Throw the dust – Bad guy appearance:
Why – The sound effect is sudden and deep, and it immediately shows you that this person is an
antagonist which places him in the opening as one of the bad characters. This effect appears three times
during the film, and it's appearance becomes part of the characters make up. This effect has proved
successful in such television shows such as 'Lost'.
Wind Howl – Opening scene:
Why – This sound signifies the genre as not one of comedy or romance, but obviously thriller/horror.
It gives the feeling of isolation and loneliness. Wind can often be associated with ghost towns and
tumbleweeds, and this fits in well with the idea of the film.
Phone Hung Up – End of phone call:
Why – The whole film is based around mobile and normal phones so we feel this signifies the end of
the film well, while being in keeping with the genre of film (thriller) and also keeping the
mysteriousness. The hanging up noise doesn't only indicate the end of the film, but also the end of the
characters life as we know it.
Boom Skankin – mp3 music:
Why – As Alex walks home, this music he is listening to shows him as a normal member of society
who has normal interests such as music or movies and does not signify him in any way which is in
keeping with the idea that he is a random target. This music is played through Alex's headphones,
which means that he is less aware of what is happening around him, which may be one of the reasons
why he is attacked so easily.
