The need to stay up to date on the latest developments in your field of study has never been more urgent. With increasing competition, stagnant unemployment and expected budget shortfalls every professional must be able to prove their value to the organization. The good news is that opportunities for learning are abundant and new advances in technology have produced a variety of options suitable for any budget or schedule. Still, resources are scarce and the pressure to make the most of every moment can derail many attempts to explore new learning experiences. This session will address steps you can take to get the most return out of your investment of time and money in professional development activities.
The second presentation about ePortfolios for NUML, Islamabad, Pakistan, December 12, 2018. This presentation focuses on the "e" part of ePortfolios: online tools and mobile apps.
Is your content working? This presentation will help institutions answer this question for every piece of content they publish, in every medium and channel. Content is the way our organizations’ work is manifested online — so content success translates to higher success of programs, services, and programs. Using real stories, this session will connect content effectiveness with business results. Attendees will leave with their own content success metrics.
Many schools create, manage, and measure content without a true strategy — without a sense of the audience and with no explicit, measurable goal. Once you do have an audience and goals, you can start to interpret the data from analytics software, survey results, usability testing, etc. We’ll discover which metrics are the most important for content and user experience evaluations, and learn to translate data into actionable recommendations for stakeholders.
This session will cover how the “old” way is ineffective, and will paint the picture of a better way of working that will result in more effective content. This session will include interactive exercises as well as facilitated discussion, so that at the end, attendees will have their own content success metrics to take back to their schools.
ePortfolios empower students to emphasize individual strengths, therefore, allowing them to become key players in their own learning. Join the presenter as she discusses the development and implementation of ePortfolios.
These are the slides I gave to a group of students at Gordon College on LinkedIn and how they can use it to network, establish and online presence and find a job or internship.

Higher Education Institutions often forget to incorporate University Web Portals Interaction Design and Information Architecture when envisioning Internationalization Strategy. This Conference shows practical advice and case studies, and how a better university international web portal can drive not only to attract more and better students, but also to improve Search Engine Optimization and Scientific Visibility / Academic Marketing, "killing two birds (or more) with one stone"
Presentation to graduate students at Milano | The New School for Management and Urban Policy about what leaders need to know about technology and social media
The presentation is about a comparative study of online formative assessment applications and their possible affordances in EFL instruction. This stems from the presenter’s observation of two emerging trends that have the power to transform EFL instruction; the availability of an increasing number of free applications that facilitate formative assessment and a growing interest in promoting mobile learning strategies, especially among EFL and Writing instructors at tertiary level institutions in the UAE.
It identifies those applications currently ranked highest in educator based surveys such as Jane Harts 100 tools, Edshelf and Graphite. It lists affordances that may be of most interest to EFL and Writing instructors and which are common to such applications. It then engages in a comparative analysis of the applications based on these affordances. It concludes to suggest that the increased interest in such formative assessment apps may stem from their power to inform EFL instructional design and to realize more personalized EFL instruction in a transformative way.

Slides used to support a presentation by James Buckingham (face to face) and Vance Stevens (online) made 3 October, 2015 as part of the 2nd Annual TESOL Arabia "Special Interest Group" Conference - "New Beginnings".
The session gave an overview of what online professional development opportunities
TESOL Arabia already supports and those planned for the future. The presentation also featured a "live" demonstration of online professional development strategies currently being used by TESOL Arabia's Education Technology SIG with special attention placed on how these strategies are free, easy to use, and available to anyone. This is all part of the Organization's efforts to make PD opportunities available to members wherever they might be in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Recognizing "your" PD via Mozilla Open Badges (TACON 2014, Dubai, UAE)Jim (James) Buckingham
The presentation provides an introduction to the Open badges concept - working from the basic concept of badges, then digital badges and final open digital badges. Then looks at how the Open Badges concept has led to its adoption by various Professional Development groups around the world thus putting into context the current efforts by TESOL Arabia’s Education Technology sig to realize the same. The presentation’s prime purpose is to share these efforts and to invite participant feedback and involvement. It seeks to first explain how such a strategy can promote professional development pursuits by EFL educators, encourage them to share those efforts with EFL educators in the region, and to have those efforts formally recognized so that they stimulate networking amongst those same EFL educators. That appreciation may extend beyond one’s immediate peers, to include the community of EFL educators in the region plus school administrators, and potentially even ministry officials and future employers. It outlines the current state of the TAEDTECH sig’s efforts to realize Open Badges. It notes important hurdles discovered to date; hurdles that will need to be addressed if the implementation of the concept is to be realized and successful. It concludes by inviting participant input / feedback on the matter and offers suggestions on how individuals can contribute to help realize or shape the concept.
Introduction to digital badges & "open" digital badges. Focus on the value proposition of badges for today's young graduate, worker, employer, and life long learner.

PD Workshops - their purpose? Improved through the use of social networking t...Jim (James) Buckingham
A look at how current approaches to promoting PD for EFL instructors in the UAE may not be that effective. The author suggests the use of social networking tools to support sharing, testing, and collaborating amongst instructors as an alternative. This may also help realize a "community of best practice" for UAE based EFL instructors. On a micro level this can be accomplished through reflective practice and Journaling via blogs. On a macro level this might be accomplished through social networking tools such as Ning, Twitter and Facebook. Efforts are under way to join TESOL Arabia SIGs via such tools.
A look at Mark Warschauer's article INVITED COMMENTARY: NEW TOOLS FOR TEACHING WRITING and how this may be useful for promoting / stimulating a community of practice within the UC - Languages department at Zayed University to identify those tools that are most effective in supporting writing objectives.
PD Workshops - their purpose? do they really work? how could they be improved?Jim (James) Buckingham
A review and rethink on the effectiveness of professional development through face to face presentations/workshops... How realizing an online learning community with the help of Web 2.0 technologies may offer an attractive alternative to "revising" pd workshops as we know them.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
