WHAT HAVE YOU
LEARNT ABOUT
TECHNOLOGIES
FROM THE PROCESS
OF CONSTRUCTING
THIS FILM?
QUESTION 6.
TECHNOLOGIES WE USED IN
PRODUCTION
Video Camera
The video camera we used when making our film is the Canon legria HFR26 borrowed from our schools IT Department as
wanted one that was easy to use, had a high quality picture and was compact so we could transport it to each filming location
easily. When filming, we put the camera on a tripod so each shot was stable, however we occasionally found that to achieve
certain angles we had to experiment with the height and angle of the tripod. For example, with our over the shoulder shots
we had to support the tripod on a table or bench and angle the camera manually. We also experimented with high angle shots
by taking the camera off from the tripod and putting it on shelves, or with low angle shots by putting it on the ground. We
found this ability useful when filming and enjoyed learning about how to use the camera to focus shots or adapting the angle
to create the look of a higher production value.
External Mic
We used an external mic when recording shots where sound was important, especially when filming outside. Audio such as
the train, garage door and dialogue needed to be clear and unaffected by surrounding noises such as wind or traffic, so found
the use of an external mic was useful for this.
TECHNOLOGIES WE USED IN
POST PRODUCTION
When considering editing software we wanted to use something that had a good variety of features that would be
useful to us, so we used Premier Pro.
This software allowed us to do things to our footage we found useful, such as muting sound if it was irrelevant to a
scene, or stabilising shots if our tripod had been on uneven ground.
It was also useful to crop footage, as irrelevant things could sometimes be in shot. This feature also helped us with
continuity, as we could cut out anything that was different in another shot. Colour adjustment was also a useful
feature, as it allowed us to adjust the tone of our shots to be darker, so it could reflect on the bleak themes and the
loss of hope of the protagonist.
Fade-ins was also useful when cutting to another shot, as it allowed the cut to be less abrupt. This worked well for the
cut in of the shot where the protagonists hands are tied.
WHICH PRESENTATIONAL
DEVICES HAVE YOU USED ON
YOUR BLOG?
I have used a variety of presentational devices on my blog, including essay style posts, as well as Prezi, and
PowerPoints which I have linked to via the presentation website SlideShare, or imbedded within Blogger.
Using PowerPoint has allowed me to turn posts into individual points separated by headings, making it easier
for the reader and more engaging. If images and screenshots are necessary then the PowerPoint Design Ideas
feature allows me to arrange them in a way to make it easier to annotate and draw the eye of the reader.
Prezi also allows me to separate ideas into points, and its design makes it appealing to look at while easily
informing the reader of ideas.
For longer posts such as ones based on research, I have used Blogger as its own post, which allows me to insert
images or links easily to go with text and forms my research in a simple essay style, allowing me to edit font
types to create headings and make it easier to read.
HOW HAS TECHNOLOGY
HELPED IN YOUR RESEARCH?
When doing research for ourThriller we found that the internet was a good resource, as it helped us learn about
conventions withinThrillers, specific stereotypes and what films conformed to them or challenged them, and
helped us decide how to take these ideas and use them within our ownThriller.Websites such as IMDB were very
helpful as they told us what we needed to know about a film, and also helped us findThriller films that we could look
more in detail at.
YouTube was also very useful, and I would often use it to find clips from films I wanted to study further, giving me
examples of scenes I could analyse and take inspiration from. For example, when analyse how camera work is used
within aThriller I watched a variety of videos of different film scenes so I could decide which I had made most notes
on and was able to study closely and analyse easily but efficiently.
HOW HAS TECHNOLOGY
HELPED IN YOUR PLANNING?
Technology has been useful when planning ourThriller, especially in terms of communication with each other.
We have used email, text messaging and social media to keep contact and discuss ideas, to plan shoots and
share draft ideas of work and make sure we are collaborating as a group. We also found our phone cameras
useful, especially when taking pictures of locations we could shoot in, props we could use and costumes our
actors could wear and presenting these ideas to the rest of the group.
