1. Ray Bradbury Essays
Crafting an essay on the works of Ray Bradbury can be both an intellectually stimulating and
challenging endeavor. The difficulty lies not only in analyzing the depth of Bradbury's literary
creations but also in navigating the intricate web of themes, symbolism, and social commentary
that permeate his writings.
Ray Bradbury's essays often delve into complex ideas, exploring the realms of science fiction,
dystopia, and the human condition. To effectively capture the essence of his thought-provoking
narratives, one must possess a keen understanding of Bradbury's unique style, cultural context,
and the underlying messages that he embeds within his stories.
Furthermore, the challenge extends to the need for a nuanced exploration of Bradbury's impact
on literature and society. It requires a discerning eye to unravel the layers of meaning,
deciphering the allegorical elements, and connecting them to the broader tapestry of literary
history.
While the task may seem formidable, the reward lies in the opportunity to engage deeply with
the mind of a literary genius. It demands not only analytical prowess but also a genuine
appreciation for the artistry of Bradbury's storytelling.
In conclusion, undertaking the task of writing an essay on Ray Bradbury's works requires a
commitment to intellectual exploration and a dedication to unraveling the complexities woven
into his narratives. The challenge, however, is outweighed by the chance to appreciate and
convey the brilliance of Bradbury's literary contributions.

2. How The Power Of Expectations Can Allow You And Bend...
Humans are gullible creatures who often believe everything they hear or see to be
the truth. It is not uncommon for one to check their horoscope based on their
zodiac sign. I admit, I have been one of those people who believed that their
personalities and daily lives can be categorized based on their date of birth, and
expect that these vague generalizations of common traits and behaviors are tailored to
their own lives, leading them to believe it is the truth. However, I later realized that
one can not determine my personality if they have never met me, though before
then, I had not realized that since I expected the horoscope to reflect my daily life, I
believed it was true. One s expectations can truly alter their perception of... Show

I can agree that one s expectations have a power over their actions and their brain
activity, as demonstrated with the placebo effect, though I am skeptical about the
gullibility of the subjects who were tested and the limits of expectations.
Additionally, Berdik contradicts himself, and while he suggests that expectations
about a wine s quality (based on price or a critic s review) actually change the level
of activity in the brain s reward centers when a person takes a sip though he also
implies that at some point, a wine will taste lousy enough that we ll spit it out even
though the premium price tag suggests it s delicious (Berdik). However, this still
demonstrates that expectations can bend reality, though certain expectations may
have more of an effect than others. Berdik also cites that expectations about
performance can backfire and lead one to choke under pressure, using the example
of the British national soccer team, who, despite their skill level and supportive fan
base who expect the team to succeed, are notorious for losing high pressure penalty
kick shootouts (Berdik). However, Berdik acknowledges that it is common for a
supportive audience that expects victory to impact players in a beneficial manner,
motivating them to succeed, and altering their
3. Drake s New Album Called Views
Drake s new album called Views extremely caught my attention. This album had
numerous exceptional songs that I could easily relate to. I connected to this album
better than his other albums that were produced because this album had more
diversity. Views were the fourth studio album by Drake and were also supported
by five billboard singles: Hotline Bling , One Dance , Pop Style , Controlla and
Too Good , which are some my favorite tracks from this album. I absolutely love
this album because it shows the struggles that Drake has faced emotionally and it
gives us the ability to connect to it. First off, this album was exceptional because it
was different from any other album I have heard. I especially like the way drake
articulated this album and he is actually one of my favorite artists. He is one of my
favorite artists because when Drake raps or sings, he shows everyone basically
how he is feeling inside and he has a deeper meaning to it than just words. For
instance, people can relate to what he is saying because they can put themselves in
his shoes, or they are going through what he is singing about, which is why it
makes it easier for his album to be liked. For this reason, this makes him a different
rapper, because instead of rapping or singing about what the usual rappers rap about
such as getting money, partying, and getting girls, he actually expresses his real
emotions instead of covering them up and acting as if he doesn t care. Additionally,
he doesn t
4. The Relations Between China And China
In the 1990s during Bill Clintons presidency there was heavy tension between the
state of China and their disputed territory of Taiwan (Russell 1). The dispute came
about because China felt the island should be a part of China and not separate.
However, Taiwan was looking for independence (Russell 4). It an attempt to get
people on the side of Taiwanese independence their president, Lee Teng hui fought to
get a visa and eventually came to the United Statesfor a gathering at Cornell
University, where he attended college. This visit led to resentment from China
(Russell 1). The United States got involved in the China Taiwan issue by using their
military to provide stability in the region between China and Taiwan (Russell 8).
The United States during this time period had strong ties with both Taiwan and
mainland China, this was mainly because of the economic ties. Taiwan and China are
both two prominent trading partners of America (Russell 4). We import heavily from
both of these places, and Taiwan imports many American goods as well (Russell 4).
Therefore, it was in our best interest, economically, to keep peaceful relations with
both China and Taiwan.
Decisions made by the United States during this time had serious influences in this
region. The United States had a definite interest in maintaining stability in the region
and not aligning themselves with one side over the other. To try and sustain a balance
the United States intervened with the use of their military
5. Persuasive Essay About Pet Food
Fooled by Experts In this world full of the unknown, how can one say they know
everything? The answer is simple, people rely on experts; but what if the experts
have been lying to the netizens all along? Believe it or not, but this case has been
happening in the pet food industry for centuries. The pet foodindustry has been
fooling us for years. The pet food industry is something that is overlooked on and
due to this, the industry is not as tightly regulated than it should be. The pet food
industry needs to be more strictly regulated because what we are feeding to our pets
now are doing more harm than good. The leniency of the FDA towards pet food is
leading to the slow, unknowingly, deterioration of our pets. Further research is now...

Such chemicals and ingredients can lead to serious consequences, varying from
obesity and allergies, to even death. In an article written by Erica Shaffer, it was
reported that a couple sued a dog food manufacturer after the company s product
led to the ailment and the death of the couple s dogs (Shaffer [pg. 2]). Learning
these claims from multiple resources is enough to scare a pet owner, and these facts
show why it is significant for the federal agency of the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) to enforce a stronger regulation towards our fur babies food.
The FDA s mild attitude towards pet food is also leading to the increase of pet food
recalls. Well known pet food companies have experienced having to recall products
due to such things like chemicals in pet foods, and commonly, bacteria like
salmonella. This is a big problem, because not only are companies losing money,
but it is also an inconvenience and threat to pet owners. Salmonella is a germ can
that make us and even our pets sick ( Pet Food and Treats: Tips for Keeping People
and Pets Healthy and Safe from Salmonella [pg. 1]). With the FDA s leniency, their
actions can eventually even lead to our sickness. Due to the rising numbers of pet
food recalls, multiple websites have been created for solely tracking the different
recalls of pet food that has happened over the years. Those websites include

Q1. Expand on the rationale behind the Fiat and Chrysler strategic alliance.
In December 2008 Fiat witnessed such a drop off in its demand for cars that they
were forced to close for a month and lay off close to 50,000 workers. The company
indicated that amid the financial crisis it was looking for a partner who could give
the company the much needed push in the North American market. Fiat learned
about Chrysler s bankruptcy problems and put an offer on the table for the purchase
of Chrysler. Experts felt the alliance was part of Fiat s expansion and risk
diversification strategy. On Jan 20th, 2009 as part of its bankruptcy filing, Chrysler
announced its plans to establish a global strategic alliance with Fiat.

It was because of this agreement with the Government that Chrysler had to present a
long term viability plan to the US Government by the end of March 2009, which
needed to include the possibility of mergers with other companies. This is effectively
what allowed the Fiat/Chrysler alliance to take place.
Q2. Investigate what could be a hindrance to the realisation of the synergies of the
Fiat / Chrysler partnership?
In any merger, or acquisition for that matter, it can be extremely difficult. In a lot of
cases mergers often fail to produce the anticipated gains.
There are many difficulties of which both Chrysler and Fiat may encounter, such as;
1.One company s reputation can damage the profitability of the venture as a whole.
2.The coming together of different cultures.
3.Different business strategies.
4.Increase in management turnover.
5.Increase in bureaucratic and export costs.

The lost of confidence by investors have caused the regulatory repercussion in the
global markets. The best way to evade future crises and build business is not about
implementing regulation to avoid fraud, but to use smarter ethics as well in order to
maximize the company s integrity. However, ethical behavior must not be confused
with following the law or achieve what communities suppose is acceptable or
satisfactory.
Social norms and laws could ride contrary to what is ethical, for instance lets think
about apartheid and slavery. Ethics need to stand above and not manipulated by an
individual, who might conduce these ethics into a negative side, that can lead to
induce people to accept what is wrong just because the law says that.
Why are ethics important in global banking? Ethics are vital to maintain a level of
trust between the organization and their clients, to support the required independence
and providing suitable investment advice. These decisions result in the physical
transfer of financial assets, funds that can be withdrawal from BRIC equity markets
and reinvested in London property or commodities, in some types of cases. Banking

Jacob Riis was a journalist who made a big impact on society during the progressive

11. A Small Place By Jamaica Kincaid Analysis
In A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid, Kincaid explicitly describes the effects and
consequences that imperialism had on Antigua, while implicitly condemning
imperialism for the effects and consequences indigenous people endured through
allegory. Examining the results of imperialism in a cultural aspect provides a deeper
connection for the audience to fathom the struggle people of Antiguaexperienced.
Kincaid illustrates herself as the main protagonist who directly speaks to the audience
as if they are the ignorant tourist. Through the utilization of the second person
perspective, she immerses the reader emotionally, which through the experience
proves to be more captivating.
From the start of A Small Place, the author establishes an unsettling position for the
reader by using second person perspective to give the audience a personal experience,
The thing you have always suspected about yourself the minute you become a tourist
is true: A tourist is an ugly human being (Kincaid, 14). The act of being the tourist in
respect to Kincaid s statement is being unaware of the surroundings and people who
reside in this country you refer to as a paradise. She pushes the audience out of their
comfort zone to an unsettling acknowledgment of ignorance if you have traveled and
expressed these behaviors. The author presents the idea that the act of traveling with
the mindset that indigenous people are benefiting is a form of self justification rather
than reality. Kincaid acknowledges the audience s ignorance of the situation as an
institutional one that educated you to have this mindset. She describes this situation
the people of Antigua endured, as something you were not taught, which exonerates
your oblivious demeanor toward your surroundings,

Discuss how the provinces affected the general Roman economy.
The Romans fought wars and conquered areas such as Sicily, Tunisia, North Africa
and Egypt and these places a constant supply of grains and other goods that flooded
the Romans markets. As much as they enjoyed imported goods, Italy also exported
their wines and olive oils, which were locally produced. The Roman Empires were

there were the senatorial provinces and the imperial provinces. Therefore, the
senatorial provinces were governed by former consuls and praetors who were called

Companies test on animals to provide data that they can use to protect themselves
when they are sued by injured consumers even though some courts have ruled that the

unreliability of animal tests allows companies to put virtually any product on the

rather than the actual test results to support the claim that they are conscientious. In
most cases, companies settle out of court, preferring to pay off the injured consumer
rather than bring the unreliability of their testing practices to light. In some cases,
courts have ruled in favor of the injured consumers. In the end, animal tests protect no

Tradition gives way to the new era. Saying I do before saying, We found our new

15 to 44 years of age first lived with a man to whom they were not married

change in trend becomes obvious (Grinberg). There are many reasons why marriageis
no longer the next big step for America s unwedded couples. Before today s couples

couples who desire to wait to marry until they can afford their dream weddings but

23. The Columbine Massacre
The Columbine Massacre Were They Pushed or Did They Jump What would drive
two seemingly normal high schoolers to try and slaughter everyone they went to
school with? Was it the bullying, angst or video games and movies? Or none of the
above. As we examine what led up to one of the worst domestic terrorist acts in
American history I think we ll that find Eric Harris and Dylan Kleboldweren t your
average teenagers. In my opinion they were cold blooded killers who had every
intention to take as many lives as they could. At approximately 11:10 on April 20th
1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold went to their high schooland carried out a
coordinated attack, killing twelve students and one teacher before eventually turning
the guns on themselves.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He makes statements like The pain multiplies infinitely. Never stops. Yet I m here,

last pages in Dylan s journal was him and Eric s plan for the massacre and it goes
like this. Walk in, set bombs at 11:09, for 11:17. Leave. Drive to clemete Park.
Gearup. Get back by 11:15. Park cars. Set car bombs for 11:18. Get out, go to
outside hill, wait. When first bombs go off, attack. Have fun! Dylan s journals
start off very suicidal and progressively more hateful until him and Eric are on the
same level and were set on completing their final mission. During their senior year
Eric and Dylan starred in a short film for a class called Hitmen for Hire where they
foreshadowed themselves walking around Columbine in their trenchcoats and talked
about relocating other students. Even though in the film they talk about killing other
students that are bullying another student, who hires Eric and Dylan for twenty
dollars a day to protect him, Eric says you know we can t have weapons on school
grounds. There are too many similarities to think that this short film for a class was
simply just that, I believe at this time (December 1998) the duo had a plan and they
were intentionally foreshadowing it through this
24. Cause And Effects Of Drought
Drought is a form of a natural abiotic stress in plants that affects plant growth and is
characterized as one of the most widespread environmental stresses occurring
globally (Ekmekci, Y., Kalefetoglu T., 2005). It occurs when there is an absence of
rainfall for a particular period of time. This happens when atmospheric conditions
such as climate change causes extensive loss of water in soil content that damage and
injure plant structure and disruption in physiology (Jaleel, C., P. Manivannan, A.
Wahid, M. Farooq, R. Somasundaram and R. Panneerselvam, 2009). Drought can be
considered as water deficit and desiccation (Ekmekci, Y., Kalefetoglu T., 2005). Water
deficit occur when loss of water is moderate and the stomata of the plants closes
resulting to a limitation of gas exchange (Jaleel, C., et.al., 2009). Desiccation occur
when there is an extensive loss of water that results to a disruption in the plant s
metabolism, cell structure and eventually to the termination of enzyme catalyzed
reactions (Ekmekci, Y., Kalefetoglu T., 2005). Some effects of drought in plants are
as follows; decreased in cell enlargement and growth which reduces the height of
plants, decline in the water content of leaves, turgor loss, altered cholorophyll (a b)
pigment concentrations and carotenoids which reduces tissue concentrations of a
plant and disturbs or disrupts biochemical processes such as photosynthesis,
respiration, ion uptake, translocation and nutrient metabolism (Jaleel,
25. Pacific Railway Act Research Paper
The Pacific Railway Act passed in 1862. Which paved the way for two companies
the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific to construct a railroad that would connect
Omaha, Nebraska to the west coast. With this type of expansion the railroad became
the easiest way of moving westward. Since this was the easiest form of
transportation of goods the Western settlement increased and more railroads were
built. It was also the easiest way to get goods to the market. This meant that the
settlement revolved around where the different locations of the railroad depots would
be built. Which in turn made the residents move their markets and ranches closer to a
railroad so they could transport their goods. In turn the placement of the railroad

26. Arab Refugee Crises And The Balkan Wars Of The 1990s
The world is growing at such an intensely fast rate that it can t keep up with itself.
Looking at countries like China and India that are just piling on top of each other,
one gets a bit of an understanding of just how cram packed the world has become.
With one billion people in India, a region half the size of the U.S, we can see that
this could create a problem if there was a disaster, or an internal issue in that nation.
Europeis now faced with one of the biggest influx of people that it has seen since
the Balkan wars of the 1990s.( Anne Paludan: Refugees in Europe) Failed states
have created such terrible living conditions of fear and unlivable habitats that
people are desperate to get to safe locations. Why is there such a large number of
refugees, and how can Europe create a system through its politics to combat the
issues that come with a mass influx of refugees? Are terrorists the ones to blame for
all Syrian refugeecrises? Does Islamic radicalism play a key roll in the reason for
war in the Middle East, or are westerners ignorant to the reasons behind these
current crises? Are there any systems that can be put in place to help migrants and
refuges, or is the key to Europe s on going sustainability going to be the refusal and
removal of refugees? These questions are not easy to answer and have to be looked
at with open eyes, and sensitivity to such a complicated issue. However, the terror of
hundreds of thousands of people on the move, risking their lives across

The Niagara Movement wanted to change what the ratification to the 13th
Amendment did not. Led by W.E.B. Dubois in 1905, this movement sought to end
discrimination and show that even though they were legal free, this freedom was a
new kind of slavery. The Niagara Movement had one simple main demand for
American; that wanted to have ... every single right that belongs to a freeborn
American, political, civil, and social... (LP 75). This is something that they had
been denied for so long. Many of the rights we have today (some which we don t
always use or realize how important they are) African Americans had to fight for. For
example; the right to vote, no separation or discrimination, to have whatever color
friends they want, for laws to apply
28. The Starry Night
The Starry Night The starry night is painting by Vincent van Goh done in 1889.
The painting is inspired by the night view. It is a painting that was done by oil on
canvas just as the way traditional paintings are done. However, the starry night was
not painted at night as expected. It was done during day using van Goh s
imagination. According to van Goh, he always expressed his liking to draw a
painting portraying the sky at night. Van Goh s works on the starry nightwas inspired
by the night skies and surroundings of the asylum where he was receiving treatment
due to breakdowns (Brooks, 2012). The title of the painting, the starry night , goes
hand in hand with what the painting tries to describe. The painting reflects
emotions and expressiveness. A group of curvy black lines that seem to originate
from a point dominate the left side of the painting. There is a town on the lower
right that extends up to the hills. As the title goes, the painting is set at night. The
sky has been done in a swirl that bursts out in to blues, greens and gentle yellow.
The center part of the painting is the moon which is shown by a yellow dot. The
dark lines that stark up on the right side tend to stand for a plant. The town is marked
by small dots on the houses perhaps showing electricity lights or lamp lights sealing
the fact that painting setting is night time. The objective of the painter was to depict
the night time in a small town. The painting has its kind of mystery because of

30. Social Darwinism And Charles Darwin s The Time Machine
The Time Traveler s theory was very similar and clearly reflected Darwin s main
points. One of the real social hypotheses of the late nineteenth century adjusted
Charles Darwin s speculations on development to legitimize nineteenth century social
stratification between the rich and poor. In Origin of the Species, Darwin contended
that diverse conditions supported the propagation of those species whose changing
qualities most appropriate them to survive; their posterity, thus, would be better
adjusted for the new condition, as would their posterity, et cetera.
Social Darwinism as often as possible manhandled this idea of characteristic
determination. Evolution does not prompt the perfectibility of any species, as is for
the most part seen, yet to the expanding flexibility and many sided quality of an
animal categories. Social Darwinism overlooked this thought and battled that the
social condition was much similar to the vicious common habitat, and that the
individuals who succeeded were organically bound to do as such and to proceed in
their walk to human flawlessness. =
Wells spots the gaps in this contention. In The Time Machine, the wonderful Eloi
appear, at in the first place, to be the ideal tenants of a propelled age. However, the
Time Traveler soon finds that the progressions of human progress have enfeebled the
Eloi; with no squeezing prerequisites for survival, they have turned out to be feeble,
sluggish, and moronic. While their human progress has
31. The Theme Of Blindness In Cathedral By Raymond Carver
As we gain knowledge we gain understanding, giving us a different view of the
world. In the story, Cathedral by Raymond Carver, the author takes us through a day
in the life of a husband who is forced by his wife to meet and entertain her longtime
friend Robert who happens to be blind. The husband is not exactly excited by this
visit. The author illustrates the characters development beginning as apprehensive
and jealous, transitioning to more of an uncomfortable feeling, and finally ending
with acceptance as the husband is put into a situation where he gains a new
understanding of the blindman. He ends the story with his eyes closed and a mind
open to a new view of the world.
As the story begins, the author seems to portray the main character as apprehensive
and jealous. As he narrates the story, the husband opens with a blunt statement, his
being blind bothered me. (34) It immediately gives the reader the impression that he
was very upset about the situation he was put in. The husband seems more concerned
with the fact that the man is blind and states later that his idea of blindness came from
movies. (34) Giving once again an example of how uncomfortable and really
uninformed he was. The husband has a stereotypical view of what a blind person
should be like and sticks to those thoughts throughout the beginning of the story. This
gives the impression that he feels that blindness is more of a handicap and make
Robert unrelatable. He also seemed to be jealous of the
32. Ethan Frome And Age Of Innocence Similarities
Freedom is a myth. It is nonexistent in this world. It does not matter how financially
able someone is, liberty is not to be an option for anyone. This is demonstrated
perfectly in book Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton and the movie The Age of
Innocence, an accurate adaption of the novel Edith Wharton wrote. Ethan Fromeis
about a man who falls in love with his wife s cousin, Mattie Silver. The Age of
Innocenceis about a man, Newland Archer, who falls in love with his wife s cousin,
Countess Ellen Olenska. The stories sound very similar, but in detail, these stories
have differences as well. Ethan Frome and The Age of Innocence portay characters

In Ethan Frome, cucumbers was the main icon in the novel. With Zeena, it was
always shown as withering and dry. Zeena always went to bed as soon as she had
her supper, and the shutterless windows of the house of the house were dark. A
dead cucumber vine dangled from the porch like the crape streamer tied to the
door for a death (Wharton 45). This represented how Ethan s love for Zeena was
demolished, if there was any love to demolish. Mattie, on the other hand, was
always compared to a new and lively pickle. She set the lamp on the table, and he
saw that it was carefully laid for supper, with fresh doughnuts, stewed blueberries
and his favourite pickles in a dish of gay red glass (Wharton 72). This showed how
Ethan felt young and sprightly with Mattie. There was even a scene in the book
where the cat, Zeena s most loyal companion, jumped on the table and broke the
pickle dish, which was a wedding gift to Ethan and Zeena. The cat, profiting by
this unusual demonstration, tried to effect an unnoticed retreat, and in doing so
backed into the pickle dish, which fell to the floor with a crash (Wharton 74). The
scene demonstrated that Zeena and Ethan s marriage (the pickle dish) was
devastated, no longer can be stable. In The Age of Innocence, flowers were a
significant figure as well. While Newland and May were betrothed, Newland
would send lilies to May every morning. When Ellen and Newland became more at
ease with each other, he started sending her flowers as well. However, Ellen
received yellow roses, not lilies. Both symbols showed how both Ethan and
Newland are growing their love for their wives cousins, but when looked closely,
they both gave an entirely different meaning. The cucumbers presented how Ethan s
affection to Zeena was vanished and was with Mattie. This varies from Newland s
dilemma because he still loved May and Countess Olenska, but

35. Summary Of Samson Occom
In Samson Occom s collective writings, Occom uses his religious convictions to
explain a certain liberation that spirituality can provide Native Americans in an age of
tension with white colonists. Occom s specific teachings of the contemporary
Calvinist interpretations of Christianity provide an outlet through which Native
Americans can both embrace their native cultures and seek redemption through what
Occom believes is the only true path to salvation. Additionally, Occom, through his
connections with white colonists, attempts to provide a sense of political liberation
to Native Americans by giving them the same educational opportunities. Overall,
Occom s religiosity manifests itself in a way that both attempts to free Native
Americans, while also often yielding conflict with the white Calvinists with which
Occom interacts. Occom, born in 1723 and a member of the Mohegan tribe,
experienced much of the colonial infiltration and erosion of tribal territories in New
England and, through his religious convictions and connections with white colonial
religious leaders, specifically Eleazar Wheelock, attempted to stymie this conflict
by reviv[ing] spirituality among aggrieved Native communities (3). Presumably,
Occom believed this revival would shape the Native Americans into more cohesive
members of the new society forced upon them by promoting political autonomy and
spiritual well being (4). To support this assertion, it is necessary to analyze Occom
s sermons, starting with perhaps his most famous sermon, his Sermon at the
Execution of Moses Paul, which he gave in 1772. The preface to A Sermon,
Preached at the Execution of Moses Paul, an Indian, which was retrospectively
added to written iterations of the sermon, includes a description by Occom of why
he chooses to publish his sermons. He says that, while typical preachers speak in a
very high and lofty stile, so that the common people understand but little of [their
sermons], Occom delivers his sermons in what he believes to be a more common,
plain, every day talk that people can t help understanding (177). Additionally, he
specifies his statement with the qualifications that poor Negroes may fully

37. Cherry s Summarization And Appropriate Attention
In 1953, Cherry published several experiments on recognition of speech. This was
the first work to address the cocktail party problem, how humans are able to
recognize what one person is saying while others are talking simultaneously (Cherry,
1953, p. 976). Cherry s research introduced a problem of recognition: how humans
separate speech. This research played a role in Broadbent s early theoryfor a
mechanical model for attentionand immediate attention. Broadbent designed a
mechanical model to express the verbal theories of attention and immediate memory.
Cherry s findings are reflected in the immediate memory model. An experiment

The phenomenon that people can only attend to one voice at a time, unless a

and Cowan s study on Cherry s cocktail party phenomenon by Moray and it was
done casually. According to findings from Cherry s experiments, people should
only identify their name in trials when their attention has shifted to the irrelevant
auditory channel (Wood Cowan, 1995, p. 255). To test the attention shifts caused
by hearing one s name Wood and Cowan created a computerized speech reading
630 words. The attended ear received 330 words read by a monotone female voice
and the unattended ear received 300 words read by a monotone male voice. All of
the participants received the attended message but were divided into three groups
for the irrelevant channel. The control group received words but no name. The two
experimental groups received a message where their name was said at either 4 or 5
minutes. All subjects whose name was said at 4, or 5, minutes received a yoked
participants name at 5, or 4, minutes (Wood Cowan, 1995, p. 256). Participants were
instructed to repeat every word they word in their right ear as soon as they heard it
and to ignore the left ear, which were meant as distracters. When the attended ear
stopped receiving words, participants were told to complete a questionnaire (p.

experimented on. Many of these doctors used their authority to justify the means of

experiments were conducted for the supposed benefit of the German army.
Experiments conducted by Nazis were inhumane and go against the basic human
rights that should never be compromised.
Although the experiments done on humans during WW2 were absurd, there are some
factors that were beneficial. Some of the data recorded by the Nazis are used in many

Thousands of lives were ended far too soon due to the crimes against humanity. Every
experiment, although each one was unique, resulted in the same way; death or

prisoners that they would ultimately betray. In conclusion, human experiments done
by Nazis were dreadful to the victims of the crimes.

39. Thinking, Fast And Slow By Daniel Kahneman
This distinctive book called, Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman, is one
of very few exquisite readings I ve completed so far. Daniel Kahneman is a
psychologist in Princeton University, and due to his research, he won a Nobel
Prize in 2002 in economics. In the beginning of his book, he speaks of our
cognitive System 1 and System 2 ways of thinking. System 1 generates feelings,
impressions, and memory. It is very instinctive, automatic, and is considered quick
thinking. System 2 on the other hand, is alert during complex problem solving,
while dealing with facts and knowledge, and is attentive while working with
difficult calculations. For example, a problem such as 24 x 13, this takes more time
and knowledge to figure out (System 2), rather then recognizing an emotion from
face expressions (System 1). When System 1 is strained, your System 2 steps in to
help you process through that specific instant. Now aside from the psychological
portion of this book, Mr. Kahneman divulges about a consolidated economic analysis
with elemental intuitions from the psychological perspective; such as, luck and skill,
overconfidence, risks in the stock market, factors of success and the decision making
process. This book is overall concluded with the understanding of behavioral
economics, which is the social and cognitive components on economic decisions that
are defined by individuals and have consequences that reflect from making those
decisions and taking those risks.
40. The Assumption Proposal
Hamilton s economic policies, although created to help the country as a whole, are
directed to benefit the rich and mainly northern states, and not the poorer more
southern states. Separating the rich from the poor will only divide the country more,
and create more economic problems for the poorer parts of the new country.
Hamilton s assumption plan and establishment of the Central Bank will only divide
the country into rich and poor parts and create economic and social tension. The
Assumption Plan is Hamilton s belief that all of the state s debt, from the revolution,
should be taken on by the entire nation. In order to fix the national debt, Hamilton
wanted to pay back all states and national debts back in full, to once again have a

Southern Plantations would again have to fund Northern businesses, putting more
of a financial strain on the South than on the North. Putting a tax on whiskey hurts
the farmers who grow the grain that is the basis for whiskey. Many of the farmers
can barely afford to process the grain, let alone pay an additional tax on it. In
addition the farmers are having to take a financial hit for the Northern States who do
not process the ingredients for whiskey. Again this tax is only beneficial to the richer
northern states separating the rich from the poor once again. As for creating a
Central Bank, having a set standard for currency will allow all the states to interact in
commerce with ease and in moderate supply, keep the economy from falling into
recession. But if it there is a surplus, the value of money can drop and cause inflation
and recession. Although this would help the government financially, Jefferson and
many others opposed to Hamilton s ideas, because the bank was just another way to
make the rich richer, and the poor poorer. The constitutionality of it was questionable,
because the Constitution doesn t blatantly say the government has the power to
create private corporations. The establishment of the Central Bank was just another
hit to the poor, and another way to increase the

ABSTRACT: In this a fuzzy logic control technique has been proposed for power
quality improvement by using UPQC The UPQC is controlled to regulate the WF
terminal voltage, and to mitigate voltage fluctuations at the point of common
coupling (PCC), caused by system load changes and pulsating WF generated power,
respectively. In order to reduce the voltage fluctuations that may cause flicker , and
improve WF terminal voltage regulation, several solutions have been posed. The
voltage regulation at WF terminal is conducted using the UPQC series converter, by
voltage injection in phase with PCC voltage. On the other hand, the shunt converter
is used to filter the WF generated power to prevent voltage fluctuations, requiring
active and reactive power handling capability. The sharing of active power between
converters is managed through the common DC link. A customized internal fuzzy

Lions (A Descriptive Essay)
Majestic, noble, and brave, this famous iconic wild animal on the planet has
captivated the people since the beginning of time. They are most feared by other
animals thus, known as the king of the jungle no other than the lions. Member of the
genus Panthera, the lion is one of the big cats in the Felidae family. A lion s head and
body size average about 4.5 to 6.5 feet and tail of about 26 to 40 inches in length. A
lion also weighs about 265 up to 420 pounds and a size relative to a 6 foot human.
These mammals are also carnivores. Lions have always seen hunting in groups
called pride. While lions generally avoid a full grown elephant, lions still prefer their
preys large like the zebras, buffaloes, and giraffes. Poised as the top animal in the
ecological pyramid, lions have strong physical qualities, fascinating reputation, and an
unfortunate decreasing number of population.
Without a doubt, lions have strong physical qualities. One, in particular, is the lions
amazingly strong forepaws. So strong and powerful that a lion could kill a hyena
in just one blow. Also, a lion s muscular body has less bone mass compared to the
other animals, which makes it responsible for its graceful movements. Each of their
paws is equipped with soft pads, making them soundless as they move. A lions eyes
are well adapted in low light, an advantage for them to go hunting at night. A
44. Frank Norris s Mcteague
Since the beginning of time, humans like animals, possess certain innate behaviors
that both are naturally born with. For example, animals are born, taken care of and
spend their life making sure they have enough food in order to survive and in the
end, reproduce. Similarly, humans also possess a natural instinct to survive,
consume, and reproduce in order to keep this on going cycle alive. The comparison
between humans and animals at time may disturb certain people due to the
simplification and degradation of the human race. However, it is this naturalistic
view in life that certain individuals believe should not be shielded from the public in
order to protect people and instead, believe it is necessary to educate as many people
possible in the reasoning and acceptance of mankind s innate actions. The novel
McTeague, written by Frank Norris, is a book that demonstrates an individual s
natural behaviors and desires which continues to be carried out by people today just
as it has been since the beginning of time. It is through McTeague, that Frank Norris
illustrates mankind s naturalistic behavior that not only grabs the attention of the
readers but infuriates the public as well.
Benjamin Franklin Norris, otherwise known as Frank Norris was born on March 5,
1870 in Chicago, Illinois. Throughout his life, Frank Norris attended school in Paris,
the University of California, and Harvard University which would later benefit him
by establishing relationships which would
45. Stephanie Guttenplan Influence
No doubt, we all have wondered what inspires an artist. When looking at their
paintings or drawings, we often put aside the emotions and inspirations to pieces,
simply because that information isn t given. Because everyone has their own unique
way to express themselves, it makes us wonder. Whether it is a drawing, a musical
work or an invention of some sort, each piece has a connection and emotional tie.
These emotions translate into the quality of the work. Mentioning that showing work
to others, whether it is a song or poem, can significantly improve it. Sometimes other
people may see mistakes that the artist may not have through their cloud of emotional
attachment. Stephanie Guttenplan is no different; she describes her work as a visual
46. A Guide For Conducting Business Essay
A Guide for Conducting Business in Japan
Abstract
This paper analyses the various aspects of Japanese culture. It describes the
differences and distinctiveness of Japanese culture. The main objective of this paper
is to understand how Japanese conduct their business. Then the culture of Japan is
analyzed according to the models suggested by Edward Hall, Hofstede. In the end
there is a cultural profile which guides an American while dealing with Japanese
during any business. Due to the technical advancement in Japan many countries are
willing to conduct their business in Japan. This paper tries to guide an American
during intercultural communication with Japanese. The definition of intercultural
communication by Samovar and Porter (2004) emphasizes that a person s perception
of the world around him/her is deeply entrenched in the system of symbols that his or
her culture uses to make sense of the world.
Introduction
I think that the Japanese culture is one of the very few cultures left that is its own
entity. They re just so traditional and so specific in their ways. It s kind of untouched,
it s not Americanized. Toni Collette
Due to the development in science and technology we find Japan to be a place much
sought out while conducting business. As quoted by Toni Collette the Japanese
culture is very unique and has many differences with other nations. So it is important
for a person who wants to conduct any kind of business with Japanese to understand
their culture.
47. The Historical Context of Ridda, Shura, and Shi a Essay
Shura is an Arabic word for consultation and it is this that forms part of the four
cardinal principles (human dignity justice and equality) in the Islamic organisation
of social policys and politics. It was a method that the pre Islamic tribes of the
Middle East would use to make major affecting decisions. The term Shura is
mentioned several times in the holy Quran and is also used as a name in parliaments
of Muslim majority countries. Consultation applies to the choice of the head of state
as well as to all the decisions executed by the state. (Waines, 2009)
Muslims believe that all decisions should be made by and for society by the Shura of

During the Caliphate of Ali there was much fighting and eventually the Muslim

gained control via inheritance or force. Most of today s Islamic countries have at
least some aspects of their government or ruling management based on Shura. In
Egypt the upper house of their parliament is known as the Shura council. Saudi

Shi ism was not brought into existence only by the question of the political

was of course of great importance). The problem of political succession may be said
to be the element that crystallized the Shi ites into a distinct group, and political
suppression in later periods,

The usual way that race labels are applied in the United States in everyday parlance
and in government statistics fail to capture a phemenon poised to reshape how race is
actually lived in America: the increase in multiracial marriages and births, which
almost certainly will lead to more blended populations in future generations. As this
trend continues, it will blur the racial fault lines of the last half of the twentieth
century. The nation is not there yet. But the evidence for multiracial marriages and
multiracial individual identity shows an unmistakable softening of boundaries that
should lead to new ways of thinking about racial populations and racerelated issues.

And race divisions, especially between whites and blacks, have historically been far
less permeable. So the blending of today s new racial minorities through multiracial
marriage is breaking new ground.
Multiracial marriages have been rising dramatically. In 1960 (before federal statistics
enumerated Hispanics and before the 1965 legislation that opened up immigration to
more countries) multiracial marriages constituted only 0.4 percent of all U.S.
marriages. That п¬Ѓgure increased to 3.2 percent in 1980 and to 8.4 percent in
2010. More than one in seven newlywed couples are now multiracial.
Amid this overall increase, the propensity to marry out of one s racial or ethnicity
varies. Among recently married whites, 17 percent were married to someone of
another race, but for Hispanics and Asians, more than four in ten recent marriages are
multiracial. Among minorities, blacks continues to have the lowest prevalence of
multiracial marriages, a legacy of the anti miscegenation statutes that persisted in 16
states until 1967, when the Supreme Court declared them unconstitutional in the
landmark Loving v. Virginia decision. It was only after this ruling in the post civil
rights environment that black multiracial marriages began to rise noticeably, but
among recent, typically younger marriages involving blacks, nearly three in ten were
multiracial marriages,

American Musicals
From the American Dream to the Rock Opera . 1950 to 1978 were the hopeless
years for the musical. American musical theatre had been showing signs of
exhaustion. This most seemingly illogical of genres carries its own ideological
project . Before this, musicals not only demonstrated singing and dancing; they were
about singing and dancing, explaining the importance of that experience. Not only
did musicals give the most intense pleasure to their audience but also supplied a
good reason for that pleasure. With the increase in number of radio stations and the
availability of portable radios, recorded music was in high demand; people wanted
more.

Today s audiences can almost find it abhorrent. They are socially aware and informed
of current affairs. Musical theatre has advanced technically, intellectually, is
universally popular and overflowing with cultural relativism. From 1960 onwards,
Broadway came to rely more on its directors, librettists and lyricists. The emphasis
of importance being on the directors. Tom O Horgan, Gower Champion, and most
of all, Bob Fosse gave the period some of its sustained achievements. These
musicals are one of the most collaborative of art forms. Actors no longer had
chunks of dialogue interspersed with musical interludes. The musical became
seamless, with characters singing when their emotions became too overbearing for
speech. The songs encouraged the musical to move forward and not stand still
whilst the star sang their showstopper! Stephen Sondheim advocated the
conceptual musical . He subordinated every aspect of the work to his personal
vision. As a result increasing intellectualised musicals confronted audiences that
had frequented the theatre as a means of escape. When a writer is responsible for
the book and the lyrics as, for example, Oscar Hammerstein and Alan Jay Lerner,
were that writer may be more able to regularly address the same concerns than a
composer lyricist can. Nonetheless, Sondheim has managed to create a body of work
that is clearly of a piece, despite the fact that many of the shows
51. Grendel Vs Beowulf Research Paper
Beowulf and Grendel, the main characters of their self titled books, are two very
different, yet very similar characters. Beowulf, whose real author is unknown, is
said to be one of the oldest pieces of English literature ever and is translated from
Old English by Seamus Heaney, tells the tale of a valiant member of the Geat people
who travels across the sea to help the Danes and King Hrothgar battle Grendel, a
vicious monstrosity who is ravaging the local area. Grendel is written by John
Gardner and tells the same tale of Beowulfs courageous attempt, while presenting
the story from Grendel s point of view, a new spin on the age old story. Point of
view plays a huge role in these stories, with Beowulf being read by a omniscient
narrator whose god like abilities seems to allow them to bounce around from the
past, present, and future. Grendel, on the other hand, is completely in first person
and rarely ventures away from that point of view, only when Grendel seems to have
the ability to read people s actions and minds without... Show more content on

The concentration camps that were run by the Nazis during World War II can
easily be labeled as one of the most grotesque examples of cruelty in the entire
world. The people that were sent to these concentration camps were treated as less
than human by the power hungry leaders of the camp. As we have all learned in
history classes throughout our lives, the conditions of these camps were blatantly
abhorrent, and it is a surprise that people made it out of these camps alive. In his
book, Man s Search for Meaning, Viktor E. Frankl uses his experiences in a
concentration camp as an example to his readers that life holds a potential meaning
no matter what condition a person is in. In the two parts of his book he analyzes his

The way Frankl described it made it seem as if it was one of those situations where a
person responds in a way that is not socially acceptable, but they cannot help it. In
this case, the inmates found humor in the sense that they were in disbelief that these
things were happening to them and did not know how to react. The other emotion
that was immediately felt by the inmates entering the camp was curiosity because
they did not know whether they were going to live or die. Living in the camps for the
first few days filled the inmates with questions about whether or not they would
survive and how they would go about doing so. Also, almost every inmate justifiably
entertained thoughts of suicide, but according to Frankl there was little point in
committing suicide, since, for the average inmate, life expectation, [...] was very poor
(18). Additionally, the first days and weeks in a concentration camp filled the inmates
with fear and disgust, since they were not accustomed to seeing humans being treated
in such disturbing manners. Frankl explains that all the campers slowly became
acclimated to their situations once they realized that a man can get used to anything,
[without knowing] how (18). This observation by Frankl is imperative to his own
survival in the concentration camps, and it emphasizes that idea that in order to
survive the abhorrent conditions of the camp one must forget their former life and
realize that they needed to survive the present

including China. China is one the main country that the United States does
business with. Walmart began in China in 1996, when they opened the first
Walmart Supercenter and Sam s club in Shenzhen. Walmart was planning an
expansion which was announced in 2005. This expansion was a joint venture with
a company that has close ties to Chinese officials. The head of the company was

had to change their names due to a transaction. About 8,500 stores changes their

company would be able to sell more items that are made in their own country. The

Peoples perception of self efficacy ascertains their sensations, thoughts and
motivations about themselves. Influences of these beliefs are categorized in four
sections: Cognitive, Motivational, Affective and Selection Process. He also
underlines that the strongest way of composing a forceful perception of self
efficacy is possible with implementing mastery experiences. Hence, this study will
focus to develop a curriculum includes more educational and practical activites can
be exercised during the CET 301 course to gain teacher candidates self efficacy on
both creating educational software and using computer. According to Compeau
Higgins (1995, p.192), Computer self efficacy refers to intuition of a person about
his capacity on using computer. In one of the researches which explored the
teachers self efficacy of their computer using skills conducted by Paraskeva , Bouta
Papagianni (2008), it is revealed that the teachers who have high computer self
efficacy are tend to apply and use their technological abilities in their classes for
schoolteaching. In parallel, Albion(1999) proposes that self efficacy of teachers about
the usage of computer for education is straight connected to their application.
Developing educational software is an essential ability which has to be possessed by
CEIT students.
56. Nike Case Study
Nike s Social and Experiential Value Creation
Nike over the years has been the leader in athletic shoe designs and remains there
today. It is the reason that Nike is differentiated from its competitors and provides
experiential and social value for its customers. In fact, Nike has put so much
emphasis in design and marketing behind their shoe trends that Nike shoes are among
the most counterfeited product in a $461 billion market according to a report by
ABC news. (Add why that is important?)
For further analysis on Nike s design oriented focus, we will be looking at the product
line of Nike Jordan Shoes. The Air Jordan shoes are consumer focused shoes that
provide trendy designs associated with the growing basketball culture in North
America, started by basketball icon Michael Jordan. In 1985, Peter Moore who
was working for Nike as a lead designer wanted to create a product that would relate
to individuals and provide an emotional and social connection to pure design by
relating it to a player that revolutionized the game of basketball. Many argue that
this was the shoe to start the current fashion culture of athletic shoes. Michael
Jordan was drafted third by the Chicago Bulls in 1984, and in commemoration for
that event, the Air Jordan I was created with a striking balance of red, white, and
black representing the Chicago Bulls. With the famous Nike Swoosh logo on its
design, Michael Jordan wore the shoes in every game that he played that season
getting paid $2.5 Million by Nike for an endorsement deal. It was the start of a
design revolution by Nike and was one of the most attractive shoes at the time. In
the next 33 years till 2017, the Nike Air Jordan has made Nike a fortune worth over
2.25 billion, through their excellent design and significant part of culture and
society. Today individuals are a part of the #Jumpman movement with over 13
million followers on Instagram, Nike has used their ability to market their
infamous design of the Jordan logo (a man jumping with a basketball) to create
social value and create an inclusive social movement of athletes all around the
world. This is what Nike is using to grow revenue and according the end of year
fiscal 10K report that Nike filed with the SEC, they

In relation to the absolute power of the sovereign, the act of individuals giving up
their rights deprives them of judging or criticizing the actions of the ruler.
However, further in the book Hobbes accepts that there are some limits to what a
sovereign can and can not do. For instance, if the sovereign fails in giving
protection to individuals, it is said that they have the liberty to revolt, but revolt is
considered unjust. And Hobbes s justification for this is that a revolt will involve a
civil war, meaning returning to a state of war and to the absence of government. (
Hobbes: XVIII, 117). Another main argument by Hobbes is under what
circumstances a subject is able to raise his voice against the sovereign. By describing
