This document summarizes the features, architecture, administration, capacity forecasting, replication, persistence, and table design concepts of Redis. Key points include Redis' data structures of strings, lists, hashes and sets; its single-threaded model with auxiliary threads; persistence via snapshots to disk and AOF logging; master-slave replication topology without resume of broken transfers; and example user login data modeled as keys and indexes in Redis.
This talk cover various advanced topics in the area of backups:
- incremental backups;
- archive management;
- backup validation;
- retention policies;
etc.
Based on these features, we'll compare various backup/recovery solutions for PostgreSQL.
This information will help you to choose the most appropriate tool for your system.

There are many aspects to managing an RDBMS. Some of these are handled by an experienced DBA, but there are a good many things that any sys admin should be able to take care of if they know what to look for.
This presentation will cover basics of managing Postgres, including creating database clusters, overview of configuration, and logging. We will also look at tools to help monitor Postgres and keep an eye on what is going on. Some of the tools we will review are:
* pgtop
* pg_top
* pgfouine
* check_postgres.pl.
Check_postgres.pl is a great tool that can plug into your Nagios or Cacti monitoring systems, giving you even better visibility into your databases.

Right now postgres can't compress its data in many situations and that leads sometimes to increased storage overhead by the order of magnitude comparing with commercial DBMS. Common viewpoint that this task can be accomplished by file system level compression but most popular and well tested Linux file system can't do that. I will talk about our patches that implements page compression on disk or on disk + in memory; in what situation it is better to use what kind of compression; and also discuss experience of using compression in production.
A brief introduction to Hadoop distributed file system. How a file is broken into blocks, written and replicated on HDFS. How missing replicas are taken care of. How a job is launched and its status is checked. Some advantages and disadvantages of HDFS-1.x
Our lab planned a one-week lecture for bioinformatics beginners. I am right now the system administrator of Linux servers, NAS and Vms, so i want to teach the basics of linux system for new Linux users. And i wish to share my slide with you.

Swift Install Workshop - OpenStack Conference Spring 2012Joe Arnold
OpenStack Swift is a highly-available distributed object storage
system which supports highly concurrent workloads. Swift is the
backbone behind Cloud Files, Rackspace's storage-as-a-service
offering.
In this workshop, which will be hosted by members of SwiftStack, Inc.,
we'll walk you through deployment and use of OpenStack Swift. We'll
begin by showing you how to install Swift from the ground up.
You'll learn:
- what you should know about Swift's architecture
- how to bootstrap a basic Swift installation
After that, we'll cover how to use Swift, including information on:
- creating accounts and users
- adding, removing, and managing data
- building applications on top of Swift
Bring your laptop (with virutalization extensions enabled in the BIOS)
and we will walk through setting up Swift in a virtual machine. We'll
also build an entire application on top of Swift to illustrate how to
use Swift as a storage service. This is a workshop you won't want to
miss!

Replacing Simple Puppet Modules with ProvidersPuppet
We've probably all gone looking for the resolv.conf module, or managed a template just so we could disable PermitRootLogin, or grumbled a little at how the host provider works. What if rather than managing modules for these things, there was an idempotent type available? That is the goal of augeasproviders by the Hercules Team. By writing custom types and providers using augeas you can go back to defining your environment with a DSL, rather than managing templates and additional modules.

Linux Engineer, Rackspace
Greg is a Linux Engineer for Rackspace. An open source enthusiast by day and a fire performer by night, he has been working extensively with Augeas inside Puppet for the past two years, including contributions to the Augeasproviders module.
Inside CynosDB: MariaDB optimized for the cloud at TencentMariaDB plc
Qinglin Zhang, Database Kernel Engineer at Tencent, introduces CynosDB, Tencent's self-developed database for the cloud. CynosDB is based on MariaDB Server, but separates computing and storage. OSDC 2012 | Scaling with MongoDB by Ross LawleyNETWAYS
MongoDB's architecture features built-in support for horizontal scalability, and high availability through replica sets. Auto-sharding allows users to easily distribute data across many nodes. Replica sets enable automatic failover and recovery of database nodes within or across data centers. This session will provide an introduction to scaling with MongoDB by one of the developers working on the project.
Caching and tuning fun for high scalabilityWim Godden
Caching has been a 'hot' topic for a few years. But caching takes more than merely taking data and putting it in a cache : the right caching techniques can improve performance and reduce load significantly. But we'll also look at some major pitfalls, showing that caching the wrong way can bring down your site. If you're looking for a clear explanation about various caching techniques and tools like Memcached, Nginx and Varnish, as well as ways to deploy them in an efficient way, this talk is for you.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
