The built environment consumes more natural
resources than necessary and therefore
generates a large amount of waste. As much
as 30% of all building materials delivered to a
typical construction site can end up as waste.

All these statistics push us to think more
about building an ecosystem in line with the
aspirations of sustainable development goals,
protecting the environment, and making the
most of raw materials.
In this article, we’ll shed light on the recycling
of C&D materials and its benefits to the
projects and for the environment

“C&D”
Construction and demolition (C&D)
materials are generated when new
building and civil-engineering structures
are built and when existing buildings and
civil-engineering structures are renovated
or demolished (including deconstruction
activities). [EPA]
Treatment of waste
it is a physical, thermal, chemical, or biological process, including
sorting, which modifies the characteristics of waste so as to reduce its
volume or its hazardous nature, to facilitate its handling, or to permit
recovery.

Inert waste is waste which, during
storage, does not undergo any
significant physical, chemical or
biological modification. They do not
decompose, burn or biodegrade and do
not deteriorate other materials with
which they come in contact.
Inert waste
These are non-inert
wastes which do not
exhibit any
“dangerous”
characteristics (non-
toxic, non-corrosive,
non-explosive, etc.).
It is the “banal”
waste of companies
Non-hazardous waste
It is the waste resulting from industrial
activity which represents a risk to
health or the environment and which
requires appropriate treatment.

The hierarchy of waste treatment methods gives priority to
waste prevention. Then, when that is not possible, making the
link between waste and resources.
Tools like block chain technology and (BIM) software allow
companies to monitor supply chains and make recovery and
recycling plans for assets nearing the end of their useful life.

The cost of waste treatment and recycling is very varied
and Subject to several effects and factors
The region does seem to have a certain influence on the price, probably depending on
the need and availability of inert materials,
Conversely, the price does not seem to be linked only to the type of producer, or even to
the annual quantity of waste; however, we observe that the large producers of waste
very rarely have high prices, probably due to better negotiating power and the
importance of their production,
The type of host site (recycling centers, sorting platforms, quarries, etc.) seems to show
a certain impact, and some trends have been observed, but the low number of significant
values prevents any clear conclusion.

Today, faced with the scarcity of resources and the environmental emergency, it has
become essential to adopt new ways of building, renovation, and deconstructing.
Recycling construction materials provides an opportunity to achieve cost savings. These
savings include the cost of new materials, and also transportation and disposal costs. The
use of recycled materials also results in energy savings and reduced carbon emissions.
Jobs created by recycling and reuse outnumber traditional waste disposal jobs 9-to-1.
