2. LANGUAGE
A system of communication having different sound patterns and
written symbols , which is used by a person to convey his/her
message to others.
3. BORROWING IN LANGUAGE
In linguistics, borrowing is referred to a process in which one
words is taken from a language and it is used in another
language, completely or partially.
4. DONER AND BORROWING LANGUAGE
Donor language
The language from which a word has been taken is called donor
or source language.
Recipient language
The language which takes any word from other language is
called recipient.
5. Reasons of borrowing in language
Borrowing has been an important part in linguistic history.
Borrowing is a process which keeps languages alive. There are
many reasons due to which a language borrows words from other
languages. Few of them are mentioned below.
Need
Cultural mastery
Lack of equivalent translation
To show social status
Conversation between speakers of different languages
6. Need
One of the basic causes of word borrowing in linguistics is need.
This situation occurs when a language do not have a specific
term or expression for any thing or idea which is new to its
speakers. So , to fulfil this space the language takes a name or
word from another language.
Examples
Facebook and Coronavirus in Urdu.
7. Cultural Mastery
Mastery of a culture over another is also a reason of word
borrowing. When a nation invades or conquers another , the
culture of the conquerors also effects or overcomes the defeated
culture. Language as an aspect of culture , accepts new words or
terms from invaded language.
For example
Norman conquest
British invasion in Sub-continent
8. Lack of equivalent translation
Another cause is the lack of an equivalent translation of a term or
phrase which expresses a particular feeling or situation. Modern
word is a global village, and a vast literature is being translated
from one language to many others. While translation, the
translators come across with this problem. So, to over come this
situation the original term or phrase or the source language is
used in the recipient language.
9. To show high social status
The persons of upper social classes are usually inclined to
foreign prestigious languages which are normally unfamiliar to
the lower classes. The elite also uses the words of the foreign
language while talking in there own (native) language. Thus,
when they use word of second language, slowly and gradually
the words find their space in their recipient language.
For example
Pakistan elite using English words.
10. Conversation between speakers of
different languages
The conversation between speakers of different languages could
also results in borrowings. When they talk, they use intentionally
or unintentionally the words of their own language. The listener
when frequently listens a word or expression , he accepts it and
use in his language to, even taking to the native speakers of his
own native language. This borrowing could take place in this
situation also.
