OpenAthens product update

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Hello and thanks for joining us here today My name is Jon and I am the Commercial Director for OpenAthens. I work with the OpenAthens team so that we can create a product that meet your needs today, And a service fit for you tomorrow too. The conference theme is creating connections This morning I will share new developments that are available today – We have experts here to help answers any questions - As well as our future thoughts and plans.
  • #3 In this half an hour or so, I want to share some insight of what we do and why Discuss priorities for OpenAthens and IAM, Identity and Access Management, And share key plans from our product roadmap.
  • #4 But as I start I want to place OpenAthens in The broader scope of where and why we work. The information economy. A global, annual trade of 1.5 trillion US dollars. And while OpenAthens strives each day to improve authentication. We know we are small bricks or cogs in an industry that supports intelligent, informed decisions across the world.
  • #5 Just as each goal that Beckham scored contributed something more than a victory in each individual game. He saw each goal, each kick, as a brick in a cathedral. The concept of his priorities working for a greater good.
  • #6 At OpenAthens, We talk about removing barriers to knowledge, And connecting people to information. We want access to pubs and subs and mags, And Data and tools and apps: to be friction free. As does everyone who is here today.
  • #7 But technology continually evolves And has impact in unexpected places. Such change as seen in St Peters Square With mobiles Over the space of just eight years.
  • #8 We embrace that change and focus on A service with the end user at its heart. A triumvirate of trust – Publisher, librarian, end user - that is secure, And ensures quality; within licensed terms and is simple, consistent and easy to use.
  • #9 But do these priorities chime with yours? while you’re here today please share your thoughts and let us know what keeps you up at night and where we can work to serve you best.
  • #10 The title of our conference today Is creating connections. We have 3 major connectivity goals We want logging in to be simple and secure – on every site – by strengthening the ties between publisher and organisation for the benefit of the end-user: Better connections between publishers and institutions We want user data to be easy to manage, comprehensive and up-to-date: Easier connections to existing local directories And we want to establish trust – the trust required for any licenced subs; the trust that the information being used is the best available: Trusted connections between institutions, libraries and end users.
  • #11 So number one. Better Connections between publishers and institutions. But how? We have: Our publisher manifesto Our Cloud Service Provider Development A vision of plug and play resources and applications
  • #12 The publisher manifesto has 5 discussion points we have put forward to foster a debate. Read the copy in your pack and let us know your thoughts. We know the frustration inconsistency can cause, And NISO and the STM publishers association have started a joint initiative: to build Resource access solutions fit for the 21st century. RA21. It’s such a good idea I’m going to say it twice Resource access solutions fit for the 21st century - that’s what we want to deliver. We are part of that debate and have ideas and plans that will move this forward.
  • #13 One of whichis: Our cloud SP development – phase 1 and 2. Maybe our major and most exciting developments in the days and months ahead. Next week sees the release of our new dashboard for users of our software and federation. The simplification of setup and registration
  • #14 A simpler UI and streamlined work flow will make the set up process more straightforward and the management of metadata and certificates less challenging. Less confusing and faster workflows will help build a more accurate set of data for developers.
  • #15 But this is just a small step forward. Our goal is to increase the opportunities for publishers, platforms and apps to join the world of OpenAthens single sign on. This ‘Cloud SP’ – our working title – will remove the need to install and maintain software in these applications.
  • #16 OpenAthens will do the heavy lifting in the cloud. And using common standard APIS – Oauth and OpenID connect – securely pass the attributes to establish trust. Simplicity with security – and the chance for us to connect to a whole new range of publications. We want to bring down the barriers to access for the OpenAthens federation and ensure that time or esoteric skills do not stand in the way of new federation members. And these standard APIs bring UI tools and user experience frameworks that are recognised and commonly used on other sites. I cannot wait for the release of this development and I hope you are half as excited as I am as I speak.
  • #17 And for further into the future we have a vision of ‘plug and play’. A range of resources available with straightforward clicks and configuration for the knowledge manager. Consistency, simplicity with no need for constant to and fro with OpenAthens as the middleman. This simplicity needs an underlying infrastructure and network of rigour, discipline and consistency. It will take time – but we want to create a culture, a platform and a process that enables this sharing of consistent certification and metadata. We want to increase the range of applications that we connect with – Like ALMA, Google, Moodle, Apsire or TALIA But keep it simple too.
  • #18 Major Goal 2: Easier connections to existing local directories and data for administrators Local directory integration Custom SAML applications OALA – OpenAthens Local Authentication
  • #19 Next: We have built a simple bridge that connects directly to an existing user data base. Saving time and effort in the process – and opening up if needed - access to existing attributes within a directory to manage particular permissions within a licence. And we have a range of ‘flavours’ to enable this technology. ADFS is the most common. But library management systems– like SirsiDynix – can also be used to create single-sign-on credentials. Or SAML ready platforms such as Google can also be connected. Or our API provides the greatest flexibility. But we want to create more bridges, more connections. To KOHA systems, to Polaris, or via CAS – but we need to make a judgement where. Where will our investment have the greatest impact? Your thoughts will help guide us here, so, please let us know your thoughts.
  • #20 Onto ‘custom saml integration’ If you have a resource or application that sits within your network or institution - This could be a VLE – or a range of Google Apps - With simple steps you can connect this resource to your single sign on service. Remove more barriers to access and let your patrons in to the particular resources that they need with background validation. Our custom SAML integration allows you to connect to any compatible applications that you own or use.
  • #21 And we have OALA – OALA like Coca Cola – or OALA like Koala – either way this is our locally installed IdP. And although the recent focus of our efforts has been in the cloud, We remain committed to a locally installed IdP. We maintain a backlog of fixes and enhancements for OALA will overhaul the statistics package as part Of a comprehensive initiative over stats. We will devote the time required for a maintenance release in 2017 to make the fixes available.
  • #22 And our major Goal 3 – back to this triumvirate of trust. How to support The trust connection between institution libraries, publishers and end users. Branded authentication points/log-in experience Expanded redirector links Statistics
  • #23 This year we have developed an OpenAthens branded log-in box – or authentication point – for customers who want to own the single sign on point. Simple steps that can help put the end user at ease. By adding a logo or instructions unique for that instituion
  • #24 Next - The expansion of our redirector links. We have wrestled with the different URL syntax and entity Ids across the federations – and a lack of consistency has forced us to adopt a hierarchical approach when customers are within different federations. But for those URLs where the redirector can work we have seen the time that it can save, so We want to extend the redirector links to enable single URL access direct to target articles wherever possible. My colleague Andy Anderson is here to answer questions on the what and how of the redirector now – but we have raised this as a priority: More coverage of resources.
  • #25 But currently, our major time and effort – the collective wisdom of our development team – is devoted to improving our statistics. We want the data that we log – for publishers and libraries alike – to be processed securely and consistently and made available in a way that meets heightened expectations in a world of ’big data’. The reports and statistics will cover users, resources and accounts. We will create a user-interface that allows you to create, export and use data in a way that is tailored to your needs. We want to provide the information that supports engagement, and investment and the creation of a better experience for all. And as I said before, we want a common statistics and reporting platform that serves all our products – our hosted product, our local authentication product (OALA) and our service provider product. And this project has started on our roadmap now – and delivery expected in 2017.
  • #26 Our current plans and thinking as well as Our thoughts and projects for 2017. We run an agile project methodology based on: Customer input Continual development – in two week sprints And constant prioritisation as circumstances change
  • #27 On the go at the moment we have the Cloud SP as discussed And we intend for the new dashboard to be released November 15 Next Tuesday and though there is many a slip tween cup and lip our team in Bath are working on final preparation now Our access management customers will be able to log in and see the new management tool that we have built. And Statistics is on the go – with thanks to all our customers who shared their thoughts. Plus our continual round of enhancements and bugs - from customers, partners and our team - that we review Each fortnight before a sprint
  • #28 And on our planning board – where we estimate the size and scope of work – we have 3 major projects. The new local directory connections as discussed: KOHA – polaris – CAS – or more? The extension or our redirector links. And ‘password free log-in within a network’. How can we recreate a proxy-like experience for logged-in, validated users – that delivers security and stats – but without the barriers and bumps that prevent seamless user access.
  • #29 And within our ‘parking lot’ – a holding area of ideas and issues we have identified. We have a list of projects we want to do – given a world of unlimited resources and time. Improved monitoring, status alerts and communication International development OpenAthens LA evolution MyAthens and a basic access portal OpenAthens.net Things we know and want to deliver – but in a world of competing priorities things that need to fight to move up our agenda.
  • #30 And for those who want more details on work already done. Please go to OpenAthens docs and search ‘release’. A full list of what we’ve done is there, Explaining how to make things work for you.
  • #31 And now my time is drawing to an end. I’ve aimed to place the work we do each day in the context of our vision for a connected world. We want our roadmap to deliver Better connections between publishers and institutions Easier connections to existing local directories and data Trusted connections between institutions, libraries and end users
  • #32 And looking out into the future we want to part of the eco-system that builds a layer of trust around the individual. So that relationship between the individual, their institutions and the services they use is secure, trusted and accessible wherever they may be. Thank you for your time.
