- The aim of this session is to review how Open Badges can be used to create learning pathways.
- First of all we will review what open badges actually are. People like to be recognised for their achievements and their accomplishments, traditionally these have been in the form of paper certificates and whilst they easy to create and easy to display they are very difficult to verify. Most certificates do not outline why they were achieved and watch the achievements were for.
- Badges are a visual representation of achievements, interests or skills which can be viewed instantly.
- Digital badges take this concept one step further and allow people to view your accomplishments online. Most digital badges however are tied to particular websites or apps. For example TripAdvisor and Foursquare.
- Open badges move one step further and allow digital badges to be transferable. They are an open online standard which recognise formals and informal learning and achievements. They can be collected from multiple sources into cloud based storage.

- Badges are used by a number of different types of organisations Open badges can be collected from a number of sources for example education, the workplace or from hobbies and interests.
- Badges are collected into a cloud-based backpack and can be shared to social networks and other websites for display. They can be used as part of job searching, applications for education and for access to professional bodies.
- As part of the program Mozilla have created a backpack. This is a cloud based storage system which allows people to display and manage their badges. Collections can be created of badges which can then be made public and shared on social media and other websites.
- Open badges are being issued by a large number of establishments including household names such as IBM Samsung and the BBC. Children and students are also being issued with badges through schools colleges and universities. The large number of organisations issuing badges means they are no longer niche idea, but instead have are replacing certificates.
- Open learn are using badges to recognise completion of some of their MOOCS. Mainly aimed at school leavers and students, there is a module on learning which I am currently completing
- Nine badges on topics surrounding digital literacy. Some are really hard, others not so. Quiz then learning.
- New innovation, a baccalaureate for 14 to 19 year olds. All with Open Badges.
- How can open badges be used within a learning pathway?
- This form is used for individual recognition, eg: schools, one off events such as conferences etc Could also be used for CPD
- Used as part of MOOCs and other courses to build a system where steps are accredited towards a whole. Equivalent of gaining credits for taking part in modules.
- Cornell university currently using this model to build credits towards the final degree.
