1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products ?

Researching recent films at the start of the project made me realise the typical
forms and conventions of real media products out today. I looked at many
romantic films which I would watch and analyse. However, when in the
creating process of my film I found that I couldn’t get the actors I needed and
so I decided to do an action film that would have elements of romance and
comedy. Analysing these trailers both physically and mentally I found that the
typical conventions were:

Gentle diegetic and/or non-diegetic sound to start off with. Lots of fast
paced shots and sounds that complements the action on screen. A disturbing
shot, often someone killed, dead or hurt, (for my trailer I chose a gunshot.
This leaves the audience to imagine what just happened) There are a lot more
cuts and more transitions during the action scenes, for example when the
police are chasing the man in the car I used a slowed down time lapse to show
rugged shots, I also unfocused the camera so that I could get shots of just the
lights. I cut between these shots to create tension. The soundtrack often
changes to create a more tension or a different feel within the trailer.

I challenged the conventions of a typical action trailer by having a lot of the
footage blurred out. I didn’t want my trailer to give away much information at
all. I also used reasonable calm music in the trailer which I wanted to do to
represent the romantic part of the film. This is challenging conventions
because stereotypically actions films always have fast paced music. I went with
the get away driver being male as this is stereotypical within an action film.
However I chose to have the passenger as a woman. I switched the gender
roles in order to challenge the normal conventions. The male and female
characters are also binary oppositions and I hope that this adds the comedy
and romantic element to the film.

I chose to have low lighting within the trailer, this is because many recent
action trailers I have watched are more dark. This makes them look more
secretive and dramatic to watch. It also makes the trailer uncertain and your
not sure what the trailer is actually going to be about. I made sure that I used
props within my trailer to make sure the audience could identify the action
genre. I chose to have the robber in all black and to wear a woolly hat. This
makes her secretive and immediately tells the audience that she is a bugler.

I used a range of shot types for my trailer. By Following the conventions of
real media products I used close ups and made the cuts quicker as the
disequilibrium occurs. The shots at the beginning of the trailer last slightly
longer than those towards the end as this makes the tension grow throughout
the trailer. I kept the camera still in many shots to reflect harmony but I also
did a time lapse using a handheld camera to show that the action was taking
place. I aso showed this through unfocused shots.

For the sound I used an un copyrighted sound effects off of YouTube. This
was of the police cars and the dog barking the policeman's radios. I used this
to represent the police as we do not see them in the trailer. I then used the
soundtrack from drive however it was a slight remix that I got off YouTube
and so this wasn’t copyrighted.

I feel that I was successful in making my trailer relate to the genre conventions
of an action film. I used the basic conventions and tried to create a lot of
tension within the trailer.
9. PAGE 8
I feel that my film poster relates to the action
conventions as it shows a car with its headlights
on. When you see a car on a poster you
immediately recognise that it is going to be an
action film. I feel that I was successful in making
the poster look of an action genre. The poster
doesn’t give away a lot about the film, which
makes it a teaser poster. I am please with the
outcome of this poster as it leaves the audience
wanting to know more.

This is a magazine cover advertising my film.
I feel that I have used all the conventions
when creating a magazine cover. The image I
used is of a car tyre mark and this makes the
audience know that it is an action film as tyre
marks represents cars racing around. This
doesn’t say a lot about the film however it
leaves the audience wanting to know more. I
feel that I was successful in creating a
magazine cover as I feel that this is something
your would genuinely see in a store.
