Raptor is a free to use, open source software suite generally designed to enable accounting within event-based systems, and specifically aimed at accounting within systems that handle authentication events such as the Shibboleth IdP, OpenAthens LA, and EZproxy. It has been developed by Cardiff University with support from JISC. This session will give an update on Raptor, including talking about the UK federation Raptor aggregator for federation-wide statistics.

Introduction to Raptor

Raptor is:
• Generic log-file parser for AuthN systems
• A single point to view usage information for AuthN systems
• Hierarchical in nature

Raptor was:
• Funded by JISC in the UK
• Built by Cardiff University
• Released (v1.0) in 2011

Why Raptor?

Institutions have a multiple AuthN systems
• E.g. Shibboleth IdP, OpenAthens, simpleSAMLphp, FreeRADIUS,
Radiator, EZProxy, etc etc

Institutions need:
• To see who is using what resources

Federations need:
• To prove value for money

Main goals of Raptor

Easy to install / configure
• Not intrusive to existing systems

• E.g. Librarians

Distributed systems produce different types of data like logs, events, and metrics. Collecting and processing these different types of data traditionally requires various tools that are difficult for developers and operations teams to maintain. Heka is a tool that can be used to intake, process, and output all these types of data using a single pipeline. It provides a standard way to handle logs, metrics and events, replacing multiple complex tools. Heka offers benefits like low resource usage, real-time analytics, and a consistent interface for developers to integrate monitoring data.

OOR Architecture - Towards a Network of Linked Ontology Repositories

(Presented at the OOR Conference Call on Friday 19th November 2010.) We propose a distributed OOR architecture consisting of simple APIs, ontology repository implementations conforming to these APIs and a registry of these repositories. Together these components create an OOR network that can be used to build services utilizing content from different ontology repositories. The approach is based on an observation that there are different kinds of use cases, ontologies, ontology service providers, etc., and therefore it may not be possible to implement a single OOR server that addresses all possible needs. We suggest that the OOR initiative should focus on APIs and enabling an ecosystem of ontology repositories, not on doing everything by ourselves. Test suites and baseline implementations for APIs are needed for validating API implementations on different ontology repositories and testing the APIs.

This document discusses OSGi subsystems, which allow bundles to be grouped and scoped. There are three main subsystem types: feature subsystems which group dependencies, application subsystems which scope bundles to avoid sharing, and composite subsystems for complex infrastructure. Subsystems can contain bundles directly or use repositories, and can be nested. The Apache Aries project is working to implement subsystems based on the OSGi Enterprise specification. A demo is available showing subsystems running on the Virgo kernel.

This document provides an overview and comparison of the Gluster and Ceph distributed storage systems. It discusses the history and architecture of each system. Both Gluster and Ceph were created in the 2000s as software-defined storage solutions and later acquired by Red Hat.
