Jack Bevens conducted surveys to gather ideas for his comedy film. He received answers about embarrassing situations and slapstick comedy that gave him ideas for scenes involving characters failing in amusing ways while trying to impress each other, such as one character slamming their head on a table. Bevens researched melodramatic acting styles seen in films like Young Frankenstein to incorporate exaggerated facial expressions and body language into his characters. He also looked at slapstick scenes from Charlie Chaplin films for physical comedy ideas. Bevens will focus on rehearsing with his actors to skillfully incorporate melodrama, physical comedy, and protecting against real injuries into his film.

• I had 19 answers each four questions from my audience and I collected four questions for my main research to make
my comedy film.
• I read two questions talked about embarrassing impress each other. Some of my audience had hilarious embarrassing
impress and some of my audience had make-up false embarrassing impress. My audience had some good answers to
something really funny each other. One answer make me huge laugh because a person was failing by slammed head
really hard at glass table and it’s smashing. That is really slapstick style and I think that might be good idea to use in my
film.
• I read some answers from the question about slapstick movie. Most of my audience answers about jokes and I will use
some jokes in my film like my characters couples make look ridiculous and funny. I researched another answers and
they talked about funny visuals which means use by body language and facial expression. I will use it for my characters
become melodrama and slapstick to make look more visual comedy.
• I have some excellent answers from my audience talk about end result get injury. That is perfect what I looking for
because I want my characters will showing off each other then suddenly end up get injury by failing impress. That is
style of comedy romantic and can make my audience get easier laugh.
• Survey Monkey is good idea for me to research because my audience answers which is help me more idea to create my
scene and characters much more funny.
• Some of my audience don’t have any experience relationships or crushes because I was send my questions to my
classmates only which is very small community. Next time, when I will creating new film and I will send my questions to
whole country because I want to get more answers from my audience. Also, maybe some of my audience from outside
of college have experience with comedy slapstick films which is easy get answers.

8. MELODRAMATIC AND SLAPSTICK

There is no comedy horror in my film. I only researched to show facial expressions and body language. This is a good example of melodramatic
acting. I found one film called Young Frankenstein (1974) because all the actors had very excellent facial expressions. The actors have very strong
reactions, using facial expressions and physically much wilder performance. I want all my actors to be like them. These images show the use of
body language and facial reactions are extremely over the top. I love melodrama because that is easy to show and understand what’s going on.
The communication is so emotional. Also, it will make my audience feel excited and want to watch. So, in my film I will direct my characters with
melodrama all the time in my film. There will also be slapstick comedy to make it more exciting and funny. I need to plan for lots of rehearsals with
my actors because I really want my characters to look much more professional. I will be acting in my film because I have some experience and
skills from studying performing arts. I am also Deaf and facial expressions and body language are part of BSL. I’m understand some my friends
who haven’t any experience acting or some students from performing arts might not be too confident to use melodrama. I will teach them to use
melodrama before the filming starts and I don’t want any actors becoming less melodramatic and be plain and boring because that will ruin my
production.

10. SLAPSTICK
I watched some videos of Charlie Chaplin’s romance film. That film is called Tillie’s Punctured Romance. This links to my idea so I
found one example of slapstick in romantic film. The couple sit on a wooden bar and Charlie teases by gently pushing her but
suddenly they unexpectedly almost fall off. Charlie actually does fall down on the ground. I want a similar scene in my film
because I want the couple to try to impress the other couple but fails. Perhaps a woman pushes her hip at a man but the man
steps into the river to avoid her, getting his foot wet. Also, I might use the bench when another couple are sitting on it and
almost fall over backwards because the bench is wobbling. That is how I want my characters to behave in slapstick when the
couple have something embarrassing and funny. I need lots of planning and rehearsals with my actors because slapstick can be a
risk to injury but I want very simple use of slapstick. I know slapstick can cause injuries so I need to do a risk assessment. I will
research about how to avoid injury when doing stunts.

• I watched Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd’s films in YouTube. I researched for how to avoid any
injury when they do a slapstick and I choose two videos for example how to protect from slapstick.
• Charlie Chaplin: I watched his film and I noticed the scene where the crazy woman hits by the police
car. The director cut a small scene where it won’t show the car touch a woman. The car coming
toward to a woman then one scene missing out where the car officially hit on a woman, after one
missing scene a woman jump off after hit by the car. Also the director added fast motion to make
look like real fast car to hit a woman and she fells.
• Harold Lloyd: I watched his film and I noticed the scene where Harold jump off the tram and fell on
the road. I can see the director added fast motion because tram had slow drive make easy for Harold
to jump off the tram and fall on the road. Also, Harold is professor stunts and he had lots of rehearse
to be stunt.
• That is how to tricky to make look like real but actually not. I will need to plan adding rehearse with
my actors who will be slapstick. Before the rehearse, I want to practice myself with slapstick because I
want to see an experiment with slapstick to found out which is useful and simple to do it.
• I have another research in YouTube about how to be a stunt. A man have explain about how to avoid
injury while you doing a stunt. I watched it and I found some simple to falling and a man to show to
fall without any injury but that look easy for me. I will rehearse with falls because I want to see how I
feel about it. If I’m happy with some stunts then I will use them in my film.

• I researched how to use body language and facial expression communication without dialogue. So, I
watched some videos of Mr. Bean because he has lots of use of body language and facial expression
communication to tell the story. I’m so glad that I found one video of ‘Mr. Bean in Exam’. Mr. Bean had
competition with stranger man about who has the best pen, rubber, colourful pencils and watch. They
keep competing against each other until the exam begins. Then Mr. Bean gets struck with a question that
is too hard to answer. But the other man finishes with his exam and Mr. Bean stays behind and is grumpy
because he can’t finish the exam.
• This is a good example of how body language and facial expression can tell a story. My idea is about two
couples who will be against each other to see who has the better relationship. They look at each other with
dirty looks and the two women are trying to be the best looking body and clothes, then the two men try
to out-do by having the sexiest lady.
• Mr. Bean has perfect understanding of body language and facial expressions. Also he has a silly face which
is what I want my character to do. Silly facial expressions suit comedy films because that will be more
funny.
• I want my storyline have perfect understanding by use body language and facial expression. So, I want my
actors will be rehearse because that is important to make my characters look good enough. Melodrama
and slapstick have use by body language and facial expression. If some of my actors not good enough to
be melodrama or slapstick. I must found other actors because I still want my characters look marvelous like
Mr. Bean, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd. I know that will be lots of rehearse because I believe my actors
will keep giggling or distracting. Also might be they have never been use melodrama or slapstick.

I researched and found some images about how to use body language
and facial expressions. I will use some of them in my film. I will
rehearse with my actors before the filming begins because I want all
the actors to be more professional with body language and facial
expression. I’m creating my characters to be great with body language
and facial expressions. This is important for melodrama. I have been
influenced by Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Laurel and Hardy who all
have lots of melodramatic body language and facial expressions.
Which means my actors will must be good actors to make my
characters look much better and be professional.

18. I found five rules of kiss before rehearsal,
filming and stage play. I must follow the rules
because I want to make sure actors feel be
happy or be confident with it. There have lots
of information about it which is good because
that is important to do before something can
be wrong.

• My research talk about lip-kissing because I will writing the script part of my characters will be kiss so I was wonder my
course creative media production and other course performing arts will allowing real kiss in performance.
• I was research to looking for the rules of performing arts and medias allowed to part of actors kissing in the stage or
film. I found out some information about real kiss. The performance kiss is really no matter perspective and experience
because they are only approach intimacy more safe and fun. Also I found important rule that directors and producers
are not allowed to force the actors kiss because that is inappropriate. Before the filming and casting, I must discuss
with actors will talk about kiss. If they happy with it then, I will happy with it. If they don’t happy with it and I will go and
find other actors who will accept it.
• I must following five rules of performance kissing because that is important for the actors' body decision. I am totally
agree with those rules because I want to health and safety with the actors before something will be went wrong and
ruining.
• Performing arts and medias only must use mouth close kiss because that is once good enough to show romantic kiss.
The group of performing arts will be feel awkward and embarrassing to snogging in rehearsal. The kiss not need in all
rehearsal and they can kiss at the final rehearsal before the filming.
• Only if they are comfortable to lip-kiss, hugging and hold hands because I don’t want them feel awkward during the
shooting film can be affect less melodramatic and slapstick. I want all the actors feel open-minded, confident and
comfortable can make the performance look better. In my view, I believe my Deaf friends who haven’t experience
acting will be unacceptable kiss each other or in front of shooting. I will adding in my problem solve later because if my
friends won’t accept kiss then I will asking some actors who from performing arts.
• There have another way than a kiss, the actors can use hold hands, hugging, cheek kiss and long stare in eye contact.
That would be good idea for plan B in case actors refuse to kiss.

each other used by them. I think they are good idea because that is
better safe than be uncomfortable and awkward like snogging and
touch some private parts. I will give them actors/characters brief to do
with them because if they are longer use them and they will become
want to stop do that.

• I watched Charlie Chaplin’s romantic film called Tillie’s Punctured Romance (1914) because his film is similar my idea. I
noticed the scenes that two main characters are most of their front body keeping in front of camera. One reason, old
camera doesn't have any movement and only stand still. However, they are only face turn side to look each other when
they are conversation. Also, they are sometimes face toward at the camera when they are shocking, laughing or
arguing.
• That is strong influence me because I want my character's face to show their emotional in front of camera when they
will doing some melodrama and slapstick. I would like all my actor's body keep in front of camera because my
characters will show everything body language and facial expression. That is Deaf awake because Deaf people always
show their facial expression and body language.
• I will allowing to my actors often to turn face side when they are communication. Also, two couples look each other
and whispering. That can be both face forward to camera and look each other sometimes. I like all my actors doing
funny melodrama at the camera which is my audience can see their facial expression and body language clearly.
• As you see second slide of screenshots, I want to exactly that way they use show body language and facial expression
before something will happening with slapstick comedy. For example, the couple sitting the bench but the bench was
wobbling, they look at camera with facial expression to shock or scream before falling over backward. That is how I
want all my actors look at camera when they doing with melodrama and slapstick.
• Mostly contemporary films have lots of camera movement when the actors doing melodrama and slapstick. But I prefer
a simple camera movement because I want the camera keep distance on actors body language and facial expression to
show. But I will some camera movement like camera moving round the circle of the actors and some following the
actor who will be slapstick.

25. INTERTITLES
The most of silent films have an intertitles because all the silent films are no dialogue. Some full length feature films
have lots of intertitles. I decided to use an intertitles because that is link to silent film. I want to use these for give some
words for my audience will know what my characters talking about. Also, I might use these for at the beginning and
ending for brief explain about my characters doing and where they at. I don’t want too many intertitles in my film
because that will be annoying to interrupting some scene and make less scene. I’m prefer to use few intertitles and
most scenes because I’ll create my characters use body language and facial expression to plenty understand
communication. I will write some important words like arguing, angering, shouting or upsetting because that will make
my audience want to know what my characters saying when they do something action conversation. I’m still want to
use black and white intertitles because I will adding all my scenes be black and white.
