• A recorder records electrical & non-electrical
quantities as a function of time.
• This record may be written or printed, and later on,
can be examined and analyzed to obtain a better
understanding and control of the processes.

Display and store a pen and ink record of the history of
some physical event.
 X-Y Recorders
 Strip chart Recorders
GRAPHIC RECORDERS
• A X-Y recorder is an instrument
which gives a graphic record of
the relationship between two
variables
• Pen moves in two axes X,Y.
X-Y RECORDER
X-Y RECORDER
There are two self balancing potentiometers -
 One moves a recording pen in X direction and controls the
position of rolls.
 The Other moves the recording pen in Y direction at
right angles to the X and controls the position of the
recording pen.
Emf is used for operation of X-Y recorders.
The construction consists of pair of servo systems,
recording pens and attenuators.
CONSTRUCTION OF X-Y RECORDER
A signal enters each of two channels and are attenuated
to the inherent range, then passed to a balance circuit
and compared with reference voltage.
The difference between the input signal voltage and the
reference voltage is fed to a chopper which converts dc
to dc signals.
The signal is then amplified. Servo-meter is actuated, the
system is balanced and hold it in balance as the value of
quantity being recorded.
WORKING OF X-Y RECORDER
o Sensitivity of
10microvolt/mm.
o Slewing speed of 1.5 m/s.
o Used in torque-speed
characteristics of motor.
o Plotting stress and strain
curves.
o Regulation curves of power
supplies.
ADVANTAGES OF X-Y RECORDER
PRINCIPLE:
When a magnetic tape
is passed through a
recording head any signal
recorded on the tape appears
as magnetic pattern
dispersed in space along the
tape, similar to the original
coil current variation with
time.

There are two self balancing potentiometers -  One moves a recording pen in X direction and controls the position of rolls.  The Other moves the recording pen in Y direction at right angles to the X and controls the position of the recording pen.   • 10. A signal enters each of two channels and are attenuated to the inherent range, then passed to a balance circuit and compared with reference voltage. The difference between the input signal voltage and the reference voltage is fed to a chopper which converts dc to dc signals. The signal is then amplified.
