Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. 3. Asking people how old they are will help me identify
the age for my target audience. According to the
chart above, 50% of the respondents are aged 13-17
years old.
4. Looking at the chart above, 90% of the respondents
do watch music videos and this is a good thing as it
means that they are more likely to watch my music
video. However, the other 10% do not watch music
videos and this could be because they like to
interpret songs in their own visual way.
5. The chart shows that 65% of the respondents watch
music videos either on their phone or iPad. This
generation relies heavily on technology; everyone is
always on their phone
6. The chart shows that the majority prefer to listen to
Pop music and this is a good thing because the song
I have chosen, which is Flashlight by Jessie J, is a pop
genre.
7.
8. What is your
personal favourite
music video?
All respondents picked different
music videos as their favourite,
however, the song that stood out the
most was Flashlight by Jessie J.
Therefore, I will have to do my
research based on this song and the
artist herself.
9. It shows that 85% of the respondents said that
music videos do have an influence on them. Music
videos put a visual meaning on the song and the
video is usually related to the lyrics of the song.
10. According to the chart above, it turns out that 55%of
the respondents would like to see some sort of a
narrative in a music video. Therefore, I will have to
create a narrative for the song “Flashlight”. The
narrative has to somehow relate with the lyrics of
the song. I want my target audience to connect with
the visuals as well as the song itself.
11.
12. Which artist’s music
video do you enjoy
the most?
According to the result I’ve got, the
majority enjoys Jessie J’s music
videos the most. Therefore, I will
have to look at all of her music video
to get inspirations for my music
video. For example, I will have to look
at her style, the narratives, themes,
etc.
13. Most respondents prefer a mixed coloured theme
music video. Therefore, in my music video, I will
have to include some dark colours and bright
colours.
