The presentation provides an introduction to the Open badges concept - working from the basic concept of badges, then digital badges and final open digital badges. Then looks at how the Open Badges concept has led to its adoption by various Professional Development groups around the world thus putting into context the current efforts by TESOL Arabia’s Education Technology sig to realize the same. The presentation’s prime purpose is to share these efforts and to invite participant feedback and involvement. It seeks to first explain how such a strategy can promote professional development pursuits by EFL educators, encourage them to share those efforts with EFL educators in the region, and to have those efforts formally recognized so that they stimulate networking amongst those same EFL educators. That appreciation may extend beyond one’s immediate peers, to include the community of EFL educators in the region plus school administrators, and potentially even ministry officials and future employers. It outlines the current state of the TAEDTECH sig’s efforts to realize Open Badges. It notes important hurdles discovered to date; hurdles that will need to be addressed if the implementation of the concept is to be realized and successful. It concludes by inviting participant input / feedback on the matter and offers suggestions on how individuals can contribute to help realize or shape the concept.

Slides from presentation at Edmedia 2013. They cover the findings of our research and some recommendations on how to start using Open Badges at other institutions
In this session, you will learn about what Open Badges are and look at how and why various institutions and organizations are using badges as a way of rethinking recognition. You will see various badge systems, pathways and the learning design process ‘behind the badge’ to get you thinking about what kind of badges you might consider for your own context. This session is geared toward those who are new to these amazing alternative forms of recognition. The examples we’ll look at will help participants see the many ways badges can be used to recognize everything from achievements to knowledge and skills to affiliations and values. We’ll also take a peek at what’s been going on under the CanCred Factory hood during the eCampusOntario Open Badge evaluation period. We’ll show you how the creation and issuing of badges happens and get you thinking about possible partners and frameworks you could work with. You’ll leave ramped and ready to get started on your own badging system...and possibly with an open badge that you’ve earned!

Using Open Badge 'Packs' to support teaching across the curriculumMatthew Rogers
We will be exploring the use of Open Badges to scaffold and support cross curricular teaching in schools. We will be focusing in on key (free) resources around e-safety and social networking, CPD Open Badges for teachers and practitioners and Open badges that can be used to support assessment. Alongside the exploration of these badge packs, participants will be able to explore the Makewav.es platform where they can earn, create and display their own Open Badges.
As the second part of the training we will be able to explore our new platform ‘Open Badge Academy’ (OBA) which is just to be launch as a pilot in October. Here, learners have the opportunity to evidence their learning and create pathways both into and through employment. Working alongside Industry partners, the badges which will sit on the OBA are part of an ecosystem where all learning is recognised and valued.

Slides from a day of learning, making and creating in Glasgow.
Event information:
DigitalMe helps organisations to communicate the skills they need and people to evidence the skills they have using Open Badges. We invite you to join the DigitalMe Open Badge consultants for a day of designing, creating and connecting Open Badges.
This free event, which is a fringe activity for the pathway DigitalMe are leading at MozFest this year, will introduce Open Badges, and provide hands-on activities to design badges that are of value. During the event, you will be able to use our new online tool and mobile app to create and issue badges.
A key aim of the Scottish Government’s Youth Employment Strategy, Developing the Young Workforce is to build bridges between education, business and industry and the current Enhancement Theme for the Quality Assurance Authority for Higher Education (QAA) is Student Transitions into, during and out of university. Hear case studies of how Open Badges can be used to bridge transitions and engage in activities to create badge pathways connecting learners to destination points such as learning opportunities or employment.
Outcomes of the event:
- Learn what Open Badges are and how they can communicate the skills your organisation needs or evidence the skills you have
- Learn how to design the data to create a badge of value
- Learn how to create and issue a badge using a website and mobile app
- Learn how to create badge pathways to learning or employment opportunities
- Learn how badges can support transitions and act as bridges between education and employment
The presentation is about a comparative study of online formative assessment applications and their possible affordances in EFL instruction. This stems from the presenter’s observation of two emerging trends that have the power to transform EFL instruction; the availability of an increasing number of free applications that facilitate formative assessment and a growing interest in promoting mobile learning strategies, especially among EFL and Writing instructors at tertiary level institutions in the UAE.
It identifies those applications currently ranked highest in educator based surveys such as Jane Harts 100 tools, Edshelf and Graphite. It lists affordances that may be of most interest to EFL and Writing instructors and which are common to such applications. It then engages in a comparative analysis of the applications based on these affordances. It concludes to suggest that the increased interest in such formative assessment apps may stem from their power to inform EFL instructional design and to realize more personalized EFL instruction in a transformative way.

The session gave an overview of what online professional development opportunities
TESOL Arabia already supports and those planned for the future. The presentation also featured a "live" demonstration of online professional development strategies currently being used by TESOL Arabia's Education Technology SIG with special attention placed on how these strategies are free, easy to use, and available to anyone. This is all part of the Organization's efforts to make PD opportunities available to members wherever they might be in the Middle East and North Africa region.

PD Workshops - their purpose? Improved through the use of social networking t...Jim (James) Buckingham
A look at how current approaches to promoting PD for EFL instructors in the UAE may not be that effective. The author suggests the use of social networking tools to support sharing, testing, and collaborating amongst instructors as an alternative. This may also help realize a "community of best practice" for UAE based EFL instructors. On a micro level this can be accomplished through reflective practice and Journaling via blogs. On a macro level this might be accomplished through social networking tools such as Ning, Twitter and Facebook. Efforts are under way to join TESOL Arabia SIGs via such tools.
A look at Mark Warschauer's article INVITED COMMENTARY: NEW TOOLS FOR TEACHING WRITING and how this may be useful for promoting / stimulating a community of practice within the UC - Languages department at Zayed University to identify those tools that are most effective in supporting writing objectives.

Key Question
• What are the critics saying?
Over reliance on extrinsic motivation
A type of extrinsic motivator that competes with an
individual's intrinsic motivation for accomplishment
and mastery
Gives out rewards for things that individuals or
students should already be doing; take away the
badge.. and the desired behaviour disappears

Key Question
• What are the critics saying?
Not student centered or driven

interesting to badge recipients because they are
created to promote behavior that aligns with the goals
of the badge issuer and not necessarily the badge
recipient (Dave Cormier)
