2. Audience feedback is important when carrying out the tasks of creating a music video, a website and a
digipak. Mainly because the products you are making are being made for the audience, and in order to
meet their needs, you need to firstly find out what their needs are.
Throughout the duration of the time we spent completing these projects, we made three audience
surveys, consisting of:
Pre-project survey: This survey consisted of finding out popular music genres, whether
songs are popular with/without music videos and the most common ways that the audience
listen to music. This was in order to establish which genre of music we was going to go into
working with.
Mid-project survey: This survey was all about seeing how well we have done so far, and
finding out the things that we have already done that we can change to make better, and take
on board any tips that the audience/teachers may have for us in order to finish the project
with a good final piece.
End of project survey: This survey was about evaluating how well we have done overall over
the past year while creating our products and what we could do better should we do the
project again.
All of the surveys were created using survey monkey and therefore were anonymous so that we could not
see who had put each answers, this was beneficial to us because it helped us to get a more accurate
response as people could feel they could say their full opinion without it being revealed that they had
said it, if it wasn’t anonymous it would have been likely that people would have just said our products
were good so that they didn’t come across as rude.
We made sure that we took on board each piece of advice that we were given so that we could ensure
that our final products were as good as they could possible be, because at the end of the project the main
focus was on pleasing the audience so that our products would be successful should they actually be
released to the public.
3. The first instalment of audience feedback that we received
was from the pre-production survey based on what the
audience thought about music videos in general. We asked
questions such as ‘What are your favourite genres of music?’
and ‘Do you feel that you are more likely to like a song if it
has a good music video?’, these types of questions can give us
an insight into audience opinions on which genres of music
have popular music videos.
In order to get people to fill out our survey, we posted the
survey link on the social networking site – ‘Twitter’ as it is
very popular especially among the ages of teenagers and
young adults. In total, 16 people completed our survey – this
meant that we were able to obtain accurate information from
each question that we had asked.
The results of this survey consisted of the most popular
music genres being Pop, Dance, Rap and RnB, because of
this and the results to some of the other questions that we
had received, we decided to go with the Dance genre as the
genre of music we was going to make a music video for. This
decision was heavily based on the fact that it was a popular
genre in the audience survey and is a genre of music that all
four of our group members enjoy listening to, it is important
that we chose a genre that not only suited the audience but
suited what we wanted to do so that we could ensure that we
would be able to remain motivated to complete the tasks as
well as possible.
4. We also received audience feedback from the mid-project
survey, this survey was mainly focused on receiving comments
and advice on how we could do better for the rest of the
project and things that we could improve on that we had
already done.
Some of the questions that we asked the audience in this
survey was mainly whether our blogs were in a good condition
and what could we do to improve them, we were unable to ask
a lot about the music video itself as we hadn’t yet reached the
stage where we could publish it for the audience to see, so
most of the feedback we received was based on the website
and digipak work that we had posted onto our blogs.
We asked four members of our media class to take part in the
survey (not including members of our group), the purpose of
this was so that we could ensure the feedback came from
members of our target audience, however we kept it
anonymous so that each person felt comfortable asking the
questions truthfully without us knowing who had put down
each answer.
We learned that by conducting a mid-project survey it allows
you to receive advice halfway through the project, so if you
have made any vital mistakes or any work needs correcting,
you can be told what to do and you can go back and correct it,
if we didn’t conduct a mid-project survey we probably wouldn’t
realise where we have gone wrong and could have potentially
lost marks at the end of the project for not completing work to
the best standard possible.
5. We received our final piece of audience feedback after we
had fully completed producing all 3 of our products
(Music Video, Website and Digipak) and therefore the
questions we asked in this audience survey were based
around how well the audience thought we had performed
in the completion of these tasks.
An example of a question that we asked on the survey was
‘What improvements could we make to the music video if
we were to make another video in this genre?’, this will
give us an idea as to what the audience think we have
done well and what we could have done better on.
The responses that we received from the end of project
survey were that we could have included more lip syncing
scenes in the video to show off our editing skills, and we
could have added more tabs on the website so that it
could be explored more in depth, this advice is just
people’s opinions however we will take note of it because
we might be required to make a similar product in the
future and the tips that we receive at this stage will be
useful to use if we have to do the task again.
Another thing that we learnt from our audience feedback
was that the website, digipak and music video all suited a
song in the dance genre, this means all three products
had a connection with each other and could be
recognised as belonging to the dance genre.
6. How did we use the feedback we received to
develop/change our production?
The survey that enabled us to change work that we had
already done was the mid-project survey, by receiving
advice half way through the project we could gather
information on how well we had done so far from an
audience perspective, this was mainly about the blog as
the actual video itself had not yet been finalised and there
was no way of showing a large audience our work so far.
Four participants took part in the survey and all four
agreed that we had completed the tasks so far to the best
of our ability which was pleasing. However, not all
participants said that our research and planning was at an
excellent standard so we decided to take action in order to
improve it before the end of the project.
We reviewed the research and planning that each of us
had done so that we could work on making it better, we
also had a look at the advice we had been given on how to
improve our work, from the survey that members of the
audience participated in.
For the tasks that I had completed, I added more
information and pictures to explain my work in more
detail and presented it so that it was more user friendly, I
did this mainly by using online sites such as Prezi,
Slideshare and Mixbook.
