A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

1. Strengths
• I have previously used YouTube and so have had experience
with it and know how to effectively use it. YouTube was a big str-
ength because it enabled me to look at people’s film openings from
The past and gave me some good ideas for my film opening.
• I also know how to use Google as it is a search engine that I have
used for many years and have good experience of it. This meant that
whenever I needed to search for something I was effectively able to
find it with the help of Google.
• In addition to this, I have a good amount of experience with soft-
wares such as Word and PowerPoint which made it easier for me to
use them when I either needed to document something or to complete
something.
• Finally, I have had very good experience with Microsoft Outlook 365
as it enabled me to easily and quickly communicate with my teacher
throughout the whole process of the task to ask any questions or if I
ad any queries.
Weaknesses
• One of the main weaknesses was the fact that I had never
used Adobe Premiere Pro before and therefore didn’t know
everything you could do on it. This limited what I could actually
do on it which wasn’t very helpful.
• When starting the whole project, I was unfamiliar with the
software Blogger as I had never used it before which meant that
I didn’t particularly know how to structure my whole blog. I had
to ask for a bit of help when it came to blogger because I wasn’t
too sure how to use it at the start which put me behind a bit.
• On completing some of the tasks set, we had to use a program
called SlideShare. This was a weakness because I had never used it
before and therefore wasn’t as experienced as some of the people
in my class. Over time I gradually got better at using it.
• In addition to this, I had never used the software After Effects
which wasn’t very good because I was told it helped to stabilise
your shots if they were a bit shaky, however, I gradually became
better at it and found out how to stabilise some of my shots..
Opportunities
• Over the time of this project, I have now got better at using
Premiere Pro and learnt how to edit your clips properly so it looked
continuous. It also gave me the opportunity to get better with the
sounding of my film opening as I learnt how to overlap sound and
add voiceovers as well as transition effects.
• Throughout my experience of film making, I found the program
Blogger was a good opportunity to learn how to properly organise
and sort my blog out so it looks good and professional. I felt like it
enabled me to create the blog that I wanted to create to make my
work look good.
• SlideShare has also been a great opportunity to learn about
another software to upload things in a way that is simple and
quick. It made it much easier to put stuff on my blog without having
to worry about anything.
Threats
• Throughout my filming experience, I found that one of the threats
was the fact that I had never done editing before and therefore didn’t
know how to properly use it effectively. This meant that I wasn’t able to
be as creative as I would’ve liked to have been as I didn’t have the proper
experience to be excellent at it even though I tried following YouTube
tutorials to help me through it.
• Another minor threat to my construction of my film is the fact that I
had never really used a camera like the one we used before. This meant
that I was unfamiliar with all the buttons on the camera, therefore I couldn’t
do all the creative stuff other people could do as they had used those cameras
before. It meant that I had to find a way to make sure that my filming went
right and I didn’t find any problems.
