Question 2
How does your media product
represent particular social
groups?
Women
 I am quite limited with this question because there is
only one human character that is able to represent
particular social groups.
 I did purposely however chose for my character to be
female because stereotypically they are weaker and
less brave when compared to a male. It could be
interpreted that this character is quite weak because
she is unable to resist the strong, paranormal power
coming from the teddy.
 You could say that this aim of mine has been achieved
in the film opening as she has been overtaken by this
force and is weak when compared to it, however on the
other hand it could be argued that the same would
apply to a male in the same situation.
Gender Theory – Judith Butler
 Judith Butler is a controversial gender theorist that
stated that there is a clear divide between men
and women.
 She said that the fact men and women say that
they feel more or less ‘like a woman’ or ‘like a
man’ shows how there are still stereotypes in
existence and that these are referred to on a
frequent basis.
 This backs up my point further because it
emphasises that there is a clear differentiation
between men and women and their
characteristics.
Further in the film…
 Although only the one character features in the film
opening, further characters would appear later in the
film.
 These characters would definitely be used to represent
certain social groups. The characters would include
police officers to investigate the suspicious deaths;
intrigued teenagers checking out a haunted house;
more innocent people especially children.
 For example, the police officers could be portrayed as
being really helpful to emphasise and promote a
positive message about the police force or oppositely
the police officers could be portrayed as totally useless
and unhelpful for the victims which would portray
negative views about them and could possibly turn
people against them.
 The intrigued teenagers would be portrayed as
adventurous and my aim would be to convey them
as slightly rebellious for trespassing in a haunted
house. This is because
 I would want more innocent people to feature and
be taken down by this paranormal force
associated with the teddy bear. I would like these
people to be specifically children to make it scarier
and more uncomfortable for the audience to
watch. The only connotation and representation I
would want to convey for these children would to
be innocent.
