Distributed Storage and Compute With Ceph's librados (Vault 2015)Sage Weil
The Ceph distributed storage system sports object, block, and file interfaces to a single storage cluster. These interface are built on a distributed object storage and compute platform called RADOS, which exports a conceptually simple yet powerful interface for storing and processing large amounts of data and is well-suited for backing web-scale applications and data analytics. In features a rich object model, efficient key/value storage, atomic transactions (including efficient compare-and-swap semantics), object cloning and other primitives for supporting snapshots, simple inter-client communication and coordination (ala Zookeeper), and the ability to extend the object interface using arbitrary code executed on the storage node. This talk will focus on librados API, how it is used, the security model, and some examples of RADOS classes implementing interesting functionality.
The State of Ceph, Manila, and Containers in OpenStackSage Weil
OpenStack users deploying Ceph for block (Cinder) and object (S3/Swift) are unsurprisingly looking at Manila and CephFS to round out a unified storage solution. Ceph is based on a low-level object storage layer call RADOS that serves as the foundation for its object, block, and file services. Manila's file as a service in OpenStack enables a range of container-based use-cases with Docker and Kubernetes, but a variety of deployment architectures are possible.
This talk will cover the current state of CephFS support in Manila, including upstream Manila support, Manila works in progress, a progress update on CephFS itself, including new multi-tenancy support to facilitate cloud deployments, and a discussion of how this impact container deployment scenarios in an OpenStack cloud.

Ceph, Now and Later: Our Plan for Open Unified Cloud StorageSage Weil
Ceph is a highly scalable open source distributed storage system that provides object, block, and file interfaces on a single platform. Although Ceph RBD block storage has dominated OpenStack deployments for several years, maturing object (S3, Swift, and librados) interfaces and stable CephFS (file) interfaces now make Ceph the only fully open source unified storage platform.
This talk will cover Ceph's architectural vision and project mission and how our approach differs from alternative approaches to storage in the OpenStack ecosystem. In particular, we will look at how our open development model dovetails well with OpenStack, how major contributors are advancing Ceph capabilities and performance at a rapid pace to adapt to new hardware types and deployment models, and what major features we are priotizing for the next few years to meet the needs of expanding cloud workloads.
RFID Based Warehouse Management of Perishable ProductsIOSR Journals
Abstract: The changing global market scenario, high level of competition, and faster obsolescence of
perishable products due to short self life and changing customer demand are among the key challenges faced by
perishable supply chains. Supply chains need to compete with growing variety of products, short delivery time,
higher cycle service level, high quality and lower cost. Perishability imposes an intense pressure on managers
as it adds an additional cost of disposal of outdated items, leading to out-of-stock situations and also loss of
company faith. These problems are arising mostly due to the lack of information at every stage of the supply
chains. The inadequate information about product quality, quantity, demand variability, product availability
and lead times creates the bullwhip effect (BWE) at all stages and chains leads to the mismanagement.
RFID technologies, with the appropriate IT infrastructure, would help major distributors and manufacturers, as
well as health-care system, defence industries, and global supply chains in which products and product
shipments must be traced and identified in a non-contact, wireless fashion using a computer network. This
paper presents the impact of RFID in warehouse management of perishable products. It provides mathematical
framework to asses the benefits of RFID in warehouse management. It helps management in the variety of ways
including improvement in receiving and shipping processes, reduction in cycle counting efforts, reduction in
stock outs/excess inventory, decreased counterfeiting, decreased returns, and reduction in inventory loss due to
shrinkage and obsolescence. A sensitivity analysis has been presented at the end of paper which shows the
compound effect of RFID, reduction in lead time and lead time variability. In all scenarios inventory level is
reduced by certain percentage by incorporating RFID.

In a world where empowering the citizen data scientist is paramount, collective intelligence holds the key. In this in-depth session, John K. Thompson, GM, Dell Statistica, will examine the concept of collective intelligence as it relates to analytics, and explain how organizations lacking the skills to build the right analytical models themselves can now leverage the work of those who do have the necessary skills – all without having to hire those experts directly.
We wanted to know how companies viewed the changing data warehousing landscape, so we surveyed 200 businesses to learn more about the issues they faced. In "Delivering the Best of All Worlds for Today's Analytics" we compare the technology, present the options, and provide findings from our survey. We also discuss the latest column store techniques and open source technology to provide both enterprise class performance and affordability.
We’re in the difficult middle years of the information age, where a nexus of factors like cheap storage, rich HD media, ubiquitous connectivity and more sophisticated SaaS products are generating more data than we can affordably store or meaningfully process.
These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to show how in improvements in printed electronics, wireless telecom, and the Internet are enabling the greater use of smart logistics. Logistics now represents 10% of global GDP thus representing a large percentage of expenditures. Improvements in printed electronics enables cheaper and better RFID tags and smart packaging; the latter can be accessed by logistic companies and consumers. All of this enables better monitoring of products throughout their journey to the marketplace, on ships, in warehouses, and in retail outlets. It also enables customers to more easily find products in retail outlets and for robots to find products in warehouses.

These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
