4. Company Profile
Raj WestPower Limited is a JSW group company. JSW
group is dealing mainly in steel, power, cement,Port &
services.
JSW Energy is having power project at Bellary (860
MW), ratnagiri (1200MW) & Barmer (1080 MW).
5. RWPL overview
RWPL is situated at Bhadresh near Barmer
(Rajasthan) and is at a distance of 28 km from Barmer
railway station.
This site is based on 8x135 MW lignite based thermal
power plant.
Lignite coal is used as a fuel.
Lignite source are lignite mines at kapurdi and jalipa
mines near the site.
The source of water for the plant is Indra Gandhi
Nahar Pariyojana (IGNP) Canal.
6. Water is taken by pipe line from IGNP at a distance of
180 KM.
Boiler ,Turbine & Generator are supplied for this plant
by Dongfong Electric Corporation (DEC) China.
This company supply the electricity to the Rajasthan
Government.
Power generated from the plant is evacuated through
220kv/400kv outdoor switchyard and connected to
RVPNL grid.
7. Thermal Power Plant
The thermal power station in the country are mostly
based on the following technologies.
Steam power plant:
A steam power plant continously convert the energy
stored in fossil fuels (coal, oil ,natural gas etc.)
The working fluid is water which is some time liquid
phase & sometimes in vapour phase during its cycle of
operations.
8.
9. Gas turbine power plants :
In a gas turbine power plant, air is used as working
fluid, this air is compressed by the compressor is
lead to the combustion chamber, where heat is
added to air ,thus raising its temperature.Heat is
added to the compressed air either by burning fuel
in the chamber or by use of air heaters. The hot and
high pressure air from the combustion chamber is
then passed to the gas turbine.

16. Main components of Thermal power plant ;
Boiler/ steam generator : It is a device which
converts chemical energy of fuel to heat energy.
Thus the water as a working fluid gains heat
energy.
According to Indian Boiler act 1923, Boiler is
closed pressure vessel having capacity exceeding
22.75 liters used for generating steam under
pressure. For these IBR norms were followed.
17. ESP : This is a device called Electro Static
Precipitator where the ash generated in boiler by
combustion of coal/lignite is collected and were
safely evacuated.
APH : This is a simple heat exchanger called Air
Pre-Heater. Here the residual heat in flue gas
(generated by combustion of fuel) after absorption
by the water is recovered by the
primary/secondary air supplied for combustion of
the fuel.
Fans/Blowers : This is a device which supplies air
to the combustor for combustion of the fuel.
18. Turbine : Steam turbine is a device where the heat
energy acquired in boiler is converted to the kinetic
energy when the steam expands over the moving
blades of a steam turbine rotor from higher pressure
to the lower pressure.
Condenser : It is a simple heat exchanger where the
expanded steam is allowed to condense to water by
heat rejection to the cooling water system.
Generator : This is a device where the rotational
kinetic energy is converted to electrical energy.
Pumps : It is a device where the kinetic energy is
converted to potential energy. Thus the water is
transferred from one elevation to the other elevation.

27. Cooling towers: Water required for condensing
steam in the condenser is cooled in the cooling
towers & circulated again to condenser.
De-sulpherising unit: Generally coal/lignite
contains sulpher; which during burning in the
combustor produces SOx & carry over to
ESP/chimney along with flue gas. When these
flue gas comes in contact with cold zone, these
SOx produces sulpherous/sulfuric acid &
corrosion of metalic parts starts. To subside this
desulperising units/lime handling units were
installed.
28. Water treatment plant: Here the de-mineralised
water required for steam generation is produced &
fed to the boiler.
Fuel oil handling plant: Required HFO or LDO are
procured & stored in the specified tank. As & when
required the fuel oil is send to burners for firing in
combustor.
Coal/Lignite handling plant: Required coal/lignite is
stored in the stock yard, reclaimed & processed up to
required size for feeding to the combustor.
Air Compressor unit: Compressed Air either service
air/ instrument air required for various application (i.e.
atomisation, instrument operations, etc.) is supplied
from this unit.
