Video Games And Its Effects
Are video games actually as evil as many make them out to be? Some recent studies show that this
may not be the case. Video games are a somewhat recently developed technology that was created
sometime around the 1950s and over time, games have become more and more sophisticated, leading
to new genres and purposes. In recent years, there have been major advances in not only how video
games are played, but also how popular they have come in our culture, becoming a part of almost
every young adult and child s daily activities. Contrary to what some people may believe, video games
are actually quite beneficial to brain development. Many studies have shown that people that play
video games have significant improvement in areas of brain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

One year my uncle bought me a game named Shadow of the Colossus. This game was completely
different from the other ones I played previously. In this game, the player starts out with the character
on a horse and his only weapon is a powerful sword, that when exposed to sunlight will lead the
player in the general direction of the next enemy. These enemies are giant, ancient creatures that roam
in various places around the world, each one having unique weaknesses and strengths. To find the
Colossus, the player had to ride across the landscape in solitude, identifying small clues that would
lead them to where the creature was hiding. Once the player arrived, they would have to evaluate the
situation and find its weaknesses. When the player decided that they were ready to attack something
unexpected always came up and made the situation even more difficult than expected resulting in
quick and accurate decision making. To me, this game is a prime example of how video games aid in
the development of the decision making process. Throughout this game players were presented with
problems that required them to think very critically in order to even finish the first battle. As the game
progresses the enemies only get harder and the solutions to the problems get harder as well. Attention
to detail in this game was very important. The more that this game was played, the more I started to
look into every possible approach and the very fine details. Games like

Popular Culture
What is popular (low) culture? Popular culture is a symbolic expression allegedly aligned with the
questionable tastes of the masses, who enjoy commercial junk circulated by the mass media, such as
soap operas, rock music, talk radio, comic books, and monster truck pulls (Campbell, 18). When
looking at the high low hierarchy it often determines the way people view culture as a whole today,
saying high culture is good taste and low culture is questionable taste. Many audiences take for
granted the world of high culture and fine art causing many young people to not know where a library
or museum is located, which promotes people to overlook important information for a paper or
research project on a certain topics. Now many tend to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This blurs the distinctions between fact and fiction, and of art and commerce. As exemplified by
Campbell, Although endurance does not necessarily denote quality, in the view of many critics better
forms of culture have more staying power (23). Democratic reasoning causes the popular media to
inhibit social audiences by promising that products will work for them. TV advertising and daytime
talk shows are two examples of undermining democratic reasoning. A lot of different audiences are
being seduced by the promise of products inhibiting social progress by transforming them into social
hypnotism. Multinational corporations are know from making large profits from media products by
distracting citizens into believing that they will see a change. Weight loss commercials are known for
seductive advertising showing toned, polished bodies on professional models which often contradict
the actual lives of human beings, who can only hope to achieve a particular look. Many people do not
have the financial means to obtain these cosmetic products seen in many local stores. So many people
are addicted to the mass produced media menus that they have lost not only the will to challenge
social inequalities but also their discriminating taste for finer fare (Campbell, 23). In relation, the
popular story of Frankenstein written in 1818 talked about abusing science and judging people on the

Pope Francis And Its Influence On The Catholic Church
as soon the Catholic Church receives a newly elected pope, it is assumed that they will take the seat of
Peter and lead the Church through the issues the world is currently facing while enacting a global
mission to combat future world problems. As each new pope comes in, they enter into the beginning
of their reign with a different worldview and insight that influences the Catholic Church as a whole
and determines the achievements that are to come out of their papacy. Since 1958, the Church has
relied on six popes to help guide the world through the rocky transition into modern life. These popes
are Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul I, Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict, and Pope
Francis. Each of these popes is responsible for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the world was in the midst of political turmoil, the Catholic Church elected Pope John Paul I
whose reign lasted only thirty three days after he suffered from a heart attack and died. He was then
replaced with Pope John Paul who became the first non Italian since 1522. Pope John Paul II focused
on the youth of the Catholic Church, knowing that they were the faith s future and thus made that the
main focus of his papal reign. Similar to Pope Francis, Pope John Paul II loved to interact with the
members of the Church and both can often be seen photographed hugging or kissing children and
those who are deemed as outcasts in society. Both popes are known to have said and, in Pope Francis
case. currently say mass close to the people. Pope Paul VI performed his masses outdoors while Pope
Francis performs them in the Vatican Guest House Chapel where he chooses to live in order to be
more connected to the people and to live simply. Both popes have made it a part of their mission to
incorporate the Churches traditions into new modern customs in order to speak directly to the world,
especially its youth. Although both popes were known for their common love to connect with the
people, they had varying opinions on certain teachings of the Church. In his encyclical, The Splendor

History Of Hotel Lodging
Hotel and lodging sector is one of the oldest parts that make up the hospitality industry. The origins of
the industry can be traced to the earliest of times known to mankind. The history of hotels is
intimately connected to that of civilizations; facilities offering guests hospitality have been in evidence
since early biblical times (Levy Bonvin, 2003, para.1). While the most ancient hotels did not have all
the modern amenities that consumers have become accustomed to receiving when frequenting the
various hotel brands and companies, the ancient hotels helped create the industry that is still growing
and evolving today.
At the start of the hotel industry, there was not of actual facilities that would resemble the hotels that
consumer is accustomed to seeing nowadays. Many of the accommodations offered to travelers where
bare bones, and the providers of the lodging were mostly concerned with providing a safe place for the
travelers to rest in between major outposts for a civilization that didn t have the modern transportation
methods. The modern ease of traveling was not afforded to the customers of that time, which meant
that the act of traveling from one city to another was very hazardous. Travelling during that time was
progressively more hazardous, which helped to spur the gradual appearance of inns across much of
Europe (Levy Bonvin, 2003, para.5). Thus, the start of the industry revolved around offering a safe
resting spot for the newfound travelers

The Term, Image Of God
Introduction: The term image of God occurs three times in the Bible. In Genesis 1:26 27 and 9:6, we
find out that man is created in the image of God. In 2 Cor. 4:4 we see the phrase used in reference to
Jesus who is the image of God. There is no exact understanding of what the phrase means, but we can
generalize. It would seem that the first two verses refer to God s character and attributes that are
reflected in people. The term cannot be a reference to a physical appearance of God since Jesus says in
John 4:24 that God is Spirit, and in Luke 24:39 Spirit does not have flesh and bones. Therefore, we
can conclude that the image of God deals with humanity s reflection of God in such things as
compassion, rationality, love, hatred, fellowship, etc. God exhibits all of these characteristics, as do
people. Example 1: A good starting point is to respect others because God said to. For example, we
read in the Bible that husbands and wives are to respect their spouse and the wife must respect her
husband Ephesians 5:33. Husbands, in the same way are considerate as you live with your wives, and
treat them with respect 1 Peter 3:7. The same principle applies to other relationships. Peter wrote that
we should show respect to everyone. You can respect your spouse, child, parent, boss or others
because of their position. Acknowledge that others have weaknesses. Everyone is imperfect. Be
careful not to let their failures erode your respect for their good qualities. Look for things

Intrusion Detection System ( Ids )
Abstract Increasing attacks and intrusion of the Internet and computer systems necessitate the need for
Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to prevent attacks. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to support
IDS. Fitness function and GA operators crossover, mutation, and population representation play an
important role in improving the performance of an IDS: high detection rate, and low false positive
rate. This paper suggests a Fitness Function using Reward Penalty technique that rewards the good
chromosome and penalizes the bad chromosome, for improved performance. We suggest that the GA
parameters be optimized for better IDS performance.
Keywords Intrusion detection; genetic algorithm; fitness function; detection rate; false positive rate.
I. INTRODUCTION
Intrusion can be defined as the actions that attempt to compromise the integrity, confidentiality, or
availability of a computer resource [1]. Intrusion Detection System is a software or device to discover
the intrusion activity. Based on detection process, IDS can be classified into two groups: Anomaly
detection, and misuse/signature detection. Anomaly detection looks for rare or unusual network
activities, while misuse/signature detection uses past well known attack patterns signature to identify
illegal activities. This paper deals with only misuse/signature detection in computer networks.
Network attack types can be categorized into the following groups:

Analyse Faulks presentation if friendships and love...
Analyse Faulks presentation of friendships and love affairs in Birdsong, showing which relationships
and love affairs had the greatest impact on your understanding of the novel.
One of the most significant relationships, if not the most, is the friendship between Jack Firebrace and
the main character, Stephen Wraysford. This is because Jack remains a constant in Stephen s war life
which contrasts with all the other relationships with the men Stephen makes as he suffered the loss of
many of them. The first time Jack and Stephen meet is also the first time the reader sees Stephen in the
war. Stephen is described as having a cold voice which contrast to how compassionate the reader has
seen him with Isabelle. This is significant as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The structure of Part 2, 4 and 6 was interesting as most of the chapters begin in Jack s point of view of
Stephen which is a narrative technique Faulks has used to show the relationship being conjured and
that the lives of these two men are bound. Jack s admiration for Stephen is further shown on page 372
where he cannot remember what his son, John s, face so he has taken to drawing Stephen instead
which also shows his importance in his life. After Michael Weir s death he and Stephen become closer,
as one relationship breaks down another solidifies as they have both lost so many people so they
gravitate towards each other. When Stephen and Jack are the only ones to survive a blast underground
Jack shows he feels guilty when he says The one supposed to get you back safe he feels he has
doomed Stephen by escorting him underground. On page 451 their relationship has come so far they
abandon the hierarchy and Jack starts to call him Stephen. This links back to Part 2 where they were
allowed to speak without deference to the officers while they were underground to help cope with how
difficult the conditions were, Stephen and Jack are just two human beings trying to survive, the side of
the war you are on doesn t matter underground when you have several hundred thousand tons of
France above your head. When Jack dies moments after they hear a rescue party Stephen feels bitterly
alone as he was powerless to stop Jack s death and now has no

What Is The Rising Action In The Cask Of Amontillado
The Cask of AMontillado by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story in which the writer used the elements of
plot to make the story interesting, and give off a variety of signals or feelings to the reader. The rising
action becomes a pile of conflict when Poe hides the nature of the main character in order to make the
final outcome of the story even more shocking. The exposition, or setting up of the story gave the
reader a creepy vibe, which the author then used to pull the entire story together. The resolution of the
story made it very clear that the narrator had absolutely no remorse for the crime he committed. These
are all key points in the story that helped the author to create an interesting piece of literature that not
only excited, but enticed

Essay on Text Talk in Students’ Formal Writing
Several decades ago, Ain t ain t a word was a favorite litany of English teachers everywhere, and they
sang it whenever that offending word cropped up in a student s speech or writing. Today, however, ain
t is a word firmly entrenched in dictionaries, nonstandard, but a word nonetheless. Now, looming on
the horizon is something which may make language arts teachers long for the days of ain t text talk.
Text talk, or text speak, is the language of abbreviations, acronyms, and emoticons people use when
communicating through short message service (SMS) on their cell phones, or when instant messaging
and emailing each other, and it is beginning to creep into students formal writing. Teachers, not just
language arts teachers, hate seeing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In talking with teens, Donna Alvermann (2007) found even those who claim they strongly dislike
writing and never write outside school write entire paragraphs while texting, and some even create
alternate identities for different chat rooms, thus engaging in creative writing. Teens prefer to text their
ideas and feelings because it is less risky than speaking them, and Alvermann suggests content area
teachers can capitalize on that.
Teaching through Texting Language is not static; it grows and develops, and, like ain t, such textisms
as LOL (laughing out loud) and BRB (be right back) may someday become acceptable English. Young
people already speak many of their text talk abbreviations. The fact of the matter is the technology that
spurred the development of this new language is here to stay, which means text talk is here to stay, and
taking a hard line on keeping it out of the classroom is a losing battle. It is a losing battle teachers don
t have to fight because they can harness the potential of text talk as a teaching tool. Kristen Hawley
Turner (2009) advocates using text talk to teach students how to consciously code switch, or switch
back and forth between informal and formal English usage. She and her graduate students developed
an enjoyable lesson they call Flip the Switch which they use to teach code switching and, in the end,

Things Fall Apart Vs Nature
The idea of man versus something in the world is not foreign to most. A lot of the time a person can
find another groaning or complaining about something going on or happening. When in true reality,
there was nothing that person could do about it. The largest opponent that man has gone, and is going,
against is nature itself. Nature can do, visually, almost anything to mankind; however, man still tries
their hardest to defy and go against nature. In Things Fall Apart, the people of Umuofia and other
places use gods and goddesses as a way to describe what nature does to them. They say the gods and
goddesses will punish for misdemeanors or reward for virtues. In all honesty the people of Umuofia
just cover up the fact that nature is in charge

House Altar with Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Three Daughters
The art of the ancient Egyptians is known for how consistent it remained for thousands of years. The
Amarna period is significant because it was a brief shift from that consistency under the Pharaoh
Amenhotep IV, (who later changed his named to Akhenaten) his Queen, Nefertiti and later,
Tutankhamen. They began worshipping the sun god Aten, which is evident in the art that was
commissioned. Instead of using strict registers, walls were cluttered with images. (Giuliano). An
example of this stylistic turn is the House Altar with Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Three Daughters.
The house altar is a piece that was carved into limestone during the Amarna period of the 18th dynasty
around 1350 BC. It would have been similar to the altars found in homes that the royal couples
subjects could worship. That altar features the royal couple and three of their daughters in a domestic
setting. Akhenaten and Nefertiti are depicted as the only ones with access to the god Aten,
characterized by a sun disk with a cobra engraved in it. The family scene is also warmer and intimate
than those that came before it, (Lorenz) which is marked by the parents holding their children lovingly

The children also appear disproportionate and are depicted as miniature compared to their parents,
which was very atypical from the traditional approach where bodies were perfectly balanced. Another
example of this type of style is the famous Nefertiti bust, which also shows the elongated head and
crown. Conversely, on a sandstone block from Theban tomb 55 of Ramose has an example of
Amenhotep IV s image in the style of his father s reign, where his features are not distorted and are
much more traditional ( Images of Amenhotep IV 89), which is in contrast to how he is depicted in the

Stormbreaker Movie Analysis
Once the world of entertainment began, there were a limited number of books that became movies. As
time progressed, more and more books were finally produced. The reason for this change is because
books have been considered old fashioned ; however, their plots are sometimes worthy of being
produced. As more books became movies, an argument ensued. Many viewers and critics have placed
reading a book and watching the movie against each other. A great way to analyze the aspects of this
argument is to dissect the movie and book, Stormbreaker by author Anthony Horowitz and director
Geoffrey Sax. Reading the book and watching the movie have many similarities such as the appeal to
the readers/viewers, the overall plot or theme, the structure, and characters; however, these two
entertainment options have many differences as well including details and time consumption. One
way that books and movies are alike includes appeasement. In the entertainment world, appeasement
is sought after by many artists, musicians, movie directors, and authors. These individuals desire to
appeal to their viewers taste. The object of appeasing is to hook your intended audience. This is very
essential in both movies and books. Both authors and movie directors focus on details that will draw a
reader or viewer in. Their attention to the particular book or movie brings satisfaction and monetary
rewards to these authors and movie directors. The overall story of Stormbreaker uses a genre that

Anglo Saxon England
4. Vikings in Anglo Saxon England Scandinavian influence The process of Christianization and Latin
influx was interrupted at the end of the eight century (787) when the Vikings (Norwegian and Dane
tribes) began their ravages over Anglo Saxon England, sacking monasteries like Lindisfarne and
Jarrow (793 794). By the ninth century, churches and monasteries in Northumbria and Mercia lay in
ruins while settlements in all parts of the country had been plundered and northern towns, such as
York in 867, captured. Anglo Saxon kingdoms were finally overturned while the Vikings established
their own kingdom in the northeast of England (the Danelaw). Under King Alfred s rule of Wessex
(871 899) and despite several conflicts, the Danish were contained in such area. In turn, the Danish
king had to convert to Christianism, although the moral fibre of the church was seriously disrupted
(Baugh (2005:79). Then Alfred s descendants, Edward the Elder (900 925) and Athelstan (925 939),
extended their authority throughout England Athelstan s triumph in 937 in Brunanburh was crucial,
which is recorded in an Old English poem with the same name. However, invasions were repeated at
the end of the tenth century along the southeast coast, led by the Norwegian and Danish kings, Olaf

Æthelred the Unready into exile in Normandy. England was hence ruled by Danish kings from 1014 to

A triple bottom line model never merely quantifies an accomplishment or rather the wellbeing of a

The Reign of Suryavarman Ii Lives
The Reign of Suryavarman II Lives As one of the seven wonders of the world, Cambodia s Angkor

The temples are all so symbolic, which helps us understand their cosmology and religious ideologies
(Freeman Jacques 47). It has also been recorded that the temple contained a statue of Vishnu, but at

effect Suryavarman and his creation of temples had on the religion and ideology in the Eastern world,

Examples Of Daisy Buchanan In The Great Gatsby
On the other hand, Daisy Buchanan, the epitome of the aristocratic social class, was born into the
glory and prosperity that people wish to achieve in their dreams, and thus represents the passion the
Old Money class lacks by never having to chase an American Dream. In comparison to Myrtle s
vitality, Daisy is deficient in her devotions to strive towards a particular dream. After marrying Tom,
the values of the Old Money aristocracy led her to believe that there was nothing else she could

The nouveau riche class as a whole is characterized by Fitzgerald as moths among the whisperings
and the stars (39) in the way that the people are drawn toward things that tend to kill them. Their
determination for upward social mobility has led them to fulfill their American Dream, but only to the
extent of established wealth. A rebellion against aristocratic social conduct leads to criticism and
intolerance from the aristocratic community, leading to an unfulfilled destiny of true social mobility.
Although some of the nouveau riche class accept this distinction from the aristocracy, Gatsby s dream
and passion is nevertheless unfaltered by their judgments. As he grew up in poverty, James Gatz s
innocence and enthusiasm in his dream of social mobility rapidly evolved into a desperate obsession
with the aristocracy. His Platonic conception of himself manifested in the ideal man of Jay Gatsby that
only exists in the mind of James Gatz. Gatsby s imagination led him to believe that his American
Dream was a promise that the rock of the world was founded securely on a fairy s wing (99). Nothing
in comparison, even the harsh and bitter burdens of reality, can ever outweigh Gatsby s strength and
passion for his American Dream. Although

Sports sponsorship makes it possible to link the aspiration and passion of a target audience to specific
sports (Arun, 2004). In general, sponsorship holds a unique position in the marketing mix because it is
effective in building brand awareness, providing differentiated marketing platforms, facilitating direct
business benefits and providing valuable networking and hospitality opportunities (ADREVIEW). The
number of companies sponsoring events has increased over the past decade.
However, it is somewhat unclear how the effectiveness of event marketing activities can be measured.

steps of extract, transform and load. During the extraction process, the data is taken from the source of
different systems within the USPS facilities. Then the transform process structures the data using rules
or tables and turns it into one consolidated warehouse format. It also combines some data with others
so it is easier to be transferred between different databases. The final process is the load with is

Barack Obama Biography
In this portion of the paper, I will be discussing the biography of Barack Obama.
Barack Hussein Obama III, an American Politician, was born in 1961 on August 4th, in Honolulu,
Hawaii. He was the first African American to serve as the President of The United States for two terms
from 2009 to 2017. Mainly raised in Hawaii, Obama spent four years in Jakarta, Indonesia and spent
one year in Washington State. At ten years old, he relocated back to Hawaii to live with his
grandparents.
In 1983, Obama graduated from Columbia University and began working as a community organizer
for low income residents from the south side of Chicago. Five years later, he enrolled in Harvard Law
School. The following summer during an internship at a Chicago Law Firm, he met Michelle
Robinson. In Law school, Obama was the first African American President of the Harvard Law
Review. Obama returned to Chicago after graduation and began practicing civil rights law, teaching
law school and establishing Get ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Four years later, Obama suffered his only political loss in a run for the U.S. House of Representatives.
However, in 2004, he ran for the U.S. Senate and gave a high profile critical speech at the Democratic
National Convention. Obama won his senate race defeating multimillionaire businessman Blair Hull
and Illinois Comptroller Daniel Hynes with 52 percent of the vote.
In 2007, the freshman senator announced he was running for President of The United States. His
leading opponent in the Democrat primaries was former first lady Hillary Clinton. Even though he
won the nomination, he had Clinton s support for the duration of his campaign. On November 6, 2008,
Obama won the general election against Republican John McCain. Delaware Senator Joe Biden, his
running mate, became vice president. On January 2009, Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of
the United States. Ten months later, he received the Nobel Peace

What Are The Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Black-Scholes...
Introduction
In 1973, Fischer Black and Myron Scholes first published the Black Scholes Model in the paper, The
Pricing of Options and Corporate Liabilities , published in the Journal of Political Economy. From this
model, the Black Scholes option pricing Model (BSM) was deduced as a means to price European
options.
The simplicity of the use of the BSM allowed traders to effectively price and trade options and
derivatives in markets all over the world. It is still widely used today, although with some
modifications, by market participants.
This paper seeks to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the Black Scholes option pricing model.

Therefore, the Black and Scholes (1973) methodology can be used for valuing convertible bonds.
However, the writer finds that the original BSM may require some modifications to value CBs. The
reason behind this is based on some of the unrealistic assumptions used by the BSM;
American Exercise Terms
The BSM offers a good framework to begin in valuing such an option. However, it must be noted that
CBs often make use of options with American terms, which the original BSM is unable to price. Han
and Wu (2003) suggest a modification of the BSM to a standard forward diffusion equation over an
infinite domain.
Dividends
The original BSM assumes that the underlying security does not pay dividends, however in reality,
many companies pay dividends on their stocks. This requires for the BSM to be adjusted by
subtracting the discounted value of the dividend from the stock price. However, overestimating or
underestimating this dividend could adversely affect the value of the option, leading to a possible
misprice on the

Oregon County Essay
Oregon County In 1819, Oregon was claimed by Russia, Spain, Great Britain, and the United States.
Later, Spain and Russia gave up their claims, which left Britain and the U.S. to agree to a joint
occupation of Oregon. Oregon was discovered during the Lewis and Clark expedition, but the route
that they took to Oregon was too dangerous. In 1824, Jedediah Smith found a better way called the
South Pass to get to Oregon. As a result, missionaries who made converts along the way traveled to
Oregon. In 1843, the missionary s reports had inspired about 1000 settlers to head to Oregon. During
the 1844 presidential campaign, Polk promised that the U.S. would annex all of Oregon County.

even more, and was determined to have California and New Mexico. These territories belonged to the
Mexicans, but when Polk tried to buy the areas, the Mexican officials wouldn t even meet him. When
the U.S. annexed Texas, tension escalated on both sides, since Texas and Mexico already couldn t
agree on a border. In April of 1846, Mexican soldiers fired on American troops, which led to Congress
declaring war on Mexico. A few months later, General Stephen Kearny and his troops marched west,
and occupied New Mexico without firing a single shot. Meanwhile, John C. Frémont and a group of
Americans jailed the Mexican commander of Northern California, General Mariano Guadalupe
Vallejo, and took over California. In Mexico, Zachary Taylor and his 6000 troops took over the
Mexican city of Monterrey. Then, they were met by General Santa Anna and his 20000 Mexican
troops. The two sides fought for two days near a ranch called Buena Vista. Finally, the U.S. captured
northern Mexico when Santa Anna and his troops retreated south. A few months later, General
Winfield Scott, nicknamed Old Fuss and Feathers , led his troops into Veracruz in southern Mexico. At
the castle of Chapultepec, the Americans met about 1000 Mexican soldiers and 100 young military
cadets that fought bravely to defend the fortress. Six cadets who chose to die rather than surrender are
still honored in Mexico as Los Niños Héroes. Mexico city was captured in

Oodgeroo Noonuccal, whom was formally known as Kath walker was an Australian poet, artist,
political activist and educator. She was also a campaigner for Aboriginal rights. However Oodgeroo
was best known for her poetry.
Subject
Look Up was written by Oodgeroo Noonuccal, at a duration of time when Indigenous Australians
were being discriminated against quite freely. This poem speaks of a fairer and brighter future for the
coming generations of Indigenous Australians. This poem was also written at the same time as when
the stolen generation period was almost over.
Theme
The theme of this poem is hope that the people of Australia including indigenous people will come
together as one. This can be seen when Oodgeroo says on the years behind you/ shall the past replace/

generations, as well as hoping for a happier and brighter future for the new generations. While sorrow

Physics and Fish Bioenergetics Essays
Welcome to the world of fish physics. Many of us understand basic fish behavior and can reach logical
conclusions about where the best place to throw a fishing line is. But when we don t think much
further than that we are missing out on some very interesting details of fish behavior. We can never
fully understand why we find some fish in one location and some fish in other locations until we
consider the concept of fish bioenergetics. Ultimately, fish behavior is a product of bioenergetics.
First, we will take a look at basic fish bioenergetics, understanding the underlying quantitative
principles. Then, we will look at some examples of how physical forces, thermodynamics, and light
characteristics are specifically related to fish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Energy expended by the fish depends on the velocity (flow) of the water and the swimming capability
of the fish. The fish must exert a force in the upstream direction that is equal to the force of the water
trying to push it downstream. When the fish goes to retrieve a prey item laterally, it will have to swim
faster than the current. Getting a little bit more complex, we can consider Holling s disc equation
(Stephens and Krebs 1986) which can apply to any foraging animal. This equation s most simplified
derivation is R = λe s/ 1 + λh where R is the rate of intake, λ is the rate of encounter with other prey
items, e is the energy gain, s is the search cost, and h is the handling time. This equation assumes that
searching for prey and handling prey are mutually exclusive activities. It also assumes that the
encounter rate will have a positive linear relationship with the time spent searching for prey. For fish,
many aspects of the physical environment can effect all of these components. There are many physical
factors that effect fish bioenergetics, such as local hydrologic characteristics in a stream or river.
However, not all of the physical factors involved are especially obvious. We will look at three
examples here. Water velocity plays an extremly important role in fish bioenergetics. It effects
components that are detrimental to fish as

How it is diagnosed
Genetic testing can be used to check blood for the genetic abnormalities known to cause PWS.
Any suspected diagnosis of PWS is usually made by a physician based on clinical symptoms.
The preferred method of testing is a methylation analysis, which detects 99% of cases.
A FISH (fluorescent in situ hybridization) test will identify those patients with PWS due to a deletion,
but it will not identify those who have PWS by UPD (uniparental disomy) or an imprinting error.
PWS can be detected before birth if the mother undergoes amniocentesis testing or chorionic villus
sampling but this testing is only recommended if the mother or father is known to have a chromosome
rearrangement, or if they already have a child with PWS.
Incidence in the population
Approximately one out of every 15,000 births.
Males and females equally effected as are all races and ethnicities.
Most common genetic cause of life threatening childhood obesity.

Philosophy And Science Of The Same Breath
The philosophers Leucippus and Democritus are constantly mentioned in the same breath. Since the
bulk of their works did not survive the middle ages, we have only fragments and the writings of their
peers and successors to tell us about their accomplishments and ideas. It is difficult to separate these
two men because they are praised or critiqued as a unit by contemporaries and followers, but their
exact relationship is unclear. Sources such as Diogenes Laertius do not link them as teacher and
student, but rather as acquaintances. However, in Metaphysics, Aristotle refers to Democritus as
Leucippus disciple , equating the two philosophers ideas of full and void (the idea of atoms and the
space in which they move). But whatever their relationship, their legacy of atomism is an important
one, and it has influenced philosophy and science down to the present day.
There is comprehensive access to primary sources on these philosophers and their ideas through both
the Perseus Digital Library and the Online Loeb Classical Library. The countless references to
Democritus in Aristotle s work are available both in original language and translation, as well as
passing references to Leucippus, Democritus, and their philosophy from authors such as Sextus,
Diogenes Laertius and others. Although these primary sources are mostly fragmented quotes or
philosophical rebuttals to Democritus and Leucippus works, they provide much needed information on
early atomist thought. The

Students Can Choose More Than One Way
Today, students can choose more than one way to attend school. The ordinary way is by attending a
traditional classroom setting which has been utilized for years. The other option is to attend school by
learning online. This relatively new way of learning is rapidly growing especially with working adults.
Both ways of schooling will allow a student to earn a degree but there are some differences between
the two.
Learning the traditional way consists of sitting in a classroom for hours on end (Bethel University,
n.d., p.4). A traditional classroom allows the student to correspond with the teacher and classmates in
person. Learning in a traditional classroom setting also means the student will have a physical text
book to transport around and possibly other materials like notebooks, pens, paper, etc. (Bethel
University, (n.d.) The traditional classroom will likely involve class participation, homework, reading
assignments, tests, and possibly a few quizzes.
An online setting allows the student to participate in the course work with more agility. You don t have
to slip into a seat at a particular time of the day or night. (Bethel University, n.d., p. 4). The student has
the ease of completing assignments in the comfort of their own home and must be disciplined to
submit the work before the deadline. It is imperative for an online student to manage their own
schedule because there isn t a set time for the student to login and participate. Online classes will

Social Security Reform
I believe our current social security system should be replaced by a mandatory private pension system.
If it is not gracefully transitioned from the way it currently is then it will unfortunately disappear
altogether in an abrupt fashion. A replacement will alleviate this issue and replace it with a viable
option that can sustain itself.
First let us get into the numbers. If we are just looking at the retirement benefit and not disability or
Medicare then our current system is barely balancing. In 2012 the total amount of income was 731.1
billion and a payout of 645.4 billion. With still more baby boomers to come this cannot be sustained.
Also, how are we to know when the next baby boom will occur? The average life expectancy when
social security was introduced in 1935 was 61.9 which is now our average retirement age. The current
life expectancy is 78.7 as of 2011. This means that someone needs to be able to save enough money
for at least 17.7 years. This adds more to our baby boomer issue. There was recently a study done by
MIT, showing the living wage rates for an individual or family. This matters as we cannot create a
program that will place someone into poverty now for a tomorrow that is not promised. This doesn t
mean we don t think about tomorrow but we need to put it in perspective. With all of this data I think
we can create a new system that is not only feasible during retirement age but also allows someone to
make a living now.
Now we need to look a bit deeper

by Robert Browning)
The Victorian Period was marked by a major increase in the English empire and its culture. With more
conquests came more colonies, and soon the empire was at the peak of its reach ang physical size.
Back in Britain, writers and poets were beginning to expand on their own terms. The form of the
dramatic monologue presented a scenario in which a single narrator told a lengthy speech to an
unknown listener. Readers have to infer who is saying what, and to whom, based on the content of the

According to a writer specializing in Victorian Era literature, Browning returned to the motives of
Pauline by ironically exposing a male speaker s inadequate attempts to mentally possess a Female
Other, suggesting that the male narrators of both Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess both seek to
dominate their female lovers (Knoepflmacher). In the former text, the speakers gains the upper hand
over Porphyria by murdering her. When Porphyria sits down and puts her lover s arm about her waist,
she is showing her own independence. Furthermore, she places his head on her shoulder, making him
have to look up to her. This symbollic action is enough to make the narrator strangle her with her own
hair and then reverse their positions. He moves Porphyria so that she is physically, and figuratively,
underneath of him. The events of Porphyria s Lover thus show a male speaker s attempt to control his
female lover. In My Last Duchess, the same is suggested by the speech of the Duke. The Duchess was
quick to smile at anything, not just her husband. This infuriated him, as it made him feel as if she did
not appreciate her. In, I gave commands; then all smiles stopped together, the narrator says that he
made his wife stopped smiling, and as a result, she sadly died (My Last Duchess, lines 45 46). The
murder of the Duchess gave the Duke a supposed

Analysis Of The Pearls On A String
Out of all the amazing things I saw in the Pearls on a String, the one that I found the most interesting
was Akbar and Abd al Rahim, from the Akabarmana (Book of Akabr, 1586 1589). It is amazing to see
how many different scenes can all occur in one piece. Overall, The Book of Akbar had multiple
outstanding pieces but the emotion in this particular page is what caught my attention. Although I did
not study the other pages as intensely as this one, it is clear to see that Abul Fazlt s technique is
spectacular throughout each and every page. This painting is historical, depicting a young Abdul
Rahim Khan I Khana being received by Akbar after his family was killed. A great story is told
throughout the entire book, although this particular image has more of an intensity to it. This page
functions as a devotional image in order to display the emotional trauma Abd al Rahim must have felt
having all that he knew dragged from under him. This occurrence after royal bloodshed subsequently
sets a mood for the piece. Some of the painting is hard to depict, due to some men appearing
respectful and embracing while others appeared with contempt. This page is taller than wide with a
beautiful background paper designs. The placement of the piece is harmonious in every way possible.
In paying attention to the placement more emphasis is put onto the central area of the painting. The
frame compliments the shape of the piece allowing it to bring your focus back after the eye wanders

The Debate Over The Legalization Of Same Sex Marriage
Within the past few decades, as society has been adapting to various cultural changes, traditional
values have come into contest with more liberal values. One of the most prevalent examples of this is
the ongoing debate over the legalization of same sex marriage within America. In the article Supreme
Court should make gay marriage a national right by the editorial staff at the Boston Globe, the
importance of the upcoming Supreme Court ruling on same sex marriage was stressed because it is a
topic that has been dodged thus far. While numerous federal circuit courts have ruled on this issue,
some in favor and some opposed, the legal dispute of whether the decision should be left up to the
state democratic process will finally be settled. Through looking at previous key rulings in the cases
Zablocki v. Redhail and Loving v. Virginia, the editorial argued in favor of same sex marriage based
on the precedence that the Supreme Court has determined marriage as a fundamental right that should
be uniform across the country and equally available for every individual. However, while the editorial
staff asserts this right of marriage as an institution through those precedent cases, they do not go far
enough to justify why the selected court cases extend to same sex marriage, why marriage is a
fundamental right, and why this issue has been so controversial in the court of law. While the editorial
included the two court cases Zablocki v. Redhail and Loving v. Virginia, it failed to

Transformation and Healing in John Paul Lederach s Book...
In When Blood and Bones Cry Out: Journeys through the soundscape of healing and reconciliation
(2010), John Paul Lederach, together with his daughter Angela Jill, study the use of metaphors from
sound to foster new pathways of conflict transformation and healing. They ask the question how do
people express and then heal from violations that so destroy the essence of innocence, decency and
life itself that the very experience penetrates beyond comprehension and words? (2010, p. 17). In the
Lederach s perspective, aural properties found in music, poetry, story telling and creative dance, with
their regard for repetition and capacity to resonate diverse sounds, offer alternative facets for conflict
transformation and broadminded dialogue. These ideas, linked with aural and sonic metaphors, give
voice and sound to societies needing to express the atrocities incurred at the hand of violence.
Together, the Lederach s propel the reader to envision another approach to social healing in settings of
protracted violence. An elemental point made throughout the book is the shift away from the linear
and sequential methods for healing transformation and reconciliation to a dynamic and circular
process. The linear method is not equipped to handle post conflict environments where the end of the
conflict does not signal the end of violence, especially for women. As Lederach Lederach point out
with their story of Sierra Leone, the disturbing reality for women is that the sexual

Operational Planning, Strategic Planning And Control
Operational Planning, Strategic Planning Control The function of planning is integral to the success of
any organization and is typically achieved through the development and communication of the
organization s mission statement, vision statement, and future goal setting. To set those goals a
manager must understand present realities and future contingencies for their organization, while
creating a vision of the organization s future (Boateng, Karikari, Akafo, 2015 p. 103). Per Satterlee
(2013), the mission statement is the crucial first step of establishing the future direction of the
organization. The vision statement explains the goals of how to achieve the mission. Policies,
procedures, and rules are written and implemented ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, it is imperative to formulate the strategy regarding exactly where the company is going
with their products and services. This portion of the process is truly organizational specific according
to their needs. Last, but not least, once all the planning has been completed, executives must oversee
its implementation to successfully live up to the mission statement. Key components of successful
implementation include clear, concise, and relevant communication, focus, and perseverance. One of
the ways to ensure effective implementation is ongoing evaluation.
Operational Planning After strategic planning, has taken place and filtered down through the
management team, operational planning takes place to execute the mission. Strategic planning
provides the vision for where the organization is heading; however, operational planning is where the
intricate details establishing mission completion is completed. Per Satterlee (2013) the operational
level, an integral part of the planning process consists of specific details to whom, what, when, and
how and includes functional areas within the organization, such as marketing, finance, and distribution
(p.69). During the operational planning phase, each section within the organization is provided with
their responsibilities for task completion. Managers conducting operational planning must factor in
issues such as budgetary concerns, policy and procedures, and team

  • 2. Video Games And Its Effects Are video games actually as evil as many make them out to be? Some recent studies show that this may not be the case. Video games are a somewhat recently developed technology that was created sometime around the 1950s and over time, games have become more and more sophisticated, leading to new genres and purposes. In recent years, there have been major advances in not only how video games are played, but also how popular they have come in our culture, becoming a part of almost every young adult and child s daily activities. Contrary to what some people may believe, video games are actually quite beneficial to brain development. Many studies have shown that people that play video games have significant improvement in areas of brain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One year my uncle bought me a game named Shadow of the Colossus. This game was completely different from the other ones I played previously. In this game, the player starts out with the character on a horse and his only weapon is a powerful sword, that when exposed to sunlight will lead the player in the general direction of the next enemy. These enemies are giant, ancient creatures that roam in various places around the world, each one having unique weaknesses and strengths. To find the Colossus, the player had to ride across the landscape in solitude, identifying small clues that would lead them to where the creature was hiding. Once the player arrived, they would have to evaluate the situation and find its weaknesses. When the player decided that they were ready to attack something unexpected always came up and made the situation even more difficult than expected resulting in quick and accurate decision making. To me, this game is a prime example of how video games aid in the development of the decision making process. Throughout this game players were presented with problems that required them to think very critically in order to even finish the first battle. As the game progresses the enemies only get harder and the solutions to the problems get harder as well. Attention to detail in this game was very important. The more that this game was played, the more I started to look into every possible approach and the very fine details. Games like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Popular Culture What is popular (low) culture? Popular culture is a symbolic expression allegedly aligned with the questionable tastes of the masses, who enjoy commercial junk circulated by the mass media, such as soap operas, rock music, talk radio, comic books, and monster truck pulls (Campbell, 18). When looking at the high low hierarchy it often determines the way people view culture as a whole today, saying high culture is good taste and low culture is questionable taste. Many audiences take for granted the world of high culture and fine art causing many young people to not know where a library or museum is located, which promotes people to overlook important information for a paper or research project on a certain topics. Now many tend to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This blurs the distinctions between fact and fiction, and of art and commerce. As exemplified by Campbell, Although endurance does not necessarily denote quality, in the view of many critics better forms of culture have more staying power (23). Democratic reasoning causes the popular media to inhibit social audiences by promising that products will work for them. TV advertising and daytime talk shows are two examples of undermining democratic reasoning. A lot of different audiences are being seduced by the promise of products inhibiting social progress by transforming them into social hypnotism. Multinational corporations are know from making large profits from media products by distracting citizens into believing that they will see a change. Weight loss commercials are known for seductive advertising showing toned, polished bodies on professional models which often contradict the actual lives of human beings, who can only hope to achieve a particular look. Many people do not have the financial means to obtain these cosmetic products seen in many local stores. So many people are addicted to the mass produced media menus that they have lost not only the will to challenge social inequalities but also their discriminating taste for finer fare (Campbell, 23). In relation, the popular story of Frankenstein written in 1818 talked about abusing science and judging people on the basis of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Pope Francis And Its Influence On The Catholic Church as soon the Catholic Church receives a newly elected pope, it is assumed that they will take the seat of Peter and lead the Church through the issues the world is currently facing while enacting a global mission to combat future world problems. As each new pope comes in, they enter into the beginning of their reign with a different worldview and insight that influences the Catholic Church as a whole and determines the achievements that are to come out of their papacy. Since 1958, the Church has relied on six popes to help guide the world through the rocky transition into modern life. These popes are Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul I, Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict, and Pope Francis. Each of these popes is responsible for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the world was in the midst of political turmoil, the Catholic Church elected Pope John Paul I whose reign lasted only thirty three days after he suffered from a heart attack and died. He was then replaced with Pope John Paul who became the first non Italian since 1522. Pope John Paul II focused on the youth of the Catholic Church, knowing that they were the faith s future and thus made that the main focus of his papal reign. Similar to Pope Francis, Pope John Paul II loved to interact with the members of the Church and both can often be seen photographed hugging or kissing children and those who are deemed as outcasts in society. Both popes are known to have said and, in Pope Francis case. currently say mass close to the people. Pope Paul VI performed his masses outdoors while Pope Francis performs them in the Vatican Guest House Chapel where he chooses to live in order to be more connected to the people and to live simply. Both popes have made it a part of their mission to incorporate the Churches traditions into new modern customs in order to speak directly to the world, especially its youth. Although both popes were known for their common love to connect with the people, they had varying opinions on certain teachings of the Church. • 5. History Of Hotel Lodging Hotel and lodging sector is one of the oldest parts that make up the hospitality industry. The origins of the industry can be traced to the earliest of times known to mankind. The history of hotels is intimately connected to that of civilizations; facilities offering guests hospitality have been in evidence since early biblical times (Levy Bonvin, 2003, para.1). While the most ancient hotels did not have all the modern amenities that consumers have become accustomed to receiving when frequenting the various hotel brands and companies, the ancient hotels helped create the industry that is still growing and evolving today. At the start of the hotel industry, there was not of actual facilities that would resemble the hotels that consumer is accustomed to seeing nowadays. Many of the accommodations offered to travelers where bare bones, and the providers of the lodging were mostly concerned with providing a safe place for the travelers to rest in between major outposts for a civilization that didn t have the modern transportation methods. The modern ease of traveling was not afforded to the customers of that time, which meant that the act of traveling from one city to another was very hazardous. Travelling during that time was progressively more hazardous, which helped to spur the gradual appearance of inns across much of Europe (Levy Bonvin, 2003, para.5). Thus, the start of the industry revolved around offering a safe resting spot for the newfound travelers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Term, Image Of God Introduction: The term image of God occurs three times in the Bible. In Genesis 1:26 27 and 9:6, we find out that man is created in the image of God. In 2 Cor. 4:4 we see the phrase used in reference to Jesus who is the image of God. There is no exact understanding of what the phrase means, but we can generalize. It would seem that the first two verses refer to God s character and attributes that are reflected in people. The term cannot be a reference to a physical appearance of God since Jesus says in John 4:24 that God is Spirit, and in Luke 24:39 Spirit does not have flesh and bones. Therefore, we can conclude that the image of God deals with humanity s reflection of God in such things as compassion, rationality, love, hatred, fellowship, etc. God exhibits all of these characteristics, as do people. Example 1: A good starting point is to respect others because God said to. For example, we read in the Bible that husbands and wives are to respect their spouse and the wife must respect her husband Ephesians 5:33. Husbands, in the same way are considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect 1 Peter 3:7. The same principle applies to other relationships. Peter wrote that we should show respect to everyone. You can respect your spouse, child, parent, boss or others because of their position. Acknowledge that others have weaknesses. Everyone is imperfect. Be careful not to let their failures erode your respect for their good qualities. Look for things ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Intrusion Detection System ( Ids ) Abstract Increasing attacks and intrusion of the Internet and computer systems necessitate the need for Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to prevent attacks. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to support IDS. Fitness function and GA operators crossover, mutation, and population representation play an important role in improving the performance of an IDS: high detection rate, and low false positive rate. This paper suggests a Fitness Function using Reward Penalty technique that rewards the good chromosome and penalizes the bad chromosome, for improved performance. We suggest that the GA parameters be optimized for better IDS performance. Keywords Intrusion detection; genetic algorithm; fitness function; detection rate; false positive rate. I. INTRODUCTION Intrusion can be defined as the actions that attempt to compromise the integrity, confidentiality, or availability of a computer resource [1]. Intrusion Detection System is a software or device to discover the intrusion activity. Based on detection process, IDS can be classified into two groups: Anomaly detection, and misuse/signature detection. Anomaly detection looks for rare or unusual network activities, while misuse/signature detection uses past well known attack patterns signature to identify illegal activities. This paper deals with only misuse/signature detection in computer networks. Network attack types can be categorized into the following groups: Denial of Service Attack (DoS): A DoS attack makes the computer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analyse Faulks presentation of friendships and love affairs in Birdsong, showing which relationships and love affairs had the greatest impact on your understanding of the novel. One of the most significant relationships, if not the most, is the friendship between Jack Firebrace and the main character, Stephen Wraysford. This is because Jack remains a constant in Stephen s war life which contrasts with all the other relationships with the men Stephen makes as he suffered the loss of many of them. After Michael Weir s death he and Stephen become closer, as one relationship breaks down another solidifies as they have both lost so many people so they gravitate towards each other. What Is The Rising Action In The Cask Of Amontillado The Cask of AMontillado by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story in which the writer used the elements of plot to make the story interesting, and give off a variety of signals or feelings to the reader. The rising action becomes a pile of conflict when Poe hides the nature of the main character in order to make the final outcome of the story even more shocking. The exposition, or setting up of the story gave the reader a creepy vibe, which the author then used to pull the entire story together. The resolution of the story made it very clear that the narrator had absolutely no remorse for the crime he committed. • 11. Essay on Text Talk in Students’ Formal Writing Several decades ago, Ain t ain t a word was a favorite litany of English teachers everywhere, and they sang it whenever that offending word cropped up in a student s speech or writing. Today, however, ain t is a word firmly entrenched in dictionaries, nonstandard, but a word nonetheless. Now, looming on the horizon is something which may make language arts teachers long for the days of ain t text talk. Text talk, or text speak, is the language of abbreviations, acronyms, and emoticons people use when communicating through short message service (SMS) on their cell phones, or when instant messaging and emailing each other, and it is beginning to creep into students formal writing. In talking with teens, Donna Alvermann (2007) found even those who claim they strongly dislike writing and never write outside school write entire paragraphs while texting, and some even create alternate identities for different chat rooms, thus engaging in creative writing. Teaching through Texting Language is not static; it grows and develops, and, like ain t, such textisms as LOL (laughing out loud) and BRB (be right back) may someday become acceptable English. Young people already speak many of their text talk abbreviations. The fact of the matter is the technology that spurred the development of this new language is here to stay, which means text talk is here to stay, and taking a hard line on keeping it out of the classroom is a losing battle. It is a losing battle teachers don t have to fight because they can harness the potential of text talk as a teaching tool. Kristen Hawley Turner (2009) advocates using text talk to teach students how to consciously code switch, or switch back and forth between informal and formal English usage. House Altar With Akhenaten, Nefertiti And Three Daughters Sarah Gordon Mrs. Jennifer Awes Freeman Art History 1 20 September 2014 House Altar with Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Three Daughters The art of the ancient Egyptians is known for how consistent it remained for thousands of years. The Amarna period is significant because it was a brief shift from that consistency under the Pharaoh Amenhotep IV, (who later changed his named to Akhenaten) his Queen, Nefertiti and later, Tutankhamen. They began worshipping the sun god Aten, which is evident in the art that was commissioned. Instead of using strict registers, walls were cluttered with images. (Giuliano). An example of this stylistic turn is the House Altar with Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Three Daughters. The house altar is a piece that was carved into limestone during the Amarna period of the 18th dynasty around 1350 BC. It would have been similar to the altars found in homes that the royal couples subjects could worship. That altar features the royal couple and three of their daughters in a domestic setting. Akhenaten and Nefertiti are depicted as the only ones with access to the god Aten, characterized by a sun disk with a cobra engraved in it. The reason for this change is because books have been considered old fashioned ; however, their plots are sometimes worthy of being produced. As more books became movies, an argument ensued. Many viewers and critics have placed reading a book and watching the movie against each other. A great way to analyze the aspects of this argument is to dissect the movie and book, Stormbreaker by author Anthony Horowitz and director Geoffrey Sax. Reading the book and watching the movie have many similarities such as the appeal to the readers/viewers, the overall plot or theme, the structure, and characters; however, these two entertainment options have many differences as well including details and time consumption. One way that books and movies are alike includes appeasement. In the entertainment world, appeasement is sought after by many artists, musicians, movie directors, and authors. These individuals desire to appeal to their viewers taste. The object of appeasing is to hook your intended audience. This is very essential in both movies and books. Vikings in Anglo Saxon England Scandinavian influence The process of Christianization and Latin influx was interrupted at the end of the eight century (787) when the Vikings (Norwegian and Dane tribes) began their ravages over Anglo Saxon England, sacking monasteries like Lindisfarne and Jarrow (793 794). By the ninth century, churches and monasteries in Northumbria and Mercia lay in ruins while settlements in all parts of the country had been plundered and northern towns, such as York in 867, captured. Anglo Saxon kingdoms were finally overturned while the Vikings established their own kingdom in the northeast of England (the Danelaw). Under King Alfred s rule of Wessex (871 899) and despite several conflicts, the Danish were contained in such area. In turn, the Danish king had to convert to Christianism, although the moral fibre of the church was seriously disrupted (Baugh (2005:79). Many of us understand basic fish behavior and can reach logical conclusions about where the best place to throw a fishing line is. But when we don t think much further than that we are missing out on some very interesting details of fish behavior. We can never fully understand why we find some fish in one location and some fish in other locations until we consider the concept of fish bioenergetics. Ultimately, fish behavior is a product of bioenergetics. First, we will take a look at basic fish bioenergetics, understanding the underlying quantitative principles. Then, we will look at some examples of how physical forces, thermodynamics, and light characteristics are specifically related to fish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Energy expended by the fish depends on the velocity (flow) of the water and the swimming capability of the fish. The fish must exert a force in the upstream direction that is equal to the force of the water trying to push it downstream. When the fish goes to retrieve a prey item laterally, it will have to swim faster than the current. Getting a little bit more complex, we can consider Holling s disc equation (Stephens and Krebs 1986) which can apply to any foraging animal. This equation s most simplified derivation is R = λe s/ 1 + λh where R is the rate of intake, λ is the rate of encounter with other prey items, e is the energy gain, s is the search cost, and h is the handling time. This equation assumes that searching for prey and handling prey are mutually exclusive activities. It also assumes that the encounter rate will have a positive linear relationship with the time spent searching for prey. For fish, many aspects of the physical environment can effect all of these components. There are many physical factors that effect fish bioenergetics, such as local hydrologic characteristics in a stream or river. However, not all of the physical factors involved are especially obvious. We will look at three examples here. Water velocity plays an extremly important role in fish bioenergetics. • 30. Philosophy And Science Of The Same Breath The philosophers Leucippus and Democritus are constantly mentioned in the same breath. Since the bulk of their works did not survive the middle ages, we have only fragments and the writings of their peers and successors to tell us about their accomplishments and ideas. It is difficult to separate these two men because they are praised or critiqued as a unit by contemporaries and followers, but their exact relationship is unclear. Sources such as Diogenes Laertius do not link them as teacher and student, but rather as acquaintances. However, in Metaphysics, Aristotle refers to Democritus as Leucippus disciple , equating the two philosophers ideas of full and void (the idea of atoms and the space in which they move). But whatever their relationship, their legacy of atomism is an important one, and it has influenced philosophy and science down to the present day. There is comprehensive access to primary sources on these philosophers and their ideas through both the Perseus Digital Library and the Online Loeb Classical Library. The countless references to Democritus in Aristotle s work are available both in original language and translation, as well as passing references to Leucippus, Democritus, and their philosophy from authors such as Sextus, Diogenes Laertius and others. Although these primary sources are mostly fragmented quotes or philosophical rebuttals to Democritus and Leucippus works, they provide much needed information on early atomist thought. The ... • 31. Students Can Choose More Than One Way Today, students can choose more than one way to attend school. The ordinary way is by attending a traditional classroom setting which has been utilized for years. The other option is to attend school by learning online. This relatively new way of learning is rapidly growing especially with working adults. Both ways of schooling will allow a student to earn a degree but there are some differences between the two. Learning the traditional way consists of sitting in a classroom for hours on end (Bethel University, n.d., p.4). A traditional classroom allows the student to correspond with the teacher and classmates in person. Learning in a traditional classroom setting also means the student will have a physical text book to transport around and possibly other materials like notebooks, pens, paper, etc. (Bethel University, (n.d.) The traditional classroom will likely involve class participation, homework, reading assignments, tests, and possibly a few quizzes. An online setting allows the student to participate in the course work with more agility. You don t have to slip into a seat at a particular time of the day or night. (Bethel University, n.d., p. 4). The student has the ease of completing assignments in the comfort of their own home and must be disciplined to submit the work before the deadline. It is imperative for an online student to manage their own schedule because there isn t a set time for the student to login and participate. Online classes will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Social Security Reform I believe our current social security system should be replaced by a mandatory private pension system. If it is not gracefully transitioned from the way it currently is then it will unfortunately disappear altogether in an abrupt fashion. A replacement will alleviate this issue and replace it with a viable option that can sustain itself. First let us get into the numbers. If we are just looking at the retirement benefit and not disability or Medicare then our current system is barely balancing. In 2012 the total amount of income was 731.1 billion and a payout of 645.4 billion. With still more baby boomers to come this cannot be sustained. Also, how are we to know when the next baby boom will occur? The average life expectancy when social security was introduced in 1935 was 61.9 which is now our average retirement age. The current life expectancy is 78.7 as of 2011. This means that someone needs to be able to save enough money for at least 17.7 years. This adds more to our baby boomer issue. There was recently a study done by MIT, showing the living wage rates for an individual or family. This matters as we cannot create a program that will place someone into poverty now for a tomorrow that is not promised. This doesn t mean we don t think about tomorrow but we need to put it in perspective. With all of this data I think we can create a new system that is not only feasible during retirement age but also allows someone to make a living now. Now we need to look a bit deeper ... Porphyria s Packet Next Week s Packet is Due on the Same Day as the AP Chemistry Test so I m Gonna Turn that Sucker in Late (A discussion of the similarities and differences between Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess both by Robert Browning) The Victorian Period was marked by a major increase in the English empire and its culture. With more conquests came more colonies, and soon the empire was at the peak of its reach ang physical size. Back in Britain, writers and poets were beginning to expand on their own terms. The form of the dramatic monologue presented a scenario in which a single narrator told a lengthy speech to an unknown listener. Readers have to infer who is saying what, and to whom, based on the content of the poetic monologue. Poet Laureate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to a writer specializing in Victorian Era literature, Browning returned to the motives of Pauline by ironically exposing a male speaker s inadequate attempts to mentally possess a Female Other, suggesting that the male narrators of both Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess both seek to dominate their female lovers (Knoepflmacher). In the former text, the speakers gains the upper hand over Porphyria by murdering her. When Porphyria sits down and puts her lover s arm about her waist, she is showing her own independence. Furthermore, she places his head on her shoulder, making him have to look up to her. This symbollic action is enough to make the narrator strangle her with her own hair and then reverse their positions. He moves Porphyria so that she is physically, and figuratively, underneath of him. The events of Porphyria s Lover thus show a male speaker s attempt to control his female lover. In My Last Duchess, the same is suggested by the speech of the Duke. The Duchess was quick to smile at anything, not just her husband. This infuriated him, as it made him feel as if she did not appreciate her. In, I gave commands; then all smiles stopped together, the narrator says that he made his wife stopped smiling, and as a result, she sadly died (My Last Duchess, lines 45 46). • 35. Analysis Of The Pearls On A String Out of all the amazing things I saw in the Pearls on a String, the one that I found the most interesting was Akbar and Abd al Rahim, from the Akabarmana (Book of Akabr, 1586 1589). It is amazing to see how many different scenes can all occur in one piece. Overall, The Book of Akbar had multiple outstanding pieces but the emotion in this particular page is what caught my attention. Although I did not study the other pages as intensely as this one, it is clear to see that Abul Fazlt s technique is spectacular throughout each and every page. This painting is historical, depicting a young Abdul Rahim Khan I Khana being received by Akbar after his family was killed. A great story is told throughout the entire book, although this particular image has more of an intensity to it. This page functions as a devotional image in order to display the emotional trauma Abd al Rahim must have felt having all that he knew dragged from under him. This occurrence after royal bloodshed subsequently sets a mood for the piece. Some of the painting is hard to depict, due to some men appearing respectful and embracing while others appeared with contempt. This page is taller than wide with a beautiful background paper designs. The placement of the piece is harmonious in every way possible. In paying attention to the placement more emphasis is put onto the central area of the painting. The frame compliments the shape of the piece allowing it to bring your focus back after the eye wanders around ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Debate Over The Legalization Of Same Sex Marriage Within the past few decades, as society has been adapting to various cultural changes, traditional values have come into contest with more liberal values. One of the most prevalent examples of this is the ongoing debate over the legalization of same sex marriage within America. In the article Supreme Court should make gay marriage a national right by the editorial staff at the Boston Globe, the importance of the upcoming Supreme Court ruling on same sex marriage was stressed because it is a topic that has been dodged thus far. While numerous federal circuit courts have ruled on this issue, some in favor and some opposed, the legal dispute of whether the decision should be left up to the state democratic process will finally be settled. Through looking at previous key rulings in the cases Zablocki v. Redhail and Loving v. Virginia, the editorial argued in favor of same sex marriage based on the precedence that the Supreme Court has determined marriage as a fundamental right that should be uniform across the country and equally available for every individual. However, while the editorial staff asserts this right of marriage as an institution through those precedent cases, they do not go far enough to justify why the selected court cases extend to same sex marriage, why marriage is a fundamental right, and why this issue has been so controversial in the court of law. While the editorial included the two court cases Zablocki v. Redhail and Loving v. Virginia, it failed to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Transformation and Healing in John Paul Lederach s Book... In When Blood and Bones Cry Out: Journeys through the soundscape of healing and reconciliation (2010), John Paul Lederach, together with his daughter Angela Jill, study the use of metaphors from sound to foster new pathways of conflict transformation and healing. They ask the question how do people express and then heal from violations that so destroy the essence of innocence, decency and life itself that the very experience penetrates beyond comprehension and words? (2010, p. 17). In the Lederach s perspective, aural properties found in music, poetry, story telling and creative dance, with their regard for repetition and capacity to resonate diverse sounds, offer alternative facets for conflict transformation and broadminded dialogue. These ideas, linked with aural and sonic metaphors, give voice and sound to societies needing to express the atrocities incurred at the hand of violence. Together, the Lederach s propel the reader to envision another approach to social healing in settings of protracted violence. An elemental point made throughout the book is the shift away from the linear and sequential methods for healing transformation and reconciliation to a dynamic and circular process. The linear method is not equipped to handle post conflict environments where the end of the conflict does not signal the end of violence, especially for women. As Lederach Lederach point out with their story of Sierra Leone, the disturbing reality for women is that the sexual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Operational Planning, Strategic Planning And Control Operational Planning, Strategic Planning Control The function of planning is integral to the success of any organization and is typically achieved through the development and communication of the organization s mission statement, vision statement, and future goal setting.
