Islamic Perspective of psychology
Thanvi believed in individual potentialities
and qualities of human beings.
Ashraf Ali Thanvi divided his therapies into
two kinds:
1. Reading therapy
2. Communication therapy
Emphasizes on patient’s own will and effort
in the cure of illness or disease
 Miracle
 Guarantee for forgiveness on the day of
judgment
 Promise of material gain or better prospects of
life
 Automatic cure through counselor’s attention
 Possibility of action without will
Methods of psychological
treatment by Maulana Thanvi
1. Cure by reading (reading
therapy)
2. Cure by company
(communication therapy)
 Ashraf Ali Thanvi gave reading therapy which
contains the psychological factors. This therapy
is based on free association technique. In this
technique, one is free to write all his views and
ideas on a paper. The subjects treated by him
were also given some material to learn from
Quran. But the basic and the most
essential condition for this therapy is believe
in ALLAH.
Meant for those who can read and write
Simple, easier, take less time
Requires much more work from
psychotherapy
Requires full confidence in counselor
Requires complete faith in God
Basically a religious therapy
Ashraf thanvi asked the patients to write
down their problems.
Patient must be conscious of his anxiety
and explain his trouble in writing.
He believe that some individuals needed
direct guidance and counseling.
After reading the patient contents, he put
some questions to satisfy and prepare his
patients for treatment
He also provided reading material out of
religious scholar’s books to his patients.
Based on Muslim philosophy.
Therapy believes that every man has a
definite purpose of life.
