Question 2: How does your media
product represent particular social
groups?

• In our piece the social group that is mainly present is
white, male, middle class teenagers. They are the
two protagonists of our piece. This is not a dominant
ideology of horror movies as conventionally males
play the antagonists role.

• However, they also portray the residual ideology. The
reason for this being that they are partaking in
criminal acts such as breaking into a house. This
usually isn’t expected of white, middle class
teenagers.
• However, in our piece we also have a white female. But, she is
of higher class regardless of the fact that she is a ghost.
Although, this also goes against the dominant ideology of
horror movies as she is playing the antagonist, which breaks
the conventions of horror movies as she is not the victim.
• However, it can be seen from our treatment and backstory
that she was in fact previously a victim, leading to her actions
of haunting in this horror movie.

• Throughout my groups final piece we used a handicam with
POV shot’s to place the audience with the protagonists
specifically. We did this as the aim of our horror piece was to
feel uneasy, and frightened of the occurrences in Wakefield
Manor. Much like the two teenage boys would be.
• Also, with our main target audience being teenagers and
young adults, they are easily able to relate to the characters.
Especially through their use of dialogue which we aimed to
make as authentic as possible.
• Through our use of flashbacks we are able to convey the
problems that some people suffer psychologically as we
aimed to portray the female character as being mentally ill
due to the actions that have occurred to her in the past. This
fits the dominant ideology of horror films as ghosts are
particularly used to seek revenge and fear others.
