discussion:Potential Significance of the Results
Pain and depression are closely intertwined. As such, there is a
positive relationship between chronic pain and depression. Just
as depression can cause pain, pain can also cause depression. If
not effectively managed, pain and depression can create a
vicious cycle where chronic pain worsens the manifesting
symptoms of depression. The depression that results also
worsens the experiential pain.
Women are more vulnerable to depression because they are too
emotional. Women have a lower tolerance to pain and hence
become easily depressed (Amirifard et al., 2017). This explains
why the coefficient of correlation between pain and depression
is higher for women and men. It therefore follows that teaching
women pain management skills can empower women to avoid
getting depressed. The findings of this research can be used by
psychologists to help clients manage stress better. Research has
shown that one variable is a causal factor for the other.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEPRESSION AND PAIN
AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS 1
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEPRESSION AND
PAINAMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS 2
Relationship between Depression and Pain among College
Students in US
Kean University
Research and Technology
04/26/20
Problem Statement
A higher percentage of students with depression are as well
affected by pain. It is true that depression affects a small
percentage of students with chronic pain while affecting a
higher percentage of students with depression. The objective of
the study will therefore be investigating the relationship
7. between depression and pain among the college students is US.
The study population for the research problem will be anyone
within the ages of 15-30 years. Since it is impossible to analyze
that study population in the entire country, the study population
will be refined by using a sample of the population of all the
people in that age group in Kean University. What needs to be
understood in the research problem is how the general
population has been affected by chronic pain and how it
increases the chances of developing depression (Vadivelu et al.,
2017). That will help in understanding how the complexity
between pain and physical functioning can be solved.
The research problem is specific hence appropriate to be
studied. The research problem helps in understanding the
psychological functioning of the people hence being relevant to
the major. It as well helps in understanding the behaviors of the
people and the factors that impact the changes in the behavior
(Phan et al., 2017). What is more motivating in undertaking the
research problem is to understand how the moods of the people
have been affected by problems that come as a result of pain.
Understanding the relationship between depression and pain is
an issue that affects the majority of the general population
hence it is a topic that everyone needs to have some interest in
researching on. Self-esteem is part of the key issues that need to
be studied in the research problem. Nevertheless, is there direct
relationship between depression and pain?
Literature Review
There exists a significant relationship between pain and
depression among the college students in US. Chronic pain is
considered to be having a greater risk of depression, and studies
have shown that a higher percentage of people with depression
are as well affected by pain. It is true that depression affects a
small percentage of people with chronic pain while affecting a
higher percentage of people experiencing depression (Stanculete
et al., 2017). The majority of people that meet the entire criteria
of the major depression still meet the criteria for the chronic
painful physical condition (CPPC). It is as well true that the
8. people that have reported an incidence of CPPC still have
reported different symptoms of fatigue, unlike the people that
do nor experience any form of pain.
Psychologists describe depression as a mental disorder that is
always associated with both somatic and emotional symptoms.
There is a higher probability of the people experiencing both
the physical and somatic symptoms to be as well be
experiencing a major depressive disorder. Nevertheless,
depression cannot be effectively assessed in most of the people
that have already shown any physical symptoms (Brown et al.,
2016). That develops, the more likely that such people will be
more resistance to treatment.
There are common comorbidities in the relationship between
pain and depression. Such comorbidities include a higher risk of
stress in people being affected by both depression and pain. The
relationship between pain and depression can as well be
assessed through the distortion of the sensitivity to pain.
Although the majority of the studies have already justified a
positive relationship between negative emotions and pain, it is
as well true that negative emotions can help in reducing pain
(Shim et al., 2017). The relationship between pain and emotions
can, therefore, be referred to as multidimensional. There is as
well a bidirectional relationship between pain and depression.
Neurobiological Basis of the Relationship between Depression
and Pain
Different findings have suggested that the mesolimbic system in
human beings responds to both the pleasure and pain the people
are experiencing. It is true that there is a direct relationship
between the different body organs of a human being that are
associated with the emotions and the sensory body organs that
have the responsibility of detecting both depression and pain
(Stubbs et al., 2018). Patients experiencing a form of depression
have a higher likelihood of having more emotional reactions
compared to the patients not experiencing any form of
depression. The relationship between pain and depression have
different comparable neurobiological mechanisms.
9. Neuropathic Pain
The neuropathic pain is the kind of pain that is caused to a
human being as a result of the injury that occurs to the nervous
system. The neuropathic pain is as well considered as a form of
chronic stress that shares different features with the depression
that is by stress. One of the key features shared is the
neuropathologic mechanism. That means that both the
neuropathic pain and the stress-induced depression may share
the forms of treatment. That means that the stress-induced
disorders can be regulated by ameliorating the descending
monoamine.
The relationship between pain and depression have proven to be
affecting neuropathic pain in different ways. One of the effects
is on the psychological components that have been under study
for a long period. Different suggestion argues that there are
different psychological components that affect different
perceptions that people have towards pain through impacting
their variations of how chronic pain progresses. For example,
anxiety is believed to be affecting the pain being experienced
by an individual negatively (Amirifard et al., 2017).
Additionally, optimism, which is a form of a positive
psychological outlook in human beings, has proven to be having
a positive effect on the ability of the people coping with both
depression and pain.
Dispositional optimism is the expectation of the people that
they will receive a positive outcome in different situations in
their life. The dispositional optimism can be used as a positive
predictor of health since it helps in reducing the likelihood of
people being depressed. The dispositional optimism has as well
been used as a predictor of the low emotional stress because of
the reduced pain by human beings (Boone & Kim, 2019). The
relationship between pain and depression can be used in
showing how multitargeted therapy can be used in managing
neuropathic pain. This process proves to be more effective
compared to the other therapies that have proven to be targeting
a single pathway.
10. The Opioid Use as a Factor Affecting the Relationship between
Depression and Pain
Using opioids has greatly increased as people try to manage
depression and pain. The majority of the Americans have
already adopted to using opioid analgesics nonmedically.
Although different studies have shown that the opioids can be
used on the long-term management of depression and pain, it as
well true that they can as well help in the short-term
management of depression and pain too (Phan et al., 2017).
Once the benefits of using the opioids on the patients are clear,
then they need to be used regularly to prevent their negative
effects. Such negative effects of applying the opioids on the
patients include addiction.
The majority of the patients suggest that in case the opioids
prove to be ineffective in their life, then there is a need for the
dosing to be increased. Failure to understand that majority of
the patients tend to increase their dosage instead of stopping to
use the medication may be a great challenge, especially when
trying to help the patient that is already suffering from
depression and pain (Hübscher et al., 2016). Since the majority
of the patients suffering from depression and pain are the ones
considered to be affected by the efficacy trials of opioids,
assessment on the use of opioids on such patients remains to be
an issue in the relationship between pain and depression that is
yet to be explored.
The relationship between using opioids and depression tends to
be multifactorial. Therefore, there are different modes that have
been used in explaining their relationship. Such modes base
their argument on that the patients experiencing a form of
depression tend to be affected by pain, unlike the patients that
do not have depression (Vadivelu et al., 2017). That means such
patients will need to have a higher dosage of opioids hence
increasing the possibility of the opioids that are prescribed on
them. As the severity of pain among the paints experiencing
depression increased, their need for using opioids still
increased.
11. Psychological Factors Affecting the Relationship between Pain
and Depression
Different studies have suggested the positive psychological
factors that can be used in helping people adjust to pain and
optimism. Hope has been identified as one of the psychological
factors that can be used in reducing pain and depression. Hope
is associated with reducing any form of distress that may be
caused by pain. Pain acceptance is another key psychological
factor that can be used in solving the relationship between pain
and depression (Lee & Han, 2018). Pain acceptance has been
defined as the process of participating in different activities that
are meaningful, although they may result in pain and
depression. People with higher pain acceptance have a tendency
to reduce depression.
Gender as a Factor Affecting the Relationship between Pain and
Depression
Studies have started to come up with different findings that can
be used in supporting gender differences as a phenomenon that
can be used in describing the relationship between pain and
depression. Such gender differences have been used in
describing the vulnerabilities to the diseases that may cause
pain. The women demonstrate a lower tolerance to pain because
of their possibility of being depressed easily (Amirifard et al.,
2017). Women still report a negative response to any form of
depression and pain. Gender is a key factor that can be used in
understanding the relationship between pain and depression, but
the psychological and social factors have as well grown.
The gender roles have played a great role in the relationship
between pain and depression, with the females reporting a
higher pain intensity. The expression of the relationship
between pain and depression seems to be more evident in the
female compare to the male counterparts (Amirifard et al.,
2017). Although the male can prove to be more adaptable to
both depression and pain, women prove to be more adaptable to
depression.
Research Methodology
12. Introduction
Research methodology refers to a path in which the research
shall be conducted by the researcher. Hence it shows how the
results will be obtained which are in line with the set objectives
of the research. This chapter will cover research design, the
study area, target population, data collection, data analysis and
presentation, and finally ethical consideration.
Research Design
This study the researcher will use descriptive research design to
establish the relation between depression and pain among
college students in the U.S. In descriptive research design the
characteristics of the subjects are described as they appear with
no attempts to change their behaviors (Edmonds, & Kennedy,
2016). This type of research design will be used because can
collect large amounts of rich data that is detailed analyzed for
recommendations.
The Study Area
The importance of the study area is establishing the real area
where data in the research will be collected. Thus, this a
territory specified by the researcher for data collection
(Adams,& Lawrence, 2018). The researcher will collect data
from the sampled college institutions in the U.S. The rationale
behind selecting a college will be based on whether the college
is a registered institution and offers various programmes. Also,
a college will be selected based on the availability of data.
Target Population
Population is a complete set of subjects or individuals who have
common characteristics. Thus, target population refers to a
group of individuals in which the sample will be taken for
measurement (Asiamah, Mensah, &Oteng-Abayie, 2017). In this
research the target population will be students from the colleges
in the U.S. This will include both the undergraduate and
postgraduate students in these colleges.
Data Collection
Data collection is a very important stage in every research
where the researcher needs to defines all the processes used in
13. collecting this data. To avoid errors data management methods
should be observed to gather quality data that can best achieve
the objectives of the research. Thus, data collection refers to the
process of gathering the required information to prove some
facts (Lee, 2019). The researcher intends to obtain a permit
from relevant bodies maybe pertinent to this research. The
researcher will obtain a letter of introduction from the college,
in the department which shall be used in obtaining data from the
other colleges under the study.
College student data is always accessible to authorized college
staff and perhaps their students when permitted too. Therefore,
from unauthorized people data can only be accessed through
proper channel of communication, thus, the use of the
introductory letter. However, this study shall use secondary
data, which shall include data on students reports which is
readily available from the colleges. The rationale for using
secondary data is that it gives a cost-effective in the research
budget. This data will be combined and stored well for research
analysis.
Data Analysis and Presentation
In this stage, the researcher carries out the analysis of the
collected data. Thus, data analysis is a process of examining the
collected data, scrutinizing it properly to make inference and
deductions. On the other hand, presentation refers to the process
of organizing data into tables, charts or graphs to help drive out
the statistical and logical conclusions. In this study after
collecting data, it will be organized and proper coding is done
as this the first part of the analysis. Data cleaning will also be
done to eliminate any errors that may be present in the data to
quality results.
The study uses quantitative data analysis method as the data
collected in the secondary research is aquantitative type of data.
Analysis tool that shall be used in this study will R, and
Statistical Package for Social Statistics (SPSS version 21). This
data will be analyzed using both descriptive and inferential
statistics. For descriptive statistics shall include meaning,
14. variance, standard deviations, maximum and minimum values,
while inferential statistics will include correlation and
regression analysis for testing the hypothesis.
Correlation analysis will help to quantify the extent to which
depression and pain are related. It provides the linear
relationship between these two variables and also through the
evaluation of the correlation coefficient value it will tell how
much depression as a variable change when pain does. On the
other hand, regression analysis helps in predicting the
relationship between depression and pain (Walliman,
2017).Finally, tables and graph will be used in presenting the
findings thus, giving summaries.
Ethical Consideration
Values and principles that address some questions on what is
good or bad for human affairs must be considered. Major ethical
issues in conducting research include confidentiality,
anonymity, informed consent and voluntary participation
(Pietilä et al., 2020). In this study, the researcher will ensure
the necessary limits of confidentiality of the students’ data are
achieved. Also, due steps will be taken to ensure that before the
collection of data from any college, permission is awarded.
