CAD/CAM/CAE
Need of CAD/CAM/CAE
• To increase productivity of the designer.
• To improve quality of the design.
• To improve communications.
• To create a manufacturing database.
• To create and test tool paths and optimize them.
• To help in production scheduling.
• To have effective shop floor control.
CONTENTS
▶ Introduction to CAD
▶ Introduction & Application of CAM
▶ Introduction & Application of CAE
▶ Conclusion
Computer Aided Design
▶ Use of computer systems to assist in creation, modification, analysis and
optimization of a design.
▶ Computer assistance, while a designer converts his or her ideas and knowledge,
into a mathematical and graphical model represented in a computer.
▶ software is used to create and design models.
Software Used: Autocad, Solidworks, Catia-V5
Uses of CAD
CAD is used to design a variety of different products for a variety of fields
such as:
● Factory Layout Design
● Electronics
● Automotive engineering
● Industrial Design
● Machinery
● Medical Design
Computer Aided Manufacturing
▶ Use of computers systems to plan, manage and control the
operations of a manufacturing plant through either direct or
indirect computer interface with plant’s production resources.
▶ Manufacturing support applications –Use of computers in
process planning, scheduling, shop floor control, work study,
tool design, quality control etc.
▶ Software Used: Mastercam, Solidcam, NX cam

CAE
▶ Computer-Aided Engineering is the use of computer software to solve
engineering problems with the improvement of graphics displays, engineering
workstations, and graphics standards.
▶ Engineers also use computer programs to estimate the performance and cost of
design prototypes and to calculate the optimal values for design parameters.
When combined with CAD, these automated analysis and optimization
capabilities are called computer-aided engineering (CAE)
▶ Software Used: Ansys Workbench,AnsysAPDL,Ansys Fluent.
Goals of CAE
The goals of computer-aided engineering (CAE) include:
▶ Improved product quality and safety
▶ Reduced engineering time, achieved through fewer design iterations
▶ Improved product functionality and usability
▶ Reduced number of prototypes, ultimately leading to their elimination in
many cases
▶ Reduced product cost
Scenarios and Applications of CAE
Mechanical Engineering
1. Finite Element Analysis (FEA):
▶ Structural analysis of a component’s behaviour under various kinds of
applied loads and supports e.g. Beam and Grid structures.
▶ Thermal analysis of a structure’s behaviour when it is subjected to heating
and cooling.
▶ Combined structural and thermal analysis.
▶ Fluid mechanics analysis of the flow of fluids, such as air, water, and
lubricants around the surfaces of an object. Pressure, fluid velocity, and
other factors can be determined
Scenarios and Applications of CAE (Contd)
Mechanical Engineering
2. MechanismAnalysis:
un
Mechanism analysis studies the behaviour of mechanical systems
st
dergoing motion. Typically, the geometry, mass, inertia, compliance,
iffness, and damping of the system’s components as well as the forces
and loads applied from outside the system must be defined. Equations
of motion are developed and solved. The results of the analysis may
include positions, velocities, accelerations, forces (applied, reactive, and
inertial), determination of equilibrium positions, and other computed
parameters.
