Almost half of businesses in
the UAE are struggling with a
knowledge gap when it comes
to adopting artificial intelligence
(AI), according to a survey of
business leaders in the UAE,
conducted by Vanson Bourne
and sponsored by Avaya Hold-
ings Corp.
That gap can be attributed to
the confusion between “real AI”
and “TV/movie AI” as cited by
44% of UAE respondents —
higher than the global average
of just 30%. And those organi-
zations that have success-fully
navigated this potential stum-
bling block are held back by re-
source constraints; 40% of UAE
organi-zations claim to lack
the in-house skills to facilitate
adoption. Given these challeng-
es, it isn’t surprising that 98%
of UAE businesses concede that
their organization has work to
do if it is to get the most out of
AI.
However, UAE organizations
are keen to overcome the chal-
lenges around adopting AI.
Nearly half of UAE organiza-
tions (46%) want to adopt more
solutions integrating AI-based
technologies.
“While it is encouraging to see
the strong appetite for AI in the
UAE, the fact that organizations
are still struggling to separate
the AI fact from fiction validates
the guidance and approach we
have been offer-ing our cus-
tomers,” said Yaser Alzubaidi,
Senior Director – Digital En-
gagement Solutions, Avaya
Interna-tional. “We have often
stated that organizations do not
need AI — they need solutions
to business is-sues. Applying AI
for the sake of AI can be tempt-
ing. However, the main focus
of any CEO looking to deliver
best-in-class customer and em-
ployee experiences should be on
utilizing AI, if — and only if —
it solves a business issue.”

“We are excited to see this sol-
id momentum across our email
protection business,” said BJ
Jenkins, CEO of Barracuda.
“Our product pipeline is strong,
offering customers email pro-
tection beyond traditional gate-
ways to safeguard employees
and organizations. We are fo-
cused on continuing to expand
our award-winning portfolio
with comprehensive, easy-to-
use solutions to protect against
socially-engineered, targeted
attacks like business email com-

According to Gartner: “The
email security market is starting
to adopt a continuous adaptive
risk and trust assessment (CAR-
TA) mindset and acknowledge
that perfect protection is not
possible. As a result, vendors
are evolving or emerging to sup-
port new detect and response
capabilities by integrating di-
rectly with the email system via
API.”1
Market conditions are also a
significant factor in the growing
demand for email protection as
threats continue to proliferate
and have a major impact on busi-
nesses of all sizes. A Barracuda
report released today found that
82 percent of surveyed IT se-
curity professionals have faced
email attacks over the past year.
74 percent of those surveyed
advised that these attacks are
having a direct business impact
in the form of lost productivity
(48%), downtime (36%), dam-
age to ITs reputation (28%), re-
covery costs (20%), and more.
The Lufthansa Technik Group, a global pro-
vider of full-service aerospace services, has

global supply chain. ThingWorx will help the
group monitor their operations, drive automa-
tion and increase data-driven decision-mak-
ing. Together, Windchill and ThingWorx will
en-able a significant increase in the level of
digitization within Group processes, improve
interfaces with customers and suppliers, and
help generate revenue streams through new
innovative digital business models.
“Lufthansa Technik stands for state-of-the-art
workmanship and the highest quality, and the
size of our organization combined with the
complexity of the processes and projects we
push forward has made the crucial step to-
ward holistic digital transformation impera-
tive,” said Drs. Severin S. Todt, Senior Direc-
tor of IT Completion and Design Solutions,
Lufthansa Technik AG. “Lufthansa Tech-nik
conducted a comprehensive assessment of
competitive PLM and IoT systems before
deciding on PTC, and chose PTC technology
for its world-class architecture and seamless
integration with Windchill and ThingWorx.

2019 received the highest product scores for four
use cases in the “2019 Gartner Critical Capabili-
ties for Analytics and Business Intelligence Plat-

Despite widespread investment in analytics, a
majority of business users lack easy access to
corporate data and contextual insights to make
better, timely decisions throughout the course of
their day. These users are left to navigate their
complex technology ecosystem and sift through
applications or silos of data stored across a num-
ber of BI tools, preventing a data-driven culture
from becoming pervasive across the enterprise.
“HyperIntelligence creates a unique environment
for users as they move through their day by in-
jecting valuable insights into their sightline,” said
Michael J. Saylor, CEO, MicroStrategy Incorpo-

AI strategy, according to the research, with the
remainder still weighing up use cases. With
customer experience more important than ever
before, Alzubaidi suggests focusing on those ap-
plications of AI that can have a measurable pos-
itive impact on the customer journey as the best
place to start. This means integrating AI into the
contact center.
UAE businesses agree on this point; 92% of UAE
respondents said that effective AI can transform
the performance of their contact center. Indeed,
over half (51%) are at least half-way through their
strategy for rolling out AI in the contact center.
“AI can be so much more than chatbots; for ex-
ample, First Call Resolution (FCR) is a perfect
use case for AI that demonstrates this. AI can
support the customer service agent by collating
all relevant infor-mation on the customer, in re-
al-time, and presenting it in a format that allows
the agent to easily view, interpret and action the
customer’s query without the need for multiple
touch points,” explainedAlzubaidi. “Practical ap-
plications like these will offer the fastest route to
success in implementing AI.”
As AI becomes more prominent, 87% of UAE
organizations say they’ll need to look for more
third-party support. Recognizing this, Avaya has
in recent years evolved its product portfolio and
partner ecosys-tem to offer its customers the eas-
iest path to implementing AI into their business.

panies that publish transactable offers in Micro-
soft’s expanded commercial marketplace. The
pricing models include monthly and annual SaaS
billing, flexible, custom-metered billing options,
standard contracts, and free SaaS trials that con-

SonicWall has announced the find-
ings from its mid-year update of the
2019 SonicWall Cyber Threat Re-
port, based on real-world data from
more than 1 million international
security sensors in over 200 coun-
tries. New data found an escalation
in ransomware-as-a-service, open-
source malware kits and cryptojack-
ing used by cybercriminals.
“Organizations continue to struggle
to track the evolving patterns of cy-
berattacks — the shift to malware
cocktails and evolving threat vec-
tors — which makes it extremely
difficult for them to defend them-
selves,” said SonicWall President
and CEO Bill Conner. “In the first
half of 2019, SonicWall Real-Time
Deep Memory Inspection (RTDMI)
technology unveiled 74,360 ‘nev-
er-before-seen’ malware variants.
To be effective, companies must
harness innovative technology, such
as machine learning, to be proactive
against constantly-changing attack
strategies.”
Ransomware-as-a-Service:
The Exploit Kit of Choice
While global malware volume is
down 20%, SonicWall Capture
Labs threat researchers found a
15% increase in ransomware attacks
globally and a 195% surge in ran-
somware within the United King-
dom. SonicWall threat researchers
accredit this to criminals’ new pref-
erence of ransomware-as-a-service
(RaaS) and open-source malware
kits.
IoT Dispersing Malware at
Record Pace
As businesses and consumers con-
tinue to connect devices to the
internet without proper security
measures, IoT devices have been in-
creasingly leveraged by cybercrimi-
nals to dispense malware payloads.
In the first half of 2019, SonicWall
observed a 55% increase in IoT at-
tacks, a number that outpaces the
first two quarters of the previous
year.
Bitcoin Run Keeping Crypto-
jacking in Play
Cryptojacking volume hit 52.7 mil-
lion for the first six months of the
year, a 9% increase over
the last six months of 2018.
This rise can be partially at-
tributed to the rise in bitcoin
and Monero prices, helping
cryptojacking stay relevant
as a lucrative option for cy-
bercriminals. Coinhive re-
mains the top cryptojacking
signature despite the service
closing in March 2019. One
reason for the high detection
is that compromised web-
sites have not been cleaned
since the infection, even
though the Coinhive service
is non-existent and the URL has
been abandoned.
Attacks Against Non-Stan-
dard Ports Still A Concern
Cybercriminals have their sights set
on non-standard ports for web traffic
as a manner to deliver their payloads
undetected. Based on a sample size
of more than 210 million malware
attacks recorded through June 2019,
Capture Labs monitored the largest
spike on record since tracking the
vector when one quarter of malware
attacks came across non-standard
Sonicwall2019mid-yearreportshowsworldwide

ports in May 2019 alone.
Malicious PDFs, Office Files
Remain Dangerous to Busi-
nesses
Traditional PDFs and Office files
continue to be routinely leveraged to
exploit users’trust and experience to
deliver malicious payloads. In Feb-
ruary and March 2019, SonicWall
Capture Labs threat researchers
found that 51% and 47% of ‘nev-
er-before-seen’attacks, respectively,
came via PDFs or Office files.
Rise in ransomware as a service, IoT attacks and cryptojacking
An online study of more than 10,000
respondents in EMEAi conducted
by Palo Alto Networks and YouGov
alongside Dr Jessica Barker, an ex-
pert in the human nature of cyber-
security, explores attitudes towards
new cybersecurity technologies,
such as artificial intelligence (AI),
and how these technologies protect
their digital way of life.
Just over a quarter (26%) of EMEA
respondents would prefer their cy-
bersecurity to be managed by AI
rather than a human. Italy has the
most confidence in relying on AI
(38%), while in the UK only 21
percent of people prefer AI over
humans to protect their digital way
of life.
The research suggests that those
who are more open to AI technolo-
gies have a positive outlook on the
role cybersecurity plays in their day-
to-day lives. Almost a third (29%)
of respondents online who preferred
their cybersecurity managed by AI
feel having cybersecurity checks
in place has a very positive impact
on their overall online experience,
compared to the combined average
AquarterofpeopleinEMEAprefer

of 20 percent.
Greg Day, VP and CSO EMEA at
Palo Alto Networks, comments on
the findings: “AI is already playing
a vital role in cybersecurity, helping
to detect and prevent breaches with
new capabilities that the human
brain simply could not achieve. It
is encouraging, therefore, to see the
gap closing between AI- and hu-
man-managed cybersecurity tech-
nologies, and the positive attitude
towards cybersecurity checks that
comes with a preference for AI tech-
nologies is one we hope to see em-
braced by more people in the future.
Humans are risk averse, yet innova-
Palo Alto Networks survey finds over half of respondents
take responsibility for their data online
tion requires taking new steps, and
many still see change as risk. Tak-
ing responsibility for data loss and
keeping personal data secure is the
first step in ensuring we are using
best practice within a business, and
education is key in helping respon-
dents feel safer online.”
The study also uncovered mixed
views on the perceived security of
internet of things (IoT) technolo-
gies, such as smart home devices
and wearables: 38 percent of EMEA
respondents believe them to be se-
cure, with a similar number (43%)
thinking the opposite. However,
this did vary across the region, with
those in the UAE most trusting of
IoT’s security (71% believe it to be
secure), whereas a higher proportion
in Germany (53%), France (48%),
and the UK (46%) believe them to
be insecure.

Having recently exceed- ed $1 billion in annual bookings, joining an elite group of software leaders, Veeam’s annual recurring revenue (ARR) increased 26 percent year-over-year (YoY) in Q2 2019, a testament to the success of a unique subscription pricing model intro- duced earlier this year for all new Veeam products, including new Vee- am Availability Suite 9.5 Update 4. Hailed as one of the most important releases in Veeam company history, Veeam Availability Suite U4 is ap- proaching 350,000 downloads since its release in January. “As we continue to heavily invest in our R&D, sales and marketing, and partner ecosystem, we’re seeing increased adoption of Veeam’s Sub- scription licensing among our cus- tomers across all regions worldwide,” said Ratmir Timashev, Co-Founder and Executive Vice President (EVP) of Sales & Marketing. “Each geog- raphy reported growth, which shows that, and as we move into Act II of our evolution — the Hybrid Cloud — it’s an exciting time to be at Veeam. We’re excited to support their journey and meet data expectations as the No. 1 player in Cloud Data Management.” “Collaboration with strategic tech- nology partners has never been stron- ger or in higher demand,” Timashev continued. “We expect to make addi- tional partner announcements in 2H 2019 to further feed the demand of our partners to combine Veeam back- up and data protection software with industry-leading hardware, storage and hyperconverged solutions. That gap can be attributed to the confusion between “real AI” and “TV/movie AI” as cited by 44% of UAE respondents — higher than the global average of just 30%. And those organi- zations that have success-fully navigated this potential stum- bling block are held back by re- source constraints; 40% of UAE organi-zations claim to lack the in-house skills to facilitate adoption. Given these challeng- es, it isn’t surprising that 98% of UAE businesses concede that their organization has work to do if it is to get the most out of AI. However, UAE organizations are keen to overcome the chal- lenges around adopting AI. Nearly half of UAE organiza- tions (46%) want to adopt more solutions integrating AI-based technologies. “While it is encouraging to see the strong appetite for AI in the UAE, the fact that organizations are still struggling to separate the AI fact from fiction validates the guidance and approach we have been offer-ing our cus- tomers,” said Yaser Alzubaidi, Senior Director – Digital En- gagement Solutions, Avaya Interna-tional. “We have often stated that organizations do not need AI — they need solutions to business is-sues. Applying AI for the sake of AI can be tempt- ing. With customer experience more important than ever before, Alzubaidi suggests focusing on those ap- plications of AI that can have a measurable pos- itive impact on the customer journey as the best place to start. This means integrating AI into the contact center. UAE businesses agree on this point; 92% of UAE respondents said that effective AI can transform the performance of their contact center. Indeed, over half (51%) are at least half-way through their strategy for rolling out AI in the contact center. “AI can be so much more than chatbots; for ex- ample, First Call Resolution (FCR) is a perfect use case for AI that demonstrates this. AI can support the customer service agent by collating all relevant infor-mation on the customer, in re- al-time, and presenting it in a format that allows the agent to easily view, interpret and action the customer’s query without the need for multiple touch points,” explainedAlzubaidi. “Practical ap- plications like these will offer the fastest route to success in implementing AI.” As AI becomes more prominent, 87% of UAE organizations say they’ll need to look for more third-party support. Recognizing this, Avaya has in recent years evolved its product portfolio and partner ecosys-tem to offer its customers the eas- iest path to implementing AI into their business. >> From page 3 Yaser Alzubaidi Senior Director – DES, Avaya NewAvaya Research... For more information, please write to sales.value@redingtonmea.com August 2019 / 06 SonicWall has announced the find- ings from its mid-year update of the 2019 SonicWall Cyber Threat Re- port, based on real-world data from more than 1 million international security sensors in over 200 coun- tries. New data found an escalation in ransomware-as-a-service, open- source malware kits and cryptojack- ing used by cybercriminals. “Organizations continue to struggle to track the evolving patterns of cy- berattacks — the shift to malware cocktails and evolving threat vec- tors — which makes it extremely difficult for them to defend them- selves,” said SonicWall President and CEO Bill Conner. “In the first half of 2019, SonicWall Real-Time Deep Memory Inspection (RTDMI) technology unveiled 74,360 ‘nev- er-before-seen’ malware variants. To be effective, companies must harness innovative technology, such as machine learning, to be proactive against constantly-changing attack strategies.” Ransomware-as-a-Service: The Exploit Kit of Choice While global malware volume is down 20%, SonicWall Capture Labs threat researchers found a 15% increase in ransomware attacks globally and a 195% surge in ran- somware within the United King- dom. SonicWall threat researchers accredit this to criminals’ new pref- erence of ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) and open-source malware kits. IoT Dispersing Malware at Record Pace As businesses and consumers con- tinue to connect devices to the internet without proper security measures, IoT devices have been in- creasingly leveraged by cybercrimi- nals to dispense malware payloads. In the first half of 2019, SonicWall observed a 55% increase in IoT at- tacks, a number that outpaces the first two quarters of the previous year. Bitcoin Run Keeping Crypto- jacking in Play Cryptojacking volume hit 52.7 mil- lion for the first six months of the year, a 9% increase over the last six months of 2018. This rise can be partially at- tributed to the rise in bitcoin and Monero prices, helping cryptojacking stay relevant as a lucrative option for cy- bercriminals. Coinhive re- mains the top cryptojacking signature despite the service closing in March 2019. One reason for the high detection is that compromised web- sites have not been cleaned since the infection, even though the Coinhive service is non-existent and the URL has been abandoned. Attacks Against Non-Stan- dard Ports Still A Concern Cybercriminals have their sights set on non-standard ports for web traffic as a manner to deliver their payloads undetected. Based on a sample size of more than 210 million malware attacks recorded through June 2019, Capture Labs monitored the largest spike on record since tracking the vector when one quarter of malware attacks came across non-standard Sonicwall2019mid-yearreportshowsworldwide malwaredecreaseof20% ports in May 2019 alone. Malicious PDFs, Office Files Remain Dangerous to Busi- nesses Traditional PDFs and Office files continue to be routinely leveraged to exploit users’trust and experience to deliver malicious payloads. In Feb- ruary and March 2019, SonicWall Capture Labs threat researchers found that 51% and 47% of ‘nev- er-before-seen’attacks, respectively, came via PDFs or Office files. Rise in ransomware as a service, IoT attacks and cryptojacking An online study of more than 10,000 respondents in EMEAi conducted by Palo Alto Networks and YouGov alongside Dr Jessica Barker, an ex- pert in the human nature of cyber- security, explores attitudes towards new cybersecurity technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), and how these technologies protect their digital way of life. Just over a quarter (26%) of EMEA respondents would prefer their cy- bersecurity to be managed by AI rather than a human. Italy has the most confidence in relying on AI (38%), while in the UK only 21 percent of people prefer AI over humans to protect their digital way of life. The research suggests that those who are more open to AI technolo- gies have a positive outlook on the role cybersecurity plays in their day- to-day lives. Almost a third (29%) of respondents online who preferred their cybersecurity managed by AI feel having cybersecurity checks in place has a very positive impact on their overall online experience, compared to the combined average AquarterofpeopleinEMEAprefer CybersecuritymanagedbyAI of 20 percent. Greg Day, VP and CSO EMEA at Palo Alto Networks, comments on the findings: “AI is already playing a vital role in cybersecurity, helping to detect and prevent breaches with new capabilities that the human brain simply could not achieve. It is encouraging, therefore, to see the gap closing between AI- and hu- man-managed cybersecurity tech- nologies, and the positive attitude towards cybersecurity checks that comes with a preference for AI tech- nologies is one we hope to see em- braced by more people in the future.
