9/11/2018Technology and its impact on our environment
2018 was one of the hottest years of the century. And most people claim that the use of modern technology is the reason for such climate change. However, the government spends millions and millions of money on scientists who are researching on eco-friendly technology and source of energy. James Gustave Speth, then-President of the World Resources Institute, in 1992 wrote an article suggesting a national strategy to combine the goals of a healthy environment and a strong economy. He suggests that we can reduce pollution by recycling waste. This process makes products more affordable for people to buy and use. A year after year the eco-friendly technology is becoming more affordable for people. More people are installing solar panels on the roofs of their houses which helps to reduce the use of eco-harmful sources of energy. Scientists calculated that by the end of the XXI century everyone will be using eco-friendly tech products which will reduce the harm to the environment to zero.
Technology requires energy. In the early XX century, the coal was the main source of energy. Years after the coal was changed with oil. In the 1950s scientists started using a nuclear power as a main source of energy. However, none of them are eco-friendly. They deal inevitable damage to our environment, damaging the air we breathe, the atmosphere that protects us from Sun and soil where we plant our vegetables and fruits. The changes scientists started paying attention to the damage we are dealing with the environment in the 1990s. That was the time when scientists started researching on alternative sources of energy. Marine energy, hydroelectric, wind, geothermal and solar power are first renewable and alternative sources of energy. China is one of the first countries to start using renewable energy. In 2004, “The New York Times” published an article which states that the government of China declared by 2010 10 percent of the whole of China’s power will be generated through renewable sources. Indeed, in 2018 China’s 12 percent of power is generated through renewable sources of energy and China is not going to stop on this. Now they are planning to increase that number from 10 percent to 20 by the year 2030. With renewable sources of energy comes the eco-friendly technologies. Some of the tech companies are working on so-called “greenhouses”. This houses are entirely eco-friendly and do not require energy that is harmful to the environment. The price of these houses starts at 75000$ which makes it affordable for people. Also, solar and wind farms are being built which will help to reduce the use of energy sources such as nuclear power.
Tech products are more eco-friendly then they were before. For example, phones these days come with Lithium-ion batteries which lasts for years and requires less electricity. Gas powered cars are now being replaced by electric cars which do not produce.

9/11/2018Technology and its impact on our environment
2018 was one of the hottest years of the century. And most
people claim that the use of modern technology is the reason for
such climate change. However, the government spends millions
and millions of money on scientists who are researching on eco-
friendly technology and source of energy. James Gustave Speth,
then-President of the World Resources Institute, in 1992 wrote
an article suggesting a national strategy to combine the goals of
a healthy environment and a strong economy. He suggests that
we can reduce pollution by recycling waste. This process makes
products more affordable for people to buy and use. A year after
year the eco-friendly technology is becoming more affordable
for people. More people are installing solar panels on the roofs
of their houses which helps to reduce the use of eco-harmful
sources of energy. Scientists calculated that by the end of the
XXI century everyone will be using eco-friendly tech products
which will reduce the harm to the environment to zero.
Technology requires energy. In the early XX century, the coal
was the main source of energy. Years after the coal was changed
with oil. In the 1950s scientists started using a nuclear power as
a main source of energy. However, none of them are eco-
friendly. They deal inevitable damage to our environment,
damaging the air we breathe, the atmosphere that protects us
from Sun and soil where we plant our vegetables and fruits. The
changes scientists started paying attention to the damage we are
dealing with the environment in the 1990s. That was the time
when scientists started researching on alternative sources of
energy. Marine energy, hydroelectric, wind, geothermal and
solar power are first renewable and alternative sources of
energy. China is one of the first countries to start using
renewable energy. In 2004, “The New York Times” published
2. an article which states that the government of China declared by
2010 10 percent of the whole of China’s power will be
generated through renewable sources. Indeed, in 2018 China’s
12 percent of power is generated through renewable sources of
energy and China is not going to stop on this. Now they are
planning to increase that number from 10 percent to 20 by the
year 2030. With renewable sources of energy comes the eco-
friendly technologies. Some of the tech companies are working
on so-called “greenhouses”. This houses are entirely eco-
friendly and do not require energy that is harmful to the
environment. The price of these houses starts at 75000$ which
makes it affordable for people. Also, solar and wind farms are
being built which will help to reduce the use of energy sources
such as nuclear power.
Tech products are more eco-friendly then they were before. For
example, phones these days come with Lithium-ion batteries
which lasts for years and requires less electricity. Gas powered
cars are now being replaced by electric cars which do not
produce carbon dioxide. One of the most famous companies
producing electro cars is Tesla Motors. This cars only work
with electricity and comes with autopilot which will help to
decrease the number of car accidents. Scientists are working on
replacing public transports that work with gas or diesel. New
electric busses and trains not only will help with the
environmental problem but also with the free space problem in
megapolises. And some of the countries already started
replacing old trains with new solar panel installed trains. Not
only trains but also houses are being installed with solar panels
which provide with electricity the entire house. If we go like
this, by the year 2050, people will be living in fully eco-
friendly cities and megapolises.
However, there are scientists blaming modern technology on
climate change. 2018 was indeed one of the hottest years. The
problem with changing old machines with new eco-friendly ones
is that we create a lot of toxic waste. For example, our old
computers being replaced with laptops create a ton of waste that
3. cannot be recycled or tungsten bulbs being replaced with eco
bulbs create a toxic waste that can cause life-threatening issues.
Also, wind turbine farms that generate pure electricity using
only wind, scares the birds around them with their loud noise.
That might lead to starvation of some animals and
overpopulation of the other ones.
In one hand scientists saying that technology will help us to
solve the environmental issues, on the other hand, scientists
blaming the technology in the environmental issues. For me, I
think that the modern technology is the solution. If we stop
using our tech products, this will lead to even bigger problems
than the environment.

Expository Research Essay
4. Assignment Description
For this essay, you should choose a relevant and interesting
topic to write about in an expository essay. Expository essays
help to explain a topic in detail, so their main purpose is to
inform a reader about a topic. Usually, expository essays refrain
from using personal opinion and rely more on facts. These facts
may come from your own knowledge about the topic and from
careful research to find reliable information.
Ideas for your expository essay might include: describing the
role/function of superheroes in American society; delineating
how the meaning of “literally” has evolved over time;
discussing the artistic value of video games.
Your research paper MUST include the following:
· A clearly stated thesis in the introduction that articulates your
position and what you want to discuss in your paper
· Clear reasons with supporting evidence
· A synthesis of sources; do not simply summarize your source
material, but show how they are connected and respond to them
· A minimum of five credible and relevant sources
· A minimum of 900 words in MLA format, not including the
MLA Works Cited
· A Works Cited page in MLA format with corresponding in-
text citations
Purpose and Learning Objectives
Your purpose in writing this essay is to explain a relevant and
interesting topic to an educated, academic audience. You should
develop your skills in using source information in your essays
and practice writing a structured academic essay.
Your research paper should demonstrate the following learning
objectives:
· Awareness of the audience to whom you are speaking
· Ability to enter into a scholarly conversation
5. · Ability to synthesize information from various sources
· Ability to craft an exposition with different types of relevant,
credible, and detailed support
· Ability to research and identify academic sources
· Ability to summarize, paraphrase, and quote while citing
correctly in MLA to avoid plagiarism
· Ability to converse in standard, academic English
Minimum Requirements
Length: Minimum of 900 words and maximum of 1200, not
including the Works Cited page. Style: Essay needs to conform
to MLA standards, including double spacing in Times New
Roman font, and must include a Works Cited page with correct
in-text (parenthetical) citations for all quotes, paraphrases,
and/or summaries. Sources: Five (5) sources minimum.
Due Dates
Rough Draft DUE on conference date
Final Draft DUE Dec. 13th @ 11:59pm
Process of Completion
1. Choose a topic you wish to write on—it can be a definition,
exploration of a subject or theme, anything you wish you
expound on at length using research.
2. Write down everything that you know about your topic in
your notebook. What can you verify? What is common
knowledge and what needs a source to prove that it is true? Find
credible sources to prove anything that is not common
knowledge.
3. Begin preliminary research to discover more about your
topic. Do a basic Google search and read popular sources to
broaden your knowledge. Remember that dot-com and
Wikipedia are tertiary sources and not credible for citing in an
academic essay. You are just gaining more knowledge right
now.
4. Narrow your topic and formulate a working thesis. Then
6. come up with research questions to guide your research.
Remember that good research begins with questions, not beliefs.
5. Begin research using the Richland library databases
http://www.richlandcollege.edu/library/. Academic Search
Complete is the best database to begin your research. Do a web
search for credible sources to include in your essay. Use
newspapers, organizations, or government websites. Find a
minimum of three credible sources to use in your essay.
6. In your notebook, annotate the three sources you want to use
in your essay. Take careful notes over the author’s claim and
purpose. Respond in your notebook. Do you agree, disagree, or
have mixed feelings about the ideas in these sources?
7. Put together an outline to help organize your ideas.
8. Choose the sections of your sources that you want to include
in your essay. Be sure to include a variety of paraphrases,
quotes, and summaries.
9. Write your rough draft. Don’t worry about grammar now; just
put your thoughts down on paper.
10. Put your essay away for twenty-four hours before revising it
for grammar and punctuation mistakes. Visit the English Corner
for more help with revision or expanding your ideas.
11. Come to all peer reviews and turn in all drafts. Review
carefully your peers’ comments before submitting the final
essay to me.
12. Review your Safe Assign report for plagiarism BEFORE
turning in your final draft!
13. Reread your essay one last time and make any final edits or
changes before turning in your final!

Plagiarism
7. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Plagiarism includes failing to
cite a direct quote with quotation marks and an in-text citation,
borrowing someone else's work without a correct citation, bad
paraphrasing (Safe Assign will not identify a good or fair
paraphrase), purchasing a paper, having someone else write
your essay, or turning in the same paper to two different
classes. Any paper with plagiarism, even accidental (I forgot to
cite that!), will receive a zero as a final grade. The best way to
avoid plagiarism is to cite correctly. See both MLA citation
