Reflection Journal Week Three
ResearchPart Two
I continued to research some moreinformation to prepare beforethe pre-
production. I am still researching about melodrama and slapstick. I found one
new area of research about melodrama, an actress called Marie Dressler and
she has influenced me with her physicalacting becauseshe has an excellent
wilder melodramatic flair. Sheworked with Charlie Chaplin only once in a
movie about romantic comedy. She has slapstick too. I realised that she has
influenced me and I should put her in my influence project. I will be taking a
part as an actor so I want to learn from her.
I have been thinking about comparing two groups of actors: Deaf friends or
performing arts students because I really wantto have a perfect and
understandableacting for it to be melodramatic and slapstick. But, I will be
asking both groups if they are available to act in my film soon. But, I’m still
nervous to ask someperforming arts students because they are hearing which
I ‘m nervous aboutcommunicating with them. I can’tbring my interpreter
because I will be filming in the Easter holiday which means we will be outside
of college. I will be working out how to communication with hearing people
during the rehearsals and filming. Also, I know my Deaf friends will refuse to
kiss each other, when they are acting because they don’tlike kissing each
other in real life, also someof them have relationships. Also, I know they will
be rubbish at acting but they havegood comedian body language and timing
because this is part of BSL. I will give them lots of rehearsaltime.
I asked one of my friends called Megan, who went to university and studied
performing arts. We havediscussed kissing when they play roles on stageand
film. She told me you must havea discussion with someactors about accepting
or not to kiss in the role. She also told me mostactors accept that it is easier to
hold hands and hug because that is normal to them. I agreed with her because
kissing on the lips is a sexual action and I mustrespect my actor’s decision.
After I researched slapstick, I researched how to avoid injury from a stunts and
I think that is a good idea because I don’twant my actors and myself getting
hurt fromslapstick. I was struggling to research how to avoid injury from
slapstick comedy because there is not enough information and it’s difficult to
find the right information. I tried to research on YouTube but there were lots
of nonsensevideos which didn’t explain whatI was looking for. For example, I
wanted to know how to use safety nets and mattresses. But, really, I don’t
know how to protect from comedy stunts because there isn’tany information
which is frustrating. I tried to move on and found somedifferent information
so I can explain with somescreenshots from YouTube.
Now, I am happy with my research projectbecauseI have lots of information
and research. That was much better than my horror film research because
there was some messy information which I made up. But now I have plenty of
information from books, discussions, websites and surveys, so I don’tneed to
make up becauseI want to get real answers from websites and books.
